Today is Monday, June 10, 2024.

Thousands of paddlers gear up for the annual Tour de Coal kayak trip…See that cute little fawn in the field? The WVDNR reminds folks to look, but don’t touch--Leave young wildlife alone…and  check out some cabin parks that will make your fishing trip feel like Almost Heaven…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WCHS-TV – An annual boat launch aimed at beautifying a popular West Virginia waterway is set to make a splash later this month.

The 2024 Tour de Coal is set for Saturday, June 15 as an estimated 2,000 paddlers will shove off from Meadowood Park starting at 8 a.m., according to a news release from the Coal River Group.

The event has become the largest flatwater kayak event in the country and promotes water quality and outdoor recreation in southern West Virginia.

#2 – From WTRF-TV – With the arrival of spring weather and the emergence of young wildlife, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources reminds people that possessing wildlife without a permit is illegal and that handling wild animals can spread disease and parasites that can be fatal.

Picking up, touching or even getting close to young wildlife can greatly increase the chance of the animal being harmed because predators are often attracted to the scent humans leave behind. Handling wildlife can also harm humans, as contact increases the risk of transmitting viral diseases and parasites, such as rabies, Lyme disease, roundworms and ticks.

When it comes to young wildlife, it’s best to admire from a distance, officials say.
