Yo yo yo . Welcome back to the Further your Lifestyle
0:02
podcast conversations on lifestyle passions
0:04
and hustles . My name's Chris , I am your host
0:06
and I'm super excited to be back here having
0:09
the conversation with you Episode
0:11
166 today , and we're
0:13
talking about a topic which has
0:15
really pushed me into some conviction and it's a bit of
0:17
a personal reflection . The concept has
0:19
come from a bit of a personal reflection because I
0:21
was challenged
0:24
by this when I read it myself , and the quote
0:26
is by Jersey Gregorick and
0:28
it says easy choices , hard
0:30
life , hard choices , easy
0:33
life . And the basis of this quote is
0:35
that if we decide to do things which make
0:37
our life seem easy in the short term , we
0:39
will have to make some harder actions later
0:41
in life . And if we make the hard choices in
0:43
the short term , things can be easier
0:46
in the long term . Now , with
0:48
this , I need to give you a bit more context
0:50
and I'll explain it to you right now before we really
0:52
dive into it . But the reality is easy
0:54
choices , hard life . Basically
0:56
, we're talking about instant gratification . We
0:59
choosing the easier path often involves
1:01
seeking immediate pleasure or avoiding
1:04
discomfort , so this might mean like procrastinating
1:06
or unhealthy eating or
1:08
avoiding the challenging tasks the
1:10
consequences of this . It can
1:12
lead to long-term difficulties with poor health
1:15
, financial instability , lack
1:18
of personal or professional growth , and the short-term ease
1:20
results in compounded difficulties over time . And the short-term ease results
1:22
in compounded difficulties over time
1:24
. Where , on the contrary , if we look at hard
1:26
choices , easy life is delayed
1:28
gratification . That's what the main point
1:30
of this whole episode is . When
1:36
we opt into the harder path , it involves making decisions that will be uncomfortable in
1:38
the short term but are super beneficial in the long run , and this
1:40
includes habits like exercising or saving
1:42
money and continuous learning . Run
1:45
. And this includes habits like exercising or saving money and continuous learning . And
1:47
rewards of this are these choices build resilience
1:49
, it improves our health and it enhances our
1:51
skills , and it leads to a more
1:53
fulfilling life or a stable life
1:56
, and the short-term struggle
1:58
results in compounded benefits
2:00
over time . Now , a good example of this is if
2:02
I choose to just not eat junk
2:04
food today , it might mean I
2:06
don't have to go spend three hours in the
2:08
gym to work that off right , whereas
2:11
if you're consistently doing walking as
2:14
well , and where you
2:16
weren't doing any exercise at all , you might be creating
2:19
heart issues . I'm not saying that's what it will do
2:21
, but because you're just doing a small thing , you're making
2:23
the decision . I'm just going to do this consistently over
2:25
a long time , rather than trying to cram it and fix
2:27
yourself up at a very last time or
2:29
at a very last resort when you've
2:31
already sick or something . It's not going to make much of a
2:33
difference . So this is the topic that we're
2:35
going to get into today . It is deep . There's
2:37
going to be a few different ways that we're going to get into this . I
2:40
know it all sounds easy , but hear me out
2:42
, stick around . I think it'll be worth it for you . Let's
2:44
roll the intro . So
2:51
how can we apply all of this to our life ? What
2:54
can we do ? And I know
2:56
, as I said before , all of this can sound a little bit
2:58
easy and what we're about to discuss is probably
3:00
going to sound a little bit cliche and easy , but
3:02
the reality is they're hard To
3:05
put these things into practice , to show up daily
3:07
, to be consistent . It's hard work , and
3:09
that's what we're going to be talking about when
3:12
we apply things in our daily life . Like
3:14
, for instance , if we talk about health , we can choose
3:16
to exercise and eat healthy , and
3:18
this may be hard , but it leads to a longer
3:21
, healthier life . So by doing the
3:23
small thing today gives us the long-term
