You're. Listening to the Mens Rea a podcast

0:02

and this is the story of where

0:04

the heck I've been since October. So.

0:07

For those of you who want the long

0:09

story short upfront, basically I have been finalizing

0:11

a house purchase an organizing a move. In

0:14

terms of the podcast going forward. I'm back

0:16

to being a one woman team, so my

0:18

current plan is to release one episode per

0:20

month on the main feed until were settled

0:22

in and I reassess things to see if

0:24

I can up my workload again. If you

0:27

don't want the full story, you can skip

0:29

ahead now. two minutes and you can get

0:31

right to the story. For. Those who

0:33

want the harrowing tale of house buying, listen

0:35

on. Firstly, I want to say that we

0:37

know how lucky we are that were in

0:39

a position to purchase a house right now

0:41

is is incredibly difficult and honestly it has

0:44

been for a long time so we're very

0:46

thankful that we've been able to do this.

0:48

It shouldn't be so hard and housing is

0:50

are right that we shouldn't have to fight

0:52

for, but here we are. It's been a

0:54

ten year journey for us that's involved losing

0:56

our rented place, moving in with family, and

0:58

then relocating to a totally new county. So

1:00

for those still listening, you'll have to indulge.

1:03

Me: Last. September we started what

1:05

turned into the process of closing the

1:07

sale. We had to rush things along

1:09

because if we didn't we would have

1:11

had to get new life insurance policy

1:13

offers and that had been a whole

1:15

saga in itself the year before. So

1:17

we got keys in mid October. But

1:19

as you may or may not know,

1:21

new houses aren't always sold in walk

1:23

condition. So we have to buy flooring

1:25

tiles, find a painter, and find a

1:27

plumber, and then train schedule all those

1:29

people as soon as possible, but without

1:31

interfering with one another as it. Stands

1:34

Now we're about to hit four months of

1:36

owning the house, but we're still waiting to

1:38

have a fully finished bathroom so we're slowly

1:40

packing and still basically in the process of

1:42

moving. With all that going on, my head

1:44

has just not been in the game for

1:46

the last number of months. I decided that

1:48

in order to get things done with the

1:50

house, I needed to get myself a pass

1:52

to drop the ball the podcast and as

1:54

I said, at the top, I'm going to

1:56

aim for one episode a month for the

1:58

foreseeable. I need to balance working. With getting

2:00

settled into the house when we finally actually

2:02

do move so hopefully you'll bear with me

2:04

while I get back. On my fees

2:06

and try to keep burn out and

2:09

overwhelming bay. And so that's where I've

2:11

been for four months not moving but

2:13

were about to sell. Let's. Get

2:15

To Us. You.

2:17

Were listening to the Mens Rea a podcast.

2:20

And this is the story of

2:22

Julie Tenants. On

2:55

Wednesday August ninth, two thousand

2:57

Philly and I least tenants

2:59

contacted. The are you see in Ballymena.

3:01

To report their daughter Julie

3:04

missing. Twenty one year old

3:06

Julie left the family home on. Main St.

3:08

Four days before. And haven't been

3:10

seen or heard from since. She. Was

3:13

carrying very little cash and had left

3:15

her vital medication behind causing alarm bells

3:17

to ring for her family. Julie's

3:19

parents had spent the last few days

3:21

looking for her and making their own

3:23

inquiries around the town, but they're searches

3:26

turned up nothing. Julie was

3:28

particularly vulnerable as you just

3:30

been released from an impatient

3:32

drug rehabilitation hospital in Antrim

3:34

and. It was very out of character for

3:36

her to vanish without a trace. Or. Drop

3:38

out of contact. Police.

3:40

Issued an appeal for Julie in the local

3:42

media. With Sergeant Bob Say or from

3:45

Ballymena are you see station saying.

3:47

Close. She was last seen by

3:49

her family at her home around

3:51

twelve fifteen am on Saturday, August

3:53

fifth, and could have left there

3:55

any time between then and seven

3:57

am. Julie was suffering from

3:59

depressed and had no medication with her.

4:02

We. Have checked all possible addresses and

4:04

made extensive inquiry so far, but there

4:06

has been no trace of her. Adding.

4:09

To the concern for Julie was the fact

4:11

that another young woman had vanished and the

4:14

nearby city of Belfast the previous month. Maria.

4:16

Mcconnell, who also suffered from severe

4:18

depression, disappeared after a rare nice

4:20

house in the city. Tragically.

4:23

Her body was found two weeks

4:25

later in an unoccupied house and

4:27

the University District of Belfast. She.

