Game. Here, Walter, get up here, get up here. Come

0:02

on, we're gonna chill. Okay, buddy, we're

0:05

gonna at Jill Walter.

0:08

If you're a fan of Ferrari, don't

0:10

make a noise. All

0:13

right, We're good. We're rolling from

0:19

my Heart Radio and Sports Illustrated Studios.

0:21

This is choosing sides one.

0:28

Wow. So

0:35

last episode we talked about how Ferrari

0:37

is emerging from this dark period

0:39

and its history. It's really on the up

0:41

and up at the start of season,

0:44

and obviously I'm sure the question on your mind is

0:46

who is going to help them get the job done.

0:49

All we've talked about is Ferrari. There's people in the

0:51

cars, right according

0:54

to Endza Ferrari, there are not they don't matter, but there

0:56

are in fact people in the cars. So yeah,

0:59

today we're talking about two drivers. Uh

1:02

one charolet Claire. He is

1:04

British. He is monogasque, not

1:07

French monogasque. Yes, okay,

1:09

and let me speak for the listeners who

1:12

don't know what that means, not me, I

1:15

do what is monogasque. He

1:17

is from Monaco, which is that tiny principality

1:20

that is technically I think that's one of the smallest

1:22

country whatever. It's also very rich. Grace

1:25

Kelly left acting to marry the

1:27

former Prince of Monaco. It's a fun fact

1:29

back in the day. And uh, yeah,

1:31

so it's on it's on the coast of France. It's very

1:33

tiny. But you cannot tell anyone from Monico

1:36

that they are basically French because they will butt

1:38

your head off. So and that includes Charles,

1:40

who is very clear that he is monta Gasque.

1:43

Uh and I did not know that that

1:45

was what you called somebody from Monica. I

1:48

would have probably said Monican I

1:52

am, admittedly. I also

1:54

did not know until I became a Formula one fan,

1:56

and now I feel very superior to percent

1:58

of the population. Want to gass

2:00

Our other driver, Carlos Science, is from Spain,

2:03

which is a little bit more straightfoward. So

2:05

but those are who we're talking about today. So let's

2:09

start with Charles because he is

2:11

a very fun one to talk about. And I will say,

2:13

yeah, Carlos and Charles very different backstories,

2:17

very different drivers. I also find it funny

2:19

that their names are both variations of the same

2:21

name. Technically, like Carlos is the Spanish

2:24

person of Charles. I'll say Charles is dating a

2:26

woman named Charlotte. There's just a lot of a

2:30

lot of sharp stuff going on

2:32

there. Uh So, okay, we're

2:35

we're gonna, We're gonna first let's break down. I guess

2:37

the general gist of this duo

2:40

here. So you've

2:42

got you know, you look at red Bull, You've got

2:44

Max for step In, you know, Sergio Checho Perez.

2:47

There's a very clear number one, number two. But

2:49

they do seem to get along. They're very cool with their

2:51

roles or generally they understand what their roles

2:53

are. Um, I'd say on the surface, charl

2:56

and Carlos have a very easy banter,

2:58

a very kind of friendly partnership. They've

3:01

been known to play chess against each other online,

3:03

so you can actually see it as a fan, and it's

3:05

interesting they take different approaches to their chess games,

3:07

which is fascinating. Uh And

3:10

and generally, yeah, they do goofy challenge

3:12

videos together for the team. Organically, they

3:14

kind of have a lot of fun during driver interviews.

3:16

It's relaxing. Do you listen music sometimes?

3:19

To realize I've

3:21

sometimes started to listen some

3:23

yes in the mornings, just yes,

3:26

really something that is

3:28

maybe one of of the few styles

3:31

that I'm not a big finel. Send me the playlist. Yeah,

3:35

there seems to be good vibes, so to speak between

3:37

the two of them. I'm gonna google their salaries

3:39

real quick. Yes, you mind if I do that, go for

3:41

it. Team

3:44

Ferrari Formula

3:46

one salaries. So you're

3:49

looking this up. Something funny about F one salaries

3:51

is they're all secret. They're like, you can't

3:53

go to a team and ask them for their driver's salary, but

3:55

every other team will tell you what everyone else

3:58

is doing. Hence why we have the estim nations

4:00

we do have, right, So this Google's estimating

4:03

that Carlos gets

4:05

ten mill and gets

4:08

twelve, so pretty similar. I

4:10

mean I looked up Max and

4:12

Checko and it was four versus eight.