3:25
like short-term pain for long-term gain
3:27
. That's essentially what we're talking about here . Finances
3:30
If we have a budget , if we learn how to spend
3:32
properly , if we learn how to save properly , if
3:40
we learn how to invest properly and do it on a consistent basis rather than focusing on impulses , it
3:42
does ensure that we have the financial security . The same
3:44
thing applies with our careers . When we take
3:46
on a challenging project and we seek continuous
3:48
improvement , we can advance
3:50
our career , we can advance our personal growth , whereas
3:53
if you delay doing that because you're too scared , you
3:55
won't make the move in the right direction
3:58
in terms of becoming a better version of yourself . This
4:00
also applies with relationships . I'm just giving you some examples
4:03
here of how we can apply it . When
4:09
we put effort into communicating and having a conversation , even if it's a tough conversation or
4:11
a scary conversation , it leads to a stronger and more meaningful connection
4:13
. That's really what we're trying to talk about here
4:15
. What are some of the other things that we can talk about here ? For
4:18
me personally , a good example of this
4:20
is business and
4:22
running . Running I have to train for 21
4:24
weeks to do a 50K ultramarathon
4:28
and those 21 or 22
4:30
weeks . I have to show up , I have
4:32
to do the daily work so that in the
4:34
long run I know that I can do
4:36
the long run Building my business . At the moment I'm
4:38
looking at this from a
4:40
seven-year perspective . I'm not going to be
4:43
successful overnight , but I do need to do daily
4:45
things . I need to show up every day , I need to work and
4:47
get the experience . I need to figure out how
4:49
do we make better profitability
4:51
, how do we grow the business ? How do
4:53
I take on staff ? How do I learn
4:55
to leverage money better
4:57
? How do I learn to benefit
5:00
from cashflow ? How do I learn about payment
5:02
terms ? All these different things . They only come
5:04
from doing these small decisions on a daily
5:06
basis and keeping in system
5:08
, because then things start to snowball
5:10
. In the longer run , things will just work
5:12
better because I've got the experience , we've figured
5:15
it out and we now have
5:17
all that knowledge , power , understanding
5:19
, experience under our belts . It makes
5:21
it a lot easier . So
5:23
, health and fitness I already touched on this a little
5:25
bit . For me , originally
5:28
, before I started losing weight , I
5:30
was doing running , but then the
5:33
running didn't cut it . It was eating all the naughty foods
5:35
, cutting out that junk food on a regular basis
5:37
rather than eating the junk food on a regular
5:39
basis meant I didn't have to do as much in the gym . It
5:42
made it a lot easier . So you'll
5:44
want to find the quick win . I think
5:46
back in the day I remember when they released
5:49
Krispy Kremes . Now , if you're here in Australia , the
5:51
MCG in Melbourne , victoria , is our
5:53
Melbourne cricket ground . It's huge , massive , I think
5:55
they said when
5:57
the first Krispy Kremes opened in Victoria
6:00
. They said to burn
6:02
off the calories of one of those , you would
6:04
have to basically run from where
6:06
that Krispy Kreme shop was to
6:08
the MCG , which was about
6:10
45 kilometers . That's
6:14
how far you had to run to burn off the
6:16
calorie of one donut . Now 45K
6:18
is basically a half marathon . Of
6:23
one donut Now 45K is basically a half marathon . Last time I ran 45 kilometers
6:25
it probably took me five to five and a half hours . Yep , so
6:27
you eat one Krispy Kreme in 30 seconds and
6:29
it's going to take you five and a half hours to burn
6:32
it off . You see my point here Making
6:34
decisions . I'm not saying don't have Krispy Kremes , I'm
6:37
just saying don't have 10 Krispy Kremes , right
6:39
, because if you do , you're going to have to be doing a lot
6:41
of exercise to offset it . And
6:43
it's not about being skinny , it's not about jazz , it's
6:45
just seriously about just keeping yourself healthy
6:48
and fit . Another
6:50
example in career development we pursue further
6:53