4:30

Had been brutally murdered, A

4:32

suspect had been arrested and charged

4:34

with Maria's murder prior to Julie's

4:36

disappearance, and although the cases were

4:39

unrelated, the parallels between both women

4:41

were striking. Because. Of this

4:43

Sergeant Fair said. That finding Julie was

4:45

now a matter of urgency and he asked

4:48

for anyone with any information that could help

4:50

the police with their inquiries to get in

4:52

touch. As a result

4:54

of this appeal, a witness came forward to

4:57

say that he had been with a group

4:59

of friends and a Chinese take away in

5:01

Ballymena. Just after to am on August fifth

5:03

when Julie Tenant who was known to them

5:05

approached. She spoke to one of the

5:08

men asking if he could get her a syringe

5:10

and as she did another man in the group

5:12

had stuck his head out of the door of

5:14

the take away and told her that he to

5:16

get her one at his house on board and

5:18

streets. The witness told police that the man's name.

5:21

Was Adrian Hayes? Detectors.

5:23

Quickly found that twenty six year old Hayes

5:26

and spoke. To him. but he claims that

5:28

he had left Julie with the other men

5:30

and gone home alone with his Chinese food.

5:33

However, When Investigators subsequently spoke to

5:35

Hayes is next door neighbors, they

5:37

learned that sounds of a woman

5:39

crying loudly or. Heard coming from his

5:41

house at around a quarter past. Two when

5:43

the early hours of the morning of

5:45

August Fifth, Based. On this

5:47

information, officers decided to searches class

5:50

and upon entry they saw blood

5:52

spattered up along the wall in

5:54

the hallway. The. Scene was

5:56

sealed off for technical examination and and

5:58

are you see some men do a

6:00

statements to the media saying that Julie

6:03

was believed to have been in the

6:05

home prior to her disappearance. Rising.

6:07

For the Belfast Telegraph, journalists Martin

6:09

Breen also reported that a number

6:12

of derelict buildings were expected to

6:14

be examined, and that a search

6:16

of the river Braid was ongoing.

6:18

Upon. Realization that his home was

6:21

being examined. Adrian, he's fled. And.

6:23

Along with searching for julie, officers know

6:25

faced the added challenge of trying to

6:28

track down their main suspects. Two

6:31

and a half weeks after Julie vanished,

6:33

there was a breakthrough in the case

6:35

when he's his uncle, Andrew Harkin who

6:37

lived in the Uk contacted police and

6:39

Dover. Park. And told officers that

6:41

his nephew. Turned up on his

6:43

doorstep earlier that day and confessed.

6:46

To killing a woman before burying her

6:48

body in a shallow grave hairbrush, Shane

6:50

and and from. Park. And

6:52

had tried to talk Hayes into turning

6:54

himself over to the policing current, but

6:56

he refused. Phase. Than last

6:58

Harkins house, claiming that he was returning

7:00

to Ballymena to hand himself over to

7:02

the police there and stared. Park.

7:05

And didn't believe him. And as his nephew

7:07

sped off he made note of the registration

7:09

of his land. Rover which he gave to

7:11

the police. The vehicle was

7:13

traced in the low and following a

7:15

short car chase, Hayes was apprehended and

7:17

arrested before being returned to Northern Ireland

7:20

and handed over to the are you

7:22

see. Adrian. Hayes

7:24

was born in Ballymena on

7:26

October third, Nineteen Seventy Three.

7:29

Growing. Up. He was the second

7:31

youngest of six siblings, and after being.

7:33

Bullied as a young child, he started to

7:35

rebel and his. Early teens. His

7:38

propensity for fighting earns him a

7:40

reputation as a quote unquote hard

7:42

man and after leaving school. This

7:44

petty violence evolves into more serious.

7:46

From analyses such as stealing and

7:49

burglary. At the age of eighteen,

7:51

he was given his first custodial. Sentence when

7:53

he was sent to Ruff Gail

7:55

Training School which was a young

7:57

offenders institution. However, despite.

8:00

The sentenced to. Three years is

8:02

ultimately served just thirty one

8:04

days after an appeal was

8:06

granted. At the age of

8:08

nineteen, he's traveled to Holland where he

8:10

became involved in drugs and when he

8:12

returned to Brock Shane he started dealing.

8:15

Over the next few years, he accrued

8:17

a string of convictions for common assault

8:20

test and burglary And Nineteen Ninety Nine

8:22

he began a relationship with his future

8:24

wife, Fiona. And less than a

8:26

year later, in April two thousand the

8:28

pair married. However, by this

8:30

time Hayes was drinking heavily and

8:32

taking his pent up anger out

8:34

on Fiona. And. Shortly after their

8:37

wedding, he beat her in a

8:39

frenzied attack that resulted in her

8:41

requiring hospitalization. Soon. After this

8:43

assault, Fiona discovered that. She was pregnant

8:45

and the couple became estranged. Just.

8:48

Four months later, Julie tenant

8:50

went missing. And. Sees for the

8:52

last person to have seen her. Detectors.

