0:46
a morning and late October of Ninety Ninety Nine,
0:48
forty eight year old Bruce Miller grabbed his
0:50
car keys off the kitchen counter, quickly devoured a
0:52
piece of toast, and then headed into the living
0:55
room of his ranch style home in the
0:57
small town of Cleo, Michigan. Bruce.
0:59
Was over six feet tall and lanky with
1:01
graying hair and a mustache. He wore a
1:03
button up shirt, jeans, and work boots. Bruce.
1:07
Walk towards the front door as is twenty eight
1:09
year old. Wave three rushed into the room from
1:11
hallway. Jury. Was short with dyed
1:13
blonde hair and light eyes. Mornings.
1:16
Were always a bit crazy and the Miller household.
1:18
Sheree. Had two young children from a previous
1:20
marriage and so she had to get them ready
1:22
for school and Bruce was always in a hurry
1:24
to get to the business that he owned. Bruce.
1:27
Lean down and kissed his wife and Sharif
1:29
face lit up. But. When she
1:31
got a good look at Bruce assured her
1:34
face completely changed. Sure, He reached
1:36
up to the front pocket on Bruce Assured
1:38
and she pulled out a huge wad of
1:40
cash. Then. She held the money up front
1:42
of Bruce and gave him a look like I
1:44
can't believe what you're doing. Everyone.
1:46
Who knew Bruce new? He always carried a whole
1:48
bunch of cash right in this front shirt pocket.
1:51
Bruce. Said it was to make change for customers
1:53
at work, but Sheree and others told him he
1:55
was crazy to have that much cash just out
1:57
in the open like that. It was like your
1:59
and. getting robbed, and Cherie really
2:01
wanted him to stop doing it. But
2:04
Bruce smiled and took the money back from Cherie
2:06
and slipped it right back into his shirt pocket.
2:09
He told her he'd be fine, he kissed her
2:11
again, and then walked outside into the cool fall
2:13
air. A
2:16
little after 5 p.m., so just as the sun
2:18
was setting below the horizon, Bruce decided it was
2:20
time to head back inside the office to get
2:22
some paperwork done before he went home. When
2:25
he went in there, the one employee was still inside,
2:27
and so Bruce told them they could head home and
2:30
that Bruce would stick around and close up the yard
2:32
on his own. And so after the
2:34
employee thanked him and left, Bruce sat down in
2:36
his old metal swivel chair and began digging through
2:38
a stack of papers on the front counter, looking
2:40
for a few forms that he needed to sign.
2:45
About an hour later, at 6 p.m., Bruce
2:47
was still inside the office doing paperwork when
2:49
the office phone rang. Bruce
2:52
answered, and he heard his wife's voice on the
2:54
other line. She told him that
2:56
the kids really wanted pizza from their favorite restaurant for
2:58
dinner that night, and so she would call the order
3:00
in if he could just pick it up on the
3:02
way home. Bruce said that sounded
3:05
great and that he would and that he'd close up shop in
3:07
just a few minutes. So he told Bruce
3:09
she loved him, and they both hung up. Bruce
3:12
pulled out a cigarette and lit it, and then exhaled
3:14
a puff of smoke and then glanced back down at
3:16
the paperwork on his desk to make sure he'd finished
3:18
everything he wanted to. But
3:20
as he was doing this, suddenly the
3:23
front door to the office swung open,
3:25
someone stepped inside, and the door slammed
3:27
shut behind them. A
3:34
little after 8 p.m., so two hours after Cherie
3:36
had talked to Bruce on the phone about pizza,
3:38
she paced around her living room. The
3:41
kids were sitting in the kitchen still waiting for
3:43
pizza, and Bruce had still not arrived home. Cherie
3:46
went to the kitchen, grabbed the phone, and called the
3:48
salvage yard. She
3:50
told the kids that Bruce must have been
3:52
delayed with a last-minute customer, but as she
3:54
sat there, the phone just kept on ringing
3:56
and nobody picked up. So
3:59
eventually Cherie hung up. up, called Bruce's brother,
4:01
and asked if he had heard from Bruce.
4:03
The two brothers talked all the time, especially about
4:06
football, and Cherie knew there was a big Monday
4:08
night football game on. But
4:10
Bruce's brother, surprisingly, said they actually had not
4:12
spoken at all that day. But
4:15
Bruce's brother could tell Cherie sounded very worried, so
4:17
he tried to calm her down. He
4:19
said Bruce was most likely somewhere between the salvage
4:21
yard and the pizza place, or maybe he had
4:23
already gotten the pizza and he was on his
4:25
way home. But either way, he was probably just
4:28
fine. And so after that, they
4:30
hung up. But Cherie did not
4:32
feel any calmer. So
4:34
she grabbed the kids, put them in her car, and
4:36
drove to the pizza place. But
4:38
she didn't pass Bruce on the way, and when
4:40
she got to the restaurant, they told her that
4:42
Bruce had never come in to pick up the
4:44
order. Cherie grabbed the
4:46
pizza and then raced back home with the
4:48
kids and immediately called her brother-in-law again. And
4:51
this time, when he heard Cherie's voice, he
4:53
could tell she was far more anxious, and
4:55
he admitted to her, after hearing what had
4:57
just happened, that this did seem pretty strange.
5:00
So he told Cherie that he and his wife would
5:02
go right now over to the salvage yard to just
5:05
check on things. A
5:08
few minutes after that phone call, Bruce's brother
5:10
and his wife drove through the open gate
5:12
at the salvage yard, and right away they
5:14
spotted Bruce's car still parked out in front
5:16
of the office. Now, the sight
5:18
of his car made Bruce's brother actually feel
5:20
better. He figured Bruce must have
5:22
gotten caught up with work, and he must have just
5:24
been on the phone with somebody else when Cherie had
5:27
tried calling him. Bruce's
5:29
brother and his wife stepped out of their car and
5:31
walked up to the office door, and right
5:33
away they froze. Because when they
5:35
looked down, they could see the front door
5:38
to the office was actually cracked open a
5:40
bit, and they knew Bruce never left the
5:42
store open when he was working alone at
5:44
night because of all the theft. And so
5:46
this was a big red flag. Bruce's
5:49
brother and his wife began calling out
5:51
Bruce's name through this gap in the
5:53
door, but nobody answered from inside. So
5:56
The couple nodded to each other, and then pushed the
5:58
door open and stepped into the. This right
6:00
away they saw a huge pile of cigarette butts
6:02
on the floor in front of the counter. Then.
6:05
They walked around the counter and looked down
6:07
at the floor and when they did they
6:09
just stood there in total shock. Bruce.
6:12
Was sprawled out on the floor and
6:14
a sick pool of blood. Bruce brother
6:16
instinctively dropped down to try to revive
6:18
Bruce, but he already knew Bruce was
6:20
dead. Heat.
