0:27

Recently, I asked Mint Mobile's legal team

0:29

if big wireless companies are allowed to

0:31

raise prices due to inflation. They said

0:33

yes. And then when I asked if

0:35

raising prices technically violates those onerous two-year

0:38

contracts, they said, what the are you

0:40

talking about, you insane Hollywood ass. So

0:42

to recap, we're cutting the price of Mint Unlimited from $30

1:13

1:27

from County cricket and Hampshire as well

1:29

as thoughts on another season where his

1:32

side are expected to challenge Sorry, who's

1:35

Jamie Overton has had a successful

1:37

winter and with his injury problems

1:39

Hopefully behind him he's targeting big

1:41

things this summer You will be hearing from

1:43

him as well as Durham's bas-de-la-da

1:47

Another with high expectations that for

1:49

the season ahead as well

1:51

as Hampshire's Keith Barker who talks cricket

1:53

and football Bringing memories of

1:55

his time as a professional footballer under

1:57

Graham soonest. No less. So let's start

2:00

Not there, I guarantee. It's an interview

2:02

that will bring a smile to your face. Keith,

2:04

thanks for joining us on the eve of the

2:06

2024 season. The weather

2:08

doesn't look like cricket weather, but how

2:10

are you feeling ahead of the new campaign? Not

2:12

too bad, yeah. Every year,

2:14

this time of year, lads are excited to get out

2:16

there and start the season off. We've

2:19

got to stick it out in that cold weather,

2:21

trying to get through our friendlies, but yeah, excited

2:23

every year, so looking forward to it. How

2:25

much have you gone so close to winning the championship in

2:27

the previous two seasons? How much of a drive is it

2:29

to finally get over the line and win it this

2:32

year? Oh, I think if we

2:34

look at it like that, sometimes you can take your arm

2:36

off the ball and worry about what everyone else is doing.

2:39

The fact that we have become a lot more competitive,

2:41

I think, is a huge bonus for us, and I

2:43

think that's the thing we've got to keep looking at,

2:45

is as long as we keep improving, we'll be there

2:47

and thereabouts. So yeah, we

2:50

do want to win it. This is

2:52

probably one of the strongest years,

2:54

I think, Division 1 will be, so no game's easy.

2:58

So we've just got to focus on what we do and try

3:00

and get that right. There's been a lot of talk about county

3:02

cricket in the past, but you mentioned there the strength

3:04

of depth in Division 1 itself this year.

3:06

How much are you looking forward to testing

3:08

yourself against the very best? Oh yeah, I

3:11

mean, for me, that's the great gauge of

3:13

being able to know where you're at as

3:15

a player. And

3:18

just a big learning curve. If you don't do too well,

3:20

you can look back at it and go, all right, they're

3:22

the best of the best. How did

3:25

I go? How did I operate? Was

3:28

it too much pressure? Was I feeling

3:30

a certain way? The good thing is you've got technology

3:32

where you can look back at it and analyse

3:34

things. So it's going to be good to test yourself,

3:36

and you always want to come out on top. So

3:39

obviously, that's from an individual point of view. As a group,

3:41

we just want to keep doing what we're doing and kind

3:44

of pants on those opportunities that we have. There's

3:47

one young bowler here at Hampshire that's excited quite

3:49

a lot in John Turner. Have

3:51

you seen his development over the last

3:53

year? How excited are you for it?

3:55

Yeah, John, JTE is an

3:57

Unbelievable bowler. I think he's got a lot to offer.

4:00

He's enthusiastic about his bowling is

4:02

works really hard. He's very fan

4:04

base. so many poles very quick

4:06

I'm i'm really excited form of

4:08

novices just a few neg also

4:10

is just getting through that are

4:12

that buys a learning curve Any

4:14

sell for him so I'm. I'm

4:17

sure he'll bounce back from it really well

4:19

and. Flips gonna be in

4:21

safe hands with him on. You

4:23

for that to spin Hampshire for cry while

4:26

you're at work ship for that. But not

4:28

many people might know that you had a

4:30

professional football career To tell us a bit

4:32

about your it Johnny the football I'm yes

4:34

though it have club or of the the

4:36

aged nine. I'm a man golf at a

4:38

contract at sixteen and I was there for

4:41

another four years after that. So twenty twenty

4:43

one I think. I'm on the

4:45

hots. a loan spell at Rochdale

4:47

and Secular Bridge which is bummer

4:49

of his feet have club at

4:51

the time I'm I'm an independent

4:53

St. Patrick's in Ireland for from

4:55

a few months I manage sluggishness

4:57

to go downhill from. there are

4:59

most at North which Victoria and

5:01

at that point things were looking

5:03

to gripe of kind of. Wait

5:06

and see if I'm gonna get contract. So

5:08

I think that twenty one and kind of

5:10

op's to know I'm the kind of done

5:12

with it. I'm and. Very. Lovely!

