2:05

chat with you reason with you Today

2:07

we're at Lord's the iconic venue

2:09

in England and we've got there's

2:12

a very special evening ahead of

2:14

us in conjunction with the Antigua

2:16

Barbuda Tourist board,

2:18

I think let's stop there because it's only right

2:20

we start there It

2:22

might sound like a strange question to ask you but do want to ask

2:25

you this. What does Antigua and Barbuda

2:27

mean to you? Well,

2:29

I haven't skipped a go first, you

2:32

know, being out of respect. After with

2:34

my turn, the skipper should go first

2:36

and then I follow I'll give him

2:38

the go ahead No

2:42

Antigua Barbuda, you know, we are

2:44

a proud nation, right?

2:46

We're very resilient and anything

2:48

that we do, we want to be the best at

2:51

it Just because of our

2:53

pride and you know, we

2:55

as legends of the game Will

2:57

do whatever it takes to promote Antigua

3:00

Barbuda in a positive way and

3:02

anytime you want to go on a vacation One

3:04

of the places is relaxed to chill and Antigua

3:07

Barbuda is a place to come Skipper

3:09

follow that.

3:12

I try and follow that I

3:14

can tell you that Antigua means so much, you know

3:16

because You were born

3:18

there as an Antigua and Barbuda and

3:21

we are in the tourism package and We

3:24

have been utilized in so many ways for

3:26

us to try and promote them to

3:29

to send the best message What

3:31

holiday in an Antigua can

3:33

be? You know it is first of all We

3:36

would have heard the beaches at the beginning

3:39

and then when we start from there the people

3:41

in itself We are the most

3:44

vibrant Watching test mass cricket

3:46

in Antigua That's where it all started in a

3:48

big way with and it would have spread throughout

3:50

the whole region to cheeky

3:52

high-fi And The whole

3:55

Caribbean Basically is a buzz about the

3:57

entertainment that you can get at matches.

4:00

The best! Place in the well in my

4:02

opinion. Few to and to visit and if

4:04

you want to be entertained but some of

4:06

the best cricket. And.

4:08

People: Antigua and Barbuda It's a

4:11

place. And a

4:13

five hour and. Get

4:17

it out loud but that were having

4:20

them and of course whenever West Indies

4:22

played England and he was one and

4:24

he abuses one of popular and venues

4:26

for English fans to to constantly written

4:29

in the Woke Up Coming Up in

4:31

a couple of months some England are

4:33

based on, the games are based in

4:35

Anti Gun and I'll be during the

4:38

infant and Bobby during the group stages.

4:40

Australia will be there, Oman, Scotland, Acts.

4:44

Like eating being despite some to

4:46

go back. Seat

4:49

of my First of all you

4:51

know the people. We have a

4:53

friendly. We. Only aggressive when

4:56

you're competing hence in guns. Used

4:58

to see more than once. Mckenna

5:00

did what we are wonderful people.

5:03

From. Hospitable in Antarctica is just

5:05

a loving on the bar Buda.

5:08

just a loving to Dallas feet.

5:10

You can relax without any fear.