education , or when we take on challenging projects
6:55
, or when we take on a new role or
6:57
when we get a promotion . All these things help us
6:59
grow . It's not going to be easy at the start
7:01
. It's going to be rough . It's going to be tough . We're
7:03
going to have to get uncomfortable , we're
7:09
going to have to learn new things . We might have to be humble and maybe we make
7:11
some mistakes and we get a bit embarrassed , but that's part of the career developing progress
7:14
or the process , right ? Is we
7:16
do all these things now , like if you're having to learn how
7:18
to bake , if you're having to learn how to cook , like
7:21
it takes a lot of work to figure it out
7:23
because it's not easy , you don't , you've never done it before
7:25
. But once you've done it 10 times , it's
7:27
like yeah , whatever , it's simple , right , it's
7:29
the same thing . This all same applies
7:31
for financial decisions , relationships . Mental
7:34
resilience is a big one . How do we build
7:36
that mental toughness ? Making the hard decisions
7:38
today , setting
7:42
in the boundaries to remove the things that really do trigger us off , but also
7:44
like the balance of instant and delayed gratification
7:47
. Do we really want this gratification just
7:49
today , or are we wanting a long-term
7:51
gratification over a long period of time , for that
7:53
longer-term happiness ? Looking at
7:55
this , we can think about daily habits . How
7:57
do we apply things in a small means
8:00
per day to keep things consistent
8:02
over a longer period of time ? Which compound which
8:04
will give us better benefits ? Right , it's
8:07
like back in the day they used to say I don't
8:09
know who says it , I don't know if it's proven Do 10,000
8:11
steps a day or do a 30 minute walk . It
8:13
just helps in the long run to keep
8:15
yourself healthy , your heart moving and your
8:17
blood pumping . We need to be thinking
8:20
about our long-term vision . What is your long-term
8:22
vision ? Where do you want to be in 10 years
8:24
? What is that going to look like ? Are you wanting to
8:26
be ? What do you want to be doing with your budget
8:28
? What about your health ? What about your relationships
8:30
? What are you doing today and every
8:32
day for the next 10 years to ensure
8:34
that those things , consistently , will
8:37
be where you want them to be ? There's
8:39
things that we can control and there's things that we can't until
8:41
we get opportunity , until situations
8:44
occur . I know people that have said oh , I want
8:46
to have a business and I want to be a business owner in a couple of
8:48
years . It's okay . What's your business now ? Oh , I
8:50
don't have one . How can you be a business
8:53
owner if you haven't ? How can you have a successful business
8:55
or be operating , have a cafe
8:57
or something , if you don't even have a plan to get
8:59
there ? Figure out what are the steps you've got to do
9:01
and work towards it , and it might mean
9:03
learning , reading , taking
9:06
crash courses , getting help , getting a mentor
9:08
, doing all these little things to get
9:11
us to where we want to be . I've got a list of questions that we
9:13
can ask ourselves . I'm just going to chuck out a few here
9:15
. I'm not going to answer them , it's really just a playback
9:17
to yourself , but if there's something that
9:19
tickles my fancy , I might dive
9:22
into it a bit more . Just going to have a sip of
9:24
coffee , but questions
9:26
we can be asking ourselves . What are some of the easy choices
9:28
we tend to make ? For me it's donuts , man
9:30
, donut , I'm down to have a donut . So those
9:33
little things is what we're talking about . What are some
9:35
of the long-term consequences of these easy choices
9:37
. It's not doing me any benefits , is it ? What
9:39
are some hard choices we've made in the past
9:41
and how have they benefited us ? I think
9:43
learning how to save early and managing my
9:46
money at a younger age has been really beneficial
9:48
for me , but that's an example right . In
9:50
what areas of my life can I start making harder
9:52
choices for better outcomes ? Look , I could
9:55
probably list out 10
9:57
things that I can do better . It's
9:59
