All right. Good morning.

0:26

How are you guys?

0:29

I love that you guys are here.

0:31

I love being here. I love being here. I hope you guys enjoy being together.

0:37

I don't know if you think about it much, but, Look around.

0:40

Look around at the people around you. Right.

0:43

This is going to be part of the gang that we're going to be spending

0:45

like the rest of eternity with. Right.

0:49

So this is a pretty good group. You know, this is what we you know, I enjoy that

0:53

joy seeing you guys each week and just spending time together.

0:56

Hey, before we get started, before we get into our scripture

1:00

for today, I want to begin this morning with a story.

1:05

And our story begins with three words.

1:08

The three words in the beginning.

1:11

Now, three times in, in the story of

1:14

Scripture, the story of the Bible, three times we come across

1:17

as three words in the beginning. The first time, once it's in the beginning of creation,

1:22

at the beginning of Genesis where it tells, it

1:25

tells about how our creator God created us

1:28

and everything else that we know and then that's how our story begins.

1:32

The second time we find this is in the beginning of the story of Jesus in the book of John,

1:38

where it tells about how our Savior God came to us to rescue us,

1:42

but he came also so that he might make himself known to us.

1:46

He became visible to us and so that we might know him, truly know him.

1:51

Amen. Third time

1:53

is a place that many people don't know, but it's in the.

1:56

Our passage for today is in the book of First John,

1:59

where John again the same one who wrote the gospel.

2:02

He is an eyewitness of Jesus. And he he remembers all this, this thing, and he's

2:07

carrying this, this in this story with them.

2:10

And he's reminding us of our invitation and into this new creation

2:15

that God has offered to us this new creation called eternal life.

2:20

And we're going to be looking at that today.

2:24

we've been in a series

2:26

last several weeks on on spiritual gifts, but we're going to we're going

2:30

to kind of find an anchor point today for that.

2:34

for that whole topic and some really important I think I went away last week.

2:39

There were some things that struck me and I wanted to touch on those today.

2:43

Now, this story begins with the words in the beginning,

2:46

because in the beginning, God was always he was already there.

2:51

He was already there. The same as he's going to be there long after the end

2:55

of what we know as time and space and the same way.

2:59

And we need to remember this the same way that he is there in every when

3:03

and where and how and why that happens between the beginning and the end.

3:07

Right? And we need to know that for our lives, because God, God is with us.

3:12

He's with us today. He's with us in our questions and in our wonderings.

3:18

And the thing that he wants us to know about him in all that time,

3:22

the thing he wants us to know is that he is not this solo, stand alone God.

3:26

You know this God who's angry and sitting up on the top

3:30

of some heavenly mountain, you know, hurling thunderbolts,

3:33

trying to get rid of all the other kind of rival gods and not knowing

3:37

what quite what to do with this headache that he calls human beings.

3:41

Right?

3:43

That's not the God he wants us to know. No, our story starts out and he says, in the beginning was this God,

3:49

and this God was the father and the son, and the Holy Spirit.

3:53

And he wants us to know that you know what? From from eternity past to eternity future.

3:58

The father loves the son and loves the spirit,

4:03

and the son loves the father,

4:05

and loves the spirit, and the spirit loves the father, and loves the son,

4:11

and and that them together.

4:14

That was enough.

4:17

That was enough. Their love was enough.

4:20

They didn't need anything else. Because in that love, that love is found, joy is found peace

4:25

and is found this, this kind, this and this goodness.

4:28

And there's found a rest and a settled ness.

4:31

And so God didn't need anything else,

4:35

but it was out of that.

4:37

Not needing anything else. It was out of that fullness that he then determined to create

4:44

is out of that fullness that he created.

4:46

And he created a world, yes. But more importantly, he wanted to create, to bring into being a creation

4:53

that then he could invite into that same life,

4:57

in that same fullness,

4:59

into that that place of rest, in peace and and enough.

5:05

And he invited he wanted to invite that creation.

5:08

So so our creator God, father, son, Holy Spirit,

5:12

he created a space for us first, and then he created us,

5:16

and he placed us in that space, and he invited us to walk with him while we lived in that space.

5:21

He invited us to walk with him in that life and experience that life.

5:25

But instead of choosing that life, we chose a different lie, right?

5:30

I mean, the two are really close. There's one

5:32

one letter that separates those words, but there's a vast world of difference.

5:38

And we chose the lie. The lie that he wasn't enough,

5:41

the lie that this life that he offered wasn't enough.

