This is a

0:03

crowd podcast. Hello

0:08

everyone and welcome to Beefs Golf Club.

0:10

It's Rider Cut Week and we're in Rome. It's

0:13

the most epic event in golf and

0:15

we're here to keep you up to date on everything

0:18

happening behind the scenes and on

0:20

the golf course. I'm so excited

0:22

to be here and we'll be bringing you daily

0:24

episodes over the course of this weekend.

0:27

So sit back and enjoy. This

0:29

is Beefs Golf Club at the Rider Cup. Hello

0:33

everyone. Welcome to Beefs Golf Club at

0:35

the Rider Cup. I hope you're enjoying

0:37

your weekend. I'm

0:39

sure you are if you're European because they

0:41

now hold a seven point lead

0:44

over the US. Me and producer Ryan

0:46

are here in the media center.

0:49

What an unbelievable morning mate. It's another

0:51

unbelievable morning Beef isn't it? And

0:54

I mean from what you've seen this morning you've been obviously

0:56

commentating out and how

0:58

do you explain this European performance?

1:00

It's partly the

1:02

European performance. I think

1:05

if you're Zach Johnson going

1:07

into this morning's games the last thing

1:09

you want to do is throw away a load of holes and give

1:11

Europe a lead and that's exactly what the American

1:14

team did. I mean

1:16

Scotty Scheffler and Brooks

1:18

Koepka started off double

1:20

bogey bogey double bogey and

1:23

gave Holfberg

1:24

three holes straight off the bat. You

1:27

can't be doing it against a team like that when you

1:29

need to be going out and winning the first few holes

1:31

and trying to sort of build momentum get red on the

1:33

board.

1:34

But I mean after that it's all well and good

1:37

being three up. They've played the

1:39

rest of the holes five or six under par

1:41

as well and that is phenomenal golfing foursomes.

1:44

Absolutely. I mean we'll come to the matches individual

1:46

very shortly but just can

1:48

I just say how great is it you called Holfberg

1:51

like at the beginning of the week as a great pairing

1:54

and Holfberg I like the best thing going

1:56

right at the moment.

1:58

As everyone said everyone said. to me is

2:01

generational talent. I mean, the

2:03

performance he's put in is just

2:06

out this world. I

2:08

don't think words can describe like

2:10

how gutsy that is to come straight

2:13

in with zero experience of

2:16

really anything in tournament golf,

2:19

professional golf, come straight

2:21

into this and perform like

2:23

he has. And

2:25

again, the way, the way Hovland's played as well, I mean,

2:28

it's absolutely unbelievable. We

2:30

saw it at FedEx Cup, the way he dominated

2:32

the FedEx Cup, but to come here and dominate again,

2:35

I mean, them two are putting in an absolute

2:37

performance of a lifetime. I mean, since

2:39

we're on them, we might as well talk about our second match. I mean,

2:41

so they won nine and seven,

2:44

which I believe is the biggest margin

2:46

of victory in any 18 hole match

2:48

ever in the Ryder Cup. The biggest margin

2:51

ever.

2:52

That's unbelievable, right? And also the fact that it was against

2:55

the world number one and the USPGA

2:57

champion as well. You

2:59

couldn't have predicted that at the beginning of today. No

3:01

way, no way. I, when

3:04

the, when the games come out yesterday

3:06

night, I looked at that game and I just thought, I

3:08

just thought again, is that it's going to be another really

3:11

tight game. And nine

3:13

and seven is just, it's

3:15

more than a landslide. I mean, you never

3:17

ever, well, we've never ever seen

3:19

anything like that, but it's so rare

3:22

that you see games

3:23

one more than sort of five and four.

3:26

And there's building this. Construction.

3:30

I think there's another massive

3:32

stage going up for the festival tonight, which

3:34

Andrew Cotter will be delighted with. Yes. Andrew

3:37

Cotter will be delighted. He was a drummer based 10.

3:41

I think he's requested it. This is a drummer

3:43

based 10. I mean, can having

3:45

watched that game, what happened,

3:48

you obviously mentioned the terrible start they had, but

3:51

looking at Scheffler and Kepka, was

3:53

there anything in like their body language that you saw?

