hear from me for me
2:02
to like speak outwardly to them like a bulletin
2:04
and for them to know that I'm fine but
2:06
no exhortation of this two-way communication. I
2:09
said, whoa, like what happened
2:11
to you that this would need to be the length
2:13
that you're taking? So there is a difference
2:15
between burnout and stress. Off the top, stress
2:18
is more like a sense of urgency, physical
2:20
toiling, like you know, my head is scrambled,
2:22
like I'm making mistakes, I'm clumsy, that stress.
2:26
However, there is like lost motivation,
2:28
feeling helpless, down, etc.
2:31
The difference between burnout and stress, when you put
2:33
them side by side, a little diagram, you might do that in
2:35
your header on a paper, you realise
2:37
that for the most part when we say that high school
2:39
is stressful, I can see that, right? You
2:42
get over-engaged, you want to do a lot of everything
2:44
at once, it's creeping up on you,
2:46
you feel really reactive or over-reactive when your
2:48
parents are like, why haven't you studied with teachers? Like stop talking,
2:50
you like, you arc up, you are animated
2:53
in your frustration. There's a sense
2:55
of urgency, what am I going to do when I finish? No
2:57
one's telling me, should I go to the counsellor, what's happening?
3:01
Then you might have anxiety
3:03
about it, but all of this is kind of like, it's
3:06
a response to your environment, an obviously
3:08
stressful situation, you're responding accordingly.
3:11
However, burnout is being in
3:13
these obviously stressful environments
3:15
or not and disengaging. It's
3:18
like the apathetic response. What
3:21
would have inspired you previously
3:23
to engage in conflict
3:25
or to sort it out or to be proactive,
3:27
you no longer do that, you're disengaged. Also
3:30
you become quite stifled and distant in
3:33
your emotional expression, so instead of being the person
3:35
who's like, I'm going to do something about it, you
3:37
don't do anything about it. You can
3:39
feel helpless, you can lose your motivation, which
3:41
can lead you to feeling depressed and
3:44
it becomes emotionally toiling. So
3:46
stress, physically toiling, a lot
3:48
reactive, burnout, emotionally toiling,
3:51
introverted, introspective, like
3:53
in a cave vibes. In a
3:56
cave. Oh my word, do you
3:58
think you've experienced it? Absolutely. I'm
4:00
always burnt out. But there are times
4:02
when I feel like, because I'm not really good at
4:04
like checking my mind-body connection, I can't
4:07
figure out where it starts and end. Kind of like a dream,
4:09
you just end up in one and you're like, oh, that's so, whoa. And
4:12
then you wake up and you're like, was that even real?
4:15
Because today I feel fine. So what's the deal? What
4:18
I was trying to figure out is like, is burnout
4:20
on the same spectrum as stress? Like
4:23
you, like a lot of stress leads to
4:25
burnout. How does that work? And then I found
4:27
out that burnout isn't necessarily separate
4:30
from stress, but on like the furthest
4:32
end of the stress continuum. So like
4:34
it's fine and normal to experience stress
4:37
regularly, a bit of anxiety that is responding
4:40
to a scenario. But the repetition
4:43
of that and the intensity of
4:45
that leads you to a far-right place
4:47
that can cause burnout if you
4:49
don't like, I don't know, resolve it. And
4:52
then it says, when chronic stress
4:54
leads you to experience more intense and severe
4:57
symptoms of stress, it
4:59
appears your ability to function and that's
5:01
called burnout. It's like when your ability
5:04
to function isn't paired, you cannot do the things you
5:06
used to do with varying levels
5:08
of ease anymore because of the level
5:10
of stress you're under. Now I look
5:12
back and I think about parents and you observe
5:15
them being so stressed, they can't do anything.
5:17
You're like, oh, that's wrong. Like what's happening?
5:20
You know, when you I remember like on
5:22
one occasion, if I didn't take like the chicken out of the freezer
5:24
and then when my mum didn't get mad, I was like, oh, that's
5:27
strange. What's that about? Burned out. And
5:31
I found out from this article,
5:34
it was more like a research paper, but
5:36
it was saying with the three main features of burnout
5:39
are overwhelming exhaustion, cynicism
5:41
and detachment from the task and a sense
5:44
of not being productive, accomplished or effective.
5:47
And that's going to take you one to three years to recover.