5:44

The lie that maybe somehow this God who created us with the one intent,

5:49

the sole purpose of bringing us into the fullness of the life that he knew

5:53

and experience that God, that somehow he was holding out on us.

5:58

And the lie that somehow there was more to be found about life

6:04

and of life apart from the God of life.

6:06

And there was to be found in him.

6:10

And so we went away. We left him, and we tried to be enough for ourselves.

6:15

And many of us have lived those lives who tried to be enough for ourselves.

6:20

And it's then that we discover the meaning of words like loneliness,

6:25

fear, hatred, distrust, envy,

6:28

jealousy, brokenness,

6:31

violence, pride, and poverty.

6:36

Because our lives are never enough.

6:40

We aren't created to be enough, and sometimes we try

6:43

and pull people into make it enough or stuff into making enough.

6:46

But it's never enough because we were created to be invited

6:51

into the life of God,

6:54

the only life that will ever be enough.

6:57

That was the purpose of creation.

7:02

But without him, there's always something missing.

7:05

But then, thanks be to God.

7:08

Because this God who doesn't sit apart from us,

7:12

who doesn't complain about what a nuisance we are, this God

7:15

who loves within just a community of the three,

7:19

but also this love, the that wanted to spill over

7:21

and bring us into this God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

7:25

He wasn't satisfied that his creation would be somehow kept separate

7:29

from this invitation that he had made to us of life.

7:35

And so this God came.

7:37

He came like a shepherd to find us.

7:40

He came like a doctor to heal us. But most of all, he came like a son in the power of the spirit

7:46

to make known to us the love of the father,

7:49

the very love that had initiated and compelled our creation.

8:00

You guys, that's the thing

8:03

that when we stand and we're we're going to read this passage out of first John.

8:08

But that's the thing that John, an eyewitness of Jesus,

8:12

a follower of Jesus in the first century, that's the thing that John couldn't

8:16

get out of his mind and out of his heart until the day that he died.

8:20

And so every time he'd start writing, he'd always go back and he'd say,

8:25

in the beginning,

8:27

in the beginning, remember, do you remember the beginning?

8:32

Do you remember why God even started this thing?

8:36

And the love that initiated the work that we saw in the life that we saw in Jesus?

8:40

So with that story in mind, with that beginning in mind, I want us to stand.

8:47

We're going to read the words that John wrote in first John one one through three,

8:52

and listen to this invitation, listen to this passion that he has,

8:57

that which was from the beginning,

9:00

that which was in the beginning,

9:03

which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have examined,

9:08

which we have even touched with our hands.

9:12

I'm talking about God's message of life,

9:16

that life was revealed to us and we have seen

9:20

and now we testify and proclaim to you

9:23

eternal life, which the God which

9:27

was with the father and was revealed to us, and we proclaim to you

9:31

what we have seen and what we have heard, so that you might

9:35

share in it with us.

9:38

For we share in it with the father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

9:46

You guys, we've been serious the past couple weeks on

9:48

on spiritual gifts.

9:52

But last week it struck me that, you know, there is only one context

9:57

that those gifts make sense. If there's only one context

10:01

that the Spirit of God who gives those gifts makes sense in.

10:06

And there's only one context that the the community of the people of God

10:10

called the church that benefit by those gifts makes sense.

10:16

And that's in the context of this living, this vital, this real relationship

10:22

of being drawn into the very life of the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit,

10:26

and then living a life that that reflects that same kind of love

10:31

and the same kind of reality that they have been sharing from eternity past.

10:36

It will share into eternity future.

10:39

So the only context this makes sense in.

10:43

And so these gifts that we talk about, the gifts of spirit,

10:46

they emerge out of that that's where they find their their source.

10:49

That's where they find their character, where they find their nature.

10:52

That's where they find their purpose.

10:56

So as we talk about gifts, it's important that we go back to the beginning.

11:00

We go back to that foundation, we go back to the base and we say, okay, so what is this whole thing?

11:05

What is this really? What is it about? Where does it begin?

11:11

This morning's message is titled in the beginning.

11:14

Let's pray. Father,

11:17

in the course of our lives,

11:20

Oh, God. First, I just want to thank you.

11:23

You're here. You're here right now.

11:28

You have

11:31

from before time began,

11:33

your desire and all of creation was that we would know you,

11:39

that we would come into being and have the capacity and the ability that you have woven

11:44

into us in creation to know you

11:48

and to be brought into this life. And you've brought us there through Jesus.

