It's wintertime . We need to change our hair
0:02
right . Welcome
0:05
to Beauty Beyond 50 , where we explore
0:08
beauty , style and confidence for
0:10
fabulous women beyond 50 . I'm
0:12
your host , denise Kylitz , and
0:14
if you've ever walked by a mirror and wondered
0:17
who that reflection belongs to , well
0:19
, you were in the right place . As
0:22
women over 50 , our insides still
0:24
feel like we're in our 20s , but our outside
0:26
tells a different story . I'm in my late 50s
0:28
and things are changing . My memory
0:30
is not as sharp , my tummy is not as flat
0:33
, and don't get me started about those
0:35
hairs that seem to grow overnight In
0:37
my three decades in the beauty industry
0:39
, the best moments are when someone like you
0:41
comes in seeking advice on looking
0:43
and feeling more confident . So I asked
0:45
myself why stop doing what I love ? That's
0:48
why I'm here , sharing my 30 years of knowledge . Let's
0:51
form a community where we can talk about
0:53
midlife nuances , from hair care
0:55
to lifestyle choices . Stay tuned
0:57
for enlightening conversations , expert
1:00
interviews and lots of laughter . Remember
1:03
to subscribe , rate and share
1:05
your feedback . Here's to embracing beauty
1:07
beyond 50 . Let's do this together
1:09
, alright
1:12
. So now I know it's probably
1:15
snowy , icy where you're
1:17
at . I know it's really cold where
1:19
I'm at . So what are we
1:21
supposed to do . Let's play with our hair , shall
1:23
we ? So I want to talk to you about
1:26
what are some of the popular
1:30
hair colors in the
1:32
wintertime for women over 50 . Alright
1:34
, let's start with silver
1:37
hair with low lights . Yeah
1:39
, what is that ? It is when you
1:41
take your gray beautiful hair
1:43
and you ask your stylist
1:46
to put low lights throughout . This
1:48
will deepen the contrast in
1:50
your hair and it will
1:52
give you a sense of depth
1:55
, if you will , and plus
1:57
, it adds a lot of shine . So
2:00
how do they actually weave
2:02
the darker gray into your hair
2:04
? They could either use highlights
2:07
with foils or they
2:09
can actually paint it on there as well
2:11
with a technique called Bolliage
2:13
. That's really
2:15
used a lot lately
2:17
in the salons . A lot of younger stylists
2:19
prefer to use that method . Alright
2:22
, what's another color that you might be thinking
2:24
? Maybe you've got brown hair , chocolate
2:26
with Caramel Bolliage . I
2:29
tell you , that is beautiful . You
2:31
take a deep chocolate color
2:34
, kind of think like
2:36
a Hershey's chocolate bar . That
2:39
could be the color of your roots , and
2:42
then you have your stylist paint
2:44
on caramel highlights or
2:46
Caramel Bolliage on the ends
2:48
. It is a beautiful combination
2:50
. It's going to give you that depth . It's going to give you that
2:53
shine it's going to give you that
2:55
spice , if you will , that you need when
2:57
you're feeling kind of gloomy on the inside
2:59
. Alright , what about you redheads
3:01
? Yeah , I'm talking to you . Auburn
3:04
hair with Caramel highlights
3:07
. Okay , hear me out on this
3:09
. You take your Auburn
3:11
hair and you Bolliage
3:13
just a few highlights , especially around
3:16
the face , the face framing . All
3:18
it does is it gives that dimension
3:20
that you're looking for , that spark
3:22
that you're looking for . You know
3:25
, we're inside , we're reading our books
3:27
, we're cooking , we're trying
3:30
to stay motivated . We need that
3:32
extra sparkle , do we not ? I
3:35
think so . Now let's talk to
3:37
you women that have that
3:39
chestnut brown hair , but
3:41
you don't want it too dark . How about me
3:43
? How about me Don't want to be blonde
3:45
, I just need some dimensional
3:48
blonde highlights . So what
3:50
you do is you take your base of your brown
3:52
and it could be a chestnut brown
3:54
, it can be a
3:56
medium brown and you just play
3:59
strategic highlights throughout
4:01
. And those are blonde
4:04
highlights , not Caramel Blonde highlights
4:06
. They could be very , very fine highlights
4:08
. They could be chunky highlights , because that's
4:10
really making a big comeback . But ugh
4:13
, try not
4:15
to make them too chunky . It's very
4:17
aging . We want to stay youthful , don't
4:20
we ? So I would say , just soften
4:22
it up around your face , some face
4:24
framing and you should
4:26
be good to go . Let's talk
4:28
about how to take care
4:30
of your color-treated hair . The winter
4:33
time poses its own problems . The air
4:35
is drier in the house , our
4:37
skin's drier and guess what ? Our hair is
4:39
drier too . So you want to make
4:41
sure that you're using color protection
4:44
for your hair . That means you
4:46
want to make sure you're using shampoo that
4:49