8:55

Interview Hayes Bush. He denied having

8:58

anything to do with Julie's disappearance,

9:00

despite being told that her blood

9:02

was found in his last. When.

9:04

Officers told him that his neighbors heard

9:06

a girl sobbing through the walls on

9:08

the night the julie went missing. He

9:10

maintained his innocence. Denying any knowledge

9:12

of this. He. Was held in

9:14

custody as the search for Julie turned

9:17

to the nearby village of Brought Shame

9:19

were Adrian Hayes was originally from. A.

9:21

Team of twelve officers began combing

9:23

the fields along the Telly More

9:25

Road on the outskirts of the

9:28

village, and an army helicopter flew

9:30

overhead in a bid to identify

9:32

any areas of recently disturbed ground.

9:35

Hayes. Was interviewed for a

9:37

second time on August twenty Fourth,

9:40

and during the twenty three minutes

9:42

interrogation, he confessed to attacking Julie.

9:45

Claiming. That he never meant to kill her. He.

9:47

Told detectives that he tricked Julie into

9:49

going home with him under the pretense

9:51

of getting her a needle. He.

9:53

Said he did this because he was lonely

9:56

and wanted someone to talk to. The.

9:58

Pair argued when she realized. He

10:00

didn't have a needle and he started

10:02

punching her repeatedly with his fists. And.

10:05

A prolonged attack. He's been the young

10:07

woman for twenty minutes. While she

10:09

remained conscious. He. Said close

10:11

her moaning started to do my

10:14

head in and then told the

10:16

officers that he's super glued to

10:18

lips together to quieten. He.

10:20

Apologized for what he had done.

10:22

Telling detectives that he was very

10:24

sorry for her family. Has.

10:27

Agreed to show investigators. Were He

10:29

buried Julie's body and they loaded him

10:31

into a squad car before driving to

10:33

The Whitehall A stays on the outskirts

10:36

of Roxane. There. At

10:38

the edge of a winding tree lines lane

10:40

way near the telly More Road. Julie's.

10:42

Remains were found in a shallow

10:44

grave. Her. Body was wrapped in

10:47

a white bed she's and black plastic

10:49

seizing. Which. Was held in place

10:51

by masking tape. The. Area which

10:53

was a heritage site normally open to

10:55

the public. Was. Sealed off immediately

10:57

and a technical team was drafted and

11:00

to examine the size for evidence. He's.

11:03

Was taken back to Ballymena are you

11:05

see station or he was charged with

11:07

Julie's murder. Meanwhile.

11:09

Julie's body was removed from the

11:12

scene for a full post mortem

11:14

examination by deputy state Pathologists. Dot

11:16

Sir Alastair Bentley. He. Began

11:18

by removing the materials enveloping

11:21

her body. Beneath. The bed

11:23

sheets and plastic wrapping. Julie was naked

11:25

from the waist down. Her underwear

11:27

had been carson to and place to

11:29

cross her chest along with some other

11:32

items of clothing. Julie's. Legs

11:34

were wrapped in red electrical cable

11:36

and white sheets of fabric had

11:38

been torn into strips and nasr

11:40

together. Before. Being wrapped around

11:42

her upper body and neck. A

11:45

green plastic bag was also tied around

11:47

her neck by the handles. And

11:49

a rope had been wound around

11:51

Julie's wrists, waste and ankles. During.

11:54

The Examination: the pathologist noted the

11:57

presence of Super and Julie's hair

11:59

and my. And. Extensive

12:01

bruising covered her cheeks, rice

12:03

I and scalp area. And.

12:05

See shaped fracture was discovered on

12:08

her right temple. While. The

12:10

young woman's arms, legs, torso,

12:12

and back also displayed patches

12:14

of bruising. Julie's. Nasal

12:16

bones had been fractured and a

12:18

diagonal wound was noted. Between the corner

12:20

of her left eye and knows. Toxicology

12:23

reports showed traces of alcohol, diazepam,

12:25

and to marzipan in her system,

12:28

but Dr. Bentley determined that the

12:30

levels were too low to have

12:32

contributed in any way to Julie's

12:35

death. Unfortunately given, the

12:37

young woman's body had lane in

12:39

a shallow grave for more than

12:41

two weeks in the August he's

12:43

her remains were extensively decomposed and

12:45

as a result, Doctor Bentley could

12:47

not determine the cause of death

12:49

with any certainty. However,

12:51

He concluded that it was probable that

12:54

Julie's airways had been restricted due to

12:56

the combination of her lips being super

12:58

glued along with the seepage of blood

13:00

from her shattered nose and her nasal

13:03

passage. Dispensed. That suffocation

13:05

was highly likely. A

13:08

tenant family were devastated by the loss

13:10

of Julie. Over. The three

13:12

weeks that Julie was missing her parents

13:14

and five sisters. Had endured the torment

13:17

of not knowing what had happened to

13:19

her, and even though the chance of

13:21

her being sent alive waned with each

13:23

passing day, they still held out hope.