5:13

And hence I reckon. On

5:16

the cricket as well. so a hands in

5:18

a more than english for to love com

5:20

it once he got because basically. You'd

5:23

have to work with anything under

5:25

get everything. The cuisine, you

5:27

know if you're drinker the one

5:29

and all that in on party

5:31

music so until your by be

5:33

as a special place. Even

5:36

in spite of all the defeats ban

5:38

on a related and things don't want

5:40

to come back to our assess because

5:42

I thought of the is that the

5:44

fullest place at. the

5:47

maybe by the another still them a

5:49

lot of remnants of our our colonial

5:51

past statements and sam you have done

5:53

as as dockyard and there's so many

5:55

little things some from the past that

5:57

you can see such think some of

5:59

that also designates with

6:02

the English public and the fan who comes

6:05

up, apart from seeing a proper game of

6:07

cricket, having the best fun that you ever

6:09

have in your life, and

6:11

that's what it's all about. Antigua is just an

6:14

barbie, you'll never forget him, the barbie was with me

6:16

mad with me, if I

6:18

didn't. So we are

6:21

a state of sister and brother in a

6:24

big, big way, so at least

6:26

you've got to make everyone feel at home. We

6:29

mentioned the World Cup, obviously, like I say, it's

6:31

on the horizon, West Indies are hosting the World

6:33

Cup across the region. I'm

6:35

sure you've been asked before, but I've never asked you it,

6:37

so I will, I will ask the question. T20,

6:41

and currently I'm asking you first, because I know Vib has definitely

6:43

been asked before, how would you have

6:45

gone in T20 cricket? Honestly, how

6:47

do you think if your

6:50

skillset with the way

6:52

the game is played today, how

6:54

effective do you think you would have been? Well,

6:57

if you know me, I know me well, you

6:59

know that I believe very

7:02

strongly in my ability, it

7:04

doesn't matter what the circumstances are, I've

7:06

always believed that I can come out on top. Now

7:09

the mentality I had, T20

7:11

cricket is a shorter version, battles

7:14

will go hard at you from ball one. I

7:17

believe if I have to play T20, I

7:19

will develop a bit more skills,

7:23

because you need to be skillful in

7:25

different ways. So I would

7:27

develop some more skills to try and outfox the batters.

7:30

But I believe I would have done okay in

7:32

T20, and the returns are

7:35

great, so why not? I

7:38

can even expand on that as well also.

7:41

You heard Kathy mention about the fact that he'd

7:44

have to develop some more skills. He

7:46

had one skill, in my opinion, that

7:48

would have killed it

7:51

in terms of the yorker. And

8:03

Vib, so everyone always says that you

8:05

were the modern T-20 player in terms

8:07

of within your

8:13

particular era. Do you

8:15

look at the current batters in

8:17

this format of the game and think

8:19

they're doing anything out

8:22

of the ordinary from the batting fundamentals

8:25

or do you think they are taking the game

8:28

forward? What I find

8:30

as well, it's really exciting at times what

8:32

you see many times, but what I find

8:34

sometimes can be quite puzzling

8:37

is that you would maybe see

8:39

a Test match player before and

8:41

then after seeing him you see this

8:43

guy with this magnificent technique and then

8:45

all of a sudden because of the

8:47

T-20 he

8:49

loses that. And I find

8:52

maybe a lot of Indian batsmen as well,

8:54

they were some of the best players that

8:56

have been in my opinion over the years

8:58

and because of the shot playing factors that

9:00

come in to T-20, we're losing

9:02

that so called technique in

9:04

terms of the tight defense and

9:07

what batmanship was all about. Nowadays

9:09

a guy feels good if he

9:11

gets an inside edge, goes on to find it. So

9:18

it's different in that particular way. I

9:21

believe a sound technique does help because

9:24

when you have certain deliveries coming from the big

9:26

man here at times, if your technique

9:28

is not good you're going to get done. So

9:31

having a good technique as well in

9:33

order to prolong your innings in order

9:35

for you to be at the wicked

9:37

scoring runs, it is vitally important. Indeed.

9:41

Let's talk off the pitch slightly. The

9:45

two of you and Richie and Andy

9:47

the four nights etc. Viv,

9:50

you've recently returned from the PSL. I

9:53

saw you running on the pitch after. Okay,

9:56

running, running. You were trying something. I'm

10:00

a very passionate individual when it comes to my

10:02

team and regardless of who I'm representing. And

10:12

after we've done that, I forgot that I had a

10:14

little dodgy knee. But

10:17

emotion got to me big

10:19

time. And that's what it's all

10:21

about. The amazing thing about it

10:23

is I don't think I would

10:25

have done anything before that would have gone

10:27

viral. But

10:30

it took something of that nature in order

10:32

for me to accomplish that. It's

10:34

all good fun. The reason I bring

10:36

it up and currently I was going to make reference to a

10:39

couple of years ago, Talawas winning CPL.

10:42

You were heavily involved within that. And

10:44

I bring those two points up in terms

10:46

of your influences off the field with different

10:48

teams around the world, etc. You were recently

10:50

in Guyana doing a

10:53

coaching, Burpees, I believe. I

10:56

asked Andy and Richie, this number to

10:58

ask you to the same to kind of finish this

11:00

off. If you could click your fingers tomorrow and

11:02

change anything about West Indies cricket

11:06

that you believe would not make an

11:08

instant change to our

11:10

fortunes, but maybe further down the line,

11:13

what would you do or what would you choose to

11:15

change? Well,

11:18

it will take a lot because the

11:20

situation we're in at the moment. But

11:23

I believe that if you get the right personnel

11:25

to run the cricket, I

11:28

believe the cricket can get better. We

11:31

always have talent. That's no

11:33

question. But I think the right personnel

11:35

has to be in the right position to

11:37

get the cricket forward. And if we can do that,

11:40

we're going to be on our way. And of

11:42

course, one of the biggest factors that

11:44

hamper in West Indies cricket is incelarity.

