Welcome to the debut episode of the Conflict Management Space Podcast brought to you by Dr. Juan Diaz-Prinz. Each episode tackles a theme for helping individuals solve conflicts sustainably. Today’s episode is an adaptation of his lecture on the stereotypes of men and women in negotiation for his course on Gender, Diversity and Conflict with the University Hertie School of Governance.
We begin with an examination of how gender manifests itself in negotiations, specifically, by looking at existing stereotypes, reviewing dominant schools of thought regarding gender and negotiation, and considering the historical context of rectifying gender in the topic of negotiation.
In our discussion of fairness, we take a look at the realities of gendered negotiations and the way men and women treat others as well as themselves in relation to gender expectations. We discuss how men and women negotiate and think critically about negotiation based on expectations of others as well as themselves.
We conclude this episode with suggestions and advice for accomplishing successful negotiations in the context of gender issues as well as mitigating the impact of gender in our own negotiations.
