This is a

0:03

crowd podcast. Hello

0:08

everyone and welcome to Beefs Golf Club.

0:10

It's Rider Cut Week and we're in Rome.

0:13

It's the most epic event in golf and

0:15

we're here to keep you up to date on everything

0:18

happening behind the scenes and on

0:20

the golf course. I'm so excited

0:22

to be here and we'll be bringing you daily

0:24

episodes over the course of this weekend.

0:27

So sit back and enjoy. This

0:29

is Beefs Golf Club at the Rider Cup.

0:33

Yes everyone, welcome to Beefs Golf Club

0:35

at the Rider Cup. What an incredible

0:37

first day. A massive

0:39

win for Europe today, finishing with a five

0:42

point lead. We're going to go get

0:44

straight into it. I've got Sky Sports

0:46

reporter Jamie Weir here with me. He's been

0:48

out there all day. He looks a bit sunburned.

0:50

I'm knackered. I haven't even

0:53

hit a ball. Sunburned and knackered. How

0:55

are you man? Oh man, what a day, Beef. I

0:58

don't think in our wildest dreams we

1:00

saw this at the end of day one. You

1:02

know all the build up to this has been the sides

1:05

are so evenly matched and this could be the

1:07

closest Rider Cup since Medina

1:10

back in 2012. It's not going to

1:12

be a blowout for either side

1:14

and it's a five point lead at the end of the first day.

1:16

I mean, Luke Donald must be pinching himself. Mate,

1:19

it's absolutely insane. I mean,

1:21

obviously the first session to win 4-0, first

1:24

time it's ever happened for Europe. And

1:26

then I think to go out in the afternoon and you look at the

1:28

way the games were panned an hour and I felt Europe

1:30

were going a bit flat sort of midway through

1:33

the games and to turn it round

1:35

and I mean that last game.

1:37

Yeah, the last sort of two

1:40

matches, the last half hour of play,

1:42

everything just turned round. I

1:45

mean, that's

1:46

the European side will feel that was daylight robbery.

1:50

Knicking a few halves from two of those matches.

1:53

That last match we'd given up on it. We were walking back

1:55

to the media centre thinking, right, well, unfortunately,

1:57

Bob and Rosie are going to lose their match, but never mind.

1:59

6-2 is a great lead and then we say, well

2:02

hang on, they've won 17, let's get ourselves

2:04

to 18 and for Justin Rose

2:06

to hit that to what was it, like 9-10

2:09

feet and hold that putt and

2:11

that reaction from Justin Rose, here's a guy

2:13

who's been there, seen it, done it, got the t-shirt,

2:15

a major champion, been in multiple

2:17

Ryder Cup teams, winning Ryder Cup teams as well,

2:20

that reaction was visceral, like

2:22

they're pumping his chest, pointing

2:24

at his teammates, we might need to get a lip-reading

2:26

expert exactly for what he said but wow,

2:29

I mean, and the energy from the crowd

2:31

for that last half hour, they were just roars

2:33

reverberating all around this place. Mate,

2:36

absolutely incredible, I think we should have a chat

2:38

through all the matches, I think let's go into

2:40

match 1, Hovelin and Hatton vs

2:42

Thomas and Spieth, it ended

2:44

up tied and it was

2:47

such a sort of up

2:49

and down topsy-turvy kind of match, wasn't

2:51

it? Yeah, it was just swinging one way and the

2:53

other, you know, a lot of people also

2:55

raised a few eyebrows that Thomas and Spieth

2:57

were rested for this morning, you know, Justin

3:00

Thomas in particular is an emotional heartbeat

3:02

to the US team, surely you want him out in the opening

3:04

session to gee up, the US

3:06

crowd especially and the US players,

3:09

especially when they're on foreign soil, they

3:11

were rested, okay, surely they're going to come

3:13

out of the traps like caged Tigers

3:15

in the afternoon and there was one stage

3:17

when you're thinking ah, this is classic JT

3:20

and Spieth, this is only headed one way and

3:22

then Tyrell Hatton and

3:24

Victor Hovelin just grabbed that match by the

3:26

scruff of its neck, I mean, what more can

3:29

we say about Victor Hovelin, he was immense all

3:31

day today but this afternoon man, that

3:33

guy's got some serious stones. Absolutely,

3:36

serious, serious stones, I mean,

3:39

the amount of, obviously

3:41

opening up with Chip Shot on the first

3:43

in the morning and the Hot

3:46

on the Last and things like that,

3:48

just everything, you know when things

3:51

are going your way and things seem to be going Europe's

3:53

way today, just that part, I thought

3:55

the part on the last, as

3:57

soon as he hit it and he went over the ridge I was like, ah, he's there.