11:48

If we can get rid of that, the cricket

11:50

will get better. When

11:55

you hear the big man would have delivered such a sub

11:57

statement, how can you follow that? But

12:01

to simply say that we need individuals

12:04

who run the system

12:06

to listen a bit more, to

12:09

people who understand, not

12:11

because you are a Rhodes Scholar and

12:13

you've been to the biggest university,

12:16

or wherever you may have been, the

12:20

folks you may listen to, they have their diplomas

12:22

as well, in terms of what

12:24

they bring to the

12:26

table in terms of moving Westerners'

12:28

cricket forward. Just to listen

12:31

a bit more to the

12:33

folks who matters. Go

13:32

Dave, Yeah Randy! Since we found

13:35

13:37

13:39

13:41

soft or disgustingly cosy weight, but

13:44

I Gotta Bombers have certainly comfortable

Purchase. So Vivian

14:03

Richards and Sir Kurt The Ambrose chatting to

14:05

me at Lourdes as we celebrated cricket and

14:08

culture with the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority.

14:10

Next up I spoke with two more West

14:13

Indies greats as I sat down with both

14:15

Sir Andy Roberts and Sir Richie Richardson. So

14:17

I'm delighted to be here today with the

14:19

Richie Richardson, I should say Sir Richie Richardson

14:21

and Sir Andy Roberts at

14:24

Lourdes ahead of a fantastic

14:26

evening that we have planned today in

14:29

conjunction with the Antigua and Barbuda Tourist

14:31

Board. First things first

14:33

gentlemen, I should ask this question, how are

14:35

you finding it in a cold? It's not very sunny

14:37

right now but how are you finding it in a

14:40

in blighty as they say? Cold.

14:49

Well do you know what the original

14:51

plan was to do the interview outside.

14:53

You were already on. I

14:56

said I think Richie and Andy will be fine

14:58

with that, let's just go outside and I took

15:00

a step and said no, we're going to have

15:02

to come back inside and do this one. But

15:05

let's get into it first things first. Obviously

15:07

like you say this event today is in

15:09

conjunction with the Antigua and

15:11

Barbuda Tourist Board. The

15:13

first thing I want to know and it seems like a

15:15

silly question to ask but I presume

15:18

a lot of people haven't asked you this really before. What

15:21

does your nation mean

15:23

to you? Everyone always talks

15:25

about cricket and XYZ but just Antigua and

15:27

Barbuda in itself, what does it actually mean

15:29

to you as a nation and an island?

15:32

A place that would never swap anything

15:34

in the world. It's

15:36

the most lovely country that

15:39

I have been to. London,

15:42

out of the question. Far

15:45

too cold for me. But

15:47

Antigua we have nice weather 365 days of the

15:50

year. Indeed

15:54

and Richie? Well it's

15:56

home and it's a place that I

15:58

look forward to going back to whenever I leave. our shows.

16:01

I'm always home sick whenever I leave Antigua

16:03

and I always wanted to go back because

16:05

of the natural beauty that we have. Good

16:09

weather throughout the year, 365 days as

16:11

I've certainly said, wonderful

16:14

culture, people are

16:16

always happy, we're welcoming people, we love to

16:18

have people come to our shows and we

16:20

love to party and have fun but we

16:22

also love to work hard, we have beautiful

16:24

beaches, beautiful food, culture

16:26

and it's just a place to be.

16:30

I feel very very relaxed when I'm in

16:32

Antigua and Babita, no pressure, whatever, it doesn't

16:34

matter where I go, no half enough, no

16:36

pressure and I just love being there. And

16:38

then, sorry, have you been there? No I haven't,

16:41

do you know what I was just about there?

