0:36
Here we are with another triathlon podcast
0:38
brought to you by Mana Apparel . As always
0:41
, I'm joined by my co-hosts , Sede and Josh
0:43
, and we're going to dive into everything
0:45
going on this past week in the triathlon
0:47
world , including some fun in Canada
0:49
, a
0:57
few maple leaf flags waving after this weekend . We'll also jump into some Super Tri news and
0:59
some updates on the Olympic picks for the triathlon . There's definitely been a lot of announcements
1:01
the last little while , Some controversial
1:04
, some less surprising , but we will dive
1:06
into all of it . But let's
1:08
start with what's going on in our world . First
1:10
off , I was feeling a little left
1:13
out . This weekend in New York City I
1:15
saw you , Josh and Fede meeting up there without
1:17
me . How did that weekend
1:20
go , Josh ?
1:21
Oh , it was awesome , it was uh . So
1:23
, if you don't know
1:25
, I was down in peloton for a
1:27
big group event that I had organized to
1:29
ride with matt wilpers , uh . So
1:32
check out that wilpers episode and kind
1:34
of see what that was all about . But uh , I
1:36
had 39 bikes in the studio , so all
1:38
of the bikes at the peloton studio brought people
1:40
that never been . And then I saw
1:43
that our buddy Fede was in
1:45
New York trying to catch some Yankees games . So
1:48
I asked him where he was staying and
1:50
he was literally like a couple blocks from where
1:52
the Peloton studios were and where I was
1:54
. And I was in and out , because I had to get back to
1:56
Boston for my race yesterday morning and
1:59
we had a window where we could meet up
2:01
. So I got to give Fede a quick
2:03
tour of the Peloton studios and and
2:06
got to meet his girlfriend and uh got
2:08
to chat and hang out for a little bit
2:10
and and finally meet each other in person
2:12
. So it was uh really cool and
2:15
uh we didn't want to break
2:17
up . But he had to get to the uh to
2:19
Yankee stadium and I had to get on the road
2:21
because I had a four-hour drive back .
2:25
Oh , sounds like fun . Fede , what brought you up
2:27
there ?
2:30
You said you're going to see some baseball
2:32
. Yeah
2:36
, so I decided to do a little trip to New York , do a few things over there . And also it just happened
2:38
that the Yankees were playing and you
2:41
know , grew up watching them , supporting them , so
2:43
of course I needed to
2:45
catch a game and , yeah
2:48
, it was just amazing that Josh was in town
2:50
and it was amazing
2:52
. Got to meet him , his wife , and
2:55
he seems like he runs the
2:57
whole Peloton company . Everybody's
3:00
high-fiving him saying hello . So
3:04
, yeah , it was cool to watch and
3:06
those guys of Peloton , they are doing
3:08
an amazing job . Just
3:10
incredible how big they
3:13
have become . And this is not a sponsored
3:15
ad or anything
3:17
. Just I tip
3:20
my hat to those guys because they're doing an amazing
3:22
job and they are , you know , like
3:24
Josh mentioned on that day day , they are creating
3:26
triathletes out of nowhere , really
3:28
, uh , out of just indoor training
3:31
systems and group classes
3:33
, and I think this is a very exciting
3:35
avenue to explore for triathlon
3:38
coaching and development that
3:41
you don't need to be 24-7
3:44
with a coach on site . You
3:47
could have workouts recorded
3:49
and , as long
3:51
as a person is willing and knows the
3:54
metrics that they're working with , they could become
3:56
very good athletes . So , yeah
3:58
, it was amazing and of
4:00
course now we started talking
4:02
on that day
4:05
and somebody just signed
4:07
up for 70.3 Maine .
4:10
Yes , we did it .
4:12
So we're going to see each other again in a couple of weeks . There
4:15
we go .
4:17
That's wicked . Sounds
4:20
like lots of fun . But
4:22
, Josh , what else happened on your weekend
4:25
? Sounds like you had lots going on . Yeah , so it was actually lots of fun . But , josh , what else happened on your weekend ? Sounds like you had lots going on .
4:26
Yeah , so it was actually the week
4:28
started . I got to go into Boston for
4:30
a kickoff event We'll talk a little bit more about it with
4:33
Super Try and got to hang out with some
4:35
cool athletes and meet Tim Don and
4:38
some others involved in Super League and then had
4:41
the big weekend Saturday at
4:43
Peloton , did a ride and then I
4:45
did a run and a
4:47
hike and then met Fed
4:49
and then hopped back in the
4:51
car and hustled
4:53
back up to Boston . I didn't want to
4:55
bring my bike to New York and have it sitting in the car
4:57
overnight , so I had to stop back at home
4:59
. The race is about an hour
5:02
hour and a half from my house , so we chose to
5:04
get a hotel a little closer . Um
5:07
, with uh I think we had to be in transition
5:09
about six , six 30 in the morning , so we
5:11
got uh , got to the hotel around 10 o'clock that
5:14
night and felt good and
5:16
it was a sprint try . So this was the first triathlon
5:18
and there's a post I just put up Um , this was the first
5:20
triathlon I ever did two years ago this weekend
5:23
. This was the first triathlon I ever
5:25
did two years ago this weekend . So I dropped my time nine
5:28
minutes last year and then this
5:30
year I dropped it another 4.33
5:32
. And
5:36
the A goal was podium and B goal
5:38
was to PR and get sub 110
5:41
.
5:41
And I got 108.01 .
5:47
And then , when I finally got on my phone and and had the guts to look at the results , I realized
5:49
I was 17 seconds behind and
5:51
had closed like a two minute gap on the run
5:53
to the third place . Guy
5:56
off the bike
5:58
. And I
6:00
didn't puke at the finish line , as my coach had asked
6:02
me to do , so I probably had another
6:04
17 or 18 seconds in
6:06
my legs , so it's like ah
6:09
.
6:10
That's the worst when you're so close .
6:11
And you know , if you had known
6:13
you could have done it right , I
6:16
think the difference in our T1 was
6:18
like 18 seconds , like right there .
6:21
Time to practice those transitions .
6:24
I made up for it in T2 . I had a really
6:26
fast T2 , which was awesome . I
6:28
went no socks , baby powder in the
6:30
shoes and it was a pouring rainy day . It started
6:32
pouring when we were in the water . So
6:35
stay away from me if you want to go to a dry race
6:38
. This year . The only race
6:40
I'm doing is pouring . But
6:43
I'm getting pretty good at it and had
6:45
a really good swim Again . That
6:48
DeBoer mono wetsuit is phenomenal
6:50
Night and day . I just knew . I
6:52
had a good swim in Springfield and
6:54
I got to the water just confident , feeling good
6:57
and I looked at the pictures
6:59
of the start shoot and
7:01
I'm like in the back row two years ago
7:03
and then I'm kind of in the middle last year
7:05
and then this year I was like nudging people
7:07
out of my way , like no dude , I'm
7:11
getting to that buoy first . And sure
7:13
enough I was like second or third to that first
7:15
first buoy and got on
7:17
some feet and came out of the water fourth
7:19
or fifth in my age group , which
7:21
that's huge for the three
7:23
of us to be up there and and see
7:26
the leaders , um , and and
7:28
then I fumbled with the transition , getting
7:30
the wetsuit off and um took
7:32
a quick , quick ketone shot got on my bike
7:34
and um just started
7:36
running trains . We we were like the sixth
7:39
wave , so there were five waves we had to work
7:41
through some of them being novice , so that made it a little
7:43
tight on the roadways and it's an open
7:45
course . It's not fully closed , but some
7:48
things I can clean up there . My bike computer didn't turn
7:50
on um , so apparently I charged it for
7:53
like a day and a half , but when I unplugged
7:55
the charger it also turns the
7:57
garmin on and
7:59
it completely drained itself . I forgot to actually
8:01
power it off um , so lesson
8:04
learned there , um , but it was nice to go off of perceived
8:06
exertion too , um , and
8:09
even though we had some power targets , I think I got there
8:11
and I definitely had to power up on a
8:13
few moves to get by people
8:15
going too slow or riding three wide , but
8:17
felt good on the run
8:19
and and negative split of the run
8:21
and and finished with a really strong
8:24
finish past like five or six people in the in the final
8:26
shoot and there was one more
8:28
I just didn't get . I guess Next
8:31
year , next year is the podium , so it's
8:34
, it feels good to be that close
8:36
and do it all and just kind of do that
8:38
recap post and think about where I've come in
8:40
two years and being here and
8:42
and all this stuff's just crazy
8:44
and it was a
8:46
good weekend for sure . And
8:49
then Janine raced the relay
8:52
and she did the 5K and set her
8:54
new 5K PR post ACL
8:56
. So it was a good day , good weekend
8:58
for the family .