4:00

He thought he had as well, I

4:02

think. And he was still going, he was still going

4:04

and just dropped in the front edge. Yeah,

4:07

they've battled really well. I mean, playing

4:09

against Smith and Justin Thomas, I mean,

4:11

such a difficult pairing. They're

4:13

such gritty competitors. I

4:16

thought there was a couple really, really

4:18

good moments in that where Justin

4:21

Thomas held that putt on 15 for

4:23

the half where he backed off it and took

4:25

a load of stick from the crowd. And I thought to stand up

4:27

and knock that in, also more

4:29

importantly, on 18, his chip shots nearly gone

4:31

in as well. And the next thing, he's

4:34

got four foot for him to tie

4:36

it. Yeah. I mean, and again, you look

4:38

at it. Fair play to him to stand up and unroll that one

4:40

straight in, right? I was like,

4:43

hats off to you. I was like, I wouldn't want to be part of

4:45

neither of them. I was like, fair play to

4:47

you. Well, mate, as

4:50

we're discussing this, there's an absolute

4:52

festival outside. Kicking off. I

4:54

want to go and join the party. It sounds great. Every,

4:57

everyone's going to be so buzzy coming off the golf

5:00

joint in the party. But yeah, it's like a festival

5:02

in here. Well, let's have a look at match two as well,

5:04

mate. Roman Huygård against Scheffler and Kepka.

5:07

I mean, what a way to start for Huygård,

5:09

but in the first. I was so pleased for Nikolai

5:11

because, you know, he must have been so nervous. Your

5:13

first experience of a Ryder Cup at the age

5:15

of 22 and you're out there with the world

5:17

number one standing opposite you in the world. Number

5:20

three, a two time major champion as your partner

5:22

and a five time major champion on

5:24

the other side as well. I mean, it's pretty elevated

5:26

company to be in and to hit that,

5:29

you know, perfect tee shot, second

5:32

shot right into the sort of heart of the green and then to roll

5:34

in that big curving part. What a way

5:36

to announce yourself and so

5:39

shop for him. But this is another one that just looked

5:41

as if it was just kind of ebbing

5:43

away from Europe. And then I mean,

5:46

it all sort of hinged on the 16th, didn't it? I

5:48

think we're still catching our breath from that. This

5:50

is exactly what this golf course 16, 17, 18 was

5:52

built for. Right.

5:55

For that entertainment. And I mean, Nikolai

5:58

had about 30, 40, 40. for a two,

6:00

America win

6:03

for three already and then John

6:05

Rahm, I mean he's chipped in three times today. Yeah.

6:08

To chip it in again, I mean, he's just an absolute

6:11

machine. I mean, I don't know, I watch

6:14

a lot of golf, you obviously have

6:17

been in a lot of tournaments, played a lot of golf. Are

6:20

there more chips holding the Ryder Cup than any

6:22

tournament you can think of? I don't know what it is, like just chips

6:25

seem to go in, pots seem to go in from distance,

6:27

but today it was a chip, so we're just dropping from everywhere.

6:30

I think when you're playing a stroke player event, you

6:33

know, you're looking at it from sort of a

6:35

percentage type of way. Right, yeah. So

6:38

you're 40 foot away, good putt, don't hit it too

6:40

hard, just good speed. Let's just get up and down here. You

6:42

drop it in the front edge, when it's here and you

6:44

go, well, I've got to make it, it's a completely

6:46

different mindset. Winner bust. Yeah.

6:50

Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And I think that just makes you more

6:52

aggressive. It doesn't matter if you knock it 10 foot past, we've

6:54

got to get it to the hole. We've got to try and knock

6:57

this in. And I think that is a different mentality.

6:59

And that's why you see it so much in

7:01

the Ryder Cup. It just brings every ounce

7:03

of drama. Yeah, amazing. So

7:06

you know, Ram does that at 16,

7:09

gets the match back to all flat. Scottish

7:11

Sheffield then goes in birdie 17 and the

7:14

reaction, I've never seen Scottish Sheffield react

7:16

to that. No, it's phenomenal. I mean,

7:18

he's nearly just slam dunked it straight

7:20

in the hole on 17, especially after

7:23

where John Ram said it as well.

7:25

Step up and do that. I mean, I

7:27

looked at the lineup of that game. And when

7:29

you look at Scheffler and Kepcke and John

7:31

Ram in the same group, and

7:34

I was like, it's like him and Kepcke, like

7:36

two silverback gorillas going out. Yeah,

7:38

absolutely. 18, man. I'm

7:41

still sort of slightly in shock about what

7:43

John Ram did there. I mean, that just unbelievable

7:47

approach. And that part is going 10 foot past

7:49

if it doesn't hit the back of the cup. I think you

7:51

can tell from his reaction, because he took his cap off and was

7:53

like, I can't really

7:55

believe I've just done that to be quite honest with you. We

7:57

talk about our players having celebrations. He

8:00

almost looked overwhelmed and that's one of the first times

8:02

I've ever seen him that overwhelmed. Yeah,

8:04

I was at the back of 18 and he walked off and

8:06

I just gave him a high five and he

8:09

just kind of exhaled. He's just like, I

8:12

can't believe I'm shattered.