3:56

How do you explain that poor performance from that beginning?

3:58

Just deflated. I mean.

4:01

Both of them will be thinking exactly what everyone's

4:03

thinking. Get off to a good start and use

4:06

6-5-6, 3 down after 3,

4:08

crowd on your back. And then

4:10

Hovberg goes birdie, birdie, birdie

4:13

straight after that. I mean, it's just

4:15

pure deflation and when you're 5 down

4:17

after 6 holes, it's so hard

4:20

to come back from that. And

4:23

like we always say, you never want to leave the door

4:25

open with the best players in the world. If

4:28

Brooks Koepke or Squaischeffler gets a sniff

4:30

of nerves or

4:32

anything to sort of bounce

4:35

off and try and find a bit of rhythm, they

4:37

just slam the door with another 4 birdies in the

4:39

row. I mean, it's incredible performance. Unbelievable.

4:42

Well, let's talk about the other matches then. So obviously match 1

4:44

was McElroy and Fleetwood against

4:47

Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. Big

4:50

start for the Europeans. They went 3-up, I think, didn't they?

4:52

I found this very strange pairing from the

4:55

US side. Jordan

4:57

Spieth hit it everywhere yesterday in the 4 ball. One

4:59

thing you've got to do around this golf course, Special Enforcer,

5:02

was hit fairways. If you start hitting

5:04

it in the rough, you can't get to the greens. It's penalising.

5:06

It's not like you can hit it

5:08

everywhere. And I found that quite funny. And

5:11

to be fair to them, after a really

5:13

rough start, they battled really

5:15

well coming in. And there was a period in

5:17

this game where the golf was off the chart around 11,

5:20

12 and 13. Rory

5:22

driving the green on 11. Now, again,

5:24

it's one of these moments where I've

5:27

always said this about Rory. He can hit shots

5:29

that a lot of us can't. He's

5:32

hit a drive. He's carried it over 300 yards

5:34

to sort of land on the front edge of this green and

5:37

make an eagle too. First eagle

5:39

on 11. And

5:42

then the next hole on 12, they've

5:44

halved in eagles as

5:46

well. For Tommy

5:48

to knock in the putt for a three and then Spieth

5:51

to reply and knock

5:53

in his putt shows the character

5:56

of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth as well. And then

5:58

to go on a birdie the next and win. the hole and

6:00

they gave a real good battle, I mean only to

6:03

lose two and one there. Hats off

6:06

to Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth for the

6:09

battle because that could have ended six and five. Absolutely.

6:12

I heard on commentary, I think it's Rory's first

6:15

time he's got three and oh in a

6:17

Ryder Cup and you could see there was a putt

6:20

on the, I think it was the 15th where

6:23

Rory holed it and there was such emotion from

6:25

him and Tommy, you could just see how much it meant. They

6:28

knew they were getting dragged into a big

6:30

dogfight, they were getting dragged into it

6:32

and you could see it, you could see

6:34

how the American team bounced

6:37

back on 16 and won the hole with a birdie

6:39

and all of a sudden it's

6:41

down the last two holes, you know, and Tommy

6:44

was left in a really awkward position for his putt

6:47

and then for Rory to hold it as well and

6:49

just sort of end the game because against these players,

6:51

like I said, you don't want to give them a chance

6:53

and they'll be walking

6:55

off that 17th going

6:58

oh, phew, like a lot of relief there. Absolutely,

7:02

absolutely. In match number three there

7:04

was Lowry and Stacker versus Homer and Harmon

7:07

and this was the first full point for the US.

7:09

What did you make of that game? I

7:13

said it earlier today, I think Max Homer's been

7:15

the best player for America

7:17

so far. I thought he'd play well yesterday.

