Lark-a-dum.

0:05

Cool. Do I have your attention? Awesome. Greetings,

0:07

adventurers. We have a very important update for you today.

0:09

I've tried to say this four different times and people are

0:11

still asking. Season 2 is on hiatus.

0:14

The cast of Team A, the

0:17

two people there, got married, they moved,

0:19

they got a home, they have new jobs, and they need

0:21

a little bit of time. We'll be returning to their story

0:23

as soon as we're able. In the meantime, please enjoy

0:25

Season 3. Thank you very much. Shalice

0:29

DePace. Salis.

0:33

Do you seek him? Do you seek him? Do

0:36

you seek him? Do

0:38

you seek him? Do

0:40

you seek the nameless god? You have found yourself

0:43

among those who roll the dark dice.

0:46

What you are about to hear happened long ago. A story brought back from

0:49

the edge of oblivion. Dutifully transcribed and

0:52

enhanced orally to

0:54

better captivate your attention. Previously,

0:58

Fyndgraveu's conversation with Linzen was

1:00

cut short. The heavy

1:02

dwarf moved through the air quickly, followed by a deep

1:04

throat-tearing scream. Something, an

1:07

ever-shifting effervescent darkness had descended from above,

1:10

wrapping the dwarf in rows of silvery teeth. With

1:12

oily skin that glistened in the starlight and

1:14

long flowing lines of bioluminescent tendril

1:16

shining blue into sickly pink, a

1:19

creature, wingless but instead with seafaring

1:21

fins had stolen Linzen up into the night

1:23

sky. Fyndgraveu had failed his sanity

1:26

saving throw and was left on the deck in

1:28

utter disbelief, completely shocked by what

1:30

he'd seen. The wet freckles of blood on his

1:32

face, lending to the idea that it might not

1:34

be a hallucination. And as Fynd looked

1:36

left and right, seeing if anyone else could see what he'd

1:38

experienced, his legs became rigid

1:40

like the wood beams beneath him and he struggled

1:42

to find breath.

1:44

As deckhand

1:45

Becker called out in panic, those

1:47

with an earshot were ready to action. The

1:50

willow's wake was under attack and combat began. Ajay

1:52

was first to act. Ajay

1:55

puts the book away and throws his hand

1:57

into the air and as he does, a winding

1:59

wood

1:59

The golden staff appears in wisps of

2:02

wrapping shadow, almost as though it's

2:04

facing the wrong angle or a

2:06

shadowy figure from the corner of your eye,

2:08

almost translucent and hard to perceive,

2:11

has passed the weapon to Ajay. Ajay

2:14

aims the staff at the creature and casts phantasmal

2:16

force, creating

2:17

an illusion, an image in its

2:20

mind that only it and Ajay can

2:22

see. And this image is that the

2:24

man in its mouth is on fire.

2:27

And whilst the fire is illusionary, it

2:29

will believe the fire is real. Ajay

2:31

will also prepare himself to maneuver to the side

2:33

of the ship nearest to where the creature is, hoping

2:36

that he can throw a rope towards the man if he

2:38

falls overboard. Lan was next to

2:40

act aware only of the sound of screams.

2:43

So I'm in my room sleeping,

2:46

because I think Yara says something about

2:48

sea sirens and to just stay in my room. So

2:50

I told that really seriously and was just like,

2:52

okay, that's no problem. And after I

2:54

share some coffee with the crew, I change into my

2:56

formal sleeping wear and turn in

2:59

early for the night.

3:00

Okay,

3:02

um, Lan wrapped in silk

3:05

and salt air, heard yelling from outside her

3:07

door. There are flying sharks! I

3:09

repeat, there are flying sharks! Oh

3:12

man. I wonder if I can sleep through this. And

3:15

I roll on my other side so I don't face the door

3:17

and try to put my pillow over my head and sleep through

3:19

it.

3:21

Both DMs blinked loudly,

3:23

have been taking time to acknowledge

3:25

the expression of horror around the table,

3:28

but even the gods must permit free will.

3:31

And supposed that, in this case,

3:34

Lan was free to do as she wished.

3:39

After things get a little bit worse or

3:41

too loud, I guess I'll get up and

3:44

let me see what's happening outside my room.

3:45

Okay, so

3:47

Nimbou, who was asleep near the stairs,

3:49

you know, so he could look up at the stars, jumps

3:52

immediately up when he hears the scream and

3:54

when he gets to the top and sees the blood

3:56

and the flying tentacle shark

3:58

is going up for the

3:59

Bling the rock with his lint to see if it's real

4:02

or not. Fork it. What

4:04

in nature's name is that? Is

4:06

this a dream? Fuck, it's not

4:08

a dream. The rock hit the creature, bouncing

4:10

off its fin and landing harmlessly on deck. Vind,

4:13

frozen with fear, weighed his options. His

4:15

mind raced, pondered if the creature relied

4:18

on movement to see, and his staying still might

4:20

keep him safe. But then he remembered

4:22

Linzen was in its mouth. This thought pushed

4:24

Vind past the fear, and his hands sought comfort

4:26

on the grip of his favorite weapon, a hunting

4:28

javelin. I'm aiming

4:29

for a kill. But

4:32

unfortunately, fear had stiffened his reflexes,

4:34

and the javelin missed its mark, splitting the deck of

4:36

the willows wake

4:37

instead. You are supposed to hit the creature,

4:39

not the ship. What are you doing? Sensing

4:42

something unpleasant and burning in its mouth, the

4:44

shark-like creature dropped their unconscious Linzen into

4:46

the icy waters and quickly found new

4:48

prey. A horned half-orc, glowing

4:51

and moving, jumping and screaming,

4:54

almost wishing to be hunted. It

4:56

descended upon him, biting deep into Ajay's

4:58

side. OK,

5:01

that shark took more than half my hit points in one go. Ah,

5:05

this is fine. This is fine. Yeah, there's

5:07

no way I just couldn't do this. I'm going

5:09

to look at this thing as it chomps down on

5:11

me and yell, I thought you

5:13

had enough of fire. And I'm going to burst

5:15

into flames, as I harsh to hellish rebuke

5:18

as my reaction, 14 points of damage.

