12-vuotias Johnny Gosch katosi jakaessaan sanomalehteä naapurustonsa asukkaille aikaisin sunnuntaiaamuna. Vaikka pojan kohtalosta ei ole oikeastaan mitään tietoa, uskoo hänen äitinsä Noreen siihen, että Johnny on edelleen elossa. Noreenin mukaan Johnny jopa ilmestyi yllättäen hänen ovensa taakse vuosia katoamisen jälkeen.