16:43

I was born in Jamaica so

16:45

I'm trying to see from your

16:47

responses which is higher than Antigua

16:49

or Jamaica but you're giving a

16:51

good response. But

16:54

obviously Antigua and Babita is very very

16:56

popular, the cricketing context is very very

16:59

popular for travelling England fans, any time there

17:01

is any kind

17:03

of international match held between the West Indians

17:05

and England you can guarantee that there will

17:07

be a travelling horde of

17:09

English fans to those games.

17:12

But from an outside perspective,

17:14

what do you think that

17:16

they find so enjoyable about

17:18

repeated trips to the

17:20

island? The people, the

17:23

ones which are most

17:26

English, enjoy more than

17:28

the country and

17:31

the atmosphere. Once you are

17:34

at cricketing in Antigua there is a

17:36

different atmosphere than anywhere else you

17:38

can encounter. Indeed,

17:40

any further to that strategy? Well as I

17:43

said before, the hospitality, we love to host

17:45

people especially when they come

17:48

for cricket and give them a good time. Especially

17:51

if we are beating the opposition. So

17:53

we take them into all the rum

17:55

shops and give them some of our

17:57

local cuisine and give them lots of

17:59

beer. and good rum. You know we have the

18:01

best rum in the Caribbean. That

18:04

might be under the paper. What

18:06

I should say is that we

18:08

have the best rum in the

18:10

Caribbean, including Antigua and Barbie, the

18:12

English album. But yes,

18:15

hospitality is the main thing. Good

18:17

weather, you know, and

18:19

cricket in the Caribbean is

18:21

like noise. We were the

18:24

first to create a party

18:26

carnival atmosphere by having music

18:29

and dancing and comedy during

18:32

a live cricket match. So we have set that

18:34

trend and now it's being done around the world,

18:36

especially in T20 cricket. So we are very proud

18:38

of that. You notice we

18:40

never said the beaches. Yes, that's

18:43

the one thing that you know,

18:45

because it's given that the best

18:47

beaches you can find anywhere is between

18:50

Antigua and Barbie. And

18:53

I think Barbie will have better beaches than

18:55

Antigua itself. You're selling it well

18:57

to me, you know. No, Barbie is actually a

18:59

beach that has pinks on it. And I'm not

19:01

lying, you must go and check it out. Well,

19:04

you mentioned T20 and we're talking about

19:06

World Cup coming up in the horizon

19:08

less than a month, if it's just

19:10

over a month and a half away.

19:12

And Antigua will have matches, obviously, and

19:14

Barbie will have matches throughout the World

19:16

Cup. I believe it's the group with

19:19

England and Australia

19:22

and Scotland,

19:24

Oman, etc.

19:26

What does it mean to the island to be

19:29

able to host? Obviously, we've had World Cups in

19:31

the Caribbean before, but what does it mean to

19:33

be able to host a

19:36

big global event on the

19:38

island and of course in the latter stages of

19:40

the tournament as well? Well,

19:42

I think because

19:45

of what transpired years ago with

19:47

the type of cricketers that comes

19:49

out of Antigua, people

19:51

looking forward to go to Antigua to see

19:53

if there are any youngsters on the horizon,

19:57

you know, and that is one of the things that

19:59

bothers me. that our

20:01

game has fallen a

20:03

bit in Antigua and we

20:05

need you know investment so

20:08

that we can move the

20:10

cricket forward and

20:12

strong Antigua means

20:15

strong Westernies if

20:17

you check over the years. I think

20:20

it's important for us to host

20:22

this World Cup because obviously it's

20:25

gonna make a massive contribution to

20:27

a economy and

20:29

also showcase Antigua to the world. We're already

20:31

on the map as small as we are

20:33

but it's an opportunity for us to further

20:35

showcase what we have to offer to

20:38

visitors. We're a

20:40

Mag cricket nation. We

20:42

love cricket. We love

20:44

having international matches and having what

20:47

aid work matches in Antigua is gonna be

20:49

a blast. People are gonna look forward to

20:51

it. They're already looking forward to it. People

20:53

are already playing. It's gonna be like a

20:56

continuous party, music, dance, food

20:59

and then a rivalry. So yeah it's

21:01

gonna be exciting and a lot of

21:04

people, the hotel is gonna be full.