5:20

Ajay, seeing the shine of countless teeth preemptively

5:22

hastens an incantation, immolating the very blood

5:24

within his body, his eyes practically glowing,

5:27

setting the shark-like mouth ablaze with his own burning

5:29

blood as it carved into his side. The

5:32

creature thrashed out in surprise and pain as

5:34

some of its teeth cracked within its mouth from the intense

5:36

heat. Moments before, on the port side

5:38

of the willow's wake, scanning the horizon in

5:40

waves for the

5:41

mark of sea sirens, sat Lady Viviana

5:43

blood chamber. Set upon spying a mythical

5:45

creature, she had not seen the dangerous beast floating

5:48

above the willow's wake behind as it swooped

5:50

down to take Linzen.

5:51

Viviana preemptively

5:53

passed her wisdom saving throw, and as

5:55

she stared off into the darkness, listening,

5:58

looking, and hoping to catch a glimpse of the

5:59

the siren's mythic beauty, she found

6:02

that, oh yes, there was something out

6:04

there. A light, and it

6:06

grew closer, trailing an unnatural

6:08

darkness that swirled above the water's

6:10

surface. Closer and closer,

6:12

it almost appeared as an illusion.

6:15

But no, surely this shifting darkness

6:17

grew closer and within that darkness

6:20

more lights began to appear. As

6:22

the yell of shark behind Viviana

6:24

grew louder, the darkness began to dispel,

6:27

and a massive creature emerged from within.

6:29

A

6:29

new set of teeth, tendrils, and

6:32

wingless flight. The beast

6:34

rushed upon Viviana, rows of teeth

6:37

hungrily chomping in anticipation as

6:39

it flew closer. The

6:41

creature surprised Viviana with its speed

6:43

and alien features, and her dangerous

6:45

glance over her shoulder to see another such creature

6:47

take Linzen away and cross her of her footing.

6:50

The attacking creature was upon her in the blink

6:52

of an eye, its teeth biting into her

6:54

arm for eight piercing damage, taking a chunk

6:57

of bloody flesh from her forearm, but not

6:59

ripping the limb cleanly off as she'd expected.

7:01

As

7:07

yet another shadow appeared, dotted with ghostly

7:09

abyssal lights moving toward the middle deck toward Yara,

7:11

would come up to proudly review his work from the past

7:14

few days. But the lights in the darkness

7:16

held a strange and special meaning to the shipwright.

7:18

Perhaps not these lights, but similar

7:21

glowing wisps of terrible and bygone days.

7:24

His eyes immediately found them, and with

7:26

haunted awe he was forced to make a wisdom

7:28

saving throw. Wisdom of

7:31

all things? And all at once the shipwright

7:33

was entranced, stunned, brought

7:35

back to a moment

7:36

in his past. The lights looked

7:38

so beautiful, and Yara's mind transported

7:41

him back to that beach, powerless,

7:44

a hopeless child unable to

7:45

defend himself. Dancing

7:47

lights upon rolling waters, driftwood

7:50

cathedrals on shaky sands, the

7:53

futility of it all, the loss,

7:56

the fire. And

7:58

then a creature emerged, a

7:59

attached to those lights, one that he

8:02

still could not, would not see.

8:05

A beast that dove to snap at the ship right,

8:07

biting fear into his shoulder for 12 damage,

8:10

lifting him off the ground as it sailed past toward

8:12

the far side of the ship. The pain

8:14

of pierced skin and the sudden sensation of flying

8:16

shocked awake the lost and drifting mind of the ship

8:18

right. But he was helpless still as he flew 10 feet

8:21

from the deck, one arm fully within the mouth of

8:23

the beast and its wriggling tendrils.

8:25

Firing! Start clear!

8:27

Just then,

8:27

a harpoon loosed, as the scowling face

8:29

of second mate, Av Mitov, aimed down its sights. The

8:32

shocked did little, but enough to shallowly stick the metal

8:35

barb into the monster's side, surprising

8:37

it enough to let loose its prey, dropping Yara

8:39

to the deck. Oh,

8:41

too hot! And

8:45

Yara, noticing the other hapu gun, mumbled

8:47

to himself, abones, and

8:49

nearly trips over himself to reach it and swivel

8:52

it toward the shock as it turns around in mid-air

8:54

to attack him again, cheering himself

8:56

on.

8:57

It's, it's pretty close to me. How

9:00

can I miss? Famous last words.

9:03

He fires. Still terrified,

9:05

his mind yet returning from those glowing

9:07

lights in his memories, Yara's aim was

9:09

off. The harpoon flew past the creature

9:11

into the water, rope trailing behind. First

9:14

mate, Mason Lures, appeared next to Yara from the helm,

9:16

smearing a thick salve across the ship right's wound

9:18

to stop the bleeding. It's going to hurt? I

9:21

thought it was the help. Ow! Good,

9:23

okay, now help me to reload the harpoon. Convo

9:26

was next to act. Convo was used to

9:28

running on deck while he still half asleep. This

9:31

isn't his first nautical beast attack, and

9:33

because he was off duty, he's without

9:35

his armor. But he'll instinctively grab his

9:37

hatchet, and when he sees the creature

9:39

flying above him, his old first

9:42

mate instincts just sort of kick in. What

9:45

the hells? Quickly, Yelena,

9:48

Linson, Vetcher, get everybody below

9:50

deck! A glow emanated from Convo's

9:52

back as the tattooed landscape of the volcano trail

9:54

began to radiate a powerful light, and his

9:56

body began to change, grow. Convo's

9:59

muscles stretch.

10:00

as he doubled in size in mere moments, rippling

10:02

with the strength of a giant and a height of

10:04

over 10 feet. Confident in his power,

10:07

Convo charged the creature beside Viviana, grappling

10:09

its head to the 23 and using his reaction to

10:11

activate another one of the runes woven within his tattoos.