8:16

Incredible performance for him all day as well. Looking

8:19

back to this morning, the foursomes, he led from

8:21

the front. This is the third time in a row that the European captain

8:23

sent John Rama in the opening match, the Ryder

8:25

Cup, because you know that he's got fire

8:27

in his belly and he's going to go out there and get some

8:29

early blue on the board. He's got that Spanish

8:32

blood, the same blood sev he did all those years ago.

8:34

He absolutely loves it. He was in his element

8:36

out there this morning. He and Tyrrell were immense.

8:40

To carry it through this afternoon, there was times when

8:42

he was maybe tanking a little bit, just

8:44

kind of flagging because it's hot out there. It's

8:46

a hilly course. But Nicolai,

8:48

they sort of, they ham an egg. They dovetailed

8:51

quite well. And

8:53

then yeah, just the stones to go and do that.

8:55

Eagle the 18th to steal a half.

8:58

The Americans must be feeling sick. And

9:01

going into match three, talking about feeling

9:03

sick. And this was really

9:06

the icing on the cake for Europe or the

9:08

ultimate slap in the face for America was

9:11

the Bob McIntyre, Rose versus

9:13

Homer and Clark result. I mean, two

9:16

down with two to play. Yeah, Matt.

9:19

I mean, yeah, as I said earlier, we'd

9:21

kind of written that one off. We thought, well, look, six two is great.

9:24

And for Bob's sake, I would love him to have got some

9:26

today, but it's going to be a defeat. Never mind.

9:28

And then we start to hear a roar like they have one 17.

9:31

I have one 17, right? Let's get ourselves

9:33

to 18. And then after the tee shots and 18,

9:35

because Bob was in the rough, Rosie was in

9:37

the bunker. Windham Clark pipe sent

9:39

straight down the middle. He's thinking, oh, well, look, they

9:42

gave it their best shot. Clark then hits.

9:44

I mean, was it a shank or just a wild block? Right. I

9:47

just think he completely come out of it and just blocked it

9:49

miles. Right. Yeah. And

9:52

then Rosie, Rosie, did you see actually like have a seven wooded

9:54

this answer a bit? And I was standing next to Finnerie and

9:56

Finnerie's coming to play with Gaddy. I'm finished. Like,

9:58

you know, I got to hit that's also the boom. Is he... what?

10:01

Is he... is he gonna say... Fushie!

10:04

Fushie, tell him I paid back! And sure enough,

10:06

he eventually backed off it and just

10:08

decided to, you know, play for position

10:11

and they hit a non-believable third shot in there inside

10:13

Max Homer. Thought Max Homer would make the part

10:15

didn't, and as I said, Rosie makes it,

10:18

and that reaction, man. Wow. It

10:20

makes him hit a great part as well, by the

10:22

way, watching that just break across the hole. Anything

10:25

else? Did Finn ever say anything else? I'm really enjoying

10:27

this. I mean, most of it probably isn't

10:29

repeatable, or Finn is like... But,

10:33

nah, look, I mean, the

10:36

scene behind that 18th was fantastic, you know,

10:38

I was chatting away to a number of players,

10:40

caddies, a few of the other

10:43

halves as well. And I think everyone was just like

10:45

in disbelief about how today's panned out, because

10:47

all three... There was one point when you're thinking, this

10:50

is gonna be a 3-1 session to the US. And

10:52

fair play, you know, at the end of day one,

10:54

5-3 is still a decent lead to have. And

10:57

all three of those matches flipped in

10:59

what felt like the space of about half an hour. Zach

11:02

Johnson must be sick as a

11:04

dog tonight. He must just be thinking,

11:06

everything that could have possibly gone wrong has gone wrong.

11:09

Yeah, it is. I think it's one of them, you'll be sitting

11:11

on the team bus on the way home back to the hotel

11:14

and you just think, what happened

11:16

there? It looked like they were in control of

11:18

the afternoon and I was thinking,

11:20

I said earlier, after

11:22

the morning session, I was like, if you're

11:24

Luke Donald, you're looking, if you come out 2-2

11:27

here, with a draw, you'll be absolutely

11:29

delighted. And to come out on

11:31

top by half a point,

11:34

I mean, is a miracle. And

11:37

a big thing's to match for as well, Macron and

11:39

Fitzpatrick versus Morikkar

11:42

and Shofle. I

11:44

mean, what was Fitzpatrick

11:46

on? The first six holes. He

11:48

played his first six holes in six under par

11:51

and, you know, he was chomping at the bit to

11:53

play four balls in his past two Ryder Cups,

11:55

both on US soil. He's been consigned

11:57

to foursomes with a kind of veteran who wasn't really prepared.

12:00

forming that week and he texted

12:02

me a few weeks ago and said, I

12:05

don't play football. I'm going to be absolutely

12:07

in livid. And sure

12:10

enough, he's stuck out in four balls and,

12:13

um, and he was buzzing. And like I

12:15

said a bit like earlier about JT and Spi, like

12:17

he just came out of the traps, like a sort

12:19

of caged beast ready to

12:22

go, like let me at them. He ended up

12:24

being at match four in the afternoon as well. So you're

12:26

the last of your entire team to get your Ryder

12:28

Cup underway. Plays his first six and six

12:30

under par. There was such a buzz about that group.