5:14

Got offered a trial after few games at

5:17

my local club have offered a trial at

5:19

work so against Hampshire and they all went

5:21

from a. It's it's a trick

5:23

alongside for herself have less of a

5:25

hobby that over there was just touched every

5:27

kind of catch that with mates or

5:29

maximise I used to play with. I'm

5:31

not play with for a while so

5:33

I'd go and play three to four guy's

5:36

ear of clue cricket just for a

5:38

loss I'm on. It was only when

5:40

I've finished. A

5:42

good friend of mine's sister was married to

5:44

a professional cricketer who played at my club

5:47

many years before that who are played with.

5:50

And he just said look if you do

5:52

well in Cook Pretty I could probably get

5:54

your trial at his club. so that is

5:56

by miss trying debate ago and I think

5:58

maybe some twenty a week. The first four

6:00

five games on I end up getting trial

6:02

from a different club so I was very

6:04

fortunate. Right place, right time and. Is

6:07

smoking, smoking the back door a little bit. You

6:10

he played England youth live than yeah.

6:12

My lungs are lots of Martin Imo

6:14

a lot younger so that was oh

6:16

god. I'm trusting now. this. Is

6:20

James Morrison if let him have

6:22

exploded Middlesborough throughout most of his

6:24

career. Martin know who played there

6:26

was David Nugent. He played at

6:28

Preston for quite a while. I'm

6:30

sorry get some a few. Good

6:32

place which was fortunate with about

6:34

letting them in the nineties and

6:36

twenty tommy two or three games.

6:39

When I was a good experience and

6:41

learn a lot from a previous manager

6:43

at the time. but then did you

6:45

ever get thirsty so train our way

6:47

of trying to first team see time

6:49

so. My Express the first of it's

6:52

just from train point of view was grabbed

6:54

soon as a much use. Of

6:58

miles bit when sunesis that opportunity to

7:00

by june from For now it. Showed

7:05

I will be over. I'm not other right

7:07

what he thinks her eyes enjoyed it. I

7:09

mean. Obviously.

7:11

From a cabbie Part of you are

7:13

right This first a minute of told.

7:15

My. Best training session even one of

7:18

the reserves. This training sessions the most

7:20

important if the training much most important

7:22

much you love ever played. Give it

7:24

your own a mass for the that

7:26

time The reserves I i sixteen just

7:28

and seventeen and then had the first

7:30

team session. ah was soon as was

7:33

There are tons to say that the

7:35

place feed him. Off

7:38

yeah they are safe to

7:40

say I remember that he

7:43

would. Add a

7:45

few issues, a few players. I

7:47

don't think Dwight Yoakam to with a Dwight

7:50

Yoakam a nickel of mine you're not A.the

7:52

not my name of it up the phone

7:54

and said say he would have time join

7:56

in a few sessions. our Up. A.

8:00

Like even overheat movie you the

8:02

watch the was football. have not

8:05

seen some such as Lucky coming

8:07

from himself. And

8:09

he was a was a big blow got

8:11

he was big strong must be guy. My.

8:15

And when he spoke plays listens though it was a.

8:17

Of the I was young, I was gonna listen anyway. But.

8:21

He led the lowdown and from

8:23

I remember, let's listen to it.

8:25

I'm a man. Marcuse came along

8:27

after after as soon as a

8:29

god, I'm. A bit

8:31

different, On

8:33

yeah it was. He asked

8:35

us to. I didn't really spend that

8:38

much time around the first the money

8:40

was the boat. seem like a good

8:42

money manager just got to do with

8:44

certain place differently seven bucks. Craig Bellamy

8:46

a man who was to the big

8:48

fish. And Robbie

8:51

Savage to. Saw.

8:53

Himself as the big fish. But

8:57

the I had some he goes in, there

9:00

are things he money's them well and got

9:02

the most out of them are mother with

9:04

us. So yeah, through different managers Gray experiences

9:06

it above to remove those experiences a rubber

9:08

the of how much did a healthy intense

9:10

spin around that professional fireman during for for

9:13

both sets of cricket board has a taste

9:15

of what it was not being a professional

9:17

athlete I'm from in Skokie to me back

9:19

then we'd put me back about twenty years

9:21

of fill up the. Creek was a little

9:23

bit behind in certain aspects both. Yes,

9:28

Musser professional point of view to surname

9:30

aspects. Boats.

9:33

The football tough for me, Up and

9:35

lox two hundred learn from mistakes in

9:37

in football and just kind of get

9:39

on with a cricket. I'm I'm just

9:41

kind of. you know up? Get. From

9:44

up all the point of view bobbing hurts. Get

9:46

on with it. Do with it. Sir

9:49

Football in Vomit as as. those

9:51

millions of people who want to play football i

9:53

do anything supply i'm a normal a was it

9:55

was kind of if you don't do it will

9:57

guess what else in that will so

10:00

you either fix up or you're out. So you have to learn

10:02

quick from that. And that's, I was fortunate to

10:04

have another shot in cricket to learn

10:06

from mistakes and try and not make the same mistakes again. We're

10:09

in a dominated world of sport science now in

10:11

2024. Do

10:13

you get frustrated probably as a player when they go,

10:16

oh, you're in the red zone, you probably need some

10:18

rest. When you've come up through that upbringing of, there's

10:20

nothing wrong with me, I'm just gonna play. Yeah,

10:22

I think that's an interesting one, that

10:25

really. Because there are certain ways, I

10:27

think they've made a huge difference. But

10:32

what I think is going

10:34

to happen, if we're not

10:36

careful from a bowling perspective, is

10:39

that you kind of end

10:41

up nurturing really soft bowlers that

10:43

any sort of niggle, oh, I can't bowl, and

10:45

oh, I feel a bit sore. And

10:49

then you're not gonna get bowlers who actually, when

10:51

it gets tough, can do it. So

10:53

I think there's, you've gotta be careful. I think sometimes

10:55

you've gotta be in that red zone. It's

10:57

almost like a car engine, if you'd say

10:59

it's wrong, but sometimes you've gotta open up your engine

11:02

a little bit to keep that engine clean and strong.