10:14

His left arm, in fact, twirled, stones surrounding

10:16

a sword and shield, danced with the magical

10:19

life of their own, those giant runes

10:21

shifting to glowing life as he growled at the sharp

10:23

rythe in his arms. Go

10:26

to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep. Shh,

10:28

shh. And the creature seemed to heed his words,

10:31

its flails becoming simple

10:32

twitches as it allowed itself to be pulled

10:34

to the deck, immobile and seemingly

10:36

asleep, still held down by the invigant

10:38

Convo.

10:39

Viviana, who watched Convo's exchange in the last

10:42

few seconds, was next to act. Her attacker

10:44

now asleep and grappled to the deck before

10:46

her.

10:46

Viviana is quite upset that she was bit

10:48

and instinctively yells, You asshole!

10:51

With my unbit arm, I take out one of my family

10:54

daggers, a very, very pretty dagger,

10:56

so shiny, looks expensive, and

10:58

they proceed to try to stab it in the eyeball,

11:01

wherever that is. Natural 20.

11:02

Viviana rolled

11:05

quite well on the critical hit chart and unleashed

11:07

a flurry of attacks.

11:09

Yeah, every stab, I'm just going, Die,

11:12

you stupid shark! How

11:14

dare you bite me! Now I

11:16

have blood, all over my clothes! The

11:18

bloody and grinning tiefling pulled her dagger

11:21

from the creature's flesh a final time, covered

11:23

from head to toe in blood and quite

11:26

pleased

11:26

with herself. The

11:28

beast's glow began to fade and its body,

11:30

which had momentarily thrashed on deck, fell

11:32

limp, its life pouring out over wooden

11:34

boards. Viviana, who is now under element,

11:37

dashed over toward another, hoping to be of help to someone

11:39

stuck in its jaws. The creature

11:41

next to Ajay was furious, confused and

11:43

hungry, as the form of Deckhandulena appeared

11:45

before it, rushing beneath its considerable bulk, and

11:47

cutting deep into its exposed underbelly as

11:50

it snapped at the air beside her. Slingada!

11:53

A low chanting foreshadowed galaxy to see magics

11:55

as a chilling

11:56

beam of freezing air shot toward the tendril'd

11:58

fiend, the resulting wind... Asje is bleeding

12:00

a lot and feeling pretty weak right now, so he's gonna look over at the

12:28

hatch next to him that

12:29

leads to the hold and make sure the fluffy

12:32

prisoner is still in her cage before

12:34

he makes his move.

12:48

I

12:54

am glad someone is so chilled on this boat, that

12:57

is great. We are being attacked by flying

12:59

sharks while you stay down here and chill with dead

13:01

wizards.

13:02

Was that an order or a question? Either

13:05

way, I'll do that. Seeing

13:07

that the last shark thing is between

13:09

me and the stairs to the mass, Asje is going

13:11

to cast Eldritch Blast at this

13:13

creature. Asje

13:16

pivoted around to face his target as the end of his staff

13:18

begins a radiant swirling mixture of shadow and

13:20

purple light. The glow

13:22

traveled to the end of the staff, peeling off small

13:24

sparks of gold from the precious metal-flecked wood,

13:26

appearing almost like cracks in the miasma.

13:29

The culmination of this energy directed by the staff's

13:31

focus shot forth, smashing into the skull

13:33

of the remaining shark-deer Yara, the crackling

13:35

glow reflecting on its rolling rows of teeth

13:37

just before impact. This powerful

13:40

blast

13:40

threw the creature into an uncontrolled aerial spin,

13:42

its tendrils flailing chaotically to find balance.

13:45

It was then that the door to the guest quarters opened

13:48

and Lon appeared, dressed in finely stitched

13:50

sleeping silks.

13:51

Lon sees that everybody seems to be in

13:53

control of a situation, so she just stands

13:56

by and claps at the Vivian's bravery,

13:58

courage, and success.

13:59

and uses Bardock's inspiration on Viviana.

14:02

Wow, Viviana!

14:05

That was some great work there, huh? Oh,

14:09

yeah, thanks. Nimble

14:11

maneuvered himself toward the center of the boat, hoping to

14:13

avoid being thrown overboard by the chaotic thrashing

14:15

of a shark. Oh, well, maybe if I'm unlucky

14:17

enough, it will just bite me and chew

14:19

me on the boat so people can recognize my corpse

14:22

later. So I take one

14:24

of my special stones, a heavy

14:26

polished round one. Yes, that should

14:28

do the trick. And I load it into my

14:31

sling. Finger waste, don't! And

14:33

I fling it with a 15, 12 damage. Though

14:37

perceived as a children's toy to many fighters and

14:39

hunters around the continent,

14:40

nimble-remble trout spine shroud wielded

14:42

the sling with an unforeseen mastery. The

14:45

heavy stones struck the side of the beast's head, causing

14:48

an audible crack. The power of the impact

14:50

stopped the shark's wild spin, and it locked

14:52

its senses onto the offending halfling. Then,

14:55

hoping to aid a friend

14:56

in danger, calls out to the shark, taunting

14:58

it into switching its attention onto himself. Over

15:01

here! Hey, over

15:03

here, foul thing! The shark gladly

15:05

turned its gaze to the screaming prey, locking

15:08

its black deep realm eyes with fins.

15:10

And he throws all four of his javelins

15:12

at the creature in rapid succession thematically,

15:15

with a 21 to hit, seven damage.

15:18

The golden haired elf threw all four of his javelins

15:20

in the span of six seconds. A barrage

15:22

of sharpened wood battered its sturdy hide, and

15:25

one javelin caught the dorsal fin, skewering it through.

15:28

This sent the monster into a thrashing frenzy, and it

15:30

quickly spun, taking part of the willows

15:32

railing with it. The descendant then, in the

15:34

smell of blood, crashing into the water, where

15:36

Linzen floated mere moments before, taking

15:38

the deckhand down into the depths with it.

15:41

Combat had concluded.

15:44

How is it possible that when

15:46

you do actually hit the shark, you still do

15:48

damage to the sheep? Ka! Udo,

15:52

drawn to the deck from the deep galley beneath,

15:55

surveyed the scene. She did not

15:57

know what had come to pass mere moments ago, and

15:59

so smiled.

