Pushkin. Hi,
0:19
It's Dave Coulie, the host of the true crime
0:21
podcast Cold. This season, I investigate
0:23
the disappearance of Shari Warren, a young
0:25
mother looking for a fresh start in
0:27
the process of a divorce. She'd moved back
0:30
in with her family, found a great new job and
0:32
even a new boyfriend. Her life was
0:34
turning around and things were looking up for the
0:36
first time in years. But on
0:38
one October evening, Shari said
0:40
goodbye to her co workers, left the office
0:42
and was never heard from again. All
0:45
eyes quickly turned toward her estranged husband.
0:47
He had a history of violence, having
0:50
previously lured another woman into the mountains
0:52
and beat her with a tire iron. But
0:54
there was also another man that piqued the
0:56
interest of investigators, Sharie's
0:59
new boyfriend, a former reserve police
1:01
officer who also had a dark
1:04
history of sexual violence. The
1:06
two men closest to Sharie, one
1:08
swore he loved her, the other seemed
1:11
not to care. But did one of them
1:14
murder her? I'm about to play a
1:16
clip from Cold, the search for Sharie.

1:38
rain drizzled over the canyon of the South Fork
1:40
of the Ogden River. It pattered
1:42
on the canvas top of Heidi Posnine's jeep
1:45
she drove up Utah State Highway thirty nine
1:47
on the morning of Friday, June fourth, nineteen
1:49
seventy one. She
1:52
was on her way to meet the strange man who had for
1:54
weeks been calling her demanding they
1:56
go on a date. I can't see
1:58
it, but I'm doing air quotes. She
2:01
turned right off the highway at the entrance to the
2:03
Meadows Campground, crossed a
2:05
short bridge over the river barely more
2:07
than a creek really, and stopped
2:09
next to a camper trailer on the far side.
2:12
A pair of Sheriff's deputies dressed as fishermen
2:14
stepped out to greet her, and I said, what should
2:16
I do? And he said, we just
2:19
pull across the street and
2:22
then leaves the jeep part thanks
2:24
the sideways, you know what I mean. As Heidi's
2:26
describing this to me decades later, she's
2:29
using her hands to show the positions of her jeep
2:31
and the trailer. How the deputies
2:33
told her to park next to them, but to
2:35
reverse out after the caller arrived and passed
2:37
by her position to block him from
2:40
getting back across the bridge to the road. She
2:44
was the cheese on the mouse trap, and
2:47
they said make sure when he comes up,
2:49
identify, make sure that he's
2:51
the right person. Two
2:54
miles down the canyon, back in the direction
2:57
of Huntsville, her husband, John Posneen,
2:59
waited at another campground called
3:01
Magpie. The sheriff was
3:03
with him, along with the deputy, Halver Bailey.
3:06
They all watched the highway as the clock
3:09
ticked toward the time for Heidee's date
3:11
to arrive. A little
3:13
after ten am, a red and white
3:15
half ton pickup truck passed Magpie.
3:17
Going up the canyon toward Meadows. John
3:20
Posney saw a logo printed on the truck's
3:22
door and a dummy. He was driving
3:25
his dad's business. Truck
3:27
said Hartman Plumbing,
3:30
And when day Joe passed Magpie, johns
3:32
he immediately knew who it was. Hartman
3:35
Plumbing and Heating belonged to a man named
3:37
Bill Hartman. John knew
3:39
Bill. They had golfed together at the Ogden
3:42
Golfing Country Club. Bill was
3:44
also a fellow member of the Weeber
3:46
Club. The caller had
3:48
told Heide he had seen her at the Weeber Club.
3:51
It clicked for John. He recognized
3:54
the man at the wheel of the pickup as
3:56
Bill Hartman's oldest son, Carrie
3:58
Hartman. The sheriff tried
4:00
to radio the two undercover deputies who were
4:02
with Heidi at Meadows to let them know that the collar
4:05
would soon reach them, but the radio
4:07
didn't work in the narrow canyon.
4:10
Heidi had no idea who
4:12
the young man in the pickup truck was when
4:14
he turned off the highway, drove
4:16
across the bridge and stopped
4:19
next to her. Gene No, because I never
4:21
paid any attention to him before. I didn't notice
4:24
him before the young man rolled
4:26
down his window. Heid he saw he
4:28
had brown hair, green eyes, and appeared
4:30
clean cut, like a cop or military
4:33
man. Kind of forgettable.
4:35
He said, high, I can't remember exactly,
4:38
And then I said, why would
4:40
you pick on an old lady like me? And he made
4:42
some remark that I was a sexier, prettier
4:45
something. You know, you're not an old lady at
4:47
this point though, Oh gosh, no, But
4:50
I was way older than he was. I already
4:52
had kids, you know teenagers.