4:14

Yeah, pretty clear discrepancy there.

4:16

Yeah, this is more even. Yeah,

4:19

Charles Charol, he's

4:23

twenty four and Carlos is

4:25

twenty seven. Is this recording kind of things? In

4:27

turn twenty eight and a couple of months, so, uh,

4:30

you know, Charol younger driver, but but definitely

4:32

sort of like golden boy

4:34

of the team. Carlos came

4:37

in only one season ago at the start of one,

4:39

but is only a couple of years olders. They're close in eight

4:41

It's not like some of these teams that you've got, you know, Lewis

4:44

and George thirteen years apart. So that's

4:46

that's that's the overall gist of of Charol

4:48

and Carlos. So I think it's also fun

4:51

though to talk about them separately. Charlot

4:53

is, without a doubt a percent, Ferrari's

4:55

golden boy. Interestingly, their team that has

4:57

often gone with slightly older drivers,

5:00

um, including in the fifties, some of their drivers are

5:02

in like their late forties and in early more

5:04

reason for me to like them. There you go, Yeah, you have

5:06

a chance. Every time you're telling me something about

5:08

Ferrari, I am more on board.

5:10

Yeah I was gonna say, you have a chance to to be a Ferrari.

5:13

No, no, but I like that approach

5:15

of not just younger's better, like more

5:18

experienced, a more savvy driver. I'm

5:20

into that. Yeah. So he yea. So

5:22

Charles signed with the team in late

5:25

for the start of the nineteen season, and

5:28

uh, it was kind of a surprise when they signed him

5:30

that young again, because the team isn't

5:32

necessarily known for that like other teams are. Like a Red

5:34

Bull who's kind of known for signing and kind of pumping

5:36

and dumping people in the program. Uh.

5:39

And he also at the time that he had

5:41

signed a little bit after that, he signed a five year

5:43

contract extension a year later,

5:45

which was I think considered one of the

5:47

longest, if not the longest, in F one history

5:49

at the time. So I feel great to

5:51

be young and to sign a long contract. You can finally

5:54

just settle in and just just to take a

5:56

deep breath exactly. So his contract was

5:58

for through the end of so in

6:00

other words, you know, always put a lot of eggs in the Charl

6:02

basket, so to speak. And it's it's it's generally

6:04

known that he's there. Guy,

6:07

he is ferrari uh and

6:09

all of that. Let me show you actually before we move

6:11

on, I'll show you a physical photos physical

6:13

appearance of Charl. I

6:15

mean, I have this coaster, but

6:18

it's not a photo. You know what, Michael,

6:20

I have something better for you. I

6:23

have Kate Lazat. She is the

6:25

co creator of Two Girls, One formula, Two

6:28

Girls One Formula that is

6:30

in fact what yeah. But more

6:32

importantly, she's a Charo Leclaire

6:34

super fan. Think of a Greek

6:36

god. Think

6:40

of just like the best looking, angelic,

6:43

beautiful, chiseled, gorgeous

6:45

person that you can think of, And that is only half.

6:48

He has messy brown hair.