12:33

I was walking with Fitz's parents for a while, which

12:35

is a really happy atmosphere. They

12:37

were so happy for him and they

12:40

sort of, I mean, you

12:42

can't keep your foot to the pedal for an entire

12:44

round. So when you're six up through seven, there's going

12:46

to be a lull at some point and fair play,

12:48

you know, columnar Collins, Anders Schofield had

12:50

great players. They kind of tried to

12:52

claw their way back into it, but then Rory

12:55

just with a dagger on the 15th

12:57

to just end that match. And yeah,

13:00

that was, that

13:02

was great. I'm so chills for Fitz. I can't

13:04

tell you how happy I'm from. A hundred percent. I

13:06

said, you look at his last couple of years though, winning,

13:09

winning a major, he's a completely

13:11

different beast than any other Ryder

13:14

Cup he's played. And obviously being on home soil,

13:16

when I was like, you can just, you can almost

13:18

wipe that, wipe the history of it because

13:21

he's, I find it's a completely different player

13:23

going into this. Yeah. And also

13:26

the way he's

13:28

six under after six. And

13:31

then you think, Oh, he's actually missed one. And then

13:33

Rory goes to make birdie on seven. I know.

13:35

I was like, Oh, I was like that. That

13:38

is so cheeky. That was a proper roar

13:40

when that one went in. I was right next to the seventh green when

13:42

that one went in as well. And you know, it's funny,

13:44

Rory's the only player that ends the first day with a two

13:46

and a record played both, one, both. And

13:48

I don't think Rory's even had his best stuff today.

13:50

That's the, that's the scary thing for the U

13:53

S because Europe's talisman, Europe's most

13:55

experienced player, um, is

13:57

two and O having still got something.

14:00

the tank you would think. I mean it'll be interesting to see

14:02

what happens tomorrow whether you know players

14:04

are rested, you think that Luke

14:06

Donald's got his team in that position now

14:08

where he has the luxury of saying Roy McElroy,

14:11

Victor Hovland, John Ram, you don't have to go

14:13

all five sessions. And coming into this I

14:15

thought he's gonna have to ride those three hards, world

14:18

number two, three and four, they're gonna have to

14:20

go five sessions. Now five point lead at the

14:22

end of day one. Pick your feet up in the morning, Rory,

14:24

why not? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we'll

14:26

see you at 11. Have

14:29

a massage, have a jacuzzi, just

14:31

chill out, have a little espresso, turn up

14:33

for the four balls, hose them in the afternoon, job

14:36

done. Do you know, I reckon

14:39

he might wait one more session before he does that. I

14:41

think you might be right, I think you might be right, I think Rory

14:43

might play in the morning as well and we'll see

14:46

where we are at lunchtime tomorrow. But

14:48

yeah, Rory himself said to me, walking off the back of

14:50

the team, he just sort of shook his head in disbelief

14:52

and went, how on earth have we

14:54

won that session? Because I think he, because

14:57

it was looking like their match was gonna be the first to

15:00

finish, the other three were so in the balance. And

15:02

then he must have been looking at the scoreboard, seeing all that

15:04

red, thinking, oh, three-one, look, it's

15:07

not terrible, but okay. And as

15:09

I said, they turned all three top

15:11

matches around.

15:12

Wow.

15:14

One last question, well, maybe two last

15:16

questions. What would you do if you're Zach Johnson? What

15:19

would you do if you're Zach Johnson? You know, it's interesting,

15:22

I was chatting to Suzanne Petterson a little bit earlier on today,

15:24

the winning Sol, I'm captain, of course, after

15:27

her opening session, found her side

15:29

four nil down. And captains always

15:31

say they have a game plan that they want to stick to. But

15:33

Suzanne said, you know, okay, if it goes

15:35

horribly, she said this before it started, if it goes horribly

15:37

wrong, of course, we're gonna plan B, plan C, plan

15:39

D. Well, it did go horribly wrong in that first session.

15:42

She didn't panic, but she did have to suddenly go to

15:44

an emergency plan, go on gut instinct

15:46

rather than stick to what they'd planned beforehand.

15:49

Zach Johnson, I feel today probably did, even

15:52

after that disastrous opening session, I

15:54

think he stuck to the game plan. And I think that was maybe

15:56

a mistake.

15:58

What does he do now? You're five points.

15:59

points down in the Way Rider Cup and 30

16:03

years since the US won in European soil,

16:05

I mean, his head must be spinning. The

16:07

only thing he will say, and this, you know,

16:09

once the dust settles, he has to sort of keep

16:11

it, keep calm and say to his team, look,

16:14

you're all world class golfers. If

16:16

Europe can win a day, six and a half, one and a half, then

16:19

there's no reason we can't win a day six and a half, one and a

16:21

half as well. Let's go out there in the morning.

16:23

Let's give them absolutely everything

16:25

we've got. And just, you know,

16:29

they will wobble. If they suddenly just read in that scoreboard,

16:32

you know, we could crack them. I'll tell you

16:34

what, it's a long, long, long way back from here.