9:00
That is wicked and it's so cool to have an event like that
9:02
where you can just see , year after year , the time that goes
9:04
in it's paying off . You're getting faster , you're feeling
9:06
better , you're getting more confidence , you're pushing up to the
9:08
front , which is huge . But man
9:11
, I know that that few seconds is tough when
9:13
you're that close . But you smashed your previous time
9:15
new PR . It's wicked to see
9:17
lots more PRs to come .
9:26
I have a feeling over the next next . While it's nice to be in the running category now , like that
9:28
was like yeah , I think I was fifth in every one of my age group , but the run has come
9:30
so far and it's like and you can see where the people
9:32
who are up at the top podium are
9:34
in the top five . They're all good runners
9:36
and I'm putting myself in that category
9:38
. That was the one that was like I've gone from like an 844
9:41
down to a . I think this one was like almost
9:43
sub seven . So it was like we're getting there
9:45
.
9:46
Bike for show , run for dough that's what they always
9:48
say .
9:49
Yeah , that's what they say .
9:52
How about you Fede ? What have you been up to ?
9:55
Well , besides getting to know the
9:57
mayor of Boston in New York
9:59
, the
10:02
holder of the keys of the city , the
10:04
holder of
10:07
the keys of the city I
10:14
ran a 5K in Brooklyn just to test out the legs
10:16
, see where I'm at , and I'm happy to report that
10:18
I was pain-free , nothing hurt . I
10:22
mean , I had a goal in mind
10:24
and I just didn't want to run over
10:27
the teens , so
10:30
I was like , as long as I'm in the teens I'm
10:33
good to go , and I
10:35
think I ran up 1940-something
10:38
, which is , yes
10:40
, it's okay to be back , but
10:42
a lot of work to do , a lot of work to do and
10:45
gradually picking up the
10:48
pace and the volume and everything . But
10:50
yeah , it was amazing . I got
10:52
to run it with my partner and then she's
10:55
slowly getting into this running
10:57
habit , so that was fun to share
11:00
with her . But
11:02
yeah , it was cool . It
11:05
was also nice because it's like a 7 pm
11:07
race , so that
11:10
meant no , no , uh , alarm
11:12
clocks in the morning . Um , yeah
11:15
, yeah , it was fun , uh
11:17
, and so the yankees win
11:19
. So , josh , we missed you , of course
11:21
. So we , we need to get a team
11:23
reunion soon . But
11:26
yeah , happy
11:28
to share that . I'm back
11:31
again . You know , running
11:33
pain-free .
11:35
That's so good , and he brought the heat to Mexico
11:37
, from Mexico to New York too . So it was probably
11:39
warmer in New York than it was in Mexico normally .
11:44
Yeah , that's so true . I think right now here in Mexico
11:47
city we are at I don't know , 85
11:49
ish degrees , and New York was like
11:51
95 .
11:53
Oh geez , Not often you hear that
11:55
reversal .
11:58
Yeah Wild .
12:00
That's awesome .
12:01
How about you ? Jenna how was your weekend .
12:07
Yeah , that's awesome . How about you , jenna ? How was your weekend ? Yeah , so this weekend was pretty quiet
12:09
, but I had a pretty good weekend , the one before . We didn't get a chance to
12:11
catch up last week , but , uh , got my first multi-sport
12:13
race of the season in last weekend , and
12:15
this one's fun . It's a kind of grassroots
12:17
race here that I do every year . Um
12:20
, so , one of the few races that
12:22
I'll do more than once . Usually I like
12:24
to find new locations , new courses , just
12:26
keep it interesting . But went
12:28
to the Shnook Multisport Festival
12:30
and , yeah , came away with
12:32
a win in the duathlon , so that's always
12:34
fun . Um , yeah
12:36
, it's just great to be out there in that race energy
12:39
again , you kind of forget about
12:41
it and how much fun it is to be around other people
12:43
who are just as crazy as you . Go out and
12:45
do something like this on a Sunday or Saturday
12:47
morning and get after it . Although
12:50
so , initially I was planning on racing
12:53
the duathlon on Saturday , and then there was the gravel
12:56
Canadian champs on the Sunday , I
12:58
missed the registration deadline . I'm
13:01
so used to like these races . Usually you can register
13:03
up until like the last minute and stuff , but no , apparently
13:06
it closed significantly earlier
13:08
than that and I
13:10
so would won the master's category
13:14
and it was totally a day that I would love
13:16
. It was cold , it was rainy , it was windy
13:18
, it was just one of those gritty days like
13:20
, oh , I think , one of the few
13:22
people sitting inside where it's warm thing , I wish I'd
13:24
rather be out there . Now
13:27
here's the disclaimer everyone .
13:29
Jenna's been doing this for a long time . You can't just
13:31
show up and win races , like she does Most
13:36
of us . It takes a little bit more work . This
13:39
athlete can just show up and win . Oh
13:41
wait , I could have won that race if I had registered
13:43
in time .
13:46
Yeah , I've been doing this for a little while . Actually , it was funny
13:48
. I just got a Facebook reminder
13:50
. My first triathlon
13:53
was like what was it ? Now
13:55
? It'd be 12
13:57
years ago , yeah 12 years ago
13:59
. My first race was
14:01
Ironman , buffalo Springs 70.3
14:03
. And I've got all the memories and
14:05
pictures from that , along with some
14:08
pictures of some pretty nasty blisters on
14:10
my feet . But that was my first
14:12
open water swim in a wetsuit and
14:14
a first triathlon . So another
14:16
case of do as I say , not
14:19
as I do . But , after suffering
14:21
in 95 degree heat in Texas
14:24
, I was absolutely hooked on this sport
14:26
. And then , apparently the same weekend was
14:28
Ironman Ireland , where I was paddling in
14:30
the rain and the wind , loving it .
14:33
Something about that weekend rain , I guess .
14:35
Apparently just everything is that weekend
14:37
and weirdly I was
14:39
funny because I was seeing the pictures back to back and it
14:42
was my race number in the first one was 53
14:44
. My race number at Ireland
14:46
was 531
14:49
it's kind of cool , yeah
14:52
, so number this weekend was 25 .
14:54
I was like everyone's like what did you do ? Are you like in
14:56
the elite field ? I was like yeah . I
14:58
was like no , I think I just hit registration because I'm not missing
15:01
that there you go
15:03
.
15:03
I think my number this weekend was 135 . It
15:05
was really just
15:08
the same numbers over and over again . But no
15:10
, it was a lot of fun just getting back in that race atmosphere
15:13
. I I love it just being around people
15:15
and seeing you know athletes of all ability
15:17
levels from doing their first events to
15:19
you know trying to compete from podiums
15:21
and all that . It's just just fun to
15:23
be back there . So it was really really good
15:25
.
15:26
It is . We talk about the community aspect
15:29
of it all , like the vibe at races
15:31
and it's I mean running races
15:33
and mountain bike races , anything . A lot
15:35
of these communities are so small . You see the same people
15:37
over and over again , like you've been to this race every
15:39
year and and and having that apples
15:41
and apples . I have always talked about that . I love that
15:43
aspect of triathlon because you don't
15:46
get it going from 70.3 to 70.3
15:48
. The courses are all different , but
15:50
when you go to the same place and you see the same people
15:52
, it was cool . I mean I got to race with
15:54
Nick yesterday too , which
15:57
was awesome , so that was the first time sharing a course with
15:59
him . And then I saw he's done the
16:01
race before and , like two years ago , like
16:04
28 year old Nick Lamb , like stud . Nick
16:06
Lamb had his
16:08
his time two years ago . It
16:11
was only 13 seconds faster than my time this year
16:13
.