11:52

You've brought us there,

11:54

and you're constantly making yourself

11:56

known to us in the world we live in.

12:00

And the beauty that surrounds us, that it says just it just shouts with your

12:05

your voice, the line that goes.

12:09

Out even in the heavens just shouts your.

12:13

You're praising who you are.

12:16

And in the things that we see, we we see glimpses we get.

12:19

We get touched by something that's behind that.

12:22

Something that's invisible. Something we can't see.

12:25

But this is a reality that all of this

12:29

stands on. That's you.

12:32

That's you, father, son and Holy Spirit.

12:35

The community that we call God,

12:39

the One God, three persons.

12:43

Is now reaching out in time and space to invite us

12:46

and to draw us into that same life, that same experience, that same community,

12:52

that we might know how to love you.

12:56

And that we might know how to love each other the way that you love.

13:04

So, God, this morning there's so much that can clutter our minds.

13:06

There's so much we can bring in.

13:11

Bring in from a world that's shaped by the lie that you don't exist.

13:15

That there was no purpose.

13:17

That there was no community. There was no communion.

13:20

There was no God. There was no there was no father, son, and Holy Spirit.

13:23

There is no there's no purpose to all of this.

13:26

The lie that somehow we just are struggling.

13:28

We're just kind of trying to make it on our own.

13:31

That lie that becomes very empty and very lifeless. God.

13:34

And there's so much of that that just it's almost like when we come in,

13:37

there's like the disciples of Jesus. We just got to wash our feet off.

13:40

We just kind of we've been walking around in it.

13:45

Jesus, we need you to just wash our feet off with your word

13:49

and remind us about the beginning.

13:53

Remind us about the foundation. Remind us about the source and the place where it starts.

13:59

So, father, we're here with open ears and eyes and hearts to hear.

14:04

Hear your voice. Holy spirit, you're here with us.

14:06

So teach us, show us. Reveal.

14:10

Make known. Make Jesus known in this place.

14:16

Father, we pray this.

14:20

So that we might know you.

14:22

That you might be lifted up and honored.

14:24

We pray these things in your name for your glory.

14:28

Father, the name of Jesus, your son, by the power of spirit.

14:32

Amen. Amen. Have a seat.

14:39

So if you think about this story by definition, then

14:43

what does it mean to be a Christian? Christian is one who lives a life of confidence

14:50

and confidence, because we know that God loves us

14:53

and we know that he is not just able, but he's willing.

14:56

He's desiring to use us and to show himself through us.

15:00

We live a life of contentment because we know that whatever comes our ways,

15:04

we know that when we look at it, we can see the hand of God behind it.

15:08

We know that we see the protection of God around us.

15:10

In it we live a life of consciousness, of God's continual presence with us.

15:16

We live to be a Christian and to live a life of compassion

15:20

for those who don't experience this life, because we know that we are all created to to know this life.

15:25

We live a life of death, compelled to do whatever is necessary,

15:30

whatever means are necessary to invite people into this experience

15:35

of this amazing life, this God,

15:37

this community, this communion

15:40

with our creator, Savior, friend, our father, our Lord,

15:46

these. So this is the definition of what it means to be a Christian.

15:50

I mean, this just a bottom line because these are the reflections

15:54

of the character of, of the this life

15:57

of God that we know he was sharing.

16:01

This is kind of the outgrowth of this life that he shared beforehand.

16:04

So to live that life is to live in those ways.

16:07

But but on a weekly basis, right on a daily basis.

16:11

How many of us come to a point, we go, how in the world am I supposed to live

16:16

like that kind of Christian with any kind of consistency, right?

16:20

Because in Iran, when the kids are driving you up the wall, right?

16:25

When your spouse is driving you up the wall, right?

16:29

When when you're you're you can't find your keys

16:32

and you're already late for your class. And, you know, today is test day, right?

16:37

When you've when you've been investing in some client, in some,

16:41

for your company and you've been investing for months and months and months,

16:44

and then out of the blue, for no reason,

16:47

they decide to go a completely different direction.

16:50

And it threatens. It threatens your career.

16:52

It threatens your self esteem. I mean, all of a sudden everything surrounds you.

16:58

Or what about those times when,

17:00

when a friend betrays you, or when that darkness inside of you

17:03

that you wrestle with regularly opens up and threatens to consume you

17:08

with fear or with anxiety, or with depression or with anger,

17:13

or with lust, or with with compulsion or addiction,

17:17

all those things that we deal with because we're broken people

17:21

who have tried to make our way without God, in a world

17:23

that's become broken because we've gotten off track.