16:37

And that European team is going

16:39

to be buzzing tonight. Luke's challenge

16:41

is to keep feet in the ground. Yeah,

16:44

big time. I mean, it's the most dangerous place to be.

16:46

And, you know, going into tomorrow,

16:50

if America wants to turn it around, I

16:52

mean, they've got all the momentum going into

16:54

the singles and it's again, you know, where they're

16:56

like world class players and you

16:58

don't want to give them a sniff of anything going

17:00

into more of Europe. And I think you want

17:03

a bit of a, you want a bit

17:05

of a buffer going into singles as well. Because I think traditionally

17:07

the US are always stronger in the singles. You know,

17:09

you look through their team and you think, right, I

17:11

mean, they're all studs. So I

17:13

would love to have a three point

17:15

lead, let's say going into singles, I think would be

17:18

great. But it's a five point lead at the moment.

17:20

So let's be greedy. What's

17:23

the most we can get? We can win it tomorrow. 14 and

17:25

a half, one and a half. No, no,

17:28

no word of a lie. We did a talk

17:30

at the hotel last night and

17:32

some guy we met, he says

17:34

every Ryder Cup, I put a bet on Europe

17:37

to beat them before the singles. And

17:39

he puts £2.50 on. He's

17:41

lost every time. And it is about 1800 to

17:44

one or something ridiculous. Wow.

17:46

Well, a prominent boot maker, I won't

17:48

name for obvious reasons, has already paid out

17:51

in the European win. They paid out this morning at lunchtime.

17:54

You know, so you're looking confused.

17:57

No way they have. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think

17:59

you can guess. which bookmaker, a bookmaker that's

18:01

always trying to think outside the box

18:03

and do things a bit differently. So they paid out

18:06

after a formal opening session. I

18:08

don't think anybody saw that coming. And yeah,

18:11

I mean, where do the states go from here?

18:14

No, well, we'll see. We'll see what happens

18:16

tomorrow, mate. Thanks so much for coming on, man.

18:19

And I'll catch up with you over the weekend. Cannot wait.

18:30

Well,

18:33

everyone, we've only gone and

18:36

bumped into beef scot clubs. Number

18:38

one commentator, Andrew Cotta. How

18:40

are you, man? Am I the number one commentator beef or

18:42

is that just a friendly lie?

18:45

Number one commentator, number one beef

18:47

scot club, still up way up in that tower.

18:50

They were still number one driving

18:53

companion of the east coast of Scotland.

18:56

Number one coffee finder as well. There's

18:58

a lot of number ones going on. There are indeed

19:00

a lot of number ones going on. What's sports?

19:03

What's this beat music that's going on in the

19:05

village? This does my head in. This

19:07

is the way golf, this is the way sporting events are. You

19:10

see the Wentworth, the PGA championship. And

19:12

it's just, and here, I mean,

19:15

these young people and their crazy bopping.

19:18

And I don't know. Honestly, I

19:20

like golf just to be golf. The golf provides

19:22

the entertainment. No, that's nonsense. Anyway,

19:24

no, it's good. You like it. You like

19:27

a bit of this. Yeah, I like

19:29

it. It's like a festival. I mean, what more

19:31

do you want? An absolutely epic

19:33

day, first day of the ride of the cup. And then you get

19:35

to go to a festival. You don't have to go down for

19:38

an hour. I like an absolutely epic first day

19:40

of the ride of the cup. And then silence for people to reflect

19:42

upon it and drive home chatting

19:44

to each other and perhaps listening to the crickets on

19:47

a Roman evening chirping away on

19:49

a warm Italian night. That's what I like. But

19:52

no, we're human beings, so we make a lot of

19:54

noise. Mate,

19:57

you've obviously done a load of ride of cups. This

19:59

is my... 11th rider cup. 11th

20:02

yeah. Wow have you seen anything

20:04

like this today? I've

20:06

not. I remember 2004 Oakland

20:09

Hills in Detroit, Europe

20:12

blasted out a big lead. I think that was 6-2. But no

20:18

I've not seen anything less. I've

20:20

not seen anything where the Americans came and looked now.

20:22

They could have if they'd rolled in 3-putts in the last hole

20:24

instead of the Europeans rolling in 3-putts. It would

20:26

have been a 2-point lead instead of

20:28

a 5-point lead. But they

20:30

looked really, we wondered when

20:33

they were coming in, we wondered if they might be a little

20:35

bit rusty because of the layoff. A lot of them haven't played

20:37

competitive golf recently. They looked that way. They

20:39

looked disjointed. They weren't holding putts back.

20:42

Some of the reads they were getting and some of the, anyway,

20:45

it was, when teams do badly in

20:49

a rider cup, there's always an inquest

20:51

and what is the reason

20:53

for it? An explanation for it sometimes. It's just that

20:56

players don't have a great day out there. It might turn around tomorrow. 100%,

20:59

it's sport at the highest level and I mean the margins

21:01

are so fine. And like you

21:03

look at some of the putts that didn't

21:06

go in for America, they're not necessarily bad

21:08

putts. Some of them are good putts. Loads just slide

21:11

past the hole and the odd bounce here

21:13

and stuff like that. You know what sports like. It's

21:15

fine margins. It really is fine margins.