11:04

If you don't, it clogs up and then things start

11:06

going wrong. So I think there's leeway

11:09

for both directions, but I think

11:11

sometimes young bowlers especially, have

11:13

gotta learn to understand their body and when

11:15

they're really sore and when

11:17

they're potentially gonna get injured to when actually it's just

11:19

a bit of a niggle and they can crack on.

11:22

Do you think that gets hampered by, obviously a

11:25

lot of people nowadays only play 220, they're

11:28

the only bowl for is it over at a time. And

11:30

then when they step back into first last cricket, it's like

11:32

a bit of a baptism

11:34

of fire, I guess. You've gone from

11:36

bowling chalk spells to bowling. Yeah, I

11:38

mean, yeah, I think you're right. I

11:40

think obviously when I was playing more

11:42

T20 on all formats because

11:45

the fixtures were a little bit in and out of, so

11:47

you could be Red Bull, one game, and then it'd become

11:49

a Friday night and you'd be T20. You

11:52

kinda never lost your four day fitness, but because now

11:54

it's in blocks, which I do think is better, I

11:56

think it can be harder for lads that just been doing a

11:59

lot of T20 and then. and all of a sudden

12:01

there's a big leap back to trying to

12:03

bowl a 6-7-8 over spell. So

12:05

yeah, that's where

12:07

your painkillers and caffeine pills come

12:09

into it. So yeah, I don't

12:11

think it's easy and I think that's where there's got to be a

12:14

balance and I think from a bowlers point of view

12:16

you've got to almost learn to

12:18

operate as in four day cricket about 80 percent.

12:20

It's quite hard to be flat out in everything

12:22

because the amount of fictions we play you will

12:25

burn out. And to turn

12:27

back to your football loon career, you said you

12:29

were at Rochdale in the football league then went

12:31

to Northridge, so that was a national league sort

12:33

of standard? Yes. I

12:35

support a team in the national league, I support Old Shuttown

12:38

and I see a lot of players that float

12:40

in and around the league on one-year deals

12:43

and so it must be quite hard to

12:45

sustain if you're a professional thinking ahead to

12:47

your future. So how glad are you that

12:50

you quit while you're ahead in terms of

12:52

that regard in terms of football and now

12:54

had the career you've had in cricket? Yeah,

12:56

I mean it's a gamble

12:59

even like county stuff as well. You

13:02

can end up being on one-year deals and

13:04

you're kind of just helping things

13:06

go well for you. It's

13:08

not easy, especially in football because there's not many

13:11

people that can come out of nowhere. It's

13:14

not easy and to any extent, there's

13:16

no fix for it. You've just got to almost try and

13:19

tread water and survive it and keep

13:21

working hard and hope that things just happen

13:23

for you. Sometimes it can be right

13:25

opportunity, right time and you've just got to fight it

13:27

out and hope for the best. Brilliant

13:31

stuff from Keith who is speaking to

13:33

TalkSport's Scott Taylor. The clips about Soudes,

13:35

well they might get an airing when the great man

13:37

is next in the chair with Jim White and Simon

13:40

Jordan. Well stay with Hampshire as

13:42

Liam Dawson, who's also had an eventful

13:44

time with things recently, also caught up

13:46

with Scott Taylor. So Liam thanks for joining

13:48

us, this is a head of the 2020-24 season.

13:50

I think it's your 17th season

13:53

as a pro. How excited are you for this season?

13:56

Yeah this time is always really exciting, not just for

13:58

me but for the whole group and the whole whole

14:00

players that are getting ready for this season.