hard to do it . I get it . So I think my
10:01
challenge to you is can we find one thing and
10:04
focus on that one thing , get that in
10:06
control and then we move on to that ? How do we
10:08
handle discomfort when faced with hard choices
10:10
? What are some of the strategies we
10:12
can use to make hard choices easy
10:14
to follow through on ? Yeah
10:17
, you've got to think about that as well . It's easy to say , okay
10:19
, I'm not going to do this , but how are you going to handle
10:21
it ? Have a plan . Who are some
10:24
of the people that you can look up
10:26
to or leverage in terms
10:28
of who has gone through this and consistently
10:30
made the hard choices , and what can we
10:32
learn from them ? How can we stay motivated to
10:34
make the hard choices when the easy path is so tempting
10:37
, a hundred percent . You've got to figure this out . You've got
10:39
to have a game plan . What role
10:41
do habits play in making these hard decisions
10:43
for you ? You want to make these things easy for you , right
10:46
? If they can become a habit , just a back
10:49
of your hand nature kind of style . You
10:51
need to figure out that as well . I think this
10:53
is an important one . How can I support others in making
10:55
hard choices for a better life ? Maybe
10:57
it's accountability , maybe it's reaching out with a friend
10:59
. Maybe it's doing what I'm doing here
11:01
and sharing with other peoples and challenging people , keeping
11:03
people honest . I do have a couple of tips that
11:06
I will share with you . I think number one is we
11:08
do need to start small . We can't expect to be going
11:10
in and just changing our lives with all these hard choices
11:12
. When I wanted to lose weight I'm
11:14
talking about 10 years ago
11:16
I went cold turkey . I cut out
11:18
all sugar and I made a really hard decision
11:21
and it was hard . But
11:23
maybe we just need to make some small ones and be consistent
11:26
with it . We do need to set clear goals , right
11:28
? We need to define what are we trying to achieve
11:30
here in the long run and make sure
11:32
we align our choices with those goals
11:34
and also align our values as well . Find
11:38
some accountability I just discussed about that . Find
11:42
someone that can keep you honest or that you
11:44
can keep honest , that can help you get
11:46
through those hard choices , because they're not easy . We
11:48
also need to reflect regularly , like on
11:50
a regular basis , with this , because if
11:52
we're just making like , just trying to
11:54
move forward and we're not actually coming back
11:57
and just regrouping and reflecting and seeing how
11:59
the outcomes have occurred from our choices , we
12:01
might miss opportunities to adjust . So
12:04
do reflect on a regular basis . I
12:06
think the most important one is celebrate
12:08
the successes or the small wins . As
12:10
you do make the progress , as you do get the hard choice
12:12
win , make sure you do have a positive
12:15
outcome from it . Celebrate the positive outcome , reinforce
12:17
it with positivity . Make sure you get
12:19
that gratification from the sense of okay
12:21
, I've done this hard thing . No
12:24
, I don't get to have that other thing that I would like , but
12:26
I am going to celebrate it and I'm going to do this
12:28
to make sure it reinforces my head . Yes
12:30
, I want to do more of this . That is the secret
12:33
here . That will just build
12:35
that momentum very quickly . That's
12:38
what I've got today . Folks , if this resonated with
12:40
you , please do share it with someone . If you've got any questions
12:42
or you want to continue the conversation , you can jump over
12:44
to the socials . You can jump over to the YouTube and
12:47
leave a comment . Let's continue the conversation . I'd
12:49
love to hear from you what are some of the things you're
12:51
doing or how do you handle
12:53
this kind of conversation . It's not
12:55
easy , right ? I
13:05
know we want to be making easy choices , but it creates a hard life . But if
13:07
we can make the hard choices , I guarantee you we will have the easy life . That's it today . Really do appreciate
13:09
you being here . You have a wonderful day . Cheers .