15:59

as she noticed the large, bloody shark

16:02

next to Convo. Pleased, she

16:04

looked to Lady Viviana, who was covered in dark

16:06

blood from her finely formed boots to her

16:08

unkempt hair, and chuckled.

16:10

Ah, so we're having shark

16:13

tomorrow! Convo, take

16:15

that to the galley. Yeah, boss. I

16:18

kinda nod my head and get close

16:20

to Yelena and Mumbo. Hey, go

16:23

help Yara out. See if you can

16:25

see any trace of Linson.

16:27

Yeah, but I

16:30

don't think... And then, as I'm hearing

16:32

everyone breathing heavy, trying to get

16:34

their breath back, I let out a very

16:37

frustrated snort, and I just pick

16:39

up the shark, put him over my shoulders. I

16:42

open the gate where Viviana was, trying to sneak into,

16:44

and I just toss the whole thing down there. With

16:50

a muted grunt and a scowl, Convo slammed the

16:52

door to the hatch before slowly walking down the

16:54

stairs. His magic's fading,

16:56

and his body shrinking back to its normal size.

16:59

Is everybody okay?

17:00

It was only

17:03

then that Uda made eye contact with

17:05

Yelena, whose face wore a dejected

17:07

look of sorrow. With a small

17:09

shake of her head, Yelena told Uda all

17:11

she knew of the battle, and her smile

17:14

disappeared.

17:15

Uda walked over to place a

17:17

hand on her shoulder. That

17:19

was very impressive work. Has

17:21

anyone checked for Linson? Linson? Oh,

17:24

no, no, no. Oh, there was someone

17:27

in the water. I heard it. That

17:29

shark-tantico thing, it took someone with

17:31

it. It looked like Linson.

17:33

I saw him hit the water, and

17:35

he was not moving. I

17:38

do not think our friend is still... I do

17:40

not think he was still there to save. God.

17:44

If what he's saying is true, we only continue onward.

17:47

I've checked to make sure that nobody else is missing.

17:50

Get out, sloopers! Low

17:52

and steady! He's dead. He's 100%

17:54

dead. I was trying

17:58

to sugarcoat it a bit. But

18:00

we're all here. We're all here.

18:02

That's good news. We have, um,

18:05

we have each other. And that's good. Good

18:08

work, everyone. Sorry, I took out

18:10

most of the ship, but we should be okay.

18:13

Yes, wonderful indeed, everybody.

18:16

Good job. Good job. Such

18:18

great, great teamwork, everyone.

18:20

Great teamwork, guys. Great teamwork. I

18:23

don't know if

18:24

I would describe this as wonderful.

18:27

We were told about Sirens, but this is

18:29

a little bit more than that,

18:31

no? This is awesome.

18:33

Sirens, sharks, someone

18:35

just died. This

18:38

is amazing. I take up my notebook

18:40

and I start scribbling down notes immediately.

18:44

Yara, I didn't know that there'd be sharks

18:46

along with sea sirens. I'm kind of excited

18:48

about dinner tomorrow now. Long

18:51

wasn't around to see what happened to Linson, so

18:53

she views this as a success.

18:55

Yara, you see him

18:58

kind of shaking his head a little, looking

19:00

over the railing with Nimble and Yelena to

19:02

see if there's any trace or part

19:04

of Linson left to be seen. But

19:07

he sees even the blood has been taken

19:09

away by the sea. Sealy,

19:12

having taken shelter in the mess, flies

19:14

to his shoulder and purchase there, but he doesn't

19:17

notice for once. There's still

19:20

something off about him, some

19:22

invisible weight pulling at him. But

19:25

really, he's just shaking his head,

19:28

distracting himself, undecided

19:30

what damage to take care of first, be

19:32

it his bleeding shoulder or the railing

19:35

that he had just repaired. And you can

19:37

see that he's really upset about

19:39

the railing, perhaps trying to

19:41

distract himself from the loss of Linson.

19:44

And taking eight stress damage. The

19:48

railing. Just fixed

19:50

it.

19:51

That was the good one. That

19:54

feeling of hopelessness lingered with the shipwright,

19:57

even after the lights of those creatures were far

19:59

beyond view.

19:59

The man he and Convo

20:02

had shared wine and spirits with, the

20:04

oldest living crew member of the Willow's

20:06

Wake, was now gone. Convo,

20:10

in turn,

20:11

took eight stress damage. Ahh.

20:14

Lon's like, hmm, normal day. Did

20:17

Lon lift a finger when the sharks were around us? She did

20:19

clap. She

20:22

gave bardic inspiration. That's

20:24

nice. Yeah, I did

20:26

if you're counting teamwork, you know. Everybody

20:29

pitches in however they can best. Lon's

20:31

not so much for the fighting as she is for the...

20:35

encouragement.

20:36

To also clarify Vin's question, Lon

20:38

was wearing an embroidered silk sleeping suit. Incredibly

20:41

fancy attire, even by Elvin's standards,

20:44

but ultimately one not suited for battle.

20:46

My sleeping robe is on, my pom-poms

20:48

on them, you know? You know, like all the comfy

20:51

and just like, wow, there's blood.

20:54

Let me like move over here instead.

20:57

She's done her evening skincare routine and

20:59

has her little like, sleep mask all set

21:01

up. Good job, guys. Oh, good

21:03

job.

21:04

Nimbo's still bummed,

21:07

like, someone just died.

21:10

He's still looking into the ocean

21:13

after a couple seconds, minutes. He's

21:15

not counting time. And

21:17

he just hopes to see

21:19

maybe a corpse, maybe linson

21:22

swimming safe, but

21:24

he doesn't see no one coming up. And

21:28

he gathered

21:30

a rock, one of his stones from his flings, and

21:32

he whispers to himself, I

21:35

may have not known you, but may

21:38

you're in a better place. Now

21:40

you're one with the water. And

21:43

I throw a rock and say,

21:46

May that be with you so you're not alone

21:48

down there. And he

21:51

watches it as it's sinking, and

21:54

maybe he's not used to seeing

21:57

how it's just keep going down

21:59

and down. to the dark, like

22:02

it's so deep. He thinks

22:04

like what else is there? He

22:07

never seen sharks like that.