14:03

Yeah, pre-season is always good fun and I'm

14:05

sure everybody involved is looking forward to start

14:07

the summer next week. And Hampshire's obviously gone

14:09

so close to winning the county championship over

14:11

the last few seasons. How motivated are you

14:13

to finally get over the line and win

14:15

it this year? Without doubt it's

14:18

a huge motivation for that, not

14:20

just for me but I'll see everyone in that change room, something

14:22

that we haven't done as a group and you know the only

14:24

thing we haven't done as a group now at this club. So

14:27

yeah, everyone's really motivated. You know,

14:29

I think if

14:32

we're honest we've been close over the last few years but I think

14:34

if we can rectify a few things,

14:36

you know a few of those losses if we can

14:38

turn those into draws, that'll

14:41

give us a huge chance in competing about you

14:43

know being top of the league. And arguably this

14:45

season in the championship with Durham coming up and

14:47

the way they're playing under Ryan Campbell it's going

14:49

to be tougher than ever. How do you assess

14:52

the strength I guess of Division 1? Yeah I

14:55

said earlier I think it's probably going to be the

14:57

strongest that it has been maybe for a number of

14:59

years obviously with Durham coming up. They

15:01

obviously dominated Division 2 last year and they

15:04

play an attacking style of cricket. As

15:06

I said there's a lot of good teams in the division, Essex

15:08

are always good you know Surrey

15:10

are fantastic, Langstra are going to be good

15:12

this year with Nathan Lyon. So yeah there's

15:15

some really good teams out there but that's

15:17

also a really good test for all the

15:19

teams involved. Do you feel like it's sort

15:21

of now or never really with Hampshire because

15:23

you've got the likes of Keith who's approached

15:25

38, Carl's getting older, Mohammed's in his 30s

15:27

as well. Do you feel like it's like yeah now or

15:29

never the Hampshire to win the title this year? Yeah

15:32

probably we've got an

15:34

older group definitely especially with our Seamers obviously

15:38

towards the end of their careers now but

15:40

they're obviously still quality bowlers but yeah we know

15:42

that if we play good cricket we can compete

15:45

with anyone on their day and yeah we are

15:47

desperate to win it and as I said if

15:49

we can turn a few

15:51

of those losses into draws

15:53

that's going to help massively because if you look

15:55

at the table over the last few years we

15:58

win probably more games than any other game. anyone

16:00

in the division, we just lose a couple more. And

16:03

how much has the boost been signing Alior

16:05

and obviously Tom Press, another year older, another

16:07

year experienced, so that boosts the batting I

16:09

guess? Without doubt, I've not seen

16:12

much of Alior, obviously a couple of pre-season games

16:14

this year, he looks a really good player, looks

16:16

a player that we sort of needed

16:19

in our top order, somebody who can sort

16:22

of put pressure a little bit back on the bowlers

16:25

and he's done that in pre-season so far, he's played

16:27

really well and yeah, Tom Press, he's scored a fantastic

16:29

hundred last year at Chelmsford on a

16:31

real tough wicket against the quality bowlers, Simon Harmer,

16:34

so yeah, obviously another year older

16:36

for Tom and don't want to put any

16:38

pressure on him, just want him to go out

16:40

and enjoy his cricket and hopefully he performs. And

16:43

how do you back up your 20-23,

16:45

49 wickets, over 800 runs, a stellar

16:47

season for you? Yeah,

16:49

it's probably a season that I really

16:52

think might not happen again, yeah, last year

16:54

was a really

16:56

pleasing season, you know, in

16:58

all formats really, but to

17:00

back that up again, obviously I'm desperate to do

17:03

that, but very realistic how sport works, to

17:05

do that again is going to be extremely tough,

17:08

but I'll certainly be trying to do

17:11

that, but also very realistic that that doesn't happen

17:13

very often. Can we clear

17:15

up the whole England in India situation,

17:18

was there ever any contact from Rob

17:20

or the ECB when Jack Leach went

17:22

down and potentially naming replacements or potentially

17:24

being named in the squad at all?

17:28

Yeah, there was, I had a phone call from

17:30

Luke Wright just saying that they weren't going to

17:32

call anyone up and would I be prepared to

17:34

go if Tom Hartley was

17:36

to get injured? And

17:39

that was something I would have to have thought about, but

17:41

as I said before, I'm very realistic where I

17:43

stand with England now. There's a

17:46

few things that's gone on over the last

17:48

year that doesn't really need

17:50

to be spoke about, but yeah, I'm realistic where I

17:52

am. playing

18:00

cricket and being happy in the

18:02

years that you got left your career? Without

18:04

doubt, yeah. That's exactly what

18:06

I did last summer. I didn't worry about anything. Went

18:09

out there and tried to enjoy my cricket.

18:12

Very realistic that I don't have long left

18:14

in the game. The age I'm at, I'm sort of, wouldn't

18:18

say towards the back end of my career

18:20

but obviously I'm 34 now so, you know,

18:22

time sort of isn't running out but it's

18:24

towards the later years of your career. But

18:27

yeah, for me it's all about enjoying it.

18:29

Trying to perform with whatever

18:31

team I play for and given

18:34

100% every time I go on the field. You

18:36

play a lot of franchise cricket. You played in PSO.

18:39

You played in the SA20 this winter so

18:42

people could say you'd probably just rely on franchise

18:44

cricket so, by Hampshire, why does it mean so

18:46

much to you to keep coming back to here

18:48

as your home and playing for this county? Well

18:51

I love Play of Hampshire. It's a club I've been

18:53

at since I was 10 years of age. You know,

18:55

I've came through the age groups, luckily came

18:58

through the academy and, you know, they've been very,

19:00

very good to me over the years and there's

19:02

a number of players in that changing. I see James Vince,

19:05

Chris Wood have been there the

19:07

same time as well and it means a hell of a

19:09

lot for us to play for this club. You know, it's

19:11

your home as well. You care

19:13

so much about the place. You want to win trophies and

19:15

yeah, it means a hell of a lot. How

19:17

hard is it to find that balance of

19:20

playing over the winter in these tournaments but

19:22

also looking after yourself for when

19:24

you come back and play the new season? It's

19:26

all well and good feeling fresh now but come

19:28

July you might be knackered because you had a

19:31

whole winter playing cricket. How hard is that balance

19:33

for you? Yeah,

19:35

it can be. I think you've, you know,

19:37

it doesn't happen. You know, for me I feel very

19:39

lucky to get the opportunity to play in the winter

19:42

in these franchise tournaments so, you know,

19:44

I've got to take those opportunities when they come but,

19:46

you know, someone like James Vince who will

19:48

probably get picked up in most tournaments, you know,

19:50

for him managing his schedule and his workloads is

19:52

probably something that players of that quality

19:55

are going to have to look at going forward because,

19:57

you know, you can play sort of 11 months of the year now. But.

