Pack a fresh apple and hop aboard the Caulder spacecraft, friends, as our very own pioneers of the uncharted, Craig and James, make good on their promise to return to the zany world of DC/HBO Max’s Doom Patrol, casting their shadowy cranial periscopes over the events of season two.
Have your side clamps at the ready as they revisit the rip-roaring, hellzapoppin spectacles of Danny the Brick’s epic rebirth, the salacious emergence of the Sex-Men, Steele & Stone gettin’ it done, and the king-size delights served up by fun-size heroes. It’s not all fun and games, though, as dark portents flicker in the mind of newcomer Dorothy Spinner, grim realisations draw Larry and Rita towards fateful familial fixes, Cyborg gets more heat than he bargained for in the romance game, and there’s forbidden truths revealed and blood tragically shed in The Underground.
It all adds up to a fairground ride of a podcast that encompasses discussions of the importance and meaning of 20th-century iconography; analyses of persistent themes of abuse, quests for redemption, generational trauma and attempts to move on; critiques of restrictive patriarchal standards that present themselves as liberatory; and the eternally recurring question of how this show about a ramshackle collection of absurd misfits manages to fit so much story and humanity in just nine episodes.
PLUS - Following an infestation of scants, our hosts considered it a good idea to hand the reins of the usual podcast-within-a-podcast to a special guest presenter! It’s all pretty hush-hush - all we can say is that the guest host in question is a close personal friend of Cyborg’s Grid.
