“The Nigerian culture doesn’t like to prevent, we like to diagnose and treat”.

Fibroids affect black women predominantly and disproportionately.

Another name for fibroid is leiomyoma - A benign smooth muscle tumor that occurs in women of reproductive age and unfortunately especially the black woman because they are so fertile. So fibroid kind of go gangster especially for women in Nigeria.
Fibroids are benign, meaning it’s not cancer and it’s the most common tumor of the female genital urinary tract.

There are different treatments available for fibroids. The biggest available in Nigeria before now was surgery- A myomectomy or a hysterectomy. A myomectomy is when you cut off the fibroid and leave the uterus in place whilst the hysterectomy is when you take off the uterus completely.

Interventional radiology has a treatment called uterine fibroid embolisation which came to be about 25 to 30 years ago and been done for that long in The US and Europe. It is a procedure where a doctor penetrates the artery in the wrist or the artery in the groin to connect to the uterine artery and deposits particles that function by blocking off blood flows to the fibroid as these vessels are connected all over the body.  Fibroids bleed because they love blood, they basically suck up all the blood within the uterus. If the blood flow is blocked, these fibroids shrink and eventually dies.

Fibroids embolisation is not for every woman, which is why it is important to evaluate every woman as some women do need to go to surgery in which case fibroid embolisation is done to shrink the tumor before surgery.
One of the major causes of anaemia is fibroid. Embolisation can decrease bleeding up to 85 - 95 percent.

The procedure for embolisation basically takes about thirty minutes for the easy cases and an hour fifteen minutes for really hard cases. It is a minimally evasive procedure and one can almost immediately resume normal life activities.

The number of fibroids doesn’t matter in performing embolisation as every fibroid In the uterus can be treated at the same time which is not applicable to a myomectomy.

It cost about 1.7 million Naira on the average to have an embolisation done and embolisation doesn’t alter the menstrual cycle.