22:10

It's scary. And

22:12

Nimble takes some stress damage, not

22:15

really sure if he is like or if

22:17

he can even be prepared for the kinds

22:20

of dangerous things,

22:22

the waters of the deep sea hoe. This

22:26

is, he thinks now, the lowest point

22:28

of his trip. He

22:29

feels awful, he feels ashamed.

22:33

He felt like this was a

22:35

big fun adventure and he

22:37

goes back into the boat, into the mess

22:39

and sits in the dark. He

22:42

has the vial, the little bit of water from his

22:44

home river and he takes a good

22:46

long while looking at it, thinking,

22:48

okay, that's

22:51

it. I'm not home anymore.

22:54

Nimble stared at the vial until

22:56

his eyes grew heavy and he could remain

22:59

awake no longer. When

23:01

morning awoke the willows wake, those

23:03

aboard were no longer as relaxed or

23:05

as joyful as the days previous. The

23:08

mornings were dark, void of the

23:10

sun, as here in the north the

23:12

sunlit days had grown ever short and

23:15

a sadness pushed through the ship like fog.

23:18

Denzinn, the dwarven deckhand and friend

23:21

to some, had been killed, pulled

23:23

down beneath the waves. During

23:26

a closed door meeting, Captain Gelmaine and

23:28

sea sorcerer Glesk later concluded

23:31

the attacking creatures were adolescent

23:33

abyssal trenchmakos, an abominable

23:36

bioluminescent amalgamation of shark

23:38

and squid from the sunken one's deepest

23:41

depths. Captain Gelmaine

23:43

had announced the previous night, as blood was

23:45

mopped from the deck, that a funeral service

23:47

and remembrance of Linzen would be held

23:50

the following morning and the time

23:52

had come. He

23:54

gave a speech

23:54

commemorating the man he had known most of

23:56

his life, the only other person

23:59

who had known the willows like their homeland.

24:02

He recounted the adventures they had shared and celebrated

24:04

the dwarf's many accomplishments and

24:07

his simple, contented life. After,

24:10

Captain Gelmane asked if anyone else wanted

24:12

to say a few words. The entire

24:15

crew, it seemed, had something nice to

24:17

say about Winston, a story to

24:19

share. The final crew

24:21

member to speak was Convo, new

24:24

as he was to the Willows way, but not

24:26

new to the perils of the sea. He

24:29

said his piece

24:29

and ended with a phrase

24:32

some sailors understood far too well.

24:35

But Nel Deech has once again come to

24:37

claim what's hers. The

24:39

guests observed the funeral with varying

24:41

degrees of interest. Lan

24:44

briefly considered giving a speech herself, perhaps

24:46

reading a poem or doing something,

24:49

anything, as a gesture of respect,

24:52

but chose to withhold her involvement in

24:54

any capacity beyond spectator. This

24:57

was a time she knew her silence

24:59

was worth more than her words. And

25:02

it was in that moment that she noticed Viviana

25:05

was missing from the events. Hmm,

25:07

I wonder where Lady Viviana went.

25:11

Oh, RJ's missing too.

25:14

And so is Ciri. Nope,

25:17

looks like she just caught a rat, never mind.

25:19

There are no rats on the Willows

25:21

way. And as

25:24

the funeral concludes, because

25:26

he's seen that Nimble is quite

25:28

shaken with the whole situation, Jad

25:31

is going to go real quick down to the deep holds.

25:34

And he's noticed that this ship, which

25:36

is quite old, two people have taken shortcuts

25:39

and simply patching things instead of

25:41

fixing them over the years. He's

25:43

noticed that there was a huge sack of weighing

25:46

stones that had been discarded in the deep

25:48

hold. And he just

25:49

grabs two or three, which

25:52

to his eye are nice looking

25:54

stones. And he just grabs them. And

25:57

without saying another word, he with a

25:59

knowing Nod puts them down

26:02

beside Nimble who's sitting

26:04

at the front of the ship and pads

26:06

them on the shoulder. You're

26:09

a good man Jare. Hope not many

26:11

sharks bite you in your life. With

26:13

a nod, kind of confused at

26:15

the kind but very specific wording,

26:18

Jare goes his way to continue fixing that

26:21

railing. More than the railing needs

26:23

to be fixed. More

26:25

than the railing indeed. And

26:28

Jare, he's

26:29

a bit off still from

26:32

last night's encounter and his work

26:34

is still not quite up to the

26:37

normal standards he holds shipwrights

26:39

to.

26:40

Both Jare and Nimble recover

26:42

to stress damage. Lady

26:45

Viviana took advantage of the time during Lindzen's

26:47

funeral to find her way back into

26:50

the cargo hold. With the crew

26:52

occupied above, she could now see what

26:54

it was that interested her so much from before.

26:57

It's a funeral. I've been to many.

26:59

It's the same old one of many.

27:02

I'm pretty bored so I'll take that time to

27:04

go investigate the cargo. Yeah.

27:06

Home and she knew was not at his post

27:08

as he himself seemed greatly saddened to learn

27:10

of Lindzen's death. So it was

27:13

that even the one room meant to be guarded at

27:15

all times

27:16

was left unattended. As

27:18

she silently stepped through, one of the boxes

27:20

had a different kind of wood and

27:22

this drew her attention briefly. But

27:25

she continued on, moving toward the Owl Bear

27:27

and the Prisoner. First she greeted

27:29

the Owl Bear with a smile and an enthused

27:31

greeting, throwing it a dead reason.

27:35

And then Viviana turned to the Prisoner, a

27:37

bearded blonde man grind with dirt

27:40

and sweat. She locked her purple

27:42

eyes to his crazed gaze.

27:44

Who are you? Who

27:47

would like to know? Me,

27:50

obviously. I'm asking you. You.

27:52

You. You. I am man. I am

27:55

flesh.

27:59

I am a made, I am prisoner,

28:02

I am. Yes,

28:04

I am a humble follower of the one

28:06

of grand creation.

28:09

They are noign. I

28:11

am one who follows a path.