13:26

That. Hope was no dust and they

13:28

struggled to come to terms with the

13:30

violent manner in which their beloved Julie

13:32

had died. Or family would

13:34

never have dreamed this would come toward

13:36

door said. Her shuttered mother. I least

13:38

we will never be the same without

13:41

Julie. Up until that

13:43

point the tenant home had been a loving

13:45

and happy one. Growing. Up. Julie

13:47

was described as a briars and bubbly girl

13:49

who did well in school and who had

13:51

the whole world at her feet. She.

13:54

Was particularly close with her youngest sister,

13:56

Caroline, who was just seven years old

13:58

when she was. With. Her.

14:01

Parents remembered her as a normal young woman

14:03

who was always smiling and never bore any.

14:05

Grudges And although she experienced some issues

14:07

with heroin and recent times she was

14:10

working on us and making plans for

14:12

her future. Tragically.

14:14

Julie's encounter with Adrian Hayes

14:16

outside. The Chinese take away

14:18

occurred just six hours after

14:20

her release from the drug

14:22

rehabilitation. Yunus and and from. Three

14:25

weeks after she was killed, julie

14:28

tenant was laid to rest. Hundreds

14:30

of mourners followed the courthouse on first

14:32

as a carried her from the family

14:34

home on Main Street. To All

14:37

Saints Church. Canon Son Connolly

14:39

told the mourners about the quote bright

14:41

girl who did well in her studies

14:43

and was. Brought up and a

14:45

caring home by kind and loving

14:47

parents. He. Continued close. On occasions

14:50

like this, we all want to ask

14:52

the question why. Evil. Comes

14:54

in many guises. And we have to

14:56

rely on her face to counter s. Pupils.

14:59

From Garen Tower were Julie had been

15:01

a student. Formed a guard of

15:03

honor flanking her coffin as it was

15:06

led from the church for her burial

15:08

at the nearby Cripple The Cemetery. The.

15:20

Trial of Adrian. He's opened on

15:22

January Twenty eighth. Two thousand and

15:24

two as and from Crown course

15:26

sitting and cold rain. He.

15:29

Pleaded not guilty to the murder of

15:31

Judy tenant. The. Proceedings were

15:33

covered extensively by reporters from

15:35

the Belfast Telegraph and the

15:37

Belfast Newsletter. In. His

15:39

opening statements for the prosecution:

15:41

Queen's. Counsel Mr. Gordon Care told

15:44

the jury the Julie was violently

15:46

assaulted by Hayes. In. The Hallway

15:48

as A/at Wharton Street in Ballymena

15:50

in the early hours of August

15:52

Fifth: Two thousand. Mister. Care

15:55

said that he's had lured the vulnerable

15:57

young woman to his home under the

15:59

false pretense they're getting a needle just

16:01

hours after her release from a drug

16:03

rehab facility. He. Told them that

16:06

they would here and he's his own words

16:08

from his police interviews. How Julie had

16:10

tried to leave the flash when she realized that

16:12

he could not get her what she wanted. He's.

16:15

Had responded by following her into the

16:17

hall and punching her in the face.

16:20

And. After she fell to the ground, he beat

16:22

her with both fists. In a

16:24

vicious and prolonged attack that

16:26

lasted twenty minutes. Relatives.

16:28

And friends of Julie's left the courtroom

16:31

and tears as the Qc described how

16:33

he he's had, then admitted to pouring

16:35

superglue into the young woman's mouth and

16:37

clumping it. Sauce said that he wouldn't

16:39

have to listen to her moans. After.

16:42

Ceiling her mouth closed. His claim to

16:44

have fallen asleep on the sofa, and

16:46

when he awoke a short time later,

16:48

Julie was dead. Mister. Care

16:51

said that on finding Julie deceased,

16:53

he's had removed the lower house

16:55

of her clothing. He. Then wrapped

16:57

her body and seats and been minors

16:59

and put her remains and I said

17:01

before going away for an overnight trip

17:03

with his estranged wife. Upon.

17:05

His return, a haze disposed of Julie

17:08

tenants remains by burying her in a

17:10

shallow grave in an isolated area where

17:12

she lay for almost two weeks. While.

17:15

Her family searched frantically for

17:17

her. Mister. Care concluded

17:19

his opening speech by telling. The jury

17:21

that they would hear from his deputy state

17:23

Pathologist. Doctor Alastair Bentley How

17:25

the gluing and multi fractures.