20:01

Yeah, I may not senate as completely an individual's.

20:05

Choice of what they want to do and how many crit how much

20:07

for your they want to plane. When. They do come

20:09

back to the council that all that domestic same

20:11

are they going to be fresh enough perform for

20:13

that? Some of it's just a couple more this

20:15

as well as the question about the shadows of

20:18

the for one above your pay grade. But what's

20:20

it like is a former player. Playing.

20:22

In this in the season where you got

20:24

for four months combine in circles six months.

20:27

Or to be honest, have. Done.

20:30

It for a long time now so I'm just

20:32

used to Duna. It's is Paul the it's I

20:34

understand. That. There's no ideal scenario.

20:36

how you what gives more format gives you

20:38

know when you play certain things in a

20:41

seasonal thing. Worse. A Very

20:43

lucky that we. We. Gets play lol Cricket

20:45

is why which is which is a very

20:47

good thing as well. Mostly the you don't

20:50

want players being so as. Smoked

20:53

here and there. that's how the that's how the

20:55

system is is a minute but that's why. Also

20:58

you have a squad as well. say he to

21:00

be clever of how you use I play as

21:02

but for me it's something I've done for number

21:04

years now. It's something you really get within. Data.

21:07

Would have a choice of Iraq is nothing seems

21:09

to times and just and destroying the you've won

21:12

as a twenty one that counts the blast. Were.

21:14

Was winning the championship rank among

21:17

soccer. It. Yeah. Without down

21:19

that's that's exact or so. That's my biggest

21:21

drive an hour sir is so when that

21:23

terrorism saves us anything of not not done

21:25

a mockery. been very lucky after when the

21:28

number trophies but to get that guy jumps

21:30

on would be something that be a real

21:32

real special achievement today because you play the

21:34

fourteen games. As

21:37

Scylla hardware that goes into it but. This.

21:39

Of the no Easy today. So yeah,

21:41

desperate today. that hope zoc into it.

21:44

Before and I'm occur as a few others not

21:46

changing one's today. But

21:48

the a weekend or is trying control and play

21:51

For. As

22:30

a person with a very deep voice,

22:32

I'm hired all the time for advertising

22:35

campaigns. But a deep voice doesn't sell

22:37

B2B, and advertising on the wrong platform

22:39

doesn't sell B2B either. That's

22:41

why if you're a B2B marketer,

22:43

you should use LinkedIn ads. LinkedIn

22:45

has the targeting capabilities to help

22:48

you reach the world's largest professional

22:50

audience. That's right, over 70 million

22:52

decision makers all in one place.

22:54

All the bigwigs, then mediumwigs. Also

22:56

smallwigs who are on the path

22:58

to becoming bigwigs. Okay, that's

23:00

enough about wigs. LinkedIn ads allows you to

23:02

focus on getting your B2B message to

23:05

the right people. So, does that mean you

23:07

should use ads on LinkedIn instead of hiring

23:09

23:12

the world? Yes, yes it does.

23:14

I sides com navi accounting for kids so

24:19

24:23

24:25

24:27

but both with us and as much as

24:29

we have a much more motivation is that

24:32

24:34

with a stress fracture and missing a large

24:36

chunk of not some artists often know must

24:38

24:41

As the sole past palm positive love the

24:43

24:45

just one of those when you when you

24:47

24:49

he can. Martha's must was has prosthesis china

24:51

24:54

are no injuries going to happen and so

24:56

that's that's my so relaxation time and ton

of recovering recoup from Nasa the have looking

25:00

for this is going on start from the

25:02

first game and the a thing as process

25:04

has served success with myself. And just on

25:07

the big news last week the came out

25:09

about Alec Stewart rid of spoke. To only

25:11

use of the known him since yep, he was

25:13

seven years old. Weather as someone who's recently come

25:15

into the club, the sum up what Alex dumfries

25:18

25:20

25:22

25:29

not ready to buy his raw different right front

25:31

25:34

some was confidence and when I first moved there

25:36

was there was one of the key com deciding

25:38

factors that he was going to be in charge

25:40

of. Thing is a cells knows everything. I was

25:42

nine years ago and on those kind of us

25:45

now everyone. Is just

25:47

realizing this also going to be disappointed? Lose

25:49

and bus said on Sunday. So bizarre. This

25:51

is. Says time and has a we

25:53

can gonna bang for him and time.

25:55

Answer answering and how much to flourish

26:10

26:12

26:14

mean you have to play every game with.