28:16

So what's a religious person like you doing in

28:18

a cage then? You

28:20

see it too. It

28:22

is a religion. Something...

28:26

something views

28:28

my work as extreme. Yet

28:31

I'm only devoted and I'm always faithful.

28:35

I shall never blaspheme.

28:38

You must have done something. I

28:40

mean no one's gonna throw a religious godly

28:42

man into a prison for no reason, right?

28:45

We agree then, that one

28:47

acting in the name of the true power

28:50

cannot be the faulty party.

28:53

I am innocent,

28:55

but those who do not understand

28:58

want me to face trial up

29:01

north. Because they worship lesser

29:04

gods, because they do not see

29:06

the true way. And

29:09

I believe this is unjust. Surely

29:12

you believe it too.

29:15

Sure, yeah, believe in other gods

29:17

unjust. So what'd you do, kill them? At

29:20

first I only tried to show

29:22

them the path. He grinned.

29:25

His eyes shifted for a brief moment, as

29:27

though a cloud lifted, and Viviana

29:29

thought she could see the stars reflected in his eyes.

29:32

Though even outside the stars were not visible

29:35

in this heavy sea-fogged morning.

29:37

Can I at least ask your name? Ula.

29:41

Ula. She takes out a notebook

29:43

and starts writing. Can you spell

29:45

that? Is it U-L-A-H or like...

29:48

Ula as the time-worn

29:51

saint, Ula underlies

29:54

all.

29:55

U-L-A-Hula. Well,

29:58

my name is Viviana. You wanna be like... like friends

30:00

or something? You're kinda cool. Well,

30:03

Matt Viviana, I would

30:05

like that very much.

30:08

Awesome. Can you also not tell

30:10

anyone that I've been down here? You know, just

30:13

because that other orc dude, super,

30:16

super, hmm.

30:17

Friends keep secrets and

30:19

yours is safe with

30:22

me. She smiles and extends

30:24

her hand through the prison bars for a handshake

30:27

or something. Guilla shook Viviana's

30:29

hand, gladly clasping it between both

30:31

of his dirty hands. He

30:33

leaned his forehead down as though to touch

30:35

it to the back of Viviana's hand, not

30:38

quite in reverence, but in recognition perhaps

30:40

of her nobility.

30:41

She loves this. And

30:43

she says, I think you and I

30:45

are gonna be really good friends. I mean,

30:48

granted, you might be going to prison after this. Actually,

30:50

I have no idea, but I'll keep in touch.

30:53

I am to be put to the

30:55

fire, a death

30:57

sentence. The trial is a

30:59

mere formality at this point. The

31:03

ignorant are unwavering

31:05

in their misjudgment.

31:07

Oh, you're gonna die, that sucks. Yeah,

31:09

I'm really sorry to hear about that. Yeah,

31:12

that sucks. Well,

31:14

have fun with that. She-

31:17

You know, friends sometimes

31:20

could also unlock cages. For

31:24

other friends, perhaps when

31:26

we arrive at our first destination.

31:30

She thinks to herself and goes,

31:33

you know, you are the first really

31:35

interesting person I've met this entire

31:38

trip. Ouch. Somewhere

31:40

on the ship, Lon felt a splinter. But

31:42

when she looked, there was nothing there.

31:44

You are kind, and no,

31:47

I would not leave such help lacking.

31:50

I would offer you aid in any way you

31:52

like, Viviana. My friend.

31:56

I could tell stories that move mountains

31:59

with my compo-

31:59

I could cast spells for

32:02

you, shape the world for

32:04

you. With time and Penance,

32:08

I could teach you a magic

32:10

few have ever spied. Very,

32:14

um, in shade and go. Okay,

32:18

um, sit tight. I will

32:20

circle back to this conversation. I gotta

32:22

do something about Convo. That dude

32:24

is like on my ass 24-7

32:27

and I'm not sure how to get rid of him.

32:29

Yes, the tall

32:31

watcher. He does not understand,

32:34

but he wears the skin of a painted

32:37

man. A show of the world

32:40

in many and so few of

32:42

its forms. If only he

32:44

could see further, more

32:47

colors and beyond.

32:49

His tattoos are really

32:51

interesting. He's very annoying,

32:53

but he looks really cool. I don't know. Maybe

32:55

I'll talk to him.

32:56

It's a shame he cannot know more.

33:00

But perhaps we can change

33:02

that.

33:03

We could change it? How? Do

33:05

not discount the power of words. For

33:08

just as my words call forth

33:11

magic, they can usher in

33:13

truth. We

33:15

need only have an interesting

33:17

conversation with him. With

33:19

me outside, this cursed

33:22

cage. Then we could

33:25

change his mind.

33:26

Cool. Honey,

33:31

I write down several things

33:34

on my little notepad, you know. Look,

33:36

mysterious religion guy

33:39

wants to be freed. Very

33:42

cool. Also, you have a beard.

33:44

How tall are you?

33:45

I'm... What...

33:48

What system are you using for

33:51

height measurement? Saps?

33:53

Pallets?

33:54

Oh, yeah, I need feet. Sorry. I don't know

33:56

anything else. I'm... I'm

33:59

probably around... I think. Shorter

34:03

than me, okay, and I'm riding. I

34:05

am not unfaithful to my friends. I

34:08

can show you power. Bulu

34:13

ran his hands along the inside

34:15

of the cage, fingers passing over carved runes that began to

34:17

glow briefly. Strong magics

34:19

used to dampen the powers of those trapped

34:21

within. Bulu's eyes flickered,

34:23

reflecting the sparkling stars of the night sky, and

34:25

the light of the

34:28

stars of the night sky, and the

34:30

shadows seeming to envelop him now darker

34:32

than just moments before. You

34:35

must only trust that I

34:36

can see as fair newine

34:39

deems. It is what waits

34:42

in my dreams.

34:44

This bounty I can share.

34:47

Oh yeah, I'm super nice. I'm glad you could

34:49

see that. The eulogy will

34:52

soon end. Please,

34:55

friend, could you do one more thing for

34:57

me? Mm-hmm.

35:01

Can you think really hard?