7:20

He had good spells, hit some good shots, hold some good putts

7:23

and playing next

7:25

to Brian Harmon who will not back down from

7:27

anything, that was always going to be a tough

7:30

game for Lowry and Stacker and

7:34

just looking there, I just think they just got

7:36

outplayed, they didn't play badly at all. The

7:40

better golf won in that game and hats off

7:42

to Max Homer and Brian Harmon. As I said,

7:44

he's been my pick for the American team, the

7:47

best player so far. I mean

7:49

they had a really good few holes,

7:51

didn't they, around number 10, two birdies and

7:53

an eagle in a row and I guess when you get three points on

7:55

the board like that, is that a good confidence

7:58

boost? Is it going into the final stretch? They're

8:01

just so far behind. I mean, they've still

8:04

lost the session 3-1. They're getting

8:06

absolute hammering at the moment. I

8:08

think, I said

8:10

this session was going to be really important. If

8:12

it was 3-1 the other way, America's,

8:16

predominantly in the past, been better in four balls

8:19

and they could go in and use that momentum and I just

8:21

think, I don't see any

8:23

hope back now for America. No way. And

8:27

then the final match, Ram and Hatten

8:29

first Cantlay and Schoflait. So this went a bit

8:31

further down to the end, didn't it? What

8:33

did you make of that one? A 2-1 win for Europe. Just

8:37

wow. Just wow. Again, these

8:40

guys, as I said, I've called Cantlay

8:43

and Schoflait the unflappables. This

8:46

week, honestly, they just keep going, keep

8:48

plodding along. They're gritty, determined,

8:52

like Tyrrell and Jon as well. Tyrrell

8:56

as hold such an unbelievable

8:59

putt on 16. You

9:01

know, he's twice

9:04

the distance away, probably 12 to 15 foot away to

9:06

knock that putt in before America

9:10

have got to putt when it's all square

9:12

in the game with 3-2 play. If he misses that, I

9:14

think America, I think Xander holds that putt.

9:17

And all of a sudden, that's the great thing with match plays. Flipped

9:19

it on his head. They've missed. They've

9:21

just gone one up with 2-2 play. And then Jon Rahms

9:24

hit an absolute worldy that's nearly gone in.

9:26

Nearly another hole in. And how many times is this

9:28

guy going to do that? I know. I know. We

9:31

were watching that, didn't we? And your jaw dropped when you saw

9:33

that shot. It's just every time you think,

9:35

can he do it again? Of course he can. It's

9:38

just unbelievable. The amount of times

9:41

he produces a shot, a

9:43

chip in, just something to

9:45

either win the game or just shut the door. And

9:48

to be fair to America, Canada hit a great reply

9:50

in there. Xander, luckily, missed the putt.

9:53

And that was the end of the game. But what

9:55

a shot, man. Yeah, what a shot. Very

9:57

quick one, babe. Speaking of Patrick Cantlay. You

10:00

might find this interesting. So a friend of the pod, Jamie Weir,

10:02

obviously we had him on last night, he's

10:05

reported that there's a bit of a split

10:07

in the US camp, which has been led by

10:09

Camp Le because he believes that Ryder

10:12

Cup players should be paid. Now, he's not wearing

10:14

a team cap and apparently didn't go to the garland

10:17

dinner and is sort of sitting away from the rest of the team.

10:19

We have, we know, we don't know if that's true, we obviously,

10:21

we love and trust Jamie, but that

10:24

sounds like a bit of a shit show, doesn't it? There's a lot

10:26

going on there. Yeah. My first question...

10:29

Yeah. Why are you missing dinner? I

10:31

know, well, I mean... You're in Rome,

10:33

why are you missing dinner? That's my first question,

10:36

what is going on there? Come on, Patrick. Garland

10:38

dinner! And also,

10:41

you know, if he's in need of a cap, we've

10:43

got loads of Beast Golf Club caps, mate. We can give

10:45

him one of those and then, you know, that doesn't matter, does it? Mate,

10:47

all he had to do was ask. And what he had to do was ask,

10:49

we got loads of them. You know, there's a big hanger

10:51

there, as we discussed, a big merch shop, we could have got one of

10:53

those, but we've got Beast Golf Club hats. Shall

10:56

we drop him a message and see if he wants one? I

10:58

think we'll see if I can sneak it into his locker room.

11:01

Into his locker, so, yeah, next time he

11:04

opens it, it's just going to be play space

11:06

with him and he can pop it on and

11:08

go out and play. We got you, Patrick, the love, speech, golf

11:10

club. Yeah. Yeah. Let's try that, let's try that. But,

11:12

yeah, I mean, look, I think also there was reports that

11:14

Zach Johnson said that there had been a bit of illness and

11:16

stuff, but it's not looking good for the

11:18

US at this point, right? There's a lot

11:21

going on and, again, rumours

11:23

are rumours until you get the 100% facts.

