WHY WRITING MEMOIR MATTERS

If everything I’ve shared with you in  “Don’t Write Your MEmoir without ME’ and in all the advice and editorials presented in the last few pages, hasn’t yet convinced you that writing memoir matters, then I urge you to get yourself a copy of THE MEMOIR REVOLUTION by JERRY WAXLER

Below is a book review I wrote of this amazing book and published in Memoirabilia Magazine #2 in May 2015. I was both blown away and inspired by what I read in Jerry’s book. Apart from facilitating memoir writing, like me, Jerry devotes much of his reading time to memoirs by both traditionally published and self-published writers. His website abounds with essays and reviews of memoirs.

So if I can’t convince you of the nobility and need for writing memoirs, perhaps Jerry can. Here’s what I think of “The Memoir Revolution” by Jerry Waxler:

“It’s rare for me to pick up a book and not be able to put it down. I’ve come close a couple of times when reading a true crime story, but never when reading a book about writing memoirs. But that’s what happened when I picked up MEMOIR REVOLUTION by Jerry Waxler. And before you say, “oh it’s another book about how to write your memoir”, let me assure you that isn’t what kept me riveted for four non-stop hours.

What was it then? It was Jerry Waxler’s undeniable passion for his subject: memoir writing. If you are postponing writing your memoir because that inner critic inside you insists no-one will want to read about your ordinary life, Jerry Waxler will have you thinking otherwise in no time. Waxler believes there’s a revolution taking place in writing and it’s all about writing what really matters, writing those stories that will help readers better understand mankind and all its differences in race, culture, color and religion. When ordinary, every day people share their truths, those differences shrink. And for the memoirists, as we write we too begin to better understand how our own pasts dictate our presents and impact our futures. This powerful revolution of understanding for both writers and readers rests in the pens and minds of those who choose to share their memories. Fiction is fine; it’s a release, an escape, but often quickly forgotten. Memoirs, those true stories of pain, hardship, love lost and found, battles waged and won are timeless.

Jerry Waxler is a therapist, memoir workshop facilitator, an author and prolific book reviewer. His personal website and his Memory Writers Network site are a “must” visit, full of invaluable information of interest to memoir writers and memoir readers. The book reviews and essays are incredible, as are Waxler’s writing prompts.

If you don’t pick up a copy of MEMOIR REVOLUTION, you’re missing out on one of the most motivational books ever. Thanks for reminding me Jerry Waxler why I write and read memoirs. 5 stars!”
