WORKING IN THE HAY

John 15:1-17

STEP ONE IS SURRENDER.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me” (vs. 1 & 4).

  • Growing followers of Christ are challenged to remain faithful.
  • The word remain is mentioned 10 times in the first 10 verses.
  • The greater “Vine” is Jesus. Surrender connects us to Christ and his family.

STEP TWO IS CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.

Now remain in my love” (vs 9).

  • The life of a disciple in Christ will not grow fruit without community.
  • Spiritual growth needs a partnership.
  • Connecting in small groups is about community.

STEP THREE IS PRODUCTIVITY.

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and

appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—

fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in

my name the Father will give you. This is my

command: Love each other” (vs. 16-17).

  • Each branch has responsibilities.
  • Each branch is to bear fruit.
  • A branch cannot bear fruit of itself.