26:16

When Flimsy got the riches that we can

26:18

rotate the Scots com and twenty five on

26:21

fresh. was is for them

26:23

by the main reasons why the last couple as we

26:25

have one at discuss. Nice. Also

26:27

got the the luxury the we haven't haven't

26:29

five or six same as and we can

26:31

rotate through such as Nice to have by

26:33

yes it's You know that if he don't

26:35

have an ascetic right there you go someone

26:37

else I can send a hand often have

26:39

a good day and associates rotate through through.

26:41

Ah that sucks. Yes a great great a

26:43

pause and Yoshi learning from as one of

26:45

the same time I was the same so

26:47

I'm astonished says it's he says he comes

26:49

home Put any that for you to stay

26:51

fresh and how hard is it find that

26:53

balance of staying fresh to keep? Had a

26:56

a long winter. With Bbl and I'll teach

26:58

when Csr, you might feel fresh now,

27:00

but come July might catch up on

27:02

you. So how important is it to

27:04

get that balance right? Yes, hardest tricky

27:06

hum assist tonic. He doing the right

27:08

things whether that's eating. Wow, I'm. Getting.

27:11

Enough sleep and recovery hum assists on

27:13

a tornado the right things like early

27:15

on as soon as possible. And

27:19

was that doesn't mean you have a couple games way to

27:21

so it's held and a not playing. As

27:23

a long season and the you got on

27:25

be safe and how season and chong countries

27:27

now and I'm not really my philosophy it

27:29

says or time five again available for sites

27:31

or will have to just how much as

27:34

much return. In

27:37

up on a mass amount overs anyway sets

27:39

as just China do the right things. And net

27:42

China stance of everything really. Talking.

27:44

About know bolland amount and huge amount of

27:46

overs. he played a lot he twenty cricket

27:48

in the winter Bbl team at a tournament

27:50

you stop the mvp in hundred last year

27:52

as a t twenty woke up in June

27:54

is that one I'll not a you ambitious

27:56

to get in that England Saudia one eyes

27:58

on that hum. He never

28:01

knows so know how close you are fingers

28:03

costs of silicon hi close but of the

28:05

skokie they're wondering if it does come up

28:07

and do guess like that then then I'll

28:09

be over the moon and stuff but with

28:11

it it into last week to saying on

28:14

my aim at the time finding them fix

28:16

and twenty twenty eight. So if that's all

28:18

this fossil progresses hong get to was us

28:20

days than than us does does the first

28:22

main thing by yeah most a sauna folks

28:24

someone doing and of the arctic cause excess

28:27

also twelve months and why both a twenty

28:29

cricket com hundred. Cricket so it's yeah to

28:31

Sontag, that's than a second time. Push myself even

28:33

further notice with the Buddha's Rosewood about how much

28:35

if you work on on your batting because to

28:37

become that around them up off of it or

28:40

more was on the busing. I have a volunteer

28:42

on a sprawling to solve a thing is is

28:44

so. I. Suffered answered

28:46

the last year playing in the in

28:48

the in the blast and not holding

28:50

anything, just plans about the souls in

28:52

so see what's going on. Solve

28:55

within his own open lens. Com thinks I'm hungry

28:57

bony soldiers get carried away I his or her

28:59

Everything happens to put the was when the failed

29:02

you. if it was a you got. A

29:04

says he goes on forever sometimes they ask

29:06

yourself advised as solve how people go about

29:08

him what's hard on, what's what's easy the

29:11

hands of a lot So I'm saying that

29:13

self help me going forward the bowling but

29:15

the A batting was a Don Carlo watch

29:17

on a. Homeless. Or com

29:19

like a finisher. So row of that means

29:21

China gets upset. At the final score

29:24

on I guess of the line in a in

29:26

a in a crunch game so as not norway

29:28

going to watch com but the account of for

29:30

myself in a where happens more often than not

29:33

and how difficult was it for you he had

29:35

a good Bbl hiding the aisle t twenty zone

29:37

and after which often appear so with an agreement

29:39

missouri with how's that for years that frustrating says

29:42

wanted to take on what you look at is

29:44

a bigger picture the ebay for strength. As

29:47

well as things ahead of you know, niggles

29:49

and a few injuries and sorry one overly

29:51

happy com So yeah was a bit frustrating

29:53

but. Kind. of in the long

29:56

run is not necessary to the worst thing for

29:58

the nice thing about five thousand and five They've

30:00

been very good to me, they've obviously

30:02

picked me up and since then they've been

30:05

very very very complimentary so it's just a

30:07

bit disappointing but these things happen and just

30:10

trying to get fresh for the summer here now and trying to

30:12

push my case going forward. Did Alex

30:14

smoke to me last year and one of

30:16

the things you mentioned he could see down

30:18

the line franchise cricketers becoming a bit like

30:20

tennis players really where they go from franchise

30:23

to franchise but they've not got a base where

30:25

you have a base here at Surrey. Did you

30:28

see that potentially happening where they have to bring

30:30

their own coaches because at the moment you've got

30:32

an agreement with Surrey where you didn't play PSL

30:34

but maybe 5-10 years down

30:36

the line where you

30:38

want to cash in before you retire that could be an

30:41

option. Yeah I think so, I think potentially

30:43

it could happen in the future. I think there's

30:45

a few guys starting to just play for each sort

30:47

of franchise around the world like

30:50

San on a Rhine just plays for the Knight Rider

30:52

sort of franchise and stuff like that so

30:54

it's going to happen more often than not. Some

30:59

guys may go down that route I think at the

31:01

moment I'm sort of happy with still

31:03

playing four-day cricket I think it's very beneficial

31:06

to get your basics and stuff in place and

31:08

then you sort of take T20 cricket from there.