17:28

To Julie's nose. Would have

17:30

resulted in the obstruction. Of her airways

17:32

and that her death would have occurred in

17:34

a matter of minutes. On

17:37

day two of the proceedings, neighbors of

17:39

Adrian Hayes gave evidence about what they

17:41

saw and heard. On the night the julie

17:44

died. Lindsay Jane Care, who

17:46

lived next door to Hayes and Warden

17:48

Street recalled her She was woken as

17:50

a quarter past two in the morning

17:52

or what she initially thought was that

17:55

close wailing have a dog. Miss.

17:57

Care saw does She told the jury that she

17:59

soon real. It was a girl crying.

18:02

And. That you could also hear a man

18:04

shouting and the resends have someone going up

18:06

and down the stairs. The. Witness

18:08

said that she lay in bed for

18:10

around five minutes listening to the sands

18:12

before getting up to investigate. Weird, the

18:14

noise was coming from. She.

18:17

Looked at her first four bedroom window into

18:19

the garden next door and could see that

18:21

the life was on in both the bathroom

18:23

and kitchen. Of Age or in Hayes is

18:25

Class. And as care also saw that

18:27

the light was on in a shed at the back

18:29

of his his garden. She. Couldn't see

18:32

was or who was causing the noise

18:34

but the rest is was on doing

18:36

so. She went downstairs where she noticed

18:39

the sounds were getting louder. She

18:41

explained close it was like a

18:43

girl crying the scared cry, a

18:46

whaling type of noise. This.

18:48

Prompted her to go out and to her own

18:50

back garden to have a closer look through Hayes

18:52

as windows. But. She couldn't see

18:54

anything discernible. Miss. Care told

18:56

the court that she then went back inside

18:59

and banged on the wall that separated her

19:01

living room from Adrian. Hayes is always. The

19:04

witness continued close, the crying and wailing

19:06

continued and I thought I heard of

19:08

front door opening. I got scared and

19:10

I thought whoever was next door was

19:13

coming to complain. Panicked.

19:15

Lindsay run upstairs but came back down

19:17

a few minutes later when nothing. Happened.

19:20

It was then that she started hearing a

19:22

scratching noise, which he likens to. The sound

19:25

of a carpet being scrubbed by a

19:27

nail brush. Miss. Care said

19:29

that she finally went back upstairs. To bed.

19:31

And while there she could. Still hear

19:33

the weeping sounds except this time

19:35

they were more muted. She.

19:37

Banged on the wall again and this

19:39

time a man's voice shouted back all

19:42

rice. And allowed and angry tone.

19:45

Very. Make they Lindsay cares boyfriend at

19:47

the time also gave a similar account

19:49

of the night and question. He.

19:51

Told the court that he remembered being woken

19:54

up by what sounded like muffled banging of

19:56

someone who would come home drunk and was

19:58

stumbling a Bios. That video

20:00

also heard the weeping and scrubbing

20:02

noises. Mr. Mcveigh felt of

20:04

the time that something wasn't right and

20:07

told the jury that he estimated. These

20:09

noises continued. For rent. Twenty minutes.

20:12

Jason Davidson, who was part of the group

20:14

that was with Hayes and the Chinese take

20:17

Away. That mice also gave evidence. Davidson.

20:19

Confirmed that he knew both Julie

20:22

Tenants and Adrian Hayes. And.

20:24

Said that he met Julie outside the take

20:26

away in the early hours of August fifth.

20:28

Julie. Had asked him as he could get

20:30

her a needle and just as she did he's

20:32

stuck his head out through the door of the

20:34

restaurant and told her that he had one in

20:36

his last. Jason. Davidson said

20:39

that the last time he saw Julie

20:41

was as she walked down Sussex Trees

20:43

and the company of Adrian Hayes. The

20:46

next witness put on the stand was Hayes

20:48

his uncle Andrew Harkin. He told

20:50

the prosecution to see that when his nephew

20:53

first showed up on his doorstep and can't

20:55

he didn't recognize him. Mr. Harken

20:57

described how Hayes looked worried and frightened

20:59

and told him that he was quoted.

21:01

In a bit of trouble and that he them something. To.

21:04

Witness had prostate for more details and

21:07

initially his nephew was reluctant to say

21:09

much about it. But. Eventually, Hayes

21:11

told him what it happens. Miss.

21:14

Or Harkin recalled that the defendant had told

21:16

him that he close had a big argument

21:18

with this girl and he'd given her a

21:20

few slaps and she went and hit her

21:22

head on the radiator. He. Said

21:24

that he is also claimed to have close

21:26

left the girl lying for two or three

21:29

days on a table and that her blood

21:31

close went into a bucket which he emptied

21:33

down a drain. Harken. Said

21:35

that after his nephew confessed to the killing,

21:38

he tried to persuade him to hand himself

21:40

over to the local policing tend. But.

21:42

He's refuse and instead claims that he

21:44

was going back home to Ballymena to

21:47

found himself and they're. Under

21:49

cross from Queen's counsel James gala her

21:51

for that sense andrew heart and said

21:53

that he had taken his his vehicle

21:55

registration place and sound Kent police as

21:58

soon as his nephew drove. All. He.