21:06

Already they're fully booked I understand. So

21:09

we're looking forward to having all the fans come

21:12

to Antigua and Barbina, of course the Caribbean because

21:14

I'm a Caribbean man. So

21:16

we're gonna have an exciting

21:18

event. I

21:20

should also mention actually because this year it was

21:22

announced that the CPL franchise will

21:25

return to Antigua as well. How

21:28

much of a boost is that to, I know

21:30

it's a different format of cricket in

21:33

terms of it's not test cricket etc but how much of

21:35

a boost is that to the island as well to be

21:37

able to have a franchise

21:39

back in Antigua? Well

21:41

we're hoping that it will take

21:43

off as it was

21:46

before. The Hawksbill.

21:49

Yeah the Hawksbill took off

21:51

the very first CPL

21:54

and we had some good crowds there

21:57

but things have gone downhill since

21:59

then. So we're hoping that with

22:01

the introduction of the Falcons that

22:04

we can bring things back up to respectability

22:08

Yeah, I think we were starved really

22:10

from CP cricket We watch Washington TV

22:12

every year and all the funds in

22:15

Antigua are really yearning targets So everyone

22:17

is now excited that we have the

22:19

franchise and now coming back to Antigua

22:21

I think it will benefit us in

22:23

many ways because They

22:25

will be involving like the four

22:27

Knights and they're going to be

22:30

participating in the cricket development through the island

22:32

So which will be a good thing for

22:34

overall development They're gonna invest and

22:36

they plan to be there for a very long time because

22:38

I believe they've got a very long Long

22:40

term contract with the government. So which means that they're

22:42

gonna be there for a very long time So I

22:44

think our cricket will benefit. Yes, it's T20 cricket, but

22:47

that's the way to go T20

22:49

cricket is a good Format

22:51

of the game to help promote the game to

22:53

to be sure to youngsters to show to the

22:55

business community I think I feel about You

22:59

know watching the game again, so we are very happy about

23:01

us and we think it's gonna do very well you

23:04

made reference of course to the to the four Knights and

23:07

If we link that into kind of wider

23:09

development within Antigua and if you want to

23:11

across the Caribbean books for specifically focusing on

23:14

Antigua What do you think I

23:16

mean investments the obvious answer? But

23:18

what do you think from the

23:21

heyday and the glory days of West Indies running

23:23

running world cricket in terms of on the field?

23:26

What would be if you could click your fingers?

23:29

Tomorrow, what would be the

23:31

thing that would change things overnight from

23:33

a developmental perspective two superstars?

23:37

okay, if we get two superstars

23:39

you could change everything because West

23:43

Indians and Antiguas in

23:45

particular likes winning Mm-hmm.

23:48

If you were following cricket in the 70s

23:51

80s and 90s you will see that

23:53

all the Antiguans Really

23:55

hold West Indies together.

23:58

And that is what we want to

24:00

see happen in the future? Richard?

24:05

Well, I have a slightly different perspective

24:07

on that. Cricket

24:11

is embedded in our genes, and

24:14

the talent will always be produced, will always be

24:16

there. So I think what we need to

24:18

do is to find a way to invest in the development

24:21

of our graphs with cricket, get

24:24

the youngsters playing, getting them to do the

24:26

right things, have proper coaching in

24:28

place, and have a system. The most important is to

24:30

have a system where you can work

24:33

from, say, from the maybe

24:35

9, 10,

24:38

whatever, all the way through, and nurture

24:40

them and bring them through. Of course, if you need

24:42

money, you need finances, but the most important is to

24:44

have that system. And if people see that you're doing

24:46

the right things and you have

24:48

something within place, they will support you.

24:51

Of course, we are a very small nation, but

24:53

it can be done. We were the best in the world for a number

24:56

of years, and we can be that way

24:58

again. But I don't think it

25:00

can be fast-tracked. We have to put the right things

25:02

in place, put systems in place in order to curb

25:05

these players and help

25:07

them develop, nurture them, and we can,

25:09

I'm sure, it will probably take maybe

25:11

10 years at least to really put that

25:14

to happen. That's why I see a lot of people

25:16

hoping that we can happen like that. But

25:18

I don't think it can. This

25:20

is Richie and Andy. Whenever

25:23

you sit in the kind of realm

25:25

of greatness, and I think it's not hyperbole

25:27

to call you great in the context of

25:29

cricket, it's always such an education to be

25:31

able to just sit and reason on

25:34

these things. Thank you so much for giving up some

25:36

of your time, and have a good evening tonight. Thank

25:38

you very much. Thank

25:41