6:51

His eyes are like green

6:53

blue gray. They

6:55

just like look like an ocean, like you

6:57

just want to like swan dive into his

7:00

eyes. Perfect

7:03

eyebrows, perfect cheekbones, The bone

7:05

structor is unmatched. He

7:08

is more beautiful than the most beautiful woman

7:10

I've ever seen. Oh

7:12

man, this is I'm getting he

7:15

is, And forgive me for describing

7:18

a world class athlete this

7:20

way. He's cute. He's

7:23

very cute. This motherfucker cute. Okay,

7:26

like he he's cute. That's

7:28

that's Charles. He also has like his friends

7:30

with fashion designers, he's a little less flashy

7:32

than he never shows up to the track, for instance,

7:34

and anything other than his team kit right

7:37

like he's ready to go, always got the shirt on. But off

7:39

track he can be a little more stylish, which, by

7:41

the way, I do appreciate because you showed me

7:44

Lewis Hamilton's showing up with all this fancy

7:46

fashion, and as time has gone

7:48

on, I've thought more about that, and there is

7:50

a time and a place to

7:53

show off your fashion. And I'm almost now

7:55

becoming a little more critical of Lewis Hamilton's

7:57

doing that on an official walk

8:00

through on the track. I almost

8:02

like Charles Leclair for

8:05

wearing the team kick because that's like, this

8:08

is a team event, and when it's time to

8:10

go balls fashion, I'll do that too,

8:13

So I could see why that shook things

8:15

up when Lewis Hamilton's does does

8:17

that, I will say, Um, it's obvious

8:19

to me that Charles does not at least have some sort

8:21

of like Hollywood stylist. He's

8:24

very into bandanas, Like he puts

8:26

bandanas on his head kind of a cross it's

8:29

over and so Ferrari's crossed off. So

8:32

why is Charole given all, you know, this contract

8:35

extension, Why is he signed so young? All those

8:37

things? Similar to Max, he is incredibly

8:39

fast. Undoubtedly Leclair is a championship

8:41

caliber driver F one expert. I'll just

8:44

kevlowskis he's in his prime right now.

8:46

His pace, especially in qualifying is

8:48

unbelievable. Around one lap,

8:50

he's just he's just magic. The way

8:52

he hooks up that final lap in Q

8:54

three, the way he's able to kind of really just

8:57

put it out there as close to the walls and you know, as

8:59

close to the edge of the track because he can. He was making

9:01

these kind of mid corner corrections that his teammate

9:03

wasn't able to do. Let's let's then talk about

9:05

Charles the man Less the driver. He

9:09

is just a very earnest, like good

9:11

hearted boy, Kate Lozatte

9:13

again, he grew up in Monaco

9:16

and from a very young age, like

9:18

all of the brothers, got into karting because

9:20

they were really good friends with um

9:22

the Bianchi family and for those of

9:24

you who are not super familiar with F one, Jules

9:27

Bianchi was an F one driver

9:29

and so like the Bianchie family was very close to

9:31

Charless and they owned a carding circuit

9:34

and so they would bring the Leclair boys

9:37

there to to kart um. Charles

9:39

was the best one obviously out

9:41

of all of them, and so they didn't

9:43

have a ton of money, so they had to like only

9:45

be able to afford to like put

9:48

money behind one of the boys to

9:50

continue on, and so that was Charles. Charles

9:52

starts making his way through the junior

9:54

formulas. In the early things

9:57

are looking great and then unfortunately

9:59

tr Judy strikes for a first time. Charl

10:02

Leclair lost his godfather

10:04

at a very young age. This is a

10:06

one journalist, Jenny Girl. His godfather

10:09

was Jul Bianche, who was a

10:11

former F one driver and the guy that they all

10:13

said was going to go to Ferrari and be

10:15

their next great hope. However,

10:18

he was severely injured,

10:20

critically injured in an accident in Japan. You

10:24

know me, I will keep you updated. So

10:27

that was the f I Press delegate Matto Bonciani

10:30

saying that Biankee is unconscious. It's

10:32

the only thing he would say. He's taking the hospital,

10:35

he's on life support. He eventually succumbs to

10:37

his injuries and dies.

10:39

Everyone was saying he was like he was

10:41

going to Ferrari. That was like where he

10:43

was going to end up. Um, that's what he's working

10:45

for. And so obviously that was like horrifyingly

10:48

hard for Charles. He was like, that's my

10:50

godfather, the man who like taught me everything

10:52

I know in terms of motorsport.

10:55

So you know, Charles almost

10:57

makes it his mission, like he also wants to

11:00

drive for Ferrari, not just for him, but for

11:02

Jewels who didn't get to fulfill

11:04

that, you know, see that goal through and accomplish

11:06

that lastly number one.

11:09

Fast forward a couple of years, his

11:11

father dies. Charles is in

11:14

Formula two, so that that junior level right

11:16

below Formula one. And the

11:18

story goes that just days after his father has died,

11:20

Charles goes to the latest race, which

11:23

is in Baku, Azerbaijan, and he gets

11:25

onto the steps in Baku having

11:27

won the race with tears,

11:30

and it was such a courageous thing.