31:11

I think I saw something about Mark Butcher said the

31:14

other day actually your

31:16

four-day cricket or your basics cricket is

31:18

the foundation for everything and you

31:22

can just sort of express yourself from

31:24

that situation from four-day cricket

31:26

so yeah for me

31:28

at the moment it's just trying to keep doing that and then whatever

31:31

comes to me comes to me but yeah potentially in the future

31:33

there might be something that I look to go down because obviously

31:36

bodies as a fast forward it's

31:38

not the longest career so you've got to try and

31:40

earn the money as much as you can so and

31:42

that means I've got to just play white cricket I

31:44

just play white cricket but yeah at the moment I'm

31:46

focusing on just trying to play as much cricket as

31:48

I can and that means four-day cricket and trying to

31:50

get back in a test site. So much you're looking

31:52

forward to playing in this championship this year given the

31:54

quality really of the other teams Lancashire, Durham

31:56

have done well under Ryan Campbell you've got Essex, Hampshire

31:58

always knocking on the ground. as well. So that's

32:01

at least five teams, well four plus yourself going

32:03

for the title. It's going to be really competitive.

32:05

Yeah, it's going to be really competitive. I think

32:08

it's competitive every year that the standard is

32:11

really high, especially with some very good overseas

32:13

players coming in. It's not

32:15

going to be easy. We've got to try and push

32:19

ourselves even further than the last couple of years because

32:21

the other side, they're coming at us and it's

32:24

always harder for teams when you're at the top

32:26

because people are always trying to peck you and

32:28

take you down a notch. So we've got to

32:30

put our best foot forward and try and start

32:32

the season of front foot with Lanks next week

32:34

and try and take it from there game by

32:37

game. You had that

32:39

one test with England where you did so well with the bat

32:41

as well. Are you targeting a

32:43

return to that side and also on

32:45

the horizon there's no denying, there's an

32:47

away, Ash, you did well in Australia.

32:49

Is that something perhaps that's on your

32:51

mind? Absolutely, I think while I'm still

32:53

playing all four formats is to try and get back

32:55

in the test side and

32:58

if it does happen, it happens. If it doesn't then

33:00

so be it. But I think it's

33:02

just trying to keep doing what I'm doing and if it

33:04

happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't. It's just really

33:07

just trying to keep what I'm doing and yeah, that's all

33:09

it is really. And

33:11

for anyone thinking that there is a

33:13

sudden bias to the following on podcast,

33:15

well think again because Jack Cunningham was

33:17

at Durham's press day last week and

33:19

he caught up with Baz Delader. I'm

33:21

here with Durham's Baz Delader and the

33:23

Netherlands Baz Delader. So Baz, how was

33:25

life in the North East East East?

33:29

Very good. Obviously

33:32

the cricket side of things is it's

33:34

amazing to be at

33:36

such a welcoming club

33:39

as Durham and such a

33:41

high performing club as Durham. You know

33:44

last year was amazing for us and

33:48

I'm really excited for next year in terms

33:50

of cricket and then next

33:53

to cricket obviously life outside of

33:55

cricket has been good as well. Living

33:58

with some of my teammates has been good. and

34:01

obviously the Northeast has a lot of

34:04

natural beauty to offer so I've been

34:06

trying to explore inwards

34:08

towards the Lake District and obviously I

34:11

tried to have a couple of runs in the winter next to the

34:14

beaches which was very nice. Oh lovely, time out

34:16

and all that. Lovely. Exactly. Have you, have you

34:18

been keeping yourself fit for the offseason? Have you

34:20

got any new training techniques or any new like

34:23

diets? Not necessarily, no.

34:25

I've spent quite a bit of time away

34:27

in the winter which I was fortunate enough

34:29

to spend a lot of time in the summer

34:32

but also keep keep training a lot.