22:00

Said he was going to hand them selves in

22:03

Harken said but I didn't believe him. On.

22:06

The fourth day of the trial,

22:08

Deputy State Pathologist Doctor Alistair Bentley

22:10

gave evidence of his autopsy findings.

22:13

He. Said he performed the post mortem one

22:15

day after the discovery of Julie tenants

22:17

body and brought shame and described the

22:19

way in which are remains were wrapped

22:21

and tethered with cable and rope. Doctor

22:24

Bentley gave harrowing details as to the

22:26

extent of the decomposition of Julie's body,

22:28

telling the jury of nine men and

22:30

three women have the advance to came

22:32

and that the cause of death could

22:34

not be ascertained. However, he

22:37

said there was evidence that Julie was

22:39

beaten with a close considerable amount of

22:41

force before her lips. Were super glued

22:44

together. The. Pathologist recounted

22:46

the litany of injury as the young

22:48

woman had suffered, saying that the

22:50

significant patches of bruising were consistent with

22:52

a beating. He told the course

22:55

that the only fractures on Julie's body were

22:57

to her nose and temple. And. He

22:59

said that the slits wound between Julie's left

23:01

eye and nose was likely caused by an

23:03

hour Weapons such as the blade of a

23:06

nice. On questioning from

23:08

Queen's Counsel, Jordan Care of the

23:10

pathologist supported the prosecution's contention the

23:12

Julie had died from suffocation caused

23:15

by her lips being sealed while

23:17

blood from her nose obstructed her

23:19

nasal passage. However, Under cross

23:22

from James Gala hurt defending he accepted

23:24

that he could be certain as to

23:26

the actual cause of death. He

23:28

also admitted that despite the presence of

23:31

Superglue and Julie smelled he could not

23:33

say with certainty that sees was close.

23:36

Actually, Successful and superglue in the

23:38

lips. Or that the lips. Are

23:40

sealed. Press. By the

23:42

Keys see Doctor Bentley accepted that it

23:44

would be difficult to superbly the lips.

23:46

Of someone who was struggling. Mister.

23:48

Down Her put a to him that the

23:50

fracture to Julie's temple could have been caused

23:52

by her striking our head on something as

23:54

she sell and because of this she may

23:56

have suffered brain damage that resulted in her

23:58

death. The. Past. The Just said

24:00

that this couldn't be ruled out entirely.

24:03

Those in a case like those he would

24:05

have expected see blood clots in the brain

24:07

during post mortem. And. In

24:09

this instance, there were none present. Following.

24:13

The defense's cross examination Mr.

24:15

Care prosecuting questions Doctor Bentley

24:18

further. He. Asked the pathologist

24:20

if there was anything inconsistent with

24:22

his findings. The julie died from

24:24

suffocation. To Witch Doctor Bentley

24:27

replied. That. There was news. The

24:30

following day cases police interview tapes were

24:32

played in the court for the jury.

24:35

As the recordings echoed around the

24:37

courtroom, Hayes Saucer, the Doc weeping.

24:40

And. The initial interview Hayes could be

24:42

heard maintaining his innocence, telling officers that

24:44

he returned home alone in the early

24:47

hours of August Fifth and had eaten

24:49

is Chinese food before phoning his estranged

24:51

wife and going to bed. During

24:54

a second interview, Hayes is heard

24:57

confessing to the detectors. Telling

24:59

him that he close went. Blind and

25:01

close. Saw red after an

25:03

argument. About her when use. Truly.

25:06

Does up to leave but he said he followed

25:08

her and punched her in the face. He

25:10

claims that Julie his her head on the

25:12

hall stairs as she fell backwards and she

25:15

started shouting insults at him. It.

25:17

Was then that he's lost control

25:19

and began punching Julie with both

25:21

cysts. Continuing the attack for twenty

25:23

minutes, Julie. Moans and agonies.

25:25

She lay on the ground. He's.

25:28

Had stated close. It started to

25:30

do my head in. And. Then went

25:33

on to explain how we it blew her

25:35

lips together to keep her quiet before sitting

25:37

down to watch television. He's cleaned

25:39

that he then fell asleep before. Waking

25:41

with the jump twenty minutes later, by

25:44

this time, Julie was no longer much

25:46

noise. He. Told the officers close

25:48

I couldn't hear anything, they couldn't hear moaning

25:50

and groaning. I reach down and she was

25:53

getting cold shit. no pulse and I didn't

25:55

know what to do. So. A raptor

25:57

up and sheets and title with a rope and put

25:59

back silver. The had to stop the blood. Then.

26:02

He said he burned her trainers and handbag and

26:04

put Julie's body in the shed in the back

26:06

of garden for two days. On.