11:32

I think everybody in the paddocky, even though it was one

11:34

of the junior categories, just

11:37

stood still and looked at this young

11:39

boy because at the time he was really

11:41

a young boy with dim poles

11:44

and you know, floppy brown hair, and

11:46

you just thought this strength of

11:48

character that it took for him to even race

11:51

that weekend, let alone for

11:53

him to race and win with

11:55

something extraordinary. And to only

11:57

add two more to this story that's already sad.

12:00

When his dad was dying, Charles

12:02

had hoped that he would have news of hope

12:05

that he had signed. You know, he had some news about Formula one

12:07

to give to his dying father. So he goes

12:10

to his dad and he lies to him

12:12

and to his dad that he has signed with a Formula

12:14

one team. So that his dad can be

12:16

happy, and of course Chiles buries him

12:18

knowing that he is like he's like, please,

12:21

dear God, let me make a formula one time, so I'm not lying

12:23

to my dad about like you know.

12:25

So thankfully he signs with the Sober Team

12:27

a couple of months later, but you're just like, oh

12:29

my god, this guy who so badly wanted his

12:31

dad to be proud and like to to be able to give

12:33

him good news on his deathbed, Like,

12:35

oh God, that's just so heavy.

12:38

You did say these guys are filled

12:40

with daddy issues. It's like, you know, I

12:42

like to think, uh that, yeah,

12:46

I mean, that's very achievement based. I

12:48

have to have this achievement to make my dad

12:50

proud of me. Like, but also

12:52

it's like the son who wants to make that just wants to bring

12:55

some light to the dad liked

12:58

his heart heartbreaking and also a psychologists

13:03

be very interested in that. A lot of tragedy

13:05

in Charles's backs and also tragedy

13:07

on the race track. Yeah yeah, yeah, So

13:10

so that's that's charl And I think what

13:12

what this all leads to is that Charles

13:14

a person he can be in some ways.

13:17

He's very much a driver's driver, right he comes

13:19

to the track. He's very into race car driving. It's

13:21

all he thinks about, you know, all

13:23

of that. He's also very passionate and

13:26

Charles almost sometimes wants it so

13:28

badly that he'll overdo it. Right. So

13:30

here's a fun fact. Up until Charlott

13:34

Leclaire had never finished his home

13:36

Grand Prix and Monaco, and

13:38

a lot of it comes down to not a

13:40

question of if charl is a good driver a bad driver,

13:43

but I think he just really wants

13:45

it so badly, especially when he's at home,

13:47

that he has a tendency to overdo

13:50

it. It's very common for athletes

13:53

to put so much pressure

13:55

on themselves that they underachieve. That's

13:57

very common in all sports. Joking

14:00

is if that's what we're calling it, I mean it is

14:03

the thinnest line away

14:06

from succeeding. Yeah, So I'd

14:08

say overall, yeah, like Charole,

14:11

I think is like easy to root for in many ways.

14:13

He's got he's got a lot going on in the back

14:16

story. He's got a lot of heart, not

14:18

yet not known for being like an

14:20

awful, aggressively rude driver who's

14:23

the worst and whatever. So that's yeah, that's I

14:25

guess Charo. He does seem easy

14:27

to root for, and uh, that's

14:29

always funny when you make that and then you look up the salary

14:31

and you're like, oh, and he's making twelve million dollars

14:33

a year plus endorsements. But yeah, that's

14:35

that's interesting. All right. Cool, that's Charles

14:37

Charlotte. So

14:40

who's the other driver. We'll get into all

14:42

of that right after the break. So

14:46

who's the other driver? Yeah, right

14:49

on the other side of the rush across from Charlotte

14:51

Spaniard. Yeah. The Spanish version of Charles

14:54

kidding is is Carlos Science. And

14:57

unlike charl who does not really come from

14:59

like storied racing family, Carlos

15:01

is from a hardcore racing

15:04

family. His dad is Carlos Sr.

15:07

And Carlos signs. Sr. Is

15:09

one of the most iconic figures in a

15:11

form of motorsport called rally. The

15:14

start of Stage fourteen says is driving

15:16

like a man possessed as usual. There's

15:18

a lot of off roading, there's a lot

15:20

of your kind of going into you know,

15:22

the mountains and whatnot. It's also incredibly

15:25

dangerous. The

15:28

car is destroyed flipping six times.

15:31

SAME's head lulls about crashing

15:33

into the ground on two of the flips.

