Have you noticed that the history behind holidays like Columbus Day, or the various presidential holidays, have slowly been forgotten? Should Christians care?

God repeatedly teaches us that it is important to study history to know the works of God and understand where we are from and where we are going(Psalm 78, etc.). A proper God-glorifying History also gives us hope, as Romans 15:4 says of the Old Testament (which is largely a history book): “Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”

History teaches us to hope by giving us a sense of destiny and strength, when we know that we are carrying the baton of previous generations of godly and fearless believers and look forward to His promises coming to pass. Christ is building His Church, and His Kingdom, that started as a stone that broke to pieces the kingdoms of man, is slowly growing into a mountain, which will undoubtedly, fill the whole earth! (Daniel 2)

Robert E. Lee, a Southern General in the war between the states, made this great statement:

“The truth is this: The march of Providence is so slow, and our desires so impatient; the work of progress is so immense and our means of aiding it so feeble; the life of humanity is so long, that of the individual so brief, that we often see only the ebb of the advancing wave and are thus discouraged. It is history that teaches us to hope.”

Marshall Foster, is a Christian Historian, specializing in American history and heritage. In this message, he traces the trials and triumphs of believers through the ages, and God’s providence in the course of human events… Image below: Wicked King John is forced to sign the Magna Carta at Runnymede on June 15, 1215 A.D.