11:26

I mean, there's a couple

11:29

things there I don't quite understand. If

11:32

he's unhappy about playing

11:35

and not being paid and doesn't want to be there

11:37

and play, if I was Zach

11:39

Johnson, I wouldn't play him. Yeah. And

11:42

that's one sort of query

11:44

I have about all the rumours. I

11:47

don't think they'd let him play if he was in that kind

11:49

of frame of mind and didn't want to be there, you know? And

11:51

I think the whole team wouldn't want him to play. So

11:53

that really is a bit bizarre. Also,

11:56

not wearing a hat. It's 30 degrees,

11:58

mate. Very hot out there. Right,

12:00

his head! His head is going

12:02

to feel so tight by the end of the day. You

12:04

know when you get a bit burnt and like your

12:07

skin dries up and as soon as

12:09

you sort of move the front of

12:11

your forehead, it hurts man. Why are you

12:13

not wearing a hat? I think we just need to help Patrick

12:15

out. Look, let's go get a Beast Gold Club hat from the

12:17

bag and then we'll give it to him this afternoon. See if

12:20

he wears it, you never know.

12:28

Right then, after another blue morning mate,

12:31

big afternoon coming and we've got

12:33

the pairings here. Should we have a little run through? Why

12:36

don't you read them out mate? So

12:38

we've got the whole Hovberg. Oh Hovberg

12:40

again. Hovberg are so

12:43

big, they've made it to the top of the

12:45

pile here and they're starting off the four

12:47

balls against Sam Burns and

12:49

Colin Morikawa. Wow, okay. I

12:52

mean Hovberg, they're just looking on

12:54

fire right now, against those two. They

12:56

are looking on fire. I mean, again,

12:59

looking at American side Sam Burns, Morikawa,

13:03

both awesome golfers as well. Both

13:05

fresh as well, need to play this morning. Like I've said,

13:08

I think again it could be another tight game. God

13:10

knows what's going to happen. It could be 9-7. I

13:12

don't know what's going to happen. These scores are crazy

13:15

man. But again, it's another really

13:18

good match up and we'll see what Hovberg

13:21

brings in the four ball. Come on Hovberg. Next

13:24

up, we've got Tommy Fleetwood and Nikolai

13:26

Hoeigard against Max Homer and Brian Harmon.

13:30

They've played the foursomes together. Zech

13:32

decided to keep them

13:35

together, which I think is very sensible.

13:37

You could see they had a good kind of relationship

13:39

against Lowry

13:42

and Straka in the morning and I think that's a wise idea.

13:45

If I was a captain, I would have kept them together. Yeah,

13:47

makes sense. We've got the Flusher

13:49

and Tommy Fleetwood and the Bomber and Hoeigard. That's

13:51

going to be again

13:53

another good pairing and just looking at

13:56

these pairings. Big John's getting a rest.

13:59

Yes. Yes, that does stand out. And

14:01

this is what we were talking about earlier

14:04

in the week. You know, tough walk, a lot of

14:07

emotion going into it. Do you have

14:09

the best, do you have to play your best players

14:12

Saturday afternoon? Yeah. Can

14:14

you create a lead and rest a few players?

14:17

Luke Donald's got that opportunity to just let

14:19

John Rahm sit out, rest and get ready for

14:21

the singles, which I think is a lovely,

14:23

lovely choice for Luke Donald. Absolutely.

14:26

Heading into the third game here, Justin Rose, Bob

14:28

McIntyre paired again. Against Justin

14:30

Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

14:33

Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, that again, yeah.

14:35

They were a lot better in the four balls. I mean, I was surprised

14:37

they played in the morning. Yeah. No

14:40

brainer that they're playing again together. They'll

14:42

want to bounce back from there. Tough competitors,

14:45

just like Rose and McIntyre. That's a

14:47

really good matchup. And last but

14:49

not least, Matt Fitzpatrick and Rory

14:51

again, versus Patrick

14:54

Candley and Wyndham Clarke. Ah, okay.