26:08

The Sunday night he moved her remains to

26:11

Roxane and put her in a shallow grave.

26:14

Later. In the interview, detectives asked him

26:16

again about the superglue, and he told them

26:18

that Julie was conscious when he blew her

26:20

lips together. He. Believed that she knew

26:22

what he was doing and claimed that she

26:24

didn't resist as he did us. When.

26:27

Asked if he intended to have sex with her,

26:29

He said that he didn't and that he just

26:32

wanted someone to talk to. He. Denied

26:34

knowing the potential consequences of ceiling her

26:36

mouth shut and claims he didn't realize

26:38

that it could restrict her breathing. The.

26:41

Interview ended with he's apologizing

26:43

for his actions. He said

26:45

close. I did not mean for that to happen

26:48

to her at all. On

26:50

February fourth, a week into the trial,

26:53

Adrian Hayes took to the stands and

26:55

his own defense. Proceedings.

26:57

Had to be halted a number of

26:59

times during his evidence because he repeatedly

27:01

broke down as he gave his version

27:03

of events. He. Told the court that

27:06

he had taken to drinking heavily due to

27:08

depression and thus he was finishing up a

27:10

nice out with friends when they met Julie

27:12

tenant at the Take away. His

27:14

claims that he initially thought the Julie went

27:16

off with the other men. He told the

27:18

court that he made his way home alone,

27:20

only to discover that Julie had followed him

27:22

when he arrived at Mordant Stories. A

27:25

went inside together but began to argue and

27:27

Julie went to leave. He said that

27:29

he followed her into the hallway and as he

27:31

did so, he alleged that he thought she was

27:34

going to his him. So he punched her in

27:36

the face before she got the chance. According

27:38

to him Julie then got back up and

27:40

started hitting him so he hid or again

27:42

and this time as she says she hit

27:44

the back of her head on the stairs.

27:47

Hayes told the court that he tried to

27:49

lift her back up but is he did

27:51

so. she began hitting him again and he

27:53

lost control attacking her with both fists. By.

27:56

The end of the assault tool is moans were

27:58

getting to i'm so we'd such the to but

28:01

superglue from the other room. He.

28:03

Recalled what happens next saying close. I listed

28:05

the glue and put it on her lips.

28:07

Them went back into the living room and

28:09

lay on the sofa. I. Could still

28:11

hear Julie crying. I went to sleep and

28:14

when I got hope she was dead. After

28:17

finding Julie dead, Hayes said that he

28:19

was torn between feelings of suicide and

28:21

wanting to can sense. The.

28:23

Spice these alleged feelings, he found

28:25

his pregnant estranged wife. Leaving.

28:27

A message on her answering machine during which he told

28:30

her that he loved her. Just.

28:32

Hours after he's killed Julie the

28:34

couple last for a nice away

28:36

traveling to the more and mountains

28:38

and county down. All the

28:40

while, Julie's body lay in his shed,

28:42

wrapped in bin bags and sheets. The.

28:45

Pair this is a tussle well on Forest

28:47

Park and other beauty. Spots during their

28:49

stay. His. Alleged that he

28:52

wanted to confess to his wise, but

28:54

that he close couldn't bring himself to

28:56

tell her. At one stage

28:58

she said that he contemplated crashing the

29:00

car and tool ball to commit suicide.

29:03

Bus that he didn't have the harsh to

29:05

kill his wife and their unborn child. He.

29:07

Described taking Julie's remains Roxane on

29:09

his return and said that he

29:11

cried as he buried her in

29:13

the shallow grave. He. Claimed that

29:16

the next few weeks where a living hell

29:18

for him. He's.

29:20

As cross examination by Richard we're

29:22

to see began the following day.

29:25

When. Challenge on his initial lives. During

29:27

his first police interview, he said that

29:29

he lied out of quo fear, shock,

29:31

and panic. Mister. We're countered

29:34

asking. The descendants how he was able

29:36

to take his wife away just hours

29:38

after killing Julie Given his days of.

29:40

Alleged show. He's

29:42

insisted that he had never intended to harm

29:44

Julie, but that he simply wanted her to

29:46

leave his. House following drug use. However,

29:50

this contradicted the toxicology reports.

29:52

Which. Only find prescription such as his

29:54

and alcohol and Julie system. He

29:57

spoke again about the weeks following the

29:59

killing. Insisting that he wanted to tell

30:01

the truth but that is mind wouldn't

30:04

let him that he close lived in

30:06

hope that the nightmare was into reality.

30:09

Mister. We're offered a simpler explanation,

30:11

suggesting that he's simply didn't

30:13

want to get cause. He's.

30:16

Responded telling the Qc close I

30:18

lied yes, but not to evade

30:20

detection. A. Call so much Socket

30:22

was easier to lie than tell the truth.

