This week we’re recapping Jamie Babbit’s, 1999 film, But I’m a Cheerleader, starring Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall. We discuss washing machine kissing, our love for Graham and lesbian stereotypes. While Becca questions if this film is based on her own life, Molly discovers her root to lesbianism is similar to the characters. The satirical element of this film highlights the stereotypes and that we must fit into a particular category: boy or girls, pink or blue, gay or straight… or a cheerleader.

While Graham likes girls A LOT, Megan gets good grades, goes to church… she’s a cheerleader. And we follow their journey through True Directions, 5 step, conversion therapy programme. As they fall in love with a little help from the ex-ex gays and underground homo-rail road. Only Megan would get kicked out of a conversion camp for homosexual activity. Returning to win her love back, in the only way she knows how… with a cheer.

This relatable, comedic film is a light-hearted twist on a much more serious topic.
