Cold, dark, void, restless and alone. Often, this is the state hopelessness drives us into. It consumes us like a malicious cancer clinging to every cell in our body, eating us from the inside out and killing our spirit. 

Proverbs 18:14 The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit? 

It is very easy to just give in and be carried away by the big black tide, because it's easier to let go than it is to fight because we are too weak. But just because we think we cannot fight, doesn't mean we shouldn't at least try.

Job 14:7-9 "For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its tender shoots will not cease. Though its root may grow old in the earth, and its stump may die in the ground, yet at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth branches like a plant."

Sometimes we don't even need so much to get back on our feet. Like the tree, in which just the scent of water is enough to rejuvenate it, we too need only a spark to reignite the fire in our spirit. It only depends on where our hope is rooted.

Is it in people, love, achievements or popularity? Is it on earthly things which moth and rust can destroy and thieves can steal away? Or is it in Christ, the solid ground, who cannot be shaken, and is the same yesterday today and forever?

Deuteronomy 31:8 "And the LORD, He is the one who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed." 

Exodus 14:14 "The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace."

2 Chronicles 20:17 'You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!' Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the LORD is with you."

Countless times in His Word, God has promised to be with us and to fight for us. So every moment we are tempted to lose hope, let us dive into God's Word and declare His promises over our lives. 

Jeremiah 17:7-8 "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose hope is the LORD. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but her leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit."

"Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

Romans 5:5
