 YOUR FUTURE MEMOIR

Chapter 14 of the Memoirabilia podcast series on How to Write Memoir

based on the book, “Don’t Write Your MEmoir without ME’

©Viga Boland, author and book reviewer

At a guess, depending on how quickly you read this book…in one day? in several? in a month or more…your mind must be spinning a bit. It wouldn’t surprise me either if by now, that inner critic you wrote to back in Chapter 5, is paying you a return visit.

So do yourself, and me, a favor right now: put down this book; pick up your pen and paper and jot down all your thoughts, both negative and positive. Include anything that inner critic is whispering in your ear.

Write it freely, organically, with abandon. I’m not there looking over your shoulder. You don’t have to share it with me or anyone. Let it all out. And when you’re done, read it…OUT LOUD. Decide if you like what you are telling yourself. What you hear yourself saying will determine if there really is a MEmoir in your future.

Done?

imageSo, is there a MEmoir in your future?

What kind is it? Is it an autobiography made up of lots of little stories you want to leave as a legacy for your family? If so, then by now you’re probably hoping I’ll give you that one thing folks love getting at those workshops: writing prompts.

Sorry. Not going to do that. And my reason is the same as that given by Marion Roach Smith (www.marionroach.com) who’s been teaching memoir writing for years.

On her website, Marion bluntly states she feels all those writing prompts are a waste of time. Why? Because all her classes are “filled with people recovering from those very exercises, people whose sole relationship to writing was practicing, not writing for real.”

That’s exactly what I told you about in Chapter 4: those folks who kept coming back to my workshops but who, except for a couple, never ended up writing a book.

What did they come back for again and again? I’d love to say it’s because they found me so entertaining, motivating, inspiring. However, I suspect it’s more likely they returned for the repeated pleasure they felt in being part of a writing group; they enjoyed the mental stimulation, the social interaction.

There’s nothing wrong with that at all, but,Don’t Write Your MEmoir without ME was written for those with a specific reason for writing a memoir.

So, at this point, we reach a fork in the road toward the conclusion of this book. I offer you these two choices … YOU’LL HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE FULL PODCAST or BUY  Don’t Write Your MEmoir without ME to find out what those choices are LOL Till next time…Bye for now!
