In this episode I’m going to introduce you to “died-in-the-wool” Afrikaners: true men and women of the land, whose forebears came to South Africa from many parts of Europe to create a new life, a new nation. Afrikaners were always vilified as the “villains” of South Africa – mainly by the English-speaking and international community who portrayed them as oppressors, persecutors, nationalistic, crude and intransigent. They were scorned them as unsophisticated, vulgar, simple-minded. But the ordinary Afrikaner was generally a humble, straightforward, often devout son – or daughter – of the soil, seeking only to carve out their own nationality and place in the world.