17:28

And in those times we say, man, who in the world could ever live like a Christian?

17:33

By that definition, confidence

17:37

and content meant and consciousness of God's presence and compassion

17:42

for who could, who could do that with any kind

17:45

of consistency.

17:49

According to that definition. So we usually settle for lesser kind of definitions, right?

17:54

We usually will alter the definition.

17:57

So it's more attainable. But in doing that what we do is we trade the life

18:01

that God shared, that God has offered, that he has invite us into.

18:05

We trade that for some other kind of a life.

18:08

We trade that for a life of like a religion or a spirituality.

18:13

You know, something that really is it really is life

18:16

less because it's not the life that God intended.

18:20

It's just another form of living that life

18:24

without God trying to be enough in ourselves.

18:28

And so regularly we have to we have to look.

18:31

And God wants us to ask the question, what life

18:34

are you living out of?

18:37

What life are you living out of?

18:40

What life are you anchored to?

18:43

And you find it's the foundation of who you are.

18:46

You know, when I was in high school, we were going on a trip to Disneyland

18:50

with, the group I was in, and, and so we had to raise some money.

18:54

So we did this one fundraiser, and it was called a rock athon.

18:58

Now, rock athon, is where you go, and you ask people who sponsor

19:03

you, you know, to raise. And usually it's just friends and family.

19:05

So they just they would give you the money for the trip.

19:07

But the truth is, you know, you're going to do something to earn it.

19:10

And so they'll give you money to go in the church or in the school gym

19:14

and to stay up all night rocking, rocking chairs.

19:17

So you're rocking all night in the rock a thon to raise money

19:21

for this trip, right? So, we were all there.

19:25

And as, I mean, as exciting as all that sounds,

19:30

you guys will be surprised to know that there are

19:32

some people that were having a hard time staying awake.

19:35

Right? And so they had brought all kinds of different things to try and help them out.

19:39

No, some people brought no dogs. Now, if you don't know what no, those is if you can.

19:44

So you guys remember with some, if you took Red bull

19:48

and you boiled it down to its main ingredients, right?

19:51

And you made it into a pill because it's just basically a shot

19:54

of caffeine and,

19:58

excuse me. And so, they would just they get kind of they get a little bit sleepy

20:04

and they just pop in this, this, caffeine pill.

20:07

And so you'd watch them and they'd be like, they'd be like, groggy, groggy.

20:11

And then for 15 minutes, man, they are they are rocking the night.

20:15

Worth. Right? Is your clue. This is great.

20:17

And they're running around seeing everybody and go,

20:19

guys, you know, 15 minutes. And then, then they hit the that cliff. Right.

20:23

Did you go off and then boom they're gone for two hours.

20:26

You know they're just they're out. They might be gone for them.

20:29

And and what you found was that these pills, they were they get less and less effective

20:34

right over time because in the next time it may be ten minutes.

20:37

And pretty soon you have some you probably feel they're lasting like 30s.

20:41

Right? And they're out.

20:44

How many of you guys have felt at times that your,

20:47

your Christian life is kind of a version of that kind of no, don't buzz right.

20:52

You're just you're trying to pop this God pill

20:54

and there's different forms of it, right? Sometimes it's the force of will pill that we pop in, we go, I'm gonna change.

21:00

I'm going to start going to church, and I'm going to start reading my Bible.

21:04

And I got to start being a better person.

21:06

Right. And sometimes it's that guilt and shame one, you know, where

21:09

you just like.

21:14

I guess if I, I guess I don't want to go to hell. So.

21:20

I better go to church right?

21:24

You guys, that's not the life that God invited us into.

21:29

It's not that life where we these things, that they'll give us a buzz because those things are so short lived.

21:35

You're even the will. I mean, people with this strongest. Will you get to the end of it?

21:40

And then you crash, and then you find that you crash, and then there's this.

21:44

This time that you're just gone. You're out.

21:46

You're out of commission. And it might be weeks.

21:48

It might be months. It might be years.

21:51

And then finally you feel guilty enough to go back.

21:54

Are you feel like, no, I can do this. And you go take another run in it. But it's like that.

21:58

It's like that. No. Those that caffeine pill.

22:02

And that's not what God invited us into.

22:06

What is the life that God intended for us?

22:08

That's not the life. Think about it.

22:11

That's not the life that God shared from eternity past.

22:14

That's not the life that inspired creation so that he could invite others in.

