Cancel culture has been running rampant in the social media universe lately, and it has spilled over into the physical world and out of the digital world in some places. In this podcast, Millennial Z and Boomer X discuss what cancel culture actually is, how it started and how it has been used over the years under different labels.

In the past, you could be "cancelled" for some broken social contract and be ostracized by those in your local area who were aware of it and still function. You may be even given a platform to explain yourself or make up for the transgression to be accepted back into the social graces of the community that "cancelled" you. Or, you could simply leave the area of your own accord and go somewhere else to start over if you didn't agree with the way you were being treated and thought there was nothing to apologize for, or perhaps you were the person treated poorly and simply stood up for yourself, but that caused a problem among your social group. Now, however, you are known everywhere you go. Starting over today is far more difficult, and almost impossible if you are famous and well known. A person who is rich by being famous creating such a stink to be cancelled by a significant part of the world community may just have ended their career.

Is it right? Meaning, is it ethical to cancel someone if that person has done something wrong. Boomer X thinks that in some instances it may be. But you should be sure that the punishment fits the "crime". Do you remove the livelihood of someone that calls someone else an ugly name...no matter how ugly? Should a person be fired from their job for being a jerk to a group of kids if it has no bearing on what they do for a living?

The thing about free speech is that it's meaningless unless others can say things you don'[t agree with even if it offends you. We're not talking about abuse or encouraging violence, we're talking about different viewpoints of life and perceiving the world. A difference in understanding and interpreting facts that you may find offensive. If everyone is always nodding their heads, especially if coerced due to social ostracism, there is no real understanding of anyone else, or anything at all really.

It is suspected that civil consequences in the form of financial compensation will be made for unjust or improper "cancelling" of individuals, and it's curious why it hasn't happened more often. Sometimes, the justice system isn't just at all, and a "cancellation" may be the only thing that allows a perpetrator to understand how badly they have acted and what they have done. But we must all be careful in how it's utilized and why.
