Fluid careers happen in all industries, including education, not-for-profits, community, and government. We will be having a conversation with Gaea Honeycutt, CEO of Hypatian Institute, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that combines conventional and innovative approaches to deliver leadership education and development to closing the competitive advantage gapSM, focusing on women, people of color and people in low access communities. She has worked with organizations like Bentley University, the Education Development Center, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, and the Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce.

What s a fluid career?
Dana Theus has been observing a new career trend fluid careers. The average tenure of a job for professionals is 3.5 years. This means that someone could have up to 10-12 jobs in a lifetime and possibly 2-3+ careers. It is freeing, in that it gives people more control to design more work-life balance in their career over time, and anxiety-producing as it can feel less stable if one defines success as a job that lasts at least 10 years. This fluid employment trend takes into account the growth in both entrepreneurship and the Gig Economy, reductions in employee tenure, increases in employee dissatisfaction and increases in employee turnover.

Honeycutt is Founder and CEO of the Hypatian Institute, Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit organization that combines conventional and innovative approaches to deliver leadership education and development to closing the competitive advantage gapSM, focusing on women, people of color and people in low access communities. The Institute addresses the unique needs of individuals and small organizations small to mid-size businesses, social entrepreneurs, associations and nonprofits while using proceeds to support programs for youth.
Ms. Honeycutt is also Founder and CEO of G.L. Honeycutt Consulting, LLC, where she draws on diverse expertise in business development, diversity and inclusion, research, and communications to advise organizations on transforming goals into measurable, achievable action through tailored strategies. She has served entrepreneurs, research and development companies, small businesses, government agencies and nonprofits. As a Co-founder and Past Chairman of the Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce, she has been a vital connector for the community, using her intuitive and results-oriented leadership to build a multifaceted vision for advocacy for black-owned business.
She has written articles and delivered presentations on business, leadership, technology and social policy topics. Ms. Honeycutt serves on the DC Advisory Board of Peace First and Board of LearnServe International, and chairs the LearnServe Growth Council. She earned her MPP from the University of Chicago, and BA from Bentley University. She is a member of the Inaugural Class of the Masters Series for Distinguished Leaders and the Leadership Fairfax Class of 2012.