22:18

What a horrible thing to invite people into.

22:21

Okay, I need another, you know, need another God pill, right?

22:27

That's not what he offered to us.

22:29

You guys. Throughout the Bible, we get these pictures that God gives us and and regularly,

22:34

because of the world that we live in, we have a need of protection.

22:37

We have a need of safety. And so God presents himself.

22:39

He shows himself, he gives us these pictures

22:42

where he's this place of safety and refuge.

22:45

Right. So it may be that he says, he is a shelter in the time of storm,

22:50

or he is the the rock that doesn't move the solid,

22:53

or he's this inaccessible height where no one can reach us.

22:58

Or maybe it's it's where he shows us that he is that companion on our side

23:02

and our protector, or he is that father that holds our hands so that when we stumble, we don't fall.

23:09

Or maybe it's that he is that mentor that prepares us,

23:12

that prepares us for the battles and the challenges that are to come.

23:16

But one thing that you notice in all these passages, when you read Scripture

23:20

and you read this description of God is our as our protector, as our refuge.

23:27

And this especially comes out at the end of of Matthew, where Jesus

23:30

says, you know, he's like this rock that we build our house on to,

23:35

but you find that when he says, build your house and anchor

23:37

it to the rock, he doesn't say, wait till the storm comes

23:40

and then try and get out there and build your house on the rock.

23:45

Right? He doesn't say, wait till the enemy is swooping in

23:49

through and crashing your borders, and then try and set up

23:52

that place of refuge and find that place in me.

23:56

Instead, he says to us, things like,

23:59

abide in me, right?

24:01

Remain in me. Set up your home in me, your dwelling place, your home and base.

24:08

Because he doesn't. He wants to be our default.

24:11

He wants to be that place we we go every single day of our lives.

24:15

He wants to be that. That places our home base, not that storm shelter, you know.

24:20

Did you guys ever grow up with storm shelters? Or maybe it was the cellar of your house

24:24

and you go down there and it's just cobwebs or every.

24:26

It's creepy, right? It's dark. It's damp because nobody's down there most of the time.

24:33

Right. And in between emergencies, nobody bothers.

24:36

The only thing that could drive you into a storm shelter

24:39

with all this creepiness would be the fact that a tornado's coming.

24:44

But God doesn't want to be that storm shelter that gets no use.

24:47

He wants to be our home,

24:49

because that life that he has offered us is the life that he he offers us.

24:53

He gives us so that we can live in it,

24:57

and then we can experience the life that he has known, that he has enjoyed.

25:01

He offers it to us because he lives this life, right?

25:06

He loves this life where he is.

25:08

The father loves the son in the spirit, in the son loves

25:11

the father and the spirit, and the spirit is loving the father and the son.

25:15

And where there's this kindness in this grace and this joy, this companionship, he loves that

25:22

he's saying, so abide in me, live in me.

25:27

And he says, if you'll do that, says, two things will happen.

25:30

One thing that will happen is that as you even in the good times,

25:34

in the good times, you'll find that you'll grow in depth

25:37

of understanding, of knowing him,

25:40

of knowing him,

25:43

and also experiencing this life and this contentment,

25:47

this satisfaction, this rest, this joy.

25:49

It will grow in depth

25:52

as you spend time with him.

25:55

The second thing that will happen

25:57

is that you will experience a deepening

26:00

and greater confidence and peace, even when the hard times come.

26:06

That if you if if the the roots go down during the good season,

26:11

you can bet that when the storm hits, it's not going to topple over.

26:15

The house isn't going to get washed off the rock because the foundation is strong enough.

26:20

It's good enough. And those things,

26:24

they're not great enough to even touch the life,

26:28

to touch the community, to touch the protection

26:32

and the the grace that there is

26:36

within this relationship with the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit.

26:41

And that he's brought us into

26:44

to share with each other.

26:49

You know, a verse I remember my dad, often

26:51

quoting throughout my life is found in Isaiah 26 three.

26:56

It's you will keep him in perfect peace,

26:59

whose mind is stayed fixed on you

27:03

because he trusts in you.

27:07

And I remember when I was a senior in high school

27:09

and we had a house fire, and we're standing there watching,

27:12

and it was in the garage and it looked like the whole house was going up.

27:15

The fire spread across the whole front.

27:17

It was just it looked like the house was consumed.

27:19

Thankfully it wasn't. But standing out there, you wouldn't have known any different

27:23

because there were flames everywhere. They seemed to be pouring out of everywhere in the house.