15:36

He's an absolute bull

15:38

of a man. That was Jenny Go again. He's

15:40

called al Mattador, you know, the king when

15:42

it comes to driving. So yeah,

15:44

there's some there's some good stock. And

15:47

Carlos has had quite a checkered past

15:49

really when it comes to Formula One. No problem

15:51

getting into it. Staying in

15:54

it was the issue for him. So Carlos

15:56

different story than Charles. The big thing

15:59

to know about Carlos is he's kind of known

16:01

as a team hopper. He was part of Red

16:03

Bull, was relatively successful

16:05

and it's just kind of bobbed around different teams

16:08

trying as best he can. He's in

16:10

his ninth season currently in Formula One. He's

16:12

been on four teams. So he

16:15

was at Toro Rosso. He moves to

16:17

a team called Reno now called Alpine

16:19

in the sport, which we'll talk about soon. He jumps to

16:21

McLaren for two seasons. Yeah, I

16:23

get it. You kind of have friends like that. Yeah, the

16:25

fifth time they tell you it's a new job, you're kind of

16:27

like over asking questions

16:30

and you're like, okay, this is this is now up to you. Everyone

16:32

thought, oh, is he is he in trouble?

16:34

Here? Is he going to be able to stay in Formula

16:36

One? And then all of a sudden we

16:38

get news that he's going across to Ferrari

16:41

in a most unexpected I think signing.

16:45

No one really thought that they were going to come in and

16:47

snatch a slightly senior,

16:49

slightly untested

16:52

driver. Yeah, and I think for

16:54

Carlos, he's really gotten the reputation of

16:56

being a driver who is super

16:58

adaptable, super verse at all, and very consistent

17:01

generally speaking, Like you know, he's hopped into

17:03

a bazillion different Formula one cars and can immediately

17:05

kind of figure things out generally. A disadvantage

17:08

of that is that he's No. One's

17:10

number one guy, right So at Red

17:12

Bull, obviously he was there around when Max Verstappen

17:14

was coming up, and that was kind of, you know, everyone kind of

17:17

knew even then Max Stappin is gonna be the guy.

17:19

You know, Charlotte Claire is the Ferrari guy. Even

17:22

when he was at McLaren, he was actually faster than his

17:24

teammate Lando Norris. But Lando Norris,

17:26

who will talk about in our next episode, Landa

17:28

Norris was in the McLaren Young Driver's

17:31

Program and was kind of seen as like, no, we're we're

17:33

priming him to be the guy for us, And

17:35

I think to that extent, there's always been this question from

17:37

people like, well, what does Carlos want? Did you

17:39

even want to be a Ferrari driver? Like what what's

17:41

the goal here? You know? Is it just whatever

17:44

car will get him fastest from you know, beginning

17:46

to end of race? Like what's you know? That's kind

17:48

of the I think the lingering question about him or

17:50

with Charles. You know that he's all in on Ferrari

17:52

as much as they're all in on him. Carlos,

17:54

you know, I think some people were surprised when he went

17:56

to Ferrari and McLaren looked, Yeah,

17:59

he was still finishing

18:01

faster than than Lando and and technically

18:03

actually finished just ahead of him in season

18:06

after he moved to Ferrari. So yeah,

18:08

there's just a lot of mystery surrounding

18:11

like what what does Carlos signs? Does we want?

18:13

Yeah, he actually had a great rookie season at

18:15

Ferrari. He did beat

18:17

charl Leclair, although it's

18:19

one of those occasions where the numbers don't quite tell all

18:21

of the story because Charles had a hell of a lot of bad luck

18:23

last season, but still amazing to do. You know, it's still

18:25

amazing to beat schal Leclair at his own team

18:28

in your first season at Ferrari. But he's

18:30

been given a championship level car and he just

18:32

hasn't been able to step it up to that level. Whilst

18:35

hl Leclair, you know, he's been given that championship card

18:37

this season and he's gone up a little bit of a

18:39

step. So that's what that's what kind of Carloso

18:41

struggled with. But he's also had a hell of a lot

18:43

of bad luck. I'm not you know, I don't think he's

18:45

gonna be in that championship fire. He's quite far behind.

18:47

But up against schul Leclair in

18:50

that car, it's going to be very difficult

18:52

for anyone to beat Shoals, I will say, though,

18:54

Yeah, Carlos very well liked guy across

18:56

the grid. He has good chemistry with any teammate.

