The Seven Churches named in the Book of Revelation are prophetic eras as predicted by the head of the Church Jesus Christ.  Each one would have certain characteristics and challenges to face.  They range from the first era, Ephesus, when the Apostles lived, all the way to Laodecia, which would be active at Christ's return.