27:28

And after it was over, after it was

27:31

over, they went and they they kind of started

27:35

pressing in some questions to my mom and dad,

27:38

you know, asking them if they had anything to do with this thing

27:41

because, because as they were as this house

27:45

seemed to be completely engulfed in flames, they were just standing out in the, in the, in the cul de sac where we lived,

27:51

holding hands and just watching what looked like our whole lives, going up in flames

27:57

with a calm that they seemed to think was a little too great

28:01

for someone who's watching their whole life, burned to the ground.

28:07

And I was watching. Then I was like, you know,

28:11

I knew where it came from

28:13

because in the good times, God had been their shelter.

28:16

They hadn't just run to God in that moment,

28:20

they were able to stand up there and say, well, we have all the things that matter the most.

28:26

He gave us everything that we have.

28:29

If he wants to give us more, he'll get it to us.

28:31

If we don't need it, it's gone.

28:34

And there was just calm because their life wasn't found in that stuff.

28:38

It life wasn't found in that moment. Their life was found in him and he kept them in perfect peace,

28:45

whose minds were stayed on him because they were trusting in him.

28:55

Why do we spend time each day?

28:57

Why do we spend time each day? Why do we take time? Why do we make time?

29:01

What do you invest time each day in study in God's Word

29:05

so that we might know it better?

29:07

Why do we take time each day? Why do we make time each day to just be with God

29:13

and not just lay out for him the list of things that we have,

29:16

but listen for him to see if he has things to speak,

29:20

to say to us, and ways to guide us. Why?

29:23

Why do we take time to fill our minds with God's Word

29:27

and to to memorize, to train our minds, to think his thoughts after him?

29:31

Why do we gather with his people on times like this?

29:35

So that we can just give to him the praise that he deserves?

29:39

And remember, remember what he has done

29:43

and be reminded of who he is.

29:46

Why do we take time to be with each other and invest time in the lives

29:50

of other people that we don't even know sometime,

29:53

but we gather with God's people, we go out and we say, you know what?

29:56

There's something better they need to experience. Why?

30:01

Why is it consider something better? Why do they need experience?

30:05

Why do we need to be involved in that at all?

30:09

Because we know that establishing

30:12

our life in God,

30:14

our life in this father, Son and Holy Spirit

30:18

and our life, establishing ourselves in the life that he has given to us.

30:23

And he's offered to us that life that we will experience from now into eternity.

30:28

We know that investing that does two things.

30:33

One, it reminds us of who we really are.

30:35

It reminds us of the life. It tells us of the life

30:38

that we were really called to and we were meant for and created for.

30:42

But two, that when the things of this life do come crashing against

30:46

us, we'll know what's solid and what won't shake.

30:51

We'll know.

30:54

We will be in perfect peace, because our minds will be fixed on him.

30:58

Because we will trust in him.

31:01

Rest doesn't matter. It seems like it matter doesn't seem like it matters, right?

31:06

Doesn't it? Doesn't it get overwhelming at times?

31:09

You guys, church seems like it matters, right?

31:13

Sure seems like this one is going to take me out.

31:21

But yet he invites us into this place of safety.

31:24

It's nothing less than himself,

31:27

nothing less than

31:30

this life, this community.

31:32

That was before time began and will last long after the end of it.

31:37

You guys, the gifts and callings of the spirit

31:40

are a part of that life, right?

31:43

When we talk about spiritual gifts,

31:45

we're not talking about things that we just put on for a moment.

31:49

And they give us a buzz for a time, and then we leave and we live our real lives.

31:53

We're not talking about that. We're talking about something that emerges

31:56

out of the life that we know God has called us into,

32:00

and that he has made available to us in Jesus Christ.

32:04

Outside of that context. They don't they don't make any sense outside of the context.

32:10

This community of people doesn't make any sense.

32:15

But we are the people of God who have been called into the life of God

32:19

for the purposes of God, and he equips us to

32:22

make not just him known,

32:25

but to make that life known among us.

32:28

Amen. So I want to I want to close I want to just give you three questions,

32:33

three questions for maybe three different sets of people

32:37

who might be in here this morning. The first question is this are there?

32:41

There is of you. Any of those of you who are here who don't know

32:46

this of God, not that God you may have heard of a God

32:51

you may have, I mean, but you don't know that God.

32:55

You don't know that life. Maybe you've never heard that that kind of life was even available.

33:01

That's when he turned it on. You know, this eternal life is

33:05

you don't know that. You didn't know that God had invited you into that kind of sharing of life

33:11

with him and sharing of life with each other.