21:18

Fine margins. Yeah, it's, I

21:20

mean listen, the European team, first of all, they looked

21:22

such a close unit though and that, you

21:25

know, it sounds a bit trite to say but that really can matter

21:27

a great deal. You know, if you're willing to, if you, you know,

21:30

how much they want. Of course both teams want it

21:33

but I just look at the European team and I think that's a

21:35

unit of all the European team and the strange thing

21:37

is of course they all live in America now and

21:40

it's not the European tour against

21:42

the PGA Tour, Europe against America and

21:44

the great dividers it used to be but I

21:46

am seeing a lot of unity. You know, it's tracked

21:48

as effectively American but my goodness

21:50

he's fighting for Europe in there and couldn't

21:53

have been more Austrian if he'd wandered on wearing

21:55

lederhosen and lederhosen,

21:57

that's south of Germany. Anyway, I think we both do

21:59

really. Anyway, so that

22:03

tightness in the team seems to be good. Now I'm delighted for

22:05

Luke Donald, who obviously you know is just

22:07

a classy operator. Oh, he really

22:09

is. He really is. I got asked a few questions

22:11

about him and about his captaincy, and

22:13

I said, he'll be ruthless.

22:16

And I was like, you cannot get to number

22:18

one in the world without being ruthless.

22:21

Somebody I saw a tweet from somebody and I was

22:23

doing a... In me responding

22:26

to it, I thought this guy, it shows that I've just been

22:28

looking at replies to another tweet. It shows a

22:30

little bit of sadness on my part and in my life.

22:32

Emptiness, I think. But anyway, I looked at

22:34

replies to this tweet and it was a guy saying, who's

22:37

Luke Donald? The only time I've seen him is, why

22:39

is he being Ryder... It was an American guy saying, why is he

22:41

Ryder Cup captain? Only time I've seen him was in Tiger Woods,

22:44

you know, video game. And I replied

22:46

saying, well, he was number

22:49

one in the world for 56 weeks, for over

22:51

a year. He was in the top ten in the world for a cumulative

22:53

four years. He played in four Ryder Cups

22:56

and won them all. Oh, and he won the money list in

22:58

both the US and Europe in the same year. So

23:01

I think he had a reply to that. The only

23:03

reason... Got some likes though, that's all I'm asking. Yeah,

23:05

the only reason I could give him is

23:07

that he's eight years old. Yeah, exactly. He

23:10

might be eight year old. So in that case, I'm just abusing

23:12

a child on the internet and that's terrible.

23:15

That doesn't reflect well on me at all. Trolling

23:18

eight year olds. No, but he had... His

23:20

username was something 78. So

23:23

I think he's born in 1978. So unless,

23:27

no, unless he's a 7.8 year old child, maybe. Anyway,

23:32

listen, the thing about me coming on to chat to

23:34

you this evening, but I'm... I like

23:36

this because we go back a little bit,

23:38

and I've also been on Boost Golf Club before,

23:41

but also because we now have a Chipping

23:43

Forecast podcast, which

23:46

is a rival golf ball. But I like

23:48

the other thing is rivalry. We're all

23:50

sharing the same happy golf

23:53

podcast space. Oh, absolutely.