34:35

Probably less technical work than I would have done

34:37

in the indoor school but you

34:40

know there's always always small things I think that

34:42

that we as a cricketer try and work

34:44

on. You know you're never going

34:47

to change your whole action or reinvent your

34:49

batting it's just a little one

34:51

percent that you can get

34:53

somewhere so it's been good

34:55

fun trying to yeah look at what

34:58

I'm happy with and what I think can

35:00

be better you know working together with Graham

35:02

onions and as a bowling coach

35:04

and then James Hildrich is the betting coach. Brilliant,

35:06

obviously you were key player at the World Cup

35:09

for the Netherlands I mean can you describe what a World

35:11

Cup in India was like? It was nuts just

35:15

six weeks of pure crazy craziness

35:17

and passion for cricket which was

35:21

awesome to experience coming from a country

35:23

where there's only 5,000 cricketers

35:26

probably not many more that know what

35:29

cricket is so it was it was

35:31

just amazing for us to experience and

35:35

yeah I think you know in the

35:37

end we we did well but

35:39

also we came back from that trip

35:41

and thought you know we could

35:43

have won at least one or two more

35:46

games if we if we had played well

35:49

in every game and so it was it

35:51

was a really fun trip

35:53

really exciting trip for us but

35:55

also a little bit disappointing

35:58

in the end. Not fair I mean you ended the the

36:00

16, what gets the main how did you reflect on the

36:02

World Cup personally? Yeah I

36:04

really enjoyed it, you know it

36:08

is a step up from the level of

36:10

cricket we normally play, you know

36:12

we don't get the opportunity to play

36:14

against full members every every season or

36:16

every year so for me it was

36:20

a real eye-opening away

36:23

to see where I

36:25

am now in comparison to the the world's best

36:27

and what I need

36:30

to be doing to get to that

36:32

level so you know a really good

36:34

experience and hopefully helps

36:37

me with my learning in the next couple of years.

36:39

Yeah of course I mean obviously you can't push on

36:41

it anyway but I mean from a team perspective you're

36:43

actually quite disappointed in the end when you came back.

36:46

Yeah obviously still

36:49

happy with the results that

36:51

we did get we just felt that

36:54

there was more there and we

36:56

could have grabbed the opportunities that

36:58

were there we just didn't and

37:00

that I think that was the disappointing bit. I

37:04

mean how was the team treated by the public when

37:06

you overturned because as you said only 5,000 critters in

37:08

the Netherlands it's obviously a sport that's growing so how

37:10

was the public reaction? There was actually quite a quite

37:13

a bit of media attention which was very

37:16

cool you know there's a

37:18

couple of Dutch TV stations

37:21

new stations that they reported on the World Cup

37:23

which was amazing and

37:26

I think when we

37:28

got back not necessarily a massive a

37:32

massive reception for us but the attention we

37:34

got during the tournament and the support we

37:37

got was was

37:40

something that was that was really nice. That's

37:42

great I mean looking ahead T20 World Cup

37:44

of course how are you feeling about

37:46

another big international tournament and another chance to impress? Yeah

37:49

like you said it's a chance to

37:51

impress for us you know having done

37:53

well the last T20 World Cup

37:55

and obviously having been at the 50 year World

37:57

Cup I think for us it's You

38:00

know it's gonna be the question can we reproduce

38:02

what we have done and can we show

38:04

that we have gotten better in that time? And

38:07

I think that's the focus has been on going

38:11

from good to great So

38:14

how do we do that? What does that look

38:16

like individually and what does it look like as

38:18

a team? Yeah,

38:21

I'm really excited to be able to

38:23

show What we can

38:25

do on the on the biggest stage again brilliant I

38:28

mean are you optimistic about cricket in Netherlands continually

38:30

grow now based on Continually being

38:32

in tournaments and more exposure this

38:35

hopefully You

38:37

know that the thing with cricket in Netherlands is

38:39

that it's not well known so That

38:42

the problem starts there and I think with

38:44

the attention we got during the World Cups

38:46

and like you said playing playing more tournaments

38:50

It definitely helps with the attention and more people start

38:52

to get to know What it

38:54

is and what it is about and Yeah,

38:57

hopefully it starts growing again. I

39:00

think there's been a slight staggering

39:03

trend So

39:05

if we if we can get that upwards again, then

39:07

that would be phenomenal and then looking at Durham Everyone

39:10

must be feeling very confident ahead of the new country.

39:12

Yeah, I think you know we

39:15

should be confident after last year's and that's

39:17

that's how we want to tackle the games

39:19

in this county championship and We're

39:22

obviously gonna face Quality

39:24

players and probably better opposition that we did

39:27

last year So the challenge for us is

39:30

to stay confident to

39:32

play the same way and and to try and do

39:34

that for for longer and Yeah

39:36

for more periods in the game and we

39:38

should be set what we made it in new editions Obviously

39:42

I played a lot with Colin Ackerman already Kellan

39:46

Parkinson is great around the dressing room and

39:48

he's a he's a quality cricketer But

39:51

yeah, both of them coming

39:53

in is Is

39:57

yeah a great add to our

39:59

to our squad and then you've always got

40:01

the rookies that come in alongside

40:03

that, which have been

40:05

really exciting, especially in Zimbabwe, but

40:08

also seeing them in the Internet

40:10

here. And then Scott Ballin as well. Oh yeah.

40:14

I almost forgot about him, but I'm sure after the

40:17

first couple of games, I'll definitely

40:19

know who he is. And then

40:21

finally, I mean, Sublime here for

40:23

Durham 2023, what are the aims for the season?

40:27

Well, I think

40:29

we're in it to win it. I

40:32

mean, it would be silly

40:34

to not

40:36

have that goal. And

40:39

if it turns out differently throughout the season,

40:43

we can obviously adjust our goals. But I

40:46

think we should be trying to

40:48

win every game. And

40:52

hopefully that leads us to trophies. Big thanks

40:55

to Baz, to Keith, to Liam and Jamie,

40:57
