Guest: Noëlle Phillips (Academic and Author of “Craft Beer Culture and Modern Medievalism”)

Noëlle teaches in the English Department at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC. Her research focus is in late medieval book culture and Middle English literature, particularly William Langland's poem Piers Plowman, Chaucer, and the fifteenth-century political adaptations of John Lydgate's poetry. However, she is also very interested in "medievalisms" – how later readers, including modern ones, understand, re-imagine, and use the medieval period. In 2019, Noëlle published the text entitled: “Craft Beer Culture and Modern Medievalism.” The book gives analysis of literary and historical texts, advertisements, labels, and interviews with craft brewers and writers to argue that craft beer is much more than a delicious drink and a social connector; its marketing, its appeal, and its ubiquitous presence in middle class North America reveals a powerful cultural desire for the past in a world that privileges the present.

Noëlle also published a book this year entitled: “Beer and Brewing in Medieval Culture and Contemporary Medievalism.” She is also in the process of her third beer related text that relates to the history of craft brewing in Vancouver from 1880-1920 and 1980-present day.