35:04

Just think this message. Think,

35:07

Ajay is right. His

35:10

suspicions are correct. He should

35:12

follow through with his promises,

35:15

terminally.

35:17

Ajay is right. I'm

35:20

very intrigued. I'm not sure what you're getting

35:23

at, but I'm going to do it because this is very

35:25

exciting for me and also very new for me.

35:28

And I give you my thumbs up.

35:30

And on the way out, can

35:33

I toss Fluffy a weasel? Viviana

35:36

picked up one of the limp weasels from the bucket

35:38

and tossed it to the Alber cage. In

35:41

one swift motion, the Alber happily swallowed,

35:43

with only a few small bones snapping by

35:45

the creature's jaw on the way down.

35:48

Riding down, Fluffy loves

35:50

dead weasels. Very cute, cool

35:52

creature. We'll come back for it. And

35:54

then I take my leaf.

35:56

Back on deck, the funeral had

35:58

dispersed and we're back. returned. The

36:01

sails were filled with Gallusks' magics and

36:04

the willow continued on her way toward the sunken

36:06

bulwark.

36:07

A bit later I approached Lady Viviana

36:10

and I asked her, Hey,

36:12

why weren't you at the funeral? Oh you

36:15

know I have never

36:17

been on a ship before, and

36:19

I just felt so seasick. I was

36:22

resting. Okay, DM,

36:25

I want to roll for insights. Uh,

36:28

five. Yeah, the ocean,

36:30

the waves, you know, I never really

36:33

like, you know, left my family

36:35

house that much. This is all very new to

36:37

me, you must understand. Sure,

36:40

so did you stay in our chambers? Yeah,

36:42

just resting. I see,

36:45

I see. Well, here's a trick

36:47

that I learned from, you know, growing up in the mountains

36:49

that I got home, that you

36:51

can press this,

36:53

you know, like this point right here. We

36:55

call it acupuncture. That

36:57

you can press this point here on your wrist right

36:59

here. Yeah, it's gonna help with seasickness.

37:02

This is what my grandma taught me, you

37:04

can try if you want. Oh, that

37:07

is so kind of you, Lon.

37:09

Thank you so much. Viviana

37:12

does not want to have you having this conversation,

37:14

so she she does it. She presses

37:17

the point on her wrist and goes,

37:19

wow, I actually

37:21

feel a little better, thank

37:23

you. Yeah, yeah, no worries.

37:26

So did you catch sight of the sea

37:28

sirens last night? Unfortunately,

37:30

no. I guess they're just a myth after

37:32

all. I mean, like, they probably tell stories

37:35

to scare us off, right? There's no

37:37

way things like that actually exist. But

37:39

why do you think they need to scare us off?

37:42

What's the cause of it in the first place?

37:45

I'm not sure. Maybe they mistook some

37:47

sharks eating and taking people

37:50

out of sirens? I don't know.

37:52

Yeah, that could be it. You're absolutely

37:54

right. And the seas are so vast,

37:56

there was never any surety that we will find

37:58

them.

37:59

Might I ask the loyal, the

38:02

royal, Lady Viviana, what

38:04

is your destination or pursuit on this journey?

38:08

Honestly,

38:10

I just wanted to get out of the house. You

38:12

must know how it is. I mean, you seem pretty noble

38:14

yourself to Stay

38:17

inside all day, not exploring

38:20

the world, you know? Well, yeah,

38:22

well, that is very true. But to

38:25

be quite frank, I actually am on a mission. And

38:28

I want you to be the first one to know that

38:31

I am on a mission to recruit as many, I

38:33

want to say, followers, but People

38:37

with the same ideal in mind to follow

38:39

me into a war for peace and

38:42

justice and ideals that all

38:44

living beings should have equal freedom. Wouldn't

38:47

you agree, Lady Viviana?

38:49

I look at her with a very straight face, put

38:51

both my hands on her shoulder, put on a serious

38:54

face, and ask, Are you a cult? Are you starting

38:57

a cult? Technically,

39:00

no. But we do have

39:03

rituals, we do have our own religions.

39:05

If that is what you're asking, no,

39:08

actually, we do have our own

39:10

country, per se, our own kingdom, per se. Oh!

39:13

We have our own cult, sure. Is this

39:16

that, you know, certain other kingdoms are trying to

39:18

oppress the living, our

39:19

presence and freedom, if you know what I'm saying. Yeah,

39:22

I think I know what you're saying, this all sounds very

39:24

familiar to the other guy. You know, I have

39:27

someone I could introduce you to, if you'd like. Oh,

39:29

really? Is that one of your, um,

39:32

siblings, maybe? One of your noble

39:34

family members? Someone with an

39:36

army, perhaps? No, I fucking

39:39

hate my sister. Um, no,

39:41

this guy, he seems like right

39:43

up your alley, Lon, the whole, uh, religion

39:46

thing? I think we should all gather together and

39:48

discuss this, because

39:49

this is exciting. Oh, really?

39:51

That would be very, very kind of you.

39:53

I need all the resources

39:55

I can get, you know, fighting to free my homeland

39:58

and all that. Of course, yes.

39:59

Freedom love that shit freedom.

40:02

Yeah, I'm totally on board with you. Yeah,

40:05

then I look at her and I press the

40:07

spot on my wrist again Yeah, it

40:09

feels so much better Feeling

40:12

good Thank you for

40:14

allowing me to impart my secret to you. Of

40:17

course, of course and Lon

40:19

really happy with what just transpired leaves

40:21

lady Viviana be because she doesn't want to

40:23

be a burden anymore And she feels like she just

40:26

took a big step forward finding an actual

40:28

ally for her

40:29

people Thank you. Thank

40:31

you again. Yeah, I just call

40:33

out after her. Yeah, what are friends for? Earlier

40:37

that morning eyes glinting from the shadows

40:39

of the cargo hold the tall form

40:42

of the ancillary half-orc Aje organ

40:44

pressed to the wooden hull behind the

40:46

cover of high stacked crates

40:49

He did not wish to interrupt the morning of the crew

40:51

and had also thought to use the funeral

40:53

as an opportunity To learn more about the

40:56

strange vessel of wood and iron.

