A tip for cleaning out your closet is to use the 6-month rule, if it’s not a seasonal item and you haven’t used it for 6 months, it’s got to go.Take a look at why you feel like you need to have so many things.       Material items can be a security blanket for some, or make people think they are happier if they have more things.      When you do get your “get rid of” pile, consider donating the items that are still in good shape, and recycling items that aren’t.  Let’s not clutter up landfills any more than we need to.Use each room in the house for what it was made for:Living room is an inviting space for community and familyHave flat surfaces clutter free for games and activitiesHave a wastebasket nearbyOrganize your out-of-control cords with the electronicsHave a functional coffee tableStore extra blanks behind a sofa against a wallOrganize your movies so that you can find something fasterKitchen is where you create your meals to nourish you and bring family and friends together.  Organize by these grades:“A” is for items that you use daily, so choose the most accessible area, usually the counter or between waist and head level.“B” is for often, so put those on low or high shelves“C” is for seldom, those can live in the dark corners of cabinets and drawers.Bathroom keep it neat and cleanOrganize your medicine cabinet and be picky, it’s smallUse bins or baskets for your deodorant, hair products, lotions, makeupAdd creative towel storage like a shelf with basketsIn the shower, use a shower caddy, or shelves with suction cups mounted in the corner.Use the space above the toilets to install shelvesBedroom your sanctuary for relaxation and intimacyMake your bed every dayUse the space under your bed for storageBins or hanging bags for shoesTry a hanging organizer for your jewelry, with clear pocketsMake a cozy reading area with a comfy chair, small table and shelf for your favorite current booksHome OfficeGet the proper furniture to maximize the function and storageStore the items you use frequently in an easily accessible areaPlan the layout of your computer, printer, and conceal the cordsSo that you don’t fall back into your same old pattern, put things in their place and labels boxes and filing cabinets.  Follow the rule “a place for everything and everything in its place.”  ALWAYS put things back so you can find it the next time.  Clean and organize as you go, so that things don’t become overwhelming. Our ScheduleIf you don’t already use some kind of calendar, start today.  A desk, hanging, planner or digital calendar will help you keep on track with everything in your life.Cathy’s calendars:Personal tasks and appointmentsShared calendar for Cortney and meAnother shared calendar with my sonWork calendarSometimes when I don’t complete a task on a certain day, I move it to another day that fits better, so give yourself a break to be flexible with it, but don’t use it as a tool to procrastinate.I go by the rule of “if it’s important, I put it on the calendar”Workout classes like hot yogaChores I need to get done, including grocery lists, cooking/cleaningIf there is something I need to bring to work or to a friend’s housePrioritize your events:Start with the biggest tasksCreate a prioritized schedule for projects, including smaller steps broken down; emails to send, things you need to getWant to learn a new skill or hobby, set aside time weekly to do thatDevelop a daily routine:Prepare your meal menu for the week and pack your meals to take to workLayout your clothes the night before, it will save you time in the morningMake a daily list of things you want to accomplish and block off time to do themSocial life and relationships:Time with family for holidays and activitiesSet up fun times with friends“Me” time and self-care“Date nights” whether you’re single or in a relationshipYou can’t do everything and go everywhere, so prioritize what is important to you and your family, look at your tools and resources, the time invested in activities, and what things you will enjoy most and will help you accomplish your goals. Our GoalsWe set goals and are so excited about our new idea and we just trust everything will fall into place, but without a plan, we won’t succeed. Have you clearly defined your goal? What have you been using and doing to fulfill your goal? What skills do you need to develop? When are you the most productive? How do you work the most effectively and efficiently?Once you’ve answered these questions, then make a plan:Make short term objectives, a few weeks or a month.Make medium range objectives, maybe several months to a year.Make long term objective, in the distant future.Staying on track and being motivated:Write down your goals and be specificUse the SMART method: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevent and Time-bounded.Create an “action list” to map out how you’re going to “get there”Dedicate time towards your goal and create a routineTrack your progressMake changes where you need toMake deadlines so you work towards your accomplishmentsReward yourself when you’ve reached the small and large milestonesBeing organized makes the things we have to do more convenient and efficient, which leaves more time for doing the things we want to with the people we care about.Things that make you go Hmmm? Or Mmmm:This weeks Mmmm?    An app that makes you stop apologizing.  Chrome came out with downloadable extension in their browser to help women stop saying “just” and “sorry” in emails.  It will also look for words or phrases that undermine your authority and dilute your leadership capacity.  They are trying to create better habits by saying “sometimes the environment needs to change in order to enable better behavior.”Well that’s it for today's show and we hope you join us next week.  Thank you:We would like to give a shout out!  A huge thank you to;20 skin care tips everyone should master, Mind Body Green article by Allie WhiteCluttered house, cluttered mind,  Well Africa article by Ekene OnuHome organization articles by HGTV.comStop Saying “Just” and “Sorry” in emails, Slate article by Christina CauterucciLive a Beautiful Life, a blog by Malavika Suresh10 Ways to Organize Your Thoughts and Never Lose Ideas Again, lifehack.org article by Daniel WallenQuote of the week:We will leave you with a quote:“The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step” - Chinese proverbWe would love to hear from you, so check us out on Facebook or at www.homoliciousliving.com.