16:14
I was like oh , look at this old man
16:16
yeah . Nick's
16:18
another one of our teammates at the uh Mono
16:20
endurance team , so check it out
16:22
. We've got a pretty awesome group there .
16:32
He did a road bike .
16:32
This year though . So and he still finished
16:35
like he finished fourth as well
16:38
, oh man , that's always brutal , yeah
16:40
, but yeah , and that
16:42
, nothing else too crazy going on training
16:44
away . I have to . Sadly , I'm going
16:47
to list my factor hands . Oh , this
16:49
afternoon it's time to let
16:51
it go . Now I've raced on my my
16:53
new argon e119 . I
16:55
am absolutely obsessed with it . So I
16:57
have got like five bikes at the moment and
17:00
need to get rid of a few because it's just starting
17:02
to get ridiculous at this
17:04
point . But
17:06
let's get into some
17:08
racing that's a little bit faster than ours
17:10
. There are a few pro races this weekend
17:13
and , like you said , a bit of canadian
17:15
domination , which I'm never upset
17:17
to hear about . But that a
17:19
why don't you tell us what was going on this
17:21
weekend ?
17:24
Yeah , so this weekend we have just
17:26
won a pro race
17:28
at 70.3 Mont-Tremblant and
17:31
this is a very iconic race
17:33
on the
17:35
calendar . However , it has
17:38
been struggling
17:40
the past few years . I don't know if you guys remember
17:42
, but uh , last year they had
17:44
a few issues with fires .
17:46
uh , I think I or like
17:49
moths or something like that
17:51
, that were yeah , there was a wildfire
17:53
, smokes and then you saw , like this
17:55
apocalyptic view of all these like bugs
17:57
and moths , just dead
17:59
, just weird yeah
18:02
, that was very weird and and this year
18:04
it wasn't like
18:07
no fire .
18:09
Yeah , it wasn't fire , it wasn't smooth
18:12
sailing either . It was the complete opposite Just
18:14
downpouring rain 24-7
18:17
. They had to shorten the swim to I believe
18:19
it was just like a K or like
18:22
under a K , god
18:24
knows what was the exact distance
18:26
, because they just took out a couple of buoys
18:29
and they said just swim . And
18:31
they just , yeah . They
18:33
rounded it up at like a K or a bit
18:35
under a K . We
18:38
had the likes of Lionel Sanders , ben
18:40
Kanute , jackson Laundrie
18:42
, chris Leiferman , ben Kanute , jackson Laundrie , chris Leiferman , matthew
18:45
Marquardt , who has been doing
18:47
amazing , amazing stuff coming from the age
18:49
group ranks , as well as Justin
18:51
Riley , and we saw
18:53
the Cornell Lionel taking the win with
18:56
an impressive 113.47
18:58
run and finishing in 335.11
19:01
. Second place was
19:03
Ben Kanute in 337.29
19:06
, so two minutes behind Lionel
19:08
, and on third place , and very surprisingly
19:10
, matty Marquardt . Not to say that he's
19:12
not a good athlete , but
19:16
I mean he was faster than Jackson Laundrie
19:18
and Chris Leiferman . So for
19:20
somebody who came up the age group
19:22
ranks , he knows what he's doing on
19:25
the pro field . He
19:31
looked very strong on the run .
19:33
He really did . It was great
19:35
to see everyone pushing and Ben
19:37
Canute passed him at one point . He tried to
19:39
hang on , he just didn't let
19:42
Ben go and ended up being seconds behind
19:44
him . That was really fun to see , cause that
19:46
is not easy to do near the end of a race , when you're
19:48
suffering , when you get past to try
19:50
to stick on them for a while . That
19:53
takes the mental grit for sure
19:55
. But it was great to see Ben Knute have a great
19:57
race out there and see Lionel
19:59
be back , can
20:01
we say ?
20:06
Yeah , I guess , yeah , I guess he's never away . Huh , lionel , he
20:09
says he's back , but yeah
20:11
, he's good .
20:13
I think he's in a good place .
20:16
Yeah , with a very special
20:19
advisor . I told
20:21
you guys a couple of weeks ago that
20:23
Jan is the
20:25
only one that Lionel
20:27
was going to be able to listen to , so
20:30
maybe he's listening to Jan's
20:32
advice and taking it as Godspell
20:35
, because he definitely executed a
20:37
very well planned
20:39
out race .
20:41
Definitely Especially
20:44
race
20:50
, definitely , especially like no , it was . Uh , I mean , you said it too , gentlemen to
20:52
see ben like who struggled , like he's all right said this season
20:54
and to see him come out . I don't think anyone
20:56
would have picked him for the podium in this race based on
20:58
the year . He's had and and we probably
21:00
all would have had jackson up there
21:03
, matthew Marquardt's , more of the
21:05
longer full distance and
21:08
to have him in the two of them like that
21:10
was a crazy run that they had and
21:12
back and forth , and back and forth and pushing each other
21:14
. And then Justin man , that kid
21:16
throws down power on the bike for
21:18
a former age group . He was hanging
21:20
with Lionel on the bike , no problem for
21:22
the most part .
21:23
Even though Lionel was shaped legs , yeah
21:25
.
21:28
Lionel's , saving him 10 watts 10
21:33
watts .
21:34
Yeah , you know what , though , with the form
21:36
Lionel's in with this race and stuff , it
21:39
was a solid field out there , but I would have loved to
21:42
see how he would have gone at the T100 in
21:44
San Francisco , like
21:50
just kind of the way he's getting things dialed in , and with the same situation with the swim where
21:52
he would have been up there with like sam long and stuff . That would have been fun to
21:54
see how it would go down . Now the technical bike
21:56
he's definitely talked a lot about how he's indoors
21:58
all the time , but would have been fun to
22:01
see yeah
22:03
, I think him Like Oceanside .
22:05
We know he had a phenomenal swim and
22:07
there's no breaks in the Oceanside swim . He
22:10
got a break in the swim this time and
22:12
the one thing he hasn't been able to do was
22:15
maintain some of that swim training he had been doing
22:17
because of the injury too . So he's been biking
22:19
and running . He probably cut a little
22:21
bit of a break with the swim shortened
22:23
, but you never know
22:25
, I think he's just . He's just way
22:27
above and beyond anyone else on the bike
22:29
and his runs phenomenal right now .
22:33
That was really fun to watch . Definitely Good
22:35
race , except for the whole . I don't know if it
22:37
happened for you guys , but watching it on outside
22:40
, all of a sudden there's a bunch of guys on a
22:42
boat talking about fishing and I'm like what
22:44
is happening here ? They cut
22:46
the feed partway through and started playing
22:49
some other random fishing show
22:51
, so
22:55
it , yeah , missed a bit of the race with that , ended up having to get a VPN and go
22:58
see the Ironman stream Because we can't see that
23:00
in Canada and the US otherwise
23:02
. But that was random
23:05
.
23:08
I just kind of , like I saw people
23:10
commenting , I just kind of chucked it up to
23:12
. Maybe it was like weather problems or whatever , because it
23:14
was nasty there , I mean it poured
23:17
.
23:17
It turns out . So when I put the VPN
23:19
on , I could still see the race just through the Ironman
23:21
feed . It was yeah
23:23
, outside like screwed up the programming somewhere
23:27
. I guess they should really it
23:29
was nice and it was just on YouTube and Facebook
23:31
live and stuff . At least we got to see the race
23:33
sit . I feel like there's been a lot
23:35
of screw-ups with outside
23:38
, like it . Just it seems like it comes up pretty
23:41
regularly , it's not a one-off
23:43
.
23:45
Yeah , and I mean I do get
23:47
that . It's a free streaming service
23:49
that they offer for Iron man , but
23:51
that does not mean that they need to cram like
23:53
a gazillion ads in between
23:56
.