33:16

So the question is, you know,

33:19

here we are in all of creation. It says that all of creation, the other whole purpose of it

33:25

was to get you to this place so that you might hear the invitation

33:28

of God to be brought into that life,

33:32

not to have a better life here, not to make everything go perfect here,

33:36

not to stop all the storms, but to be brought into that life

33:39

that is the shelter from the storms

33:42

that that communion with, with him and with those he loves, that communion

33:47

that becomes that protection from the things that all that the world

33:51

can throw at us, all that brokenness can throw at us.

33:56

And that is all about it's all about relationship is it's not about religion.

34:01

It's not about getting a better list of rules

34:03

that will help you live a better and more successful life.

34:06

It's not about that. It's not about keeping yourself with this weight of of guilt.

34:12

that that will make you do better.

34:16

But will make you do better in this isolation

34:19

where you go to your dying day trying to impress and and,

34:24

somehow gain the favor of this God and earn

34:28

this God's love, who is offered it to us freely.

34:34

So here we are with the father.

34:38

The father. He loves the son, and he loves the spirit.

34:41

But he's also saying he loves you, right?

34:44

And the son, he came to die because he loves the father

34:48

and he loves the spirit. But he also wanted you to know he loves you

34:53

and the spirit. He's here and he equips his church. Why?

34:56

Because he loves the father and he loves a son.

35:00

But he also wants you to know he loves you.

35:03

He loves you. They love you enough to want to pull us in us enough.

35:07

They want to pull us in to this.

35:10

This life is offering, this life that they have known.

35:15

So the question for you this morning is if you haven't known that life,

35:18

if you haven't known that God, if you haven't even known that invitation

35:22

that was yours.

35:25

Are you willing to take do you

35:28

do you desire, will you take

35:31

that invitation

35:33

that he is offering you this morning?

35:35

Because it really is just a matter of he is offered.

35:39

It is turning to him and saying, God don't know what all this means.

35:46

But yeah,

35:48

I want to say yes to your invitation to be part of

35:52

your life, your community, the purpose of everything.

35:57

Yeah.

35:59

That's you. And I encourage you to just have that simple,

36:03

honest conversation with God.

36:05

I'm not going to say that all sin. You're going to understand everything about it.

36:09

It's like being born, right? He started. I was a kid.

36:12

I was talking the other day about flailing around, and then you go,

36:15

wow, that's my right there. Times in your Christian life you're going to be going along.

36:18

You go, oh, that's me, right?

36:21

And you're going to grow up like every hand. You're going to learn more about this life and you're going to grow into it.

36:25

But you begin at the point where you just say, yeah, God, that's what I want.

36:32

That's out there. That's what I want.

36:37

Second, maybe there's some of you here.

36:40

Are there those of you who are here that.

36:43

Yeah, you've heard this guy. Do you know this thing?

36:45

But you're not you're not living in that life, right?

36:49

You're you're kind of holding on to Jesus, but you're still trying to still trying

36:53

to make this life part work,

36:55

this part where you can you can be enough for yourself

36:58

even though you have the backup plan with Jesus.

37:01

He's your storm shelter, right? But he's not your home.

37:08

And again, I can't tell you all the details of what that means, but

37:13

you're not experiencing life, you're not experiencing,

37:16

and you're not going to grow in the joy and the depth of your knowledge of God.

37:20

And you're not going to grow in the the life that he intended, that

37:24

he created you for, designed you for, brought you into being to know

37:30

you're not going to know that if you're not living in it.

37:35

So the question for you is, is, are you willing to make

37:40

really to make God

37:43

your default instead of just this,

37:45

this option?

37:50

What will it take? Well, it will take it'll take investment

37:53

of some of your time and some of your effort and and it'll take

37:56

where you intentionally carve out time to be with God and listen

38:00

and to spend time with him and to be in his word.

38:02

It will take letting go of some of the worry and believing that man. God.

38:08

If I anchor into this, he says, seek first the kingdom and his righteousness

38:12

and all this other stuff that worries you so much,

38:15

he'll be taking care of it.

38:19

If you choose to follow him, it doesn't mean that things are going to get perfect, but life will not have to crush you.

38:27

So are you willing to to make God your default?

38:30

Because that too. That's a pretty simple switch.

38:33

It's a he's given us this thing called a will, and he says, just decide.

38:38

Make the decision to make him your Lord, your Savior,

38:42

your default, your home base, and to enter into the life.

