I got my first shot of the vaccine yesterday so was feeling a little under the weather and needed something to listen to as my day slowly passed.Enter the perfect show - Histories of the Unexpected by Dr Sam Willis and Professor James Daybell. It’s part of the History Hit network so you know it’s going to be good and, as the host’s titles tell you, they know their stuff. Each episode they cover a single topic on subjects as diverse as snails, blood, gloves and holes! They approach them all from unexpected angles, firing facts and nuggets of information at you in a swift back and forth. The podcast works so well as the hosts live and breath history, they have a real understanding and depth of knowledge that comes from being immersed in it and are natural presenters (just check their bios!). They’re also good friends and their rapport really comes across and makes for easy listening. You can stick this podcast on and happily let the knowledge sink in, listening to two history heavyweights chatting and just having a good time. They make it so accessible; you don’t feel daunted by them being a Dr and Professor of history. If you’re after a show that covers the less obvious, less well trodden parts of history or one where the hosts haven’t just researched the topic for a single episode look no further than Unexpected Histories!