23:57
I thought Iron man was bad .
23:59
My God point
24:08
three , race . I mean , it's not . I mean , lionel did this in three and a half hours
24:11
, all right , so you've got four , and a half hours of legit coverage that we need in the
24:13
men's five hours in the women's right .
24:14
Come on , we don't need that many ads makes
24:17
me appreciate the t100 even more when
24:19
I'm like sitting there for a two
24:22
minute ad break every 10 minutes
24:24
yep anyways
24:28
. So , uh , what about the women's race
24:30
?
24:30
we had some fun over there as well we
24:33
had a lot of fun on the
24:35
women's race . We saw canadian
24:37
domination , like in the likes of paula
24:39
finley , who she's been on
24:41
a high roll , especially with her teaching
24:43
ability , winning the canadian national
24:46
championship and um , yeah
24:48
, she was just away from
24:50
everyone clocking a 4.01
24:53
, so just almost
24:55
cracked the four-hour barrier . I mean , yes
24:57
, it was a shortened swim but it was amazing
25:00
what Paula did on second
25:02
place . Yeah , I mean , you could . You
25:04
can see Paula's strength on
25:06
the bike because Tamara Jewett
25:09
is a very fast runner and she ran
25:11
a 1.16.13 and that
25:13
wasn't enough to catch Paula and
25:16
that was almost four minutes slower
25:19
than Paula's finishing time . So
25:21
you could see that Paula was riding on a
25:23
different level . And on
25:25
third place we had , from Australia , salthouse
25:28
, who's who . She's been very consistent
25:30
throughout this whole pro series
25:32
. I think she podium as well in
25:35
70.3 boulder . A
25:37
fourth place from australia as well
25:39
. We had grace tech and
25:42
yeah , it was a very exciting race . But I
25:45
mean kudos to tamra for run
25:47
1.16 and then the way
25:49
Paula is riding a bike right now
25:51
is very , very scary yeah
25:54
, it was wicked if anyone
25:56
didn't hear .
25:56
Paula had her fair share of
25:59
controversy going into the event . So
26:01
the plan was to do the Canadian National
26:03
Time Trial Championships on
26:06
the Friday it was Friday , yeah
26:08
. And then to go race 70.3 Mont-Tremblant Time trial championships on the Friday it was Friday , yeah , it was two months before , yeah
26:10
. And then to go race 70.3 Mont-Tremblant
26:13
and her bike got
26:15
lost in transit . She's like the day
26:17
before the race trying to hunt down anyone who can
26:19
find her bike for her and get it over there
26:21
. And they end up getting it the day
26:23
before the event and having to drive four
26:26
hours to the location to do the
26:28
time trial championships . She
26:30
gets up , does the time trial nationals
26:32
and wins that for the third time
26:34
in a row , which is crazy
26:37
impressive , and then goes on her merry
26:39
way to 70.3 triplot
26:41
and wins that as well . So
26:43
it's funny , I do . I
26:45
put out the press releases for Cycling Canada
26:47
and I so wanted to put in there Paul
26:50
Finley wins the TT and then
26:53
70.3
26:56
. But yeah , apparently
26:58
the cyclists aren't as interested in that .
27:00
I thought it was pretty badass one
27:04
of the other things I saw too , and she did all this without
27:06
Eric there with her , like usually , like a
27:08
lot of her good performances he's there and actually it seems like recently a lot of her good performances he's there and actually it
27:10
seems like recently a lot of her good performances he
27:12
hasn't been there . So
27:14
maybe change of guard there . But he
27:16
did send with her two
27:19
different chains , one for the TT and
27:21
one for the 70.3
27:23
race . Do you guys want to kind of explain
27:25
to the listeners , like why they might've
27:28
done that ?
27:31
That's a good question . Actually , I will say the bike tech
27:33
, to that degree I'm not as
27:35
informed on , unless she was changing
27:37
out uh gearing between the
27:39
two races . I'm not sure if she did anything there
27:42
yeah , I would .
27:43
I would imagine it was probably a different chain ring
27:45
as well too , with the flat
27:48
typically TT course . As opposed
27:50
to Mont-Tremblant , it's
27:52
got a little bit of elevation in it .
27:55
Definitely . Yeah , I'm guessing that would probably
27:57
be the reason , but yeah , I'm not too sure on that one . Otherwise
27:59
, Interesting . I
28:01
know it was great to see that
28:03
run with Tamara Jewett . Like she hasn't
28:07
been kind of in the ranks
28:09
for the last little while here , so great to see that run
28:11
coming back . I think she was over
28:13
eight minutes down on the bike so
28:16
she definitely ran her way up into the podium , which
28:18
is awesome to see .
28:23
And even Ellie tried to stay with her kind of like Matthew with Ben and you got Tamara and Ben both having
28:25
awful seasons in their books and
28:27
both of them having phenomenal runs and
28:30
second-place finishes out of
28:33
nowhere . Yeah , and Canada
28:35
won too on the women's side . And
28:37
yeah , like Fede said , ellie Salthouse has had a pretty
28:40
good season . I think that moved her up to ninth in
28:42
the overall standings .
28:44
There was one tough
28:47
.
28:47
I saw Aliceberts is having a hard time dealing
28:50
. She got a five minute drafting penalty
28:52
and she said it was was her fault and
28:54
so you take away five minutes . And
28:56
she was probably I don't know one of the
28:58
top two or three bike splits anyways
29:01
without that . And then that puts her in contention
29:03
and she still moved up to eighth in
29:05
the overall standings . But that's huge for
29:08
somebody who's just trying to drop in another 70.3
29:10
when they're again another full-distance-focused
29:14
athlete . So tough for
29:16
her . But I think she's trying to take the lessons learned
29:18
out of it .
29:20
Yeah , there was some talk too if Ellie could possibly
29:22
end up in the top 10 of the Ironman Pro
29:24
Series just to accept her 70.3s . So
29:27
we're really curious to see if
29:29
that works out there . If she's performing consistently
29:32
, it makes sense that she could .
29:35
She absolutely could If somebody misses
29:37
. I mean , look what happened to Kat
29:40
she did a full but had
29:42
to drop out right , so that could happen to
29:44
people that are maybe in the top 10 .
29:46
And then you get somebody like Ellie doing like 8,000
29:49
70.3s and having five
29:51
good results , she's good to go , yeah
29:54
it was fun to see some
29:56
good racing too was the front
29:58
runners were definitely off the front and running away
30:00
with it , but it was nice to see we got a little
30:02
bit of coverage of what was going on behind
30:04
so we can see some of those podium placings
30:06
and what actually happened back there . So kudos
30:09
them for showing a little bit more of that
30:11
, because , yeah , right now it
30:13
just seems like we have a few races
30:15
where there's someone just going off the front .
30:17
You never see them again , so it's
30:19
interesting if we got something else to watch in there yeah
30:24
absolutely definitely , definitely
30:26
a good weekend of what we
30:28
hadn't really expected to be that big of a
30:30
race . We knew lionel was coming back
30:32
, but uh , they made it entertaining
30:34
for sure they did
30:37
.
30:37
It was good to see . Well , let's
30:39
go into our social media and
30:41
what the f post of the week here ? Josh
30:43
, we'll start with you . What do you got ? What's
30:45
going on at socials ?
30:47
Well , mine's going to kind of preempt one
30:49
of the Olympic results
30:51
that are trial teams that we're
30:53
going to talk about . But I don't know if anyone saw
30:55
Taylor Reid's post from New
30:57
Zealand earlier
31:00
today and we've seen
31:02
some upset and disappointed
31:05
posts and results . He didn't
31:07
let anything hold back . He didn't hold
31:09
anything back on this post . He
31:11
literally has no clue how he didn't make the
31:13
New Zealand team and
31:15
I definitely recommend checking
31:18
out the post and giving it a read and
31:20
giving him some kudos or support
31:22
or your feedback . Let us know
31:24
how you guys all feel . But yeah , check that
31:26
post out , taylor Reed , nz and
31:28
a tough , tough way for him
31:30
. He's had a good go at it . But we'll talk a little bit
31:32
more about that on the Olympic
31:35
discussion of the pod .