18:59

He has you know, you know, keeps things light,

19:01

keeps things fun. Uh. So that's I

19:03

think a big pro in his corner. And

19:05

and Ferrari just announced that he's getting

19:07

another contract extension and for at least, I believe

19:09

it's two more seasons, so they obviously

19:11

see something in him. But the

19:14

other thing to keep in mind with Ferrari is that

19:16

while they're young driver program isn't as ridiculously

19:19

gigantic and ruthless as Red Bulls,

19:21

they do have a pretty healthy number

19:24

of young drivers who are

19:26

coming up. So the question is if Charles is their guy,

19:29

where does that leave Carlos in the long term, especially if

19:31

he isn't performing right And man, you must feel

19:33

that if you're on if you're a Formula One driver,

19:36

you know all of these teams have young driver. You

19:38

must feel these guys just clawing

19:40

at you at all times. The

19:42

next two years are important for Carlos exactly

19:45

if he kind of takes the next step up, he's

19:48

on a big enough team, he'll be noticed, he'll get the

19:50

resources. But if he kind of just withers,

19:53

yeah, I don't like that. Yeah, anything can happen. Um,

19:57

So Carlos is a lot of question marks. I will show you Carlos.

19:59

I will preface by saying Carlos

20:02

um loves the thirst

20:04

trap also has a devoted

20:06

fan base just based aesthetically

20:09

on what he's up to, but this will give you an

20:11

idea fan base based aesthetically.

20:14

Oh yeah, Spanish

20:18

handsome. We got four

20:20

pictures here, two of which, thank you Lily, his

20:22

shirt is off I want to give

20:24

you. It's from his instagram, so it's gonna be

20:26

the full picture of Carlos,

20:28

one of which he's lifting powerful

20:31

dumbbells. The hair I

20:33

mean, I don't he's standing still, but the hair is moving

20:35

somehow. It's always in emotion. Yeah,

20:38

so this is a handsome duo. Uh

20:41

and um,

20:45

he looks like a Spanish stallion,

20:47

even though the term is Italian stallion.

20:50

Yeah. Yeah,

20:52

so that's that's Carlos. I do find it interesting

20:54

you found Charles cute and Carlos

20:57

handsome to start. I mean, that's

20:59

right. Am I wrong? But I'm interested

21:02

to see what the fans say. Right

21:04

if you've If you've, I don't offended

21:06

anyone, because if you have called them both very attractive,

21:08

I would say that Charles

21:12

feels to me like the approachable

21:14

member of a boy band, and

21:17

um, Carlos

21:19

feels like movie star. Don't

21:22

go anywhere near that table. You

21:24

see what I'm saying? That perfect analogy. Yeah,

21:26

yea, I completely see it. I'm not sensing

21:29

a big rivalry between these two. You

21:32

even sent a video to me where they're

21:34

like giggling doing pressed

21:36

together. Yeah, that doesn't feel

21:38

like, you know, I'm gonna

21:41

I'm gonna slice this guy up on the track. Is

21:43

that a problem for them? But they're not like more

21:46

hating each other. It's interesting they feel

21:48

like there was a lot of camaraderie when when the

21:50

car was still struggling last

21:52

year, you know, when they were fighting for that that third

21:54

place in the championship. You know, they weren't even in real

21:57

championship contention. I feel

21:59

like there's there's something be said for right when you're both

22:01

like, you know, we're really slogging through it, and you

22:03

know Charle was was really slogging

22:05

through it after so you know, there's a little

22:07

bit more support there

22:09

to be given. Things are starting to get

22:12

a little bit complicated. As

22:14

we've talked about, Charole is the golden

22:16

boy of Ferrari. However, Carlos

22:19

I would say is no slouch either. He definitely

22:22

is not considered the future

22:24

of the team. He's not the guy the whole

22:26

team is kind of being built around. But he's still a

22:28

very strong driver who wants to win and wants

22:31

to succeed and wants to do well, so

22:33

that, as you can imagine, does start to create

22:35

some conflict to begin with. Just

22:37

because two young

22:40

millionaires giggle during a two minute

22:42

press conference doesn't mean they're best friends exactly.

22:44

We don't really know. Yeah, I think for the first

22:46

time in a while firm Ferrari, their

22:48

drivers are very equal footing Kate Lizzott.