38:46

Because, you know, if you don't,

38:51

you're not experiencing you're not experienced salvation.

38:53

It's not me. I'm not saying that you're not going to be saved. I don't know, that's up to you.

38:57

Just between what's ever gone between you and God.

38:59

But you're not experiencing the life now that he intended you to experience,

39:04

which is like a preview of what's to come,

39:07

of the fullness of what's to come.

39:11

So ask yourself, you know what? What do you need to do?

39:15

Are you willing to take his invitation to enter fully into this life?

39:21

You guys? one of the things that prompted this last week, as I was thinking and I was,

39:28

I've had conversations with people that have been have come through even the churches that I've pastored in.

39:34

And, they've gone out

39:37

and they've abandoned kind of their faith, their Christianity.

39:40

They just jettisoned the whole thing.

39:43

And they said it was because, you know, some of them would give this story like,

39:46

oh, man, I just I picked up this thing that was just burden.

39:51

And so it's such a relief to get rid of it.

39:55

I said, man, I do not want anybody that comes through the ministry

40:00

here at church, at Christ Church that spends any time here at all.

40:04

I don't want I would hate to have anybody leave this place and not have

40:08

the reality that I know

40:12

that God gives to us

40:15

of life in him,

40:18

that they walk out of here somehow with this religion

40:20

that just crushes them, that becomes just one more thing that they have to do.

40:25

And they walk out of here with this, this weight of guilt, of their

40:28

just failing because they don't understand the God.

40:31

God doesn't care about the failures.

40:34

He cares about the direction that you pressing into this life

40:37

and growing into who he's called you to be.

40:40

I would hate for anybody, anyone here,

40:43

even this morning, to walk out of here,

40:46

not realize that this is life he's calling us into.

40:49

Jesus says, come to me, all of you who are are weary

40:53

and are heavy burdened, and I'll give you rest.

40:59

Why? Because he's inviting us into his life.

41:01

It's not inviting us into some other thing.

41:05

So will you take him up on that invitation to not just have him as a safety valve,

41:10

but to have him as your home base,

41:13

as your default, as your dwelling place.

41:18

Because in that there's great, there's life, there's joy, there's freedom.

41:22

The third is, there may be some of you here that aren't living, that life,

41:26

and you're growing in it and you're, you know,

41:29

you've found that relationship with with Jesus.

41:32

You found that he is your default. And and you don't just run to him in the hard times.

41:36

You are growing in him. But as you abide in him, he says that the spirit will give

41:40

you opportunities to grow. And that

41:43

question for you is are you taking advantage full opportunity,

41:47

full advantage of the opportunities that God opens up for you to grow,

41:51

to grow deeper in this life? So, for example, last week I had you guys just reach over, right?

41:57

And lay your hand on someone and just speak a blessing over them.

42:01

And I said, you guys can do that any time.

42:04

So how many you guys have blessed somebody this week?

42:06

I mean, literally gone up and just blessed them. Why?

42:12

There's an opportunity every single day, every single Sunday for sure.

42:17

Who's going to get mad at you if you go up and say, can I just

42:19

can I just because blessing over you, I wouldn't.

42:23

Would you guys be angry if somebody said, hey, can I can I pray for you?

42:27

Can I not just list but can I bless, speak as a blessing into your life?

42:32

No. So you know Christ and have been brought in this word.

42:38

Lean into the things that he opens up.

42:41

Now we're talking about spiritual gifts. And the last thing I want to tell you about is so at the 1030,

42:46

during that that time, Pastor Sheryl is going to be leading a,

42:51

like, a discovery class about these spiritual gifts.

42:55

I tell you guys, you guys are at the nine, so you could be there,

43:00

and she doesn't care if people walk in.

43:02

But if you have the time, if you don't have just a pressing need

43:06

driving you home, right.

43:08

I encourage you to be there. Why?

43:10

Because that is how we grow.

43:12

We lean in, we learn.

43:14

We give the spirit. The spirit says, here's an opportunity.

43:17

We say, okay, I'll take that. And we grow

43:21

and we grow in the depth of our understanding,

43:23

the depth of the confidence and the depth of understanding this life,

43:28

this life that God invited us into, this life

43:31

that was from the beginning.

43:34

We're reminded again, yeah, don't don't get caught up in the religion.

43:38

Don't get all caught up in the learning of the facts, in the knowledge. No,

43:43

said go back in the beginning.

43:45

remember that

43:47

in the beginning, God

43:50

and his love for you.