31:37
Yeah , disappointing for sure . He did a lot of
31:39
work for the team
31:41
to get those spots , to make sure that they were up in the
31:43
rankings , to not get that
31:46
and have it be left down to discretionary
31:48
choices . It's got gotta be
31:50
hard , especially like he's had such . He mentions in his post
31:52
that he had some of the fastest
31:54
splits in the mixed relay which
31:56
you would have thought for sure he's a lock in there and
31:58
um , yeah , unfortunately they
32:00
have decided to go a different
32:03
way , which is really unfortunate
32:06
, but you know there's it's
32:08
a good bad problem when you got some talent and have to pick
32:11
between people , but it was
32:13
, yeah , would have been good to see him in there . Well
32:18
, let's move on to what the
32:20
f and this
32:22
has to do with someone that we talk about quite often
32:24
on the podcast . Uh , last year it
32:26
was mostly because he was on every start list
32:28
, everywhere , regardless of distance , but
32:31
this time it could be because we
32:34
might not see him on many more triathlon
32:36
start lists in the future . But Christian
32:39
Blumenfeld . There is a lot
32:41
of rumors going around that he is close to signing
32:43
a three-year
32:45
contract with the world
32:47
tour cycling team , jayko Alula . So
32:50
is Blumenfeld moving
32:52
out of triathlon after the Olympics ? Is
32:54
that why he's trying to get this last Kona
32:56
spot to see what he can do at the Ironman world
32:58
championships ? Will he go
33:01
entirely to cycling and be done
33:03
with triathlon , or will
33:05
he try to do a camp work where he kind of has
33:07
a foot in both camps
33:09
at the end of the day ? Really
33:11
curious to see where this goes . But what do you guys
33:13
think Is he going to go all-in on cycling or
33:15
try to do both ?
33:22
I don't know . I think it's
33:24
a case of let's see
33:26
how it goes and we'll decide
33:28
from there . Probably he's
33:30
going to enter a couple of one-day races
33:33
and see what happens . Maybe some TTing
33:35
, but
33:38
the way Christian's
33:41
physique is built
33:43
, he wouldn't have a
33:45
lot of chance when it comes with
33:47
the smaller , lighter guys , because
33:50
he's a very muscular guy and we
33:52
know in cycling , watts per kilo and going
33:54
uphill is where
33:56
they make their money . So maybe
33:59
it's a case of they're using
34:01
him as a domestique and maybe
34:04
he loves to push himself . Maybe
34:07
he loves to push himself
34:09
. Probably
34:13
the amount of races or victories he's going to have cycling is not going to be compared to
34:16
what he does in triathlon , but I believe this is
34:18
like a win-win because Christian loves
34:20
to push himself and cycling
34:22
teams are well . Now
34:25
Jacob is going to use that massive
34:27
, massive VO2 to pull their guys up
34:29
front and then have them fresh
34:31
for the big , big climbs
34:33
. So yeah , we'll see . Definitely
34:36
exciting , I you know . Personally
34:38
, I think Gustav more of a cyclist
34:41
than Christian , but yeah
34:44
, it's definitely going to be interesting to see what
34:46
happens . I don't know what Josh
34:48
and you think about it .
34:51
My initial reaction is there's a lot of ties
34:53
to
34:55
his current team , the technology
34:58
, with the Sentara technology
35:00
. The cycling team is already tied
35:02
in with them . They all train up in
35:04
Endor together . There
35:07
was a natural overlap there which
35:10
, at the level he's at
35:12
in triathlon , it would be weird
35:15
to see him just drop it and go
35:17
cycling full-time . And fede brought up a lot of good
35:19
points . But we also know that
35:21
when the norwegians
35:24
get specific for an
35:26
event or they get specific
35:28
for for one big race , they
35:30
they dial it in . So maybe they
35:32
want to see where they can take him and what can they
35:34
do with the human body and human performance and
35:36
and and he's certainly
35:39
been willing to learn it all . He's
35:41
a I mean he's , he's
35:43
a brainiac when it comes to this stuff , stuff
35:45
too . It's not like he's just the guinea pig
35:47
. He wants to know everything that's going
35:49
on and be involved and
35:51
help make a lot of the decisions that are being
35:53
made with Gustav
35:56
and Olaf and the whole
35:58
team . So I
36:00
wouldn't push it past him , but my guess
36:02
is he's still going to balance it and maybe
36:04
go the Cam War for it .
36:07
Yeah , that's what I'd assume in there too , and
36:09
while he's definitely not a world tour gc contender
36:12
for by any means , um
36:14
, you definitely see him on some of the classics and some of
36:16
those one day hard races where it's just
36:18
about running through and having that engine
36:21
that he does have , which is absolutely incredible
36:23
. But I could see him as the lead out for some
36:25
of those , um , some of those bigger
36:27
stage races , just pulling everyone
36:30
along but still has to make it around . I'm curious
36:32
to see , I guess
36:34
, basically what his bike handling skills are
36:36
, cause riding in a . Peloton is a whole
36:38
different beast than riding
36:41
on your own on a TT bike . Like
36:43
those guys are close
36:45
and I know he does ITU , but
36:48
that's like 40 guys all
36:50
together . You're talking like a
36:52
couple hundred together , all closely packed
36:54
and riding even tighter , with some technical
36:56
courses and stages , not some parking
37:00
lots and streets made technical
37:02
by cones . I'd be curious
37:04
to see how he does in some of those races . But you
37:07
know what you never know with Louis Veltin
37:09
, it's always an adventure just to watch and
37:11
see what happens .
37:14
Yeah , I mean , and like Josh
37:16
mentioned , like these guys are very scientific
37:18
, so maybe all I was
37:20
like wait a minute . Taylor Neve
37:22
is going to two disciplines
37:25
in the Olympics , why can't we ? So
37:28
maybe this is a way of saying
37:30
come on , we can do better than this
37:32
In 2028 , we're
37:34
going to do the triathlon and cycling
37:37
and maybe some other random events
37:39
. So maybe this is this way of
37:41
testing things out and
37:44
start , you know , mapping
37:46
the road for 2028 .
37:50
Yeah , you know he saw Taylor's doing four . He wants
37:52
five or six in the next Olympics . That's
37:55
what we had to talk about was Taylor Nivena
37:57
is saying she's going to be in the cycling
37:59
road race as well . So
38:02
she'll be starting the
38:05
time trial , the individual
38:07
Olympic triathlon , the
38:09
mixed team relay and the cycling
38:12
road race all
38:14
in one . Olympic go , just because
38:17
, why not ? Why not ? But I
38:19
think that's along the lines of the same reason why , even
38:22
with Paula Finley winning the time trial
38:24
in Canada , they've got two
38:26
spots for the time trial and for road . So
38:29
they're going to be taking athletes more tailored
38:31
towards the road race for the Canadian team
38:33
. So unfortunately that means Paula will not be
38:35
doing the time trial at the Olympics
38:37
, but it sounds like they're going for the time
38:39
trial with Taylor in the US and
38:42
then also having her maybe be as a domestique
38:44
or be involved in the road race . And again , it'll
38:47
be interesting to see , see how her bike
38:49
handling skills are in a massive peloton
38:52
like that and if she
38:54
even finishes it . Because I think
38:56
, josh , you're saying it's before the mixed team relay
38:59
. So is that the reason the
39:02
us chose the athletes they did ? So maybe
39:04
they keep her out of the mixed team relay ? I can't
39:06
. It's hard to imagine they're gonna let her do the road , the individual , the road race out of
39:08
the mixed team relay . I can't . It's hard to imagine they're going to let
39:10
her do the road , the individual , the
39:12
road race and then the mixed team relay right
39:15
afterwards , like you got to be cooked at that point
39:17
.
