RATING
I love so much about this podcast. It’s well-acted, incredibly rich in sound, and set in a world I’d love to explore more. I was hoping to add this one to my list, Evolicious Podcast Fiction right here on Podchaser. But due to two fatal flaws, I cannot. One of the flaws is forgivable: it’s light on exposition, leaving (in my opinion) too much to the imagination, with little more that sounds (rich, immersive sounds) for what seems like minutes on end. I think I kinda know what was happening, but a good deal was lost on me. But again, that might be a preference, and I’ll not begrudge the creator their preferences. The bigger flaws is all too common: much of the dialog is obfuscated by that rich soundscape. Waves crashing let us know we’re on the beach. But having the waves so loud as to require me to activate the noise-canceling feature of my headphones make me wonder if I, the listener, were meant to be laying in the surf as the dialog happened. So yes, it sounds great. I just wish I could have heard all the dialog between characters, as I’m sure it was important.
Top of the line. Just go listen - you can´t let go till it´s finished.
The most accurate and intriguing depiction of a political dystopia to be encountered in audio fiction. Dark, gritty and beautifully produced with truly immersive audio.
Aside from the political intrigue and spycraft, the longing for a country you can’t return to is a theme that is beautifully expressed here and I commend the ability of the creators to tap into that via performance and dialogue that's confined to Calais. We have no idea what England is like in 2037 but it doesn’t matter. Dream or nightmare, it’s home. And of course the production quality is impeccable. From the waves upon the shores of Calais to the drone of vehicles and the blast of ship horns making for an unnerving score, this show is entirely successful at immersing you in the place that it is creating. Also, I Vow To Thee My Country, when tied to this subject material, is just one of those songs that’s guaranteed to stab you in the heart.
could not have said better myself:"Calais 2037 is among the more brooding and audio dramas on offer, sacrificing spectacular special (sound) effects for a story that drills away at your conscience relentlessly over 6 episodes. From behind-closed-doors power-mongering to scenes of flat-out physical and psychological torture, Calais 2037 may be the most accurate and intriguing depiction of a political dystopia to be encountered in audio fiction. Dark, gritty and produced in immaculate and convincing detailed audio for a true fly-on-the-wall experience."