23:55

Yeah, sharing the love. It

23:58

really is. And like when... I

24:00

just don't get it when if you if you're gonna have

24:02

a podcast against podcast and been on your

24:04

arrival and stuff It's about coming together and creating

24:07

more good content and more good episodes

24:09

together I mean I can see from your operation

24:11

that you're a professional out there Where as we are hopeless

24:13

mongoling out those birds out most lady pebbles

24:15

fault. Tell me your standout moment of

24:18

today. I Think the standout

24:20

moment has well, there were a few under

24:22

I mean it has to be in on the 18th green Probably Rams

24:25

part because that was going past

24:27

but also the way you finish, you know There's

24:30

something about and the way he instantly

24:33

Involved Nikolai Huygarn. He was praising

24:35

him as his partner You know a rookie

24:37

a young guy big big talent But

24:40

he's no John Ram and John Ram in the big moment

24:42

stood up and sort of carried things a little bit for

24:44

Europe and you know his chip in on the

24:46

16th and Then

24:48

rolling in that part on 18 for an eagle. Hey,

24:50

he's class, isn't he? But um, I Enjoy

24:54

I enjoy the atmosphere in general. I

24:56

do think that I I wish we didn't have so

24:58

much Cheering for missed

25:00

pots and saying get in the water and things that

25:02

I'm booing when Americans come on the team That's not the

25:04

way to do it. It should all be about if

25:06

our team does well That's all I care about

25:08

and we're going to beat your team So, you

25:11

know, I I was impressed with Justin Thomas

25:13

actually used in Barrick a little bit and

25:15

Scotty Scheffler as well and they responded in the best possible

25:17

way rolling in the pots I thought Justin

25:20

Thomas on 15 when he sort of backed

25:22

off the pot and everyone cheered And

25:24

I just thought I put myself in that position And

25:26

I just thought you do not want to

25:29

be there and for him to knock it in and turn around

25:31

to the crowd I'm front it. It just shows

25:33

what type of character is I

25:35

want to do it to Justin Thomas because he's just gonna say

25:37

right I'm gonna show you and he did rolled it

25:40

in terms of the current sense. Sorry what so

25:42

yeah But it was listen,

25:44

there's such a long way to go, but I have

25:46

such a big lead We know I can turn

25:48

around quite quickly but the Americans are going to have to get

25:50

off to they're gonna have to You

25:53

know at least three one tomorrow

25:55

morning session. So if you're Luke

25:57

Donald, are you putting out?

26:00

the strongest foursomes you

26:02

can and trying to make that lead bigger

26:04

going into the four ball. Well look he's got

26:06

guys like Tommy Fleetwood who didn't play this afternoon, had

26:08

a good rest and Shane Lowry, I'll say Shane Lowry had a

26:10

good rest, Shane Lowry was bouncing around in the

26:12

fairways with every group out there

26:14

but my goodness that guy is pumped for this isn't

26:17

he? But yeah you've got some

26:19

big names who had a bit of a rest

26:21

this afternoon and were able to come back in so I

26:23

think it obviously looks

26:25

really good for Europe but I

26:27

think they'll have a decent

26:30

start in foursomes, they do pretty

26:32

well in foursomes. It can be quite a

26:34

dangerous place to live in you know if I

26:37

was there you're thinking yeah you

26:39

cannot let the door open and if America

26:41

was to get back into it and turn it around they'll

26:44

have full momentum going into Sunday as

26:46

well so it really is I think

26:49

tomorrow morning is a really important

26:51

session. It's a vital session for the

26:53

USA because if they suddenly find you know they could I'm

26:55

not saying they're going to be swept tomorrow morning but you

26:58

know Europe could be getting close to

27:01

double figures in points and that psychologically

27:03

is like we're not far away you know we

27:05

still got another session and then the singles to go so

27:08

it's just I think it's

27:11

such a long way back for me. Now Brookline 1999,

27:14

Europe led 6-2 after the opening

27:16

day so a comparable scoreline today and

27:18

we all know what happened to Brookline in the

27:21

singles so of course it can be turned around

27:23

but I'm not sure against this quality

27:26

of the European side and certainly top eight

27:28

players are big game players as

27:30

well. I think it's almost

27:33

too long a way back for USA I hope it's not because

27:35

I still want to get close match that's what you want. You

27:38

want drama you want intrigue in the final day but

27:40

they're going to have to get something really

27:42

good from the the second day morning session.

27:45

And finally mate obviously you're out here

27:48

with commentary but you're recording your podcast

27:50

too the Chip in Four cast winning

27:53

Carter and obviously Eddie

27:55

Pepro the great Eddie Pep the

27:57

great Eddie Pep. Tell

28:00

me a little bit about it. Well, I mean it started

28:03

you we used to do a podcast long

28:05

before there was beef skull So there's a podcast in the BBC

28:07

called the cuts and the BBC cut that for some

28:09

reason and then Eddie pepper And I started

28:11

one called the pepper pod in covered times,

28:14

but then strange dog things happened for me So it

28:16

kind of got dropped and Eddie went off down a rabbit

28:18

hole of investigating kovid vaccines and things

28:20

like that. So Yeah,

28:23

so but I don't know it's

28:25

fun. We try and offer something different bit like you guys,

28:27

you know, it's golf But it's hopefully

28:29

some entertaining chat as well So that's

28:32

the chipping forecast on wherever you

28:34

get your podcasts and as

28:36

well as be stopped up They're both good. Listen to them both. That's

28:39

it. Listen to them both guys and go and check it out

28:41

and mate Thanks so much for popping by

28:43

and I'll probably come find you tomorrow

28:46

somewhere. You're very welcome We'd love to get you as a guest

28:48

in the chipping focus. You and Eddie pepper together break the

28:50

internet I'm gonna get a coffee

28:52

from a vending machine. Now. Do you want you want my coffee

28:54

fender machine? No, no, it's not the machine there.