39:19
I guess it really comes down to her decision and
39:21
her team's decision and her coach's decision
39:23
on what they want to do . But
39:26
triathlon's her sport . We just I mean , we just
39:28
had this Christian conversation , so it's
39:30
kind of interesting to see how this plays out
39:33
. Doing all four is crazy
39:35
, and we had that conversation with Tommy
39:37
on a previous podcast . We
39:40
didn't expect it . And if she does throw
39:42
it in , does that mean that's
39:44
Kirsten Kasper's way into the mixed team
39:47
relay ? So
39:49
I don't know . I mean taylor
39:51
earned the automatic bid , so usa triathlon
39:54
had no option that she was on the team , which
39:56
we wanted anyways , but
39:58
it doesn't mean she's on the mixed team relay
40:00
yeah , exactly
40:03
, that'll still be up to usa triathlon
40:05
.
40:06
Yeah , it'd be interesting because she would be an asset
40:08
to have in the mixed team relay
40:10
. She can do some attacks in there and make up some
40:13
distance . So it'd be really a shame
40:15
if she's not doing the mixed team relay . Or is it a case
40:17
of with USA Cycling ? She
40:19
has to start because they brought her out
40:22
there ? Yeah , I'm not too sure
40:24
. Well
40:26
, we'll have to wait and see how it
40:28
all rolls out at the olympics
40:30
here . It is definitely going to be
40:32
an interesting one , just even
40:34
seeing who's going to be out there . But , um
40:37
, speaking of the olympics , we did have a few
40:39
more team announcements and there
40:42
have been some upsets . We'll
40:44
say one of the ones everyone was kind
40:46
of waiting for and we kind of alluded to some
40:49
of the issues was , uh , team
40:51
gb . We finally
40:53
got the list
40:56
of names and for the first time in four
40:59
olympics , there's no
41:01
brownlee on the start list this year . So
41:04
, team gb , they've got on the women's side Beth
41:06
Potter , georgia Taylor Brown
41:08
and Kate Woff . With
41:11
Kate Woff which that was another
41:13
bit of drama there too
41:15
, I think it was that Sophie Caldwell was
41:18
trying to get the spot in there- and
41:20
they decided to go for Kate
41:22
Woff , and there was some yeah
41:25
, they had to go to arbitration . Figure uh it
41:29
who they were going to pick the olympic team , and they ended
41:31
up sticking with kate wall . And then , on the
41:33
men's side , we have alexi , which is a
41:35
surprise to no one , and sam
41:37
dickinson instead of johnny brownlee
41:40
. What do you guys think about ? Uh , no
41:43
brownlees for the first time in so
41:45
long .
41:48
I think it was time . I mean , I think
41:50
we were all kind of expecting this would be
41:52
the year that it might not happen
41:54
and this is this
41:56
was going to be the end of the regime . Um
41:59
, now brother Brownlee still out there trying
42:01
to crush T 100 and he's trying to figure
42:03
out how to put one of those races fully
42:05
together . So they're not done
42:07
in triathlon , um , but
42:09
for the Olympic cycle it looks like that
42:11
is the end of it , unless
42:14
they need an alternate or
42:16
whatnot . But I'm not
42:18
surprised . I really wasn't surprised
42:20
. It didn't sound like he was too surprised either , and
42:23
at the end of the day they went with what
42:26
they thought was the best . It sounds like on the female side it
42:28
was a little tougher of a decision .
42:30
Although you know what ? I'm kind of surprised because you went
42:32
like alex , he doesn't really
42:34
need a domestique in there
42:36
. He's been able to hold on to these bikes and if you're gonna
42:38
have anyone who's gonna pull out
42:40
a surprise performance on one of the big days
42:43
, it's not gonna be sam
42:45
dickinson . It's kind of those things
42:47
where you have that olympic experience and kind
42:49
of have been there , there was the chance
42:51
of something cool happening
42:53
, and especially so strong in the mixed relay , I
42:56
was kind of surprised .
42:57
Yeah , we definitely have a
42:59
vibe on the podcast too , where you guys love the
43:02
veterans and the people with the nuclear
43:05
. It's like always pushing for the upset
43:08
.
43:10
I like how Josh says you guys so
43:12
all
43:15
right calling us the
43:17
veterans .
43:18
Um , yeah
43:24
, it's funny . Yeah , you always
43:26
seem to remember the people who are like when
43:28
you got into the sport and , honestly
43:31
, that was a problem for a long time with the uh , the Ironman
43:33
broadcast was it was uh , they
43:36
talked about all the people they knew from the days that they were
43:38
racing , pro with kind of thing , and we can
43:40
definitely be guilty of that as well , because those are
43:42
the people that , when you're in the thick of it and so
43:44
excited about training , you definitely
43:46
tend to root for , even though they're getting older
43:49
just as much as you are .
43:50
Yeah , I
43:52
definitely had a little bit of that imposter syndrome
43:54
when I was talking to tim don this week too . I
43:56
mean , that was just like speaking of the old guard
43:58
. It was like , and he was reminiscing about
44:01
his awful boston marathon experience
44:03
and it was , uh
44:05
, it was . It was a really neat conversation , but
44:07
again , like seeing some of the people that they're
44:09
talking about , and him specifically
44:12
, it's like it's just really cool to be around
44:14
that type of experience level in
44:16
this sport . Um the knowledge that
44:18
he has is is crazy . He
44:20
definitely got asked a lot about the short shoot , so
44:22
oh yeah , I can
44:24
imagine .
44:25
So , um
44:27
, did we talk about team usa ? I
44:29
can never remember . We spend so much time
44:31
chatting outside of this . I can't remember what we talked about on
44:33
the podcast and what we don't . I
44:36
think we did , didn't we ?
44:37
We did touch on it , yeah .
44:40
Let's see what else came out here . There's a ton of controversy
44:42
around . I think it was Team
44:44
Italy Seems
44:47
to be . There were some people resigning
44:49
from the Italian Federation and some drama
44:51
going around over a bunch of politics
44:54
for who was chosen for the team , even though
44:56
there were much higher ranked athletes
44:58
in the standings . So sounds
45:00
like there's some drama there as well
45:02
. Team Canada got
45:05
to give it a shout out there , but the
45:07
first time we are not going to have a mixed team
45:09
, really because we don't have enough female
45:11
athletes , which is very
45:14
disappointing to see . We
45:16
haven't had the best last few years here when it came
45:18
to racing after being on you
45:20
know , a hopeful high for a while , with tyler
45:23
mislichuk having some good results in
45:25
the race
45:27
ahead of the previous olymp . But
45:30
what else do we have going ?
45:31
on here .
45:32
Team Australia was also announced . I
45:36
don't think there is any drama there
45:38
. Did you guys hear of any ?
45:40
No , no , no drama there .
45:43
Team South Africa , we've got Vicky Vandermeer
45:45
and , on the men's side , henry Skuman
45:48
, jamie Riddle Nothing
45:50
too crazy there . And then Team New Zealand
45:52
I think is the last one that has been announced . On
45:54
the women's side , we have Ainsley Thorpe and Nicole
45:57
Vanderkay and on the men's side
45:59
, hayden Wilde and Dylan Mugello . So
46:01
, of course , no surprise with
46:03
Hayden Wilde being up there
46:05
. It'll be really interesting
46:07
to see how this goes down . Are we going to have another
46:10
Hayden and Alex
46:12
showdown for the medals ? Will
46:15
we have another Blumenfeld up there ?
46:17
Yeah , man , who
46:19
knows what they're going to lock in for this race ? We've
46:22
talked about it . I've listened
46:25
to his most recent episode too , where
46:27
things went wrong in
46:29
Yokohama . He didn't
46:31
have the race he won and then kaglari had the mechanicals
46:34
um , so I think he was in a better
46:36
spot already for kaglari , and now they
46:39
are so race olympic
46:41
specific now that who knows
46:43
what ? What christian's gonna show up , I mean
46:45
, I think I think we all expect the
46:47
best one and in that distance
46:49
specific ready to go . But Alex
46:52
and Hayden certainly are out there
46:55
. Christian talks a lot about . Don't
46:57
forget about Morgan too . I mean the
46:59
year he's been having .