30:26

When. Pressed on the version of events he had

30:28

given him courts the previous day. He's. Maintained that

30:30

he had only had Julian the face of. A

30:32

ten times but close. Not. Have full

30:35

force, He. Said he'd been very drunk

30:37

and had staggered to the living room. Sussex

30:39

The glue. He's. Told the prosecuting

30:41

counsel that the whole incident had lasted.

30:44

Only two or three minutes. And

30:46

that by the end, Julie was still

30:48

conscious. However, this was refuted by

30:50

Mr. We're who put it to Hayes. The

30:52

julie tenants have been beaten unconscious by the

30:54

end of the assault. The. Qc

30:57

pointed out that of Julie had been

30:59

conscious when he's finished hitting her. She.

31:01

Surely would have taken or chance to escape when

31:03

he went to get the superglue. At.

31:06

This point Adrian Hayes refuse to answer

31:08

any further questions on the stand claiming

31:10

that the prosecution was twisting his evidence

31:13

and taking his words that have contacts.

31:16

However, Following an adjournment and forty.

31:18

Five minutes he returned to the dock

31:20

to resume. His cross examination. Richard.

31:23

We're asked him if he had sad

31:25

Julie tenants in the nose causing the

31:27

parents knife wound. But. He's denied

31:30

this. He recounted how in the aftermath

31:32

of Jewel his death he was so

31:34

drunk and all rational thought was gone

31:36

as he gathered. Up items to

31:38

read, And dispenser study. The.

31:50

Day after, a haze took to

31:52

the stand in his own defense.

31:55

Final submissions were heard with Prosecutor

31:57

Richard. We're telling the jury that

31:59

the killing. Julie and disposal

32:01

of her body was close,

32:03

cold and calculated. He. Claims

32:05

that he's had waylaid Julie to

32:07

his home. Killed. Her and

32:10

cold anger and then packaged her

32:12

body for efficient disposal and a

32:14

cool and calm manner. Recounting:

32:16

Cases efforts to evade capture, We're

32:18

said that the accused only made

32:20

scant admissions when he realized that

32:22

police were closing in on him.

32:25

And. Even now he still hadn't revealed

32:27

the whole. Truth about what he had

32:29

done to Julie Tournaments. He

32:31

concluded his address by telling the jury that

32:33

the evidence and the case could only points.

32:35

To murder. And. That close. All.

32:38

The smoke and mirrors and the

32:40

world would not detract from this

32:42

hard core of hard evidence. And.

32:45

Hayes is defense. James gala her to

32:47

see describes Julie's death as an awful

32:50

event. He. Said that he is

32:52

carried out and unlawful assault and

32:54

as a result Julie died. Mr.

32:56

Gallagher agreed that the wrapping and storing

32:58

of Julie's body was a close dreadful

33:01

thing, gruesome and almost spine chilling. But

33:03

he warns the jury that while listening

33:05

to the case may have been awful,

33:08

it did not give them enough information

33:10

to determine his state of mind. He

33:13

said that despite what was hurt and.

33:15

Despise He's his own concession. The case

33:17

was not necessarily a simple one in

33:19

terms of what they might convict him

33:21

of. The. Qc pointed out that

33:24

there were a number of different verdicts that

33:26

they could reach depending on what they determined

33:28

Julie's cause of death to be. And

33:30

what they believed pays his intention was at

33:32

the time. James. Gala Her

33:35

reminded them that no matter what verdict

33:37

they came to, Adrian Hayes would not

33:39

walk out of the course of Free

33:41

Man. With. Sars

33:43

the jury retired to deliberate.

33:46

Just. Over an hour later, they

33:48

returned to the courtroom to deliver

33:50

their verdict, finding Adrian he's guilty

33:53

of murder. Case. Stood

33:55

motionless as the unanimous verdict was

33:57

read out while his estranged wife.

34:00

Una wept openly. Julie.

34:02

Tenants parents said they were glad to have

34:04

had justice for Julie and they hoped that

34:06

their family could know. Turned the page

34:09

of a very dark chapter. Julie's.

34:11

Mother told the press close. Know

34:14

sentence will bring Julie both to us, but

34:16

we have seen justice done today. Julie.

34:18

Will live on through us and we will

34:21

live for Julie. She was a dear dear

34:23

daughter. And. We miss are beyond words.

34:26

I least then went on to thank

34:28

police and the witnesses. Who testified.

34:31

For. Helping to bring Adrian Hayes to

34:33

justice. She. Continued close. Hayes is

34:35

an evil man who took a totally

34:37

healthy young girl's life away from her.

34:39

Our family would have never dreams this

34:42

would come to our door. We.

34:44

Will never be the same without Julie. However,

34:47

the tenant families sense that just

34:49

as had been done was short

34:51

lived. When. He was given a

34:54