40:58

He found himself traveling on He

41:00

had watched in quiet interest as lady blood

41:02

chambers spoke with Ola Keen

41:05

and not to intervene but only to listen observe

41:08

Whether Viviana or Ola knew of his presence

41:11

was a little consequence. He had

41:13

nothing to hide

41:14

Aje is so used

41:16

to being in control of every element

41:18

of his surroundings as a leader and as a hunter

41:20

He knows that predators become prey

41:23

when they don't fully understand the lay of the land so

41:26

he's gonna try and process whether there's a link between

41:28

something that he read earlier in the book and This

41:31

stranger that's on board because it feels

41:34

like they could be and not only that as a

41:36

Absolutely wants to see if there's something inside this

41:39

box because seeing this strange box

41:41

now hearing the murmurs Among the

41:43

crew after

41:44

dinner. There's just one too many things

41:46

that Aje doesn't know and that really unsells

41:48

him hence Why I think he's gonna do something

41:50

a little bit out of character that might potentially

41:53

break the trust of his hosts Aje

41:55

had heard the name of the god fernuine of

41:58

which he knew little and yet he had

41:59

see in the otherworldly depth Oolah's eyes.

42:03

Aje ran the man's name across his memory.

42:05

Oolah as a time-worn saint. Oolah

42:09

underlies all and yet he

42:11

could think of nothing. The book of Vernaskan

42:13

myths spoke very little of fernowine

42:16

and nothing of such saints. Aje

42:18

with the support and knowledge of his ancestors

42:21

wants to try and look back further in his memory

42:23

like almost a collective memory.

42:25

A religion check was required, this

42:27

time with advantage, as the spirits

42:29

in Aje's mind conversed, bringing

42:32

back memories long lost. Okay

42:34

that's a total of 19. He knows enough about

42:38

these Tarelian gods to recognise fernowine's

42:40

name, the Grand Creator, and the reoccurring

42:42

pattern within many pantheons. Fernowine

42:45

is often referred to within the same

42:47

groups as Nel'deche, whose island we will

42:50

reach soon, Bahoka, the deity of death,

42:52

and his own god, the Allhunter,

42:54

Altigan. Yet reaching deeper

42:57

through his ancestors memories, Aje

42:59

can only recall that fernowine valued creation

43:01

but not life. The creatures,

43:04

the stars, the colours of magic, and

43:06

all of the strange things that turn

43:08

the world. But boundless creation,

43:11

in the sense of what can exist,

43:13

what could exist, is by

43:15

nature, chaotic. He

43:17

remembers that the reason his people did not

43:19

give fernowine heed was that this

43:22

creator did not care about their creations, only

43:24

the act of manifestation. They would consume

43:27

a fertile valley to spark the first inferno,

43:30

consume Dylaria to create

43:32

undeath, and their endless will

43:34

to create was opposed only by the god

43:36

of balance and order, Rellir. This

43:39

he read in a book that Rellir was also the

43:41

father of Raive, and the creator

43:43

of elves and the father of Bahoka, the

43:45

god of death, because death itself

43:48

is an ordering.

43:50

Interesting. Knowing

43:52

this, Aje is going to take an opportunity to approach the box.

43:55

I want to make sure that I'm not transporting anything that could

43:57

potentially blow up or something. Some...

43:59

kind of unstable magic. With

44:02

no one left in the room to save the prisoners

44:04

who were out of sight behind a row of cargo, none

44:07

could stop Ajay from opening the small crate.

44:10

After triple-checking that the box itself is not trapped

44:12

and fully safe to open, Ajay will

44:14

open it.

44:16

The seal was simple. No lock,

44:19

no trick. Merely a nail in every

44:21

corner of the lid. With Ajay's

44:24

strength, it came off with

44:24

news. Within

44:27

rested a small, delicate figurine. Card

44:30

from some kind of glistening bone. Or

44:32

worse. Its visage held

44:35

a strange, almost crazed appearance.

44:38

And when Ajay held it up momentarily to the

44:40

small light of the Hold's lantern, he

44:42

could see that it had an almost pearlescent shine

44:44

to it. Something about it

44:46

looked familiar.

44:47

Hmm, some kind

44:50

of idol. And

44:52

I would like to make a history check to recognize

44:55

the art style. Nice!

44:58

It looks like a carving style of the southern

45:00

jensler. What the angles and

45:02

rough geometrics. From

45:05

history and, um, maybe

45:07

religion, Ajay knows that jensler

45:10

has lots of cultures with their own,

45:13

uh, localized deities. Which

45:16

are worshipped along

45:17

with the larger scale deities, but I

45:20

don't know which local deity this is supposed

45:22

to be since there are so many. I think,

45:25

before I put it back, I would like to see

45:27

if I can try and find out what material it's made

45:29

out of just in case I should run into that material again

45:32

might help me figure out where it's from. Because

45:34

I don't think I can bring myself to steal it. As

45:36

much as I want to, as much as I want

45:38

to, I'm like, oh

45:41

this sounds like, this is such a bad idea.

45:44

Ajay took time to carefully turn the carved

45:47

idol over in his hands, running

45:49

his thumb over the carved face. The

45:52

deep set eyes, the sharp

45:54

serrated teeth. Ajay's

45:57

ancestors pulled back, not

45:59

wishing to.

45:59

be near it, and they whispered

46:02

winds of warning. A'jeh,

46:05

never have you encountered the beautiful

46:07

creature of legend that moved through the

46:10

lands of mortals as guardians

46:12

and protectors. But now,

46:15

you hold what is most precious to

46:17

them.

46:18

And with a stone in his gut, A'jeh

46:21

knew that what he held in his hands was crafted

46:25

from unicorn ivory.

46:27

Wow, that is

46:30

very interesting. Perhaps

46:33

A'jeh will take this. A'jeh

46:36

took leave of the cargo hold, but not

46:39

before slipping the idol into his pocket and resealing

46:41

the small crate. The idol,

46:44

for all its ill will and unseen power,

46:46

now followed him. And his ancestors

46:50

kept their distance.