4:55
So yeah, I was an old lady. Carry
4:59
Hartman was twenty two to Hide's thirty
5:01
six. And he kept looking at that trailer,
5:03
and he was getting a little nervous, and
5:06
he said, I'm gonna
5:09
pull up there. Why don't you follow me up there? By?
5:11
Up there, Carrieman farther into the campground
5:14
behind a line of trees out of side of the road.
5:17
He drove past her up around a bend. Heidi
5:20
put her jeep in reverse, pulled out, and blocked
5:22
the narrow road, just as the deputies
5:24
had instructed. She then leaped from
5:26
the jeep and rushed into the safety of their
5:28
trailer. The deputies
5:30
told her to stay put, then went to
5:32
stand next to the jeep. Heidi
5:35
poured herself a cup of coffee. With shaking
5:37
hands, she listened for the
5:39
sound of the pickup. It returned
5:41
after a few minutes. Heidi
5:44
peeked out the window as the deputies pulled
5:46
Carrie out of the truck and placed him under arrest.
5:50
They frisked him, finding a small knife
5:52
in his pocket. Then they tried to
5:54
call their backup down at the Magpie campground,
5:56
only to discover their radios didn't work. In the
5:58
canyon either. So the
6:00
deputies piled into Carrie's truck and drove
6:03
it and him down the canyon
6:05
to meet with the sheriff. I stayed awhile
6:07
because I was all nervous.
6:11
I guess whatever. I'd
6:13
had my coffee, and then I got in the cheap and I
6:15
drove down and they were already gone. So only
6:18
later did Heidi learn from her husband John
6:20
what had happened. When Carrie had arrived in handcuffs
6:23
at Magpie, John, she
6:25
told me, had turned to the sheriff.
6:27
He says, boy, you'd like to smack him
6:29
in the mouth, And he says well, and looked the other way.
6:32
So they had him already out,
6:35
and John touched him and
6:37
he was embarrassed. He looked down and he says,
6:40
I wish you had a gun and shoot me. Really
6:43
yeah, he said that because he was embarrassed.
6:45
He was ashamed. John
6:47
posnine had punched carry Hartman in
6:49
the face while the sheriff and his deputies
6:51
looked the other way. Needless
6:54
to say, this wasn't legal. The
6:57
deputies had then taken Carry to the Weaver County
6:59
Jail in Ogden, where they had booked him on suspicion
7:01
of making threatening phone calls, a
7:03
minor misdemeanor charge that
7:06
didn't quite match the gravity of the whole
7:08
situation. Carrie
7:10
provided a handwritten statement admitting to what
7:12
had happened. I called the lady and
7:14
said, would you meet me at a time and place.
7:17
If not, some harm would come to your husband's
7:19
car and possibly him. That's
7:22
not Carrie's voice, but they are his words
7:25
read by a voice actor. Even
7:27
today, Heidi downplays
7:29
this seriousness of what happened well, because
7:31
he really hadn't done anything other than met
7:34
me. But I'm here to tell
7:36
you there was something much more
7:38
ominous behind those phone calls,
7:40
something that makes Heidi's mouth go dry and
7:43
her hands fidget when she really stops to
7:45
think about it. This season
7:47
isn't about Heidi Posning, as I said
7:49
earlier. It's about the disappearance of Shari
7:51
Warren. But there's a reason we're
7:54
starting with Heidi instead of Shari.
7:57
It's because Carrie Hartman, the man
7:59
who tried to lure Heidi up that canyon,
8:02
would years later meet, befriend
8:05
and woo Sharie Warren.
8:15
Our story begins with a phone call.
8:17
Voice on the phone set, I was sexy. He
8:20
had made literally thousands of those types calls.
8:22
He follows the women gets to know him
8:25
and then hit, then don't
8:27
reporting nobody. The fife out everything.
8:29
There are a lot of missing girls, escalates.
8:32
She was beaten, stabbed until the knife
8:34
broke, and then shot twice in the head. Sharie
8:37
Warren disappeared in the fall of nineteen eighty
8:39
five. Her friends and family say she's not the
8:41
type to just run away. She wouldn't leave
8:44
her child. No one can say just what
8:46
happened to Sharie. No one's faced
8:48
charges for her disappearance, not her
8:50
ex husband Chuck Warren. Money
8:53
was a big issue, he told
8:55
her. If I can't have you, nobody's going to not.
8:57
Sharie's boyfriend Carrie Hartman careful
9:01
with him, yet too dispositions Doctor
9:03
Jekyll, mister Hyde. He could be the nicest
9:05
guy you ever wanted me, but he
9:08
also had that sinister side. Hey,
