This week we discuss One Day at a Time, season 1-4.

It’s a series on Netflix and PopTV that follows the Alverez’s; a Cuban-American family, as they navigate their daily life and the problems that get thrown their way.

The show is admirable as it tackles issues such as PTSD, depression, rape culture, queer issues, consent, addiction and many other taboo topics that other shows shy away from. It was significant to both our lives as it was the first time we has seen a queer character of similar ages to us.

As Becca said this show makes people feel seen, it makes people feel heard. There’s a character for everyone, there’s a relationship that reminds everyone of a relationship in their own life. It's really personal and realistic which makes for an amazing watch, if you need a laugh... or a cry. For differing reasons we both connected to Elena through being gay and standing up for what she believes in, as well as the relationship with her parents, perhaps, the most hard hitting of the show.

We discuss family taking time to become comfortable with coming out. After all, in the words of Lydia, who are we to judge? Who are we to against the Pope and God? as well as the human nature of focussing on the negatives, focussing on who doesn't accept us rather than who does. And keeping the memory of loved ones alive, through the character of Lydia's late husband, Berto.