22:51

Again, they're very similar ages, very

22:53

similar skill sets and

22:56

and experience levels. So something that

22:58

has been really interesting

23:00

about Ferrari team boss Mattia

23:03

he has made it clear that he's fine

23:05

with his drivers racing it out between each other,

23:08

keep it on the track. I like that. He's like, we're trying

23:10

to get back to where Ferrari used

23:13

to be, so we

23:15

are going to make the decisions to make that

23:17

happen. While it's super entertaining for

23:19

us as fans and

23:22

a spectators, that causes problems

23:24

for the team. Carlos, I

23:26

think, is still trying to fight for it, and the fact

23:28

that team leadership at Ferrari isn't

23:30

making it clear at this point in the season who

23:32

they're going to prioritize could potentially

23:35

make that worse. I mean, as soon as

23:37

you allow yourself to be the

23:39

number two guy, the other teams

23:42

see you as the number two guy also,

23:44

and then you can almost never escape that,

23:46

like you almost just have to be alpha, alpha,

23:48

alpha all day long, and then you die in alpha.

23:51

That's my opinion. I mean, as a guy who

23:54

was number six on his collegiate tennis

23:56

team, that number two position,

23:58

that that label is

24:01

tough. Let's take a quick

24:03

break and we'll be right back. So

24:09

I guess to give the final pictures here. I

24:11

think most people, even if you're a neutral,

24:14

even if you've never heard of Formula

24:16

one until you've listened to this podcast, you

24:19

can get behind Ferrari. This year. We're hearing

24:21

from Jenny Girl because they've been so rubbish

24:24

all of a sudden to come out with a decent car

24:27

with two fabulous drivers. It's

24:30

just really exciting. And

24:32

they're called the prancing Horse for a reason

24:34

because when it's performing, you're

24:36

there on your tippy toes going, oh my goodness,

24:39

this is great. It's it's a real

24:42

thing of joy to see Ferrari back to

24:44

where they've been in the past. You know, one of the

24:46

most dominant teams in Formula

24:49

one. Well, the history also the seventy

24:51

year that just builds up. You have your kid become

24:53

a fan and that kid's kid because yeah,

24:55

so it just keeps building exactly. Yeah. And

24:58

then if we're talking about drivers,

25:00

obviously a lot of love to Charles Charlette

25:02

Claire is probably the most likable

25:06

guy on the grid, I would say,

25:08

in terms of who he is, what

25:10

he stands for, and his journey into

25:13

Formula one which has been extraordinary.

25:16

But cut through all of that, he's

25:19

just a great guy who can drive blomen

25:21

fast. Yeah, it's just a

25:24

it's a fairy tale story. And um,

25:27

I've did underneath

25:29

the podium and shed a couple of tiers for him.

25:32

And I think when someone manages

25:35

to do that to our cynical journalist cynical

25:37

journalists, then they have a lot going for them.

25:40

And above all else, if esthetics are important,

25:42

the bone structure is excellent. So instructor is

25:44

a bonus bonus. And then Carlos,

25:46

uh, you know, despite Carlos

25:49

kind of being in the kind

25:51

of odd position of number two, but also

25:53

evenly matched generally, you

25:55

know, and not necessarily an obvious number

25:57

two, he is, like I said, a very con

26:00

asistant driver where you know where charl

26:02

might have some issues, Carlos can kind of

26:04

ye be that more consistent, reliable driver

26:07

at times. So if you're into that, if

26:09

you're someone who has job hopped a lot in life and

26:11

don't want to be held against you, you

26:13

know, Carlos could could be the guy to to

26:15

go with. And he just signed for two more years after

26:18

this year with Ferrari, so uh,

26:20

it's no no small feat given that they

26:22

do have a pretty deep stable of younger

26:25

drivers really chomping at the bit. I think

26:27

I like a team where both drivers

26:30

can win, as opposed to

26:32

a team that's making the calculation

26:35

of we're going to set up one driver to

26:37

win with using our other driver because

26:40

so many things are unpredictable in sport,

26:42

and especially with these engines and the tracks and the

26:45

humidity and the weather. Having to championship

26:48

drivers, in my opinion, seems like the

26:50

strategy that I would want to adopt. Uh.