47:02
He's been on fire for sure . And
47:04
have you guys heard about the latest controversy
47:06
with the Olympics that they're not
47:08
going to be providing air conditioners ? So
47:12
several countries are
47:14
bringing their own air conditioners
47:16
to the olympic village
47:18
. Oh
47:22
, it's a whole thing now . Yeah , apparently they're
47:24
just they're not going to include it . But like
47:26
europe hot . If it's like hot , hot
47:28
is it's different than the US . It's like everyone
47:30
has air conditioning in the US , so at least you get a reprieve
47:32
from it . If you get a heat
47:35
wave going through
47:37
France and there's no air conditioning and they're not
47:39
built to stay cool . That's
47:41
going to be unpleasant .
47:43
Sounds like a potential advertisement for
47:46
, like an ice bathtub or something like
47:48
that .
47:48
There we go yeah . Sponsor
47:51
the entire athlete's village yeah
47:54
, portable air conditioning coming
47:56
soon there we go get
47:59
it done , but you know it speaks to another thing
48:01
, though . Like that definitely put some of
48:03
the less well-funded countries
48:05
at a disadvantage . If you have the uh , the
48:08
big first world countries coming in
48:10
, they've all got their air conditioning , everything dialed in
48:12
, and then you know , some countries may not
48:14
be able to afford providing that for their
48:16
athletes . So yeah , it just
48:18
it seems like an odd choice
48:21
. I know France is feeling like they've spent a lot of
48:23
money on this , which is fair , but air
48:25
conditioning , that
48:27
seems like it should be a given .
48:30
Yeah , especially in the middle of
48:32
summer .
48:34
Yeah .
48:34
It gets warmer , kind of like tea time .
48:38
Well , we have had
48:40
some fun kind of talking about the Olympics
48:43
and we're definitely looking forward to see how those
48:45
races shake out . But , josh
48:47
, you had some fun going into an even
48:49
shorter distance with
48:52
Super Tri and some announcements going on there
48:54
. Do you want to tell us about it ?
48:57
Yeah , so Supertri officially
49:00
had their kickoff
49:02
for the upcoming season , which starts
49:04
here in Boston on August 18th
49:06
and then goes from here to Chicago
49:08
so it was Wednesday
49:10
night then
49:13
goes from here to Chicago , so I think it was Wednesday night . They had a kickoff party
49:15
in Boston , um , and we had the event organizer , which is called
49:17
Boston triathlon . It's a longstanding
49:19
sprint and Olympic distance
49:21
race here in just South
49:24
of Boston and you get to race off an awesome
49:26
Bay and then bike
49:28
through the city and some of the suburbs and
49:30
then an awesome little coastal run
49:32
and that event's been going on for years . He
49:35
was able to connect with the Supertribe
49:37
ownership and now
49:39
, with the new team partnership franchise
49:42
set up , which
49:45
I believe that fourth team is about to be announced
49:47
any day now and
49:49
they did announce that that that would
49:51
be coming , so it would have all four teams . But tim
49:54
don was there representing uh podium
49:56
racing team and was . They had
49:58
a nice q a panel with with the members
50:00
um , and he
50:03
was just really excited
50:05
about the opportunity to come to
50:07
these bigger cities like boston . The
50:09
, the , the athletes who are under
50:11
contract and all of these athletes are already
50:13
under contract they know who these teams are are
50:16
consists of Um . I did get
50:18
some information that was four
50:20
of the five U S athletes are under
50:22
contract for super league . Um
50:25
, what four ? We don't know yet and I believe
50:27
it's like over 85 , 90%
50:29
of the contracted athletes
50:32
are going to be coming from Paris to
50:34
Boston to do that first race . So you
50:36
want to talk about being in shape and being ready to go there
50:38
. They're going to be ready to go and
50:43
it's really cool because it's a sprint and Olympic already
50:45
existing and this is one of the things I think they're going to do
50:47
throughout the local
50:49
races is the sprint's going
50:51
to go , the Olympic's going to go and
50:54
use their normal courses and then they have
50:56
a little bit separate transition area
50:58
set up and the whole super try
51:00
look and feel is in a different
51:02
area . So that race will start
51:05
after the sprint in the Olympic . So
51:08
all of the age group athletes will actually
51:10
get to come out , participate
51:12
, have some post-race refreshments
51:14
and and watch and be at
51:16
uh , the super try event . And they've partnered
51:19
with some of the
51:21
local tourist boards and companies that are going to help promote it
51:23
. So
51:34
those campaigns are going to start to kick off and
51:37
some bibs will go to some local triathletes
51:40
. I'm going to be getting a bib to the
51:42
Olympic , which will be really cool . It'll
51:44
be my first Olympic distance on August 18th
51:46
and yeah , it's just , it was a really
51:49
well run event . They had some great food . It was
51:51
hosted at one of these new , uh
51:54
f1 arcade facilities
51:56
, so I don't know if you guys have ever seen that . So , jenny , it's
51:58
literally a facility of like maybe
52:01
a thousand f1 simulators that . So
52:03
the whole place is packed with just people from
52:05
boston being there as an activity
52:08
to do on a wednesday night . And then we had
52:10
a little private room in the back that maybe had like
52:12
10 simulators and a bar
52:14
and stuff for private events . So really
52:16
cool facility . I guess they're popping up all over the place . This one
52:18
just opened a couple of weeks ago .
52:20
That is my kind of bar to go to .
52:22
That'd be so much fun .
52:25
Oh , that sounds wicked . Yeah , it'll be fun to see the
52:28
next team announced in there and get
52:30
them rolling Really . Yeah
52:32
, Super League seems to change things up every
52:34
year , and this thing's no different . Did
52:37
they happen to mention if they'll continue to have
52:39
the short shoot ?
52:40
So it is going to be the Enduro style . So
52:43
swim , bike run , swim , bike run , swim , bike run
52:45
. We will have the cutoffs
52:48
, and then obviously there's no cutoff if somebody that
52:50
far ahead of somebody else that
52:53
rule has been put in place . But
52:55
they will have the short shoot and
52:57
it doesn't necessarily go to
53:00
the swimmer that gets it , or or
53:02
so we know there was some controversy
53:04
around Hayden wild last year and and
53:07
and Tim was certainly asked those questions
53:09
and it just comes down to strategy and on
53:11
the fly-fly decision-making . But
53:14
the sports media didn't play .
53:16
Yeah , no , he's awesome . He just
53:18
loves the sport , so into it
53:20
, has so much experience with it . He's always
53:23
been a fun person to chat to and definitely knows
53:26
his stuff . So be curious to see
53:28
how this next Super League season goes down . It'll
53:30
be fun to watch and see how the
53:32
changes actually mix up the racing . I don't know if
53:34
it's going to have too much effect on the
53:36
actual races , just more so how the teams
53:38
are structured and the athletes in
53:40
there . But you know what ? They do
53:42
such a good job at getting this
53:44
fast , furious , short racing that people who
53:47
aren't into triathlon are more
53:49
likely to watch , let's be honest , than
53:51
three hours of a T100
53:53
or eight hours of Ironman . Hopefully
53:56
they have all the technical stuff worked out too so
53:58
you can see a lot more splits and information on screen
54:01
and really make it something fun to watch
54:03
.
54:04
I mean there's the whole individual race , there's the team
54:06
race , as we all know . There's the season-long
54:08
individual bonuses , there's the
54:10
swim bonus , there's the swim bonus , there's the run bonus
54:12
, so there's a whole bunch of different incentives
54:15
for the athletes and for the fans
54:17
to keep track of . It's definitely fan-friendly
54:20
because it is quick and
54:22
fun and exciting . So they're
54:24
hoping that this new format
54:27
and franchise kind of holds
54:29
and it becomes more of that F1
54:31
type of mentality and and
54:33
takes off . So we'll see how it goes
54:36
. I think they're all excited about it . Um
54:38
, if you're in the boston area , want to be part
54:40
of one of these ? I know the boston triathlon still has
54:42
registration spots open , so same
54:44
with chicago . It's an opportunity to get
54:46
your own racing done and and then be
54:48
there for these literally olympic
54:51
athletes coming right out of the olympics and in
54:53
top-notch form , running as individuals
54:56
and teammates .
