In february 1959 an experienced group of 10 students set off on a skiing expedition deep in the soviet union. The group consisted of 8 men 2 women all experienced backpackers all with grade 2 hiking skill certifications and upon returning from this trek they would recieve their grade 3 credentials, Grade 3 being the highest level at that time.

Lead by 23 year old radio engineering student Igor Dyatlov a very well respected and knowledged individual he would take the group of his fellow students from the Ural Polytechnical Institute deep into soviet wilderness to the far northern regions of sverdlovsk oblast eventually arriving at the mountain called gora otorten. The route was designed by the group taking them into ural mountains and estimated to be a category 3 the most difficult to traverse and now named after the groups leader Dyaltov.