14:56

I mean, we speculated, didn't we, if Rory was going to be

14:59

rested. If they had such a good lead, Europe,

15:01

but he's putting them out again. Yeah.

15:04

Wyndham Clarke's an interesting one as well. I'm

15:07

surprised he hasn't played in

15:09

the morning. He's had another chance. I thought he did okay

15:12

yesterday as well. And it was quite surprising.

15:15

He's been left out. Let's see if Fitzy

15:17

can have another run like he did early on. I mean, that

15:19

run yesterday was phenomenal. Let's see if they

15:21

can get going and they shot around 10

15:24

under yesterday in four ball. So let's see if

15:26

they can have a repeat of that going in. Absolutely.

15:29

Well, I think it's going to be an absolutely phenomenal afternoon

15:31

and obviously Europe in prime position

15:34

at the moment. Before we go for lunch beef and

15:36

the four ball start, I had

15:38

a question for you. Have

15:40

you sampled any of the food trucks out

15:42

there at the moment? No, I haven't. I've,

15:45

as I've been walking around, I've caught wisps

15:48

of a few trucks, some good smells,

15:50

some not so good smells. I know what trucks

15:52

we should be heading to. Well, two

15:55

things on that. I mean, firstly, I was looking out earlier

15:57

to see if I could find any club sandwiches. While you comment.

16:00

So far, haven't seen any Italian club

16:03

sandwiches, that's something we maybe need to pick

16:05

up with the Ryder Cup. He's not as popular

16:07

here, and he's

16:09

a bit of a worry because I have seen a few Italian

16:11

club sandwiches in my past, and

16:14

instead of using the toasted white bread I've seen a

16:16

ciabatta being used here. Absolute

16:18

shocker, and also even worse, some

16:21

focaccia. I mean, what are you playing at man?

16:23

Come on, let's get a proper club sandwich

16:25

in there. It's just not a club sandwich, is it, if that's the case.

16:28

The other thing I was going to say, I've got a bone to pick with you, because

16:30

this morning you casually dropped

16:32

in, we were talking about the Beast Barbecue Food Truck that

16:34

was at Wentworth, and you casually dropped in, we

16:37

spoke about on the pod that Rory McElroy

16:39

had seen the food truck and commented on it, and you

16:42

casually dropped in that you'd text him and he'd replied,

16:44

and you just failed to mention it. I've

16:47

had enough of name-dropping, to be

16:49

honest. We all know the name drop that's epically failed,

16:52

and I just don't want to put myself in my position. And

16:54

I've actually done it again, because I've told you,

16:56

and I should have kept my mouth shut this morning, but

16:59

we only had about four hours sleep, and that's why

17:02

I've properly said it. You texted

17:04

him going, you wanted a bit of barbecue, did

17:06

you? And he replied saying it looked good. After

17:09

Jamie mentioned it a few weeks ago,

17:11

I just texted him out of the blue

17:13

saying, I heard you fancied

17:16

a bit of Beast Barbecue on 17 the other day, and

17:18

he was like, let me read

17:20

it for word for word. How about we do that? Word for word.

17:23

Please do. Oh, also,

17:25

by the way, speaking about that, Rory,

17:29

Ryan sometimes pressures me into dropping

17:32

a text or a call. So one day

17:34

I did call Rory and I gave him the phone,

17:36

and he just instantly

17:39

ended the call and shit himself off. I'm

17:45

not even about to say let's do it now, but he's

17:47

got a game to play, Beast. He's got a game to play. I said,

17:50

mate, rumour has it you wanted some barbecue

17:53

on 17 the other day, crying with laughter face. I got

17:56

a reply, ha ha, I definitely spied on

17:58

the Beast Barbecue stand. words

18:01

of Rory McElroy himself while he's about

18:03

to go into his fourth match of the weekend

18:06

he might just be slightly thinking about Beast BBQ

18:08

let's have that thought as we go into the four balls that's surely

18:11

yeah we got it we got to get him on at some point talk

18:13

about Beast BBQ yeah I'm sure well I'm not

18:15

sure we'll get him on but I'm sure we'll deliver him

18:17

some barbecue at some point well

18:19

in the meantime let's get on with the four ball shall we? Yes

18:21