54:57
so excited about that yeah
54:59
, I've been to a bunch of the super bowl , previously
55:01
super league events and if you can go to
55:03
one to spectate they make it a whole party , a
55:06
whole event . It's some really cool
55:08
energy and because they do such short
55:10
races with laps all around and stuff , you're seeing the
55:12
athletes constantly and you're seeing what's going down
55:14
. They're good with having big screens and announcer
55:17
on site so you know what's happening even if you're
55:19
not watching the feed . So check it
55:21
out if you can . Those are always a blast
55:23
to go see . Well
55:25
, I think the last thing we have going on here
55:28
is another Ironman Pro Series 70.3
55:30
going on this weekend , and we debated
55:33
how to pronounce this prior to
55:35
the podcast and I still have no idea . So
55:37
it is Ironman
55:39
70.3 Les Sables d'Alon
55:42
, vendee , maybe
55:44
. Oui , oui , oui oui
55:47
, oui , oui , yeah
55:50
, canadian , but definitely do
55:52
not speak French , so that
55:54
is my best guess at it . But we will start
55:56
with the women's side . Uh , some
55:58
of the top names we got in there emily moria
56:01
, marjolaine pierre , katie curran
56:03
, mayesta h nielsen , chelene
56:05
bell , katie coley , pamela
56:07
olivera , danielle blamel , bolle , pamela Oliveira , danielle
56:11
Blamel , nick Bartlett , a
56:14
few other names along there , and
56:16
then on the men's
56:18
side . Well , actually let's go into the women's first . Not
56:21
the most packed start list , we'll
56:24
say . We're definitely getting into the thick
56:26
of Ironman racing and a lot of the Ironman
56:28
pro series . Athletes are obviously
56:31
prioritizing those three ironmans
56:33
that they can have included . So it seems like
56:35
some of these 70.3s are a little softer
56:37
in between . But let's start
56:39
with you , betty . Who do you think is gonna take
56:41
the race this weekend ?
56:44
um , I am gonna take a
56:46
local french with , uh , marjorie
56:49
pierre . I think . She has her own legs
56:51
to back and she knows the course like the back of
56:53
her hand , so I think it's an easy pick . So
56:56
, yeah , choosing her .
56:58
Sounds good . How about you , Josh ? What have you got this
57:00
weekend ?
57:03
Jenny , you can go next . Okay
57:05
, you need to go first one of these days too . You
57:07
haven't gone first in a while .
57:08
Oh true , maybe I'll save it for the races where
57:10
I've got it here . I know
57:15
we definitely we should do the uh , the daily try
57:17
, uh picks in there too and post
57:19
those up . Those are a lot of fun . Um
57:22
, you know what I'm gonna go ? Pamela olivera
57:24
, I think she's gonna go turn it up . Have a
57:26
great result over there this weekend
57:28
. How about you , josh
57:30
?
57:30
I'll go with f1 , emily I , I
57:32
, I believe what fed a . I was actually
57:35
going to go marjolaine as well too , because
57:37
I think that whole french aspect
57:39
home territory and understanding
57:41
that the lay of the land is going to be a big factor
57:43
here with not as deep of a field
57:45
. So I'll go with emily more sounds
57:49
good .
57:51
On the men's side we have
57:53
Rico Bogan , Gustav Bieden , Clement
57:55
Mignon , Arnaud Guillaume
57:57
, Nicholas Knet , Nicholas Mann
57:59
, Mattia Cicerelli
58:01
let's see
58:04
, oh , Michael Raylert , Cam
58:06
Wurf , Rasmus Svensson
58:09
, George Goodwin
58:11
, Vincent
58:13
Amell yeah , Rasmus Svensson . George Goodwin , Vincent Kamel yeah , a
58:15
few decent names on here , so
58:18
we'll start again with you . Fede , who do you think is going
58:20
to take it this weekend ?
58:23
well , I know you guys
58:25
know who I'm going to pick . Yeah
58:29
, I cannot choose other
58:31
than Gustav for this race , so
58:33
thank you for picking me first .
58:36
Um , yeah , gustav he's
58:38
gonna take it . I don't know . His run
58:40
doesn't seem like it's quite back where I was
58:43
. I was looking at that , but I don't know if his run is quite
58:45
back where he needs it to be , to be up
58:47
in that I listen to some of the some of the Norwegian
58:49
Method podcast .
58:50
He's not running fully yet .
58:52
Yeah , no , fair enough , I'm
58:54
gonna go . Clement
58:58
Mignon , I think he's gonna pull it out here . Same
59:01
deal . Josh was saying there French
59:03
, got the atmosphere , got the crowds cheering for you
59:05
, ready to get it out there . How about you
59:07
, josh ?
59:08
I'm gonna go with our buddy who was not
59:10
able to be a part of the photo
59:12
. Finish at T100 San Francisco Enrico
59:15
Bogan , coming wire to
59:17
wire on this one .
59:19
That's a good shout . That
59:21
would not be a surprise , awesome
59:24
. Well , we'll look forward to watching that , hopefully with a few
59:26
less issues and getting to see
59:28
the broadcast , but it should
59:30
be some more fun racing this weekend
59:32
. Anything else you guys wanted to chat
59:34
about before we close it out today ?
59:36
I forgot . I did get some good news today . Um
59:39
, what's that unexpected ? I totally
59:41
forgot . I even registered . But new york city
59:44
has all these marathons have major
59:46
uh ways of getting
59:49
in and they've been asking for
59:51
people to like do a sweepstakes or whatever . And then they
59:53
threw one out there last week or two
59:55
weeks ago about a virtual registration
59:57
for New York and you
59:59
could do . You have to do a virtual marathon
1:00:02
this year
1:00:04
within the week of the New York city marathon , so
1:00:06
October 28th to November 3rd
1:00:08
you have to do a virtual . Well , it
1:00:10
was a lottery again and I have friends
1:00:12
who didn't get it . And then , all of a sudden , I saw the email come through
1:00:14
that I got in . So
1:00:18
with that comes a guaranteed entry
1:00:20
to next year's New York City Marathon
1:00:23
. Congratulations , that's
1:00:25
wicked . I'll be running New York in 2025
1:00:27
.
1:00:28
That'll be a very very cool experience
1:00:30
.
1:00:31
So Chicago , new York checked and if
1:00:33
Chicago goes well , boston will be 2026
1:00:36
.
1:00:36
There we go . I tried to find a
1:00:39
charity one for Chicago . Couldn't find anything that
1:00:41
had any spots left in there , so if anyone hears of anyone
1:00:44
who can get into Chicago there , let
1:00:46
me know .
1:00:47
We actually had another friend that was with us at Peloton
1:00:49
this weekend from Boston she's
1:00:51
looking for one too . So Janine and I said we
1:00:53
would be doing some research and seeing if we
1:00:55
can reach out to our foundation to see if
1:00:57
they know of anyone .
1:00:59
I'll let you know . Let me know if you find any
1:01:01
, because that'd be a lot of fun . I know there's one to the Phoenix
1:01:03
Foundation , but that is very
1:01:05
, very pricey .
1:01:08
Ours is under $2,000 . That's Chicago's
1:01:10
in New York . That is magical .
1:01:12
Yeah , awesome
1:01:15
. Well , congratulations , that's exciting . That'll
1:01:17
be a very cool experience to go run the New York
1:01:19
City Marathon Definitely something
1:01:21
on the bucket list to attempt one of these days
1:01:23
in Boston . Yeah , one
1:01:26
of these days going to try Boston . I
1:01:38
mean , these are all stepping stones to get to boston for me , but I'll take them along the way . There
1:01:40
we go wicked well as always . Thanks for joining me , guys , and we are gonna follow along with all the racing
1:01:42
this weekend and be back next week to chat all about it .
1:01:44
But have a great night have a good one
1:01:46
, ever have a good one , guys .