28:56

That's not that's not Andrew Cossett's added I

28:59

don't know you have to you have to cut your cloth

29:01

accordingly and sometimes you just have to

29:03

take what coffee is available Especially

29:05

during the Ryder Cup long days fatigue. You

29:07

need the caffeine. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next two days

29:09

I think it's gonna be great. Yeah, always. Thanks

29:11

so much for coming on. Cheers, baby How

29:16

great is Andrew choir as we as

29:19

we always say Absolute love his voice

29:21

and he's a great laugh. But right

29:23

now we got producer Ryan back and

29:26

he's got a new hat Up

29:28

enough to the Pro Shop. Maybe you've been in there No,

29:31

I've seen it. It's like a warehouse It's like

29:33

a an absolute air hanger

29:35

and is completely blue and it's the biggest

29:38

shop I've ever been in and

29:40

you go in and there must be a million

29:42

caps in there loads different colors. I went for a black

29:44

one Approve I think it's

29:47

looking pretty smart. Yeah that place think

29:49

of a sports direct On

29:51

steroids, that's really like and

29:54

it also has to be fair if you go in sports direct a cap

29:56

won't cost you north of 20 quid which I think

29:59

It's been Quite embarrassing, isn't it? I've got one, but you

30:01

know. Alright, go on, go on. What was the price on it? It

30:04

was 25 English pounds for,

30:06

which I think was 29 euros for the

30:09

black Ryder Cup cap. There isn't even a

30:11

team-specific one. If I'd have got it, that was going

30:13

to be over 30 good, and I couldn't bring myself to spend over 30

30:15

quid on a cap. So I've got a little souvenir,

30:18

but anyway. But, you know, it's our first Ryder Cup, isn't

30:20

it? And it's your first Ryder Cup, and it's your first day

30:22

at a Ryder Cup. How has it been? It's

30:25

been absolutely phenomenal. I mean, it

30:27

feels like about a week ago,

30:29

since we turned up here this morning, I

30:33

went straight to the first tee and had a look at the

30:35

first tee, and I've never seen anything like

30:37

it in golf before. I've never seen

30:40

the atmosphere. When

30:43

Tyrone and John walked out, and

30:45

the noise and the crowd, it just,

30:48

it sent shivers up my

30:50

spine. It was the most amazing

30:52

thing I've ever seen, and like the adrenaline

30:55

that the players must be feeling. There's nothing like

30:57

it in golf. There really isn't. And

31:01

having their formats and the match play formats

31:03

where guys are pressurized into

31:05

making shots, obviously

31:07

they're so good, the best players

31:09

in the world, they start making shots. And

31:13

some of the plays, some of the chippings, the putts

31:15

we've seen today are just out of this world. That's

31:18

amazing. And also some of the outfits

31:21

and vibes, for want of a better word, are probably

31:23

a bit out of this world. It's literally like a festival out

31:25

there, isn't it? Oh, it is, yeah,

31:27

yeah. Festival, we've seen everyone dressed

31:29

in yellow and blue, sort of

31:33

one-leg yellow trousers, one-leg blue trousers. They

31:35

look like minions, don't they? Minions, crazy

31:38

funky hats. I saw some astronauts

31:40

on there, which looked awful. It's 30

31:42

degrees, and the Jesus got his helmet on. All

31:45

his mates have got him up, so you can actually breathe. And

31:47

one of them had it down, and I was like, this ain't

31:49

gonna end well. To be fair, I saw

31:52

one group who were dressed as gladiators, and

31:54

they were wearing basically like a toga, which

31:56

is actually quite good for the heat, I imagine. So

31:58

they got it right. better than the astronauts

32:01

but I mean yeah we need to basically find

32:03

the best outfits over the weekend don't we but there was some really

32:05

good ones today. I also yeah I did see Tommy Fleetwood

32:08

take a picture with Caesar as well that was

32:10

pretty cool. But he's Caesar

32:12

wow. Oh mate what

32:14

a day it's been absolutely fantastic you weren't the thing I

32:17

saw today that took me back was how you

32:19

were right about the rough like when we were walking

32:21

around the things it was literally like being in an

32:23

uncut field that hadn't been touched for you know

32:25

weeks and weeks so you were right about that.

32:28

It really is it's like US Open Standard

32:30

rough. Yeah you missed the fairway you really

32:32

penalized them as you

32:34

said the scoring you've seen you've seen some crazy

32:36

scoring you know Rory and Fitzy

32:40

shot 10-under and four ball today absolutely

32:43

unbelievable but you are

32:45

gonna find problems if you hit it offline and get

32:47

in that rough I mean it is brutal.

32:49

I was thinking we should probably go and hide

32:51

some of the Beast Golf Club golf balls that we've got with us

32:54

just in the rough and it'd be quite funny if one of the players

32:56

mistakes took it with their ball and then you know

32:58

start playing with it that'd be quite fun with your face on. Imagine

33:01

Shane Lowry picks one up and thinks what

33:04

are these pictures of myself on a golf ball? That's

33:08

the dream but also let's go hide some tomorrow

33:10

and then if anyone at the Ryder Cup who listens

33:12

to the Beast Club finds them that'd be quite fun

33:14

as well wouldn't it? Oh 100% yeah I think we

33:16

should go and hide a few or even even

33:19

I wonder if we could get anyone to chuck a few out

33:21

or something like that yeah and just call some atmosphere

33:23

maybe we could get someone to chuck it out. Cole

33:26

starts on one of the vice-caps and chuck a few out

33:28

on the first tee. I'd love that. Well

33:30

mate it's an epic first day for

33:32

Europe let's see what tomorrow holds have

33:34