26:53

If I was Carlos and I even

26:56

felt a smidgeon of Charles is

26:58

our guy, Carlos is number two, I would

27:00

be so motivated to fucking win everything,

27:02

you know, So maybe that's what he's thinking yeah.

27:05

So out of out of charlond and Carlos,

27:07

do you have a preference or similar to their championship

27:10

stuff? Are you evenly matched on how you feel?

27:12

I guess I'm leaning towards Carlos, and I

27:15

can't exactly tell you why other than

27:18

um, I'm getting a sense that that

27:20

that he might be Let's

27:23

sign him for a couple of years. We'll see if our young guys

27:25

come up. You know, he's a good place holder,

27:27

and I just this guy is probably

27:30

one. He is one of the best of the best of the

27:32

best, and I want him to kind of. I love when

27:34

someone can prove I'm not a number two.

27:36

I'm not wait, I'm not a placeholder. I'm

27:39

not wait for the new young guy to

27:41

come up. I'm gonna I'm gonna smoke your ass right now.

27:43

And I mean, I think the abs have also gotten

27:45

to you. Let's be let's be honest. Him

27:48

doing an upright dumbbell

27:50

lift shirt off that also helped.

27:52

Yeah, and so out of your your current

27:55

I would say the topics you got George,

27:57

and you really like Checko, I do like

27:59

check Yeah, And then Carlos, is there one that's

28:02

really rising thus far out

28:05

Um,

28:08

I'm a new dad. Yeah,

28:11

it's probably probably Checko at this point.

28:13

Yeah, probably check But I realize that's kind of silly

28:15

because he's like almost admitted to being the number two.

28:18

But um, we need more thirty

28:20

year olds racing. We can't just have been seventeen

28:24

all the time. So I like that. I

28:26

mean, I think Checo would love to know

28:28

that he's number one in your heart. Now,

28:30

Yeah he's number one, even though he's number

28:32

two. But you know what I mean, I've

28:35

not brought up Max at all. He's

28:37

not my favorite right

28:40

now. Where Michael Costa stands is

28:42

probably Checko for the driver

28:44

and Ferrari for the team, you know what I mean. So I

28:46

don't know what that means. I've only have only been

28:49

introduced to three teams and six drivers, so

28:51

we're a third of the way through. But you've got your

28:53

guy. So

28:55

yeah. So next week we're talking about another really

28:58

iconic brand within the sport

29:00

and team within the sport of Formula One, and that is

29:02

McLaren Clarence. So we got McLaren.

29:04

They are known for the papaya orange

29:07

and they are also a team that uh

29:11

is amongst the winningst ever. But they have struggled

29:13

in recent years. They've really had to rebuild their

29:15

program. Uh, and they have a very

29:18

very intriguing lineup to have arguably,

29:21

actually, someone say, the most marketable to drivers

29:23

of anyone on the grid. You have the

29:26

very kind of slightly nerdy

29:28

and giggly young man in

29:31

Lando Norris, who's incredibly fast but very

29:33

young. And then you have got the perennial

29:35

fan favorite in Daniel Ricardo, Australian

29:38

guy, big personality. He has come

29:40

on your program or Trevor knows program

29:43

that you also are on. Yeah, I mean I noticed he

29:45

was on the show and they always announced the guest at

29:47

the beginning of the show and people always clap,

29:50

but when they said his name d people

29:53

went nuts. Well

29:58

we'll talk about how Yeah,

30:00

Daniel Ricardo and Lando Norris are definitely

30:02

the two drivers that that come up among the

30:04

most in terms of who who are the two

30:06

favorites for for a lot of people. So they but they definitely

30:09

have an interesting dynamic because you've got

30:12

two drivers who are ten years apart in age, and

30:14

you know what happens when the older, more experienced,

30:17

more beloved driver who's been around the block for

30:19

a lot longer starts struggling, and the

30:21

young guy is the one that you know. The one

30:23

year old is the one who's who's really bringing home the

30:25

hardware. So lots of talk about McLaren.

30:27

They've got a dude bro, California surfer

30:30

guy, team boss. So yeah,

30:32

much much to do American American

30:35

literal California bro. So

30:38

lots lots of talk about with McLaren. I look

30:40

forward to thank you, Lily. Yeah, it's

30:42

cool, okay, right,

30:46

your free Walter. This