doesn't contain any sulfates in it . You don't
4:51
want any kind of stripping product in
4:54
your shampoo and you want to make sure
4:56
that your shampoo and your
4:58
conditioner says safe for color-treated
5:01
hair . Okay , some of the
5:03
dandruff shampoos that are out there I
5:05
know we're all combating dry
5:07
scalp , so we're using our dandruff shampoos . Most
5:10
of those are not safe for color-treated hair , so
5:12
just be careful with that , okay
5:14
. Another thing you wanted to is
5:17
limit your how often you're
5:19
washing your hair . Really
5:21
, really try to go two to three days . Okay
5:24
, you're just going to extend your color
5:26
longer , because
5:29
every time that you shampoo your hair
5:31
, especially with warm water
5:33
, you're opening that cuticle up
5:36
. You're losing those color molecules
5:38
that were deposited in there , so your
5:40
hair's going to turn brassy . You're going to need a toner
5:42
a lot more frequent
5:44
, probably in like two or three weeks . So
5:47
my advice would be to use lukewarm
5:49
water and , if you can , cool water
5:52
most of us can't do that
5:54
, I can't do that , so ugh . Another
5:57
thing that I would do is weekly
5:59
mask treatments deep conditioning for
6:01
your hair . Again , your skin
6:04
is drier in the wintertime . You've
6:06
got the heaters going . Your hair is going
6:08
to be drier . You really need those weekly
6:10
masks to help support that moisture
6:13
retention for your hair . And , along
6:15
with avoiding the hot water when you're shampooing
6:18
your hair , you want to avoid hot water
6:20
period and hot styling tools
6:22
. So if you can let your hair air
6:24
dry , that's even better . But
6:26
if you are using hot styling tools , please
6:29
, please , please , use
6:31
heat protection . I don't care what brand
6:33
. Every brand has heat protection
6:35
out there . It's a spray that you spray on
6:38
dry hair before you put that curling iron
6:40
in or that flat iron on there , okay
6:42
. Also , you
6:44
might not have thought about this , but make
6:46
sure you're still using your UV
6:49
protection on your hair in
6:51
the wintertime . If you're getting out there for
6:53
a walk hopefully you are , because
6:55
exercise is king If
6:58
you're getting out there for your daily walks , make sure you're
7:00
spraying UV protection on
7:02
your hair as well if you want your color
7:04
to last . You'll thank me . Also
7:07
, it is so important
7:09
to get your regular maintenance
7:12
done for your hair color . Okay
7:14
, get those touch-ups done . I know
7:16
the older we get , those
7:19
grays just seem to be persistent
7:22
and they just keep popping up . When
7:25
we used to go six weeks for our touch-ups
7:28
, now it's maybe four , sometimes
7:30
three weeks in between touch-ups . I
7:32
hear you , I'm one of those too . So
7:35
just make sure that you're getting
7:37
your touch-ups . That way , too , your stylist
7:39
can adjust your toner
7:42
on the end , so your color will always stay
7:44
fresh . Look fresh . Okay
7:46
, ask your stylist too , maybe about
7:48
a mini touch-up . We used to offer these
7:50
in this salon , where they just do
7:53
the T-zone like what we'd call
7:55
. It is a T , meaning around your
7:57
face and down your
7:59
part line . That would get you through and stretch
8:01
your money . Your stylist might
8:04
offer it . They might not . I don't know . It's
8:07
worth asking . The worst they could say is
8:09
no right , all
8:11
right , this might
8:13
not be a concern of yours , but it
8:15
might be . Avoid chlorine and
8:17
salt water . If you're a swimmer , if you're getting
8:20
to the YMCA , if you're getting to the gym and you're
8:22
swimming for exercise , that
8:24
warm water . It feels good . Just
8:27
make sure you put on a swim cap . Keep the
8:29
chlorine out of your hair . If you're
8:31
hopping into the jacuzzi ooh , I wish
8:33
I had a jacuzzi Just
8:36
keep the chlorine out of your hair . Another
8:39
really good tip to do
8:41
is put a deep
8:43
conditioner all over your hair before
8:46
you put your swim cap on . That'll actually
8:48
protect it even more . It's almost like sealing
8:50
it before you put that cap on
8:52
, and so it's almost like a sponge , right
8:55
? A wet sponge can't soak up any
8:57
more water , but a dry sponge is just
8:59
right . Also
9:02
, be really gentle when you're styling your hair
9:04
. Use wide-toothed combs in the shower with
9:06
your conditioner on already
9:08
. You just want to minimize breakage . Remember
9:10
your hair is dry . It's a stressful
9:13
time for your hair . Also
9:16
, one thing , the
9:18
last thing , it's the most important thing Make
9:21
sure you're getting drinking
9:23
your water . Make sure you're eating
9:26
a balanced diet . Everything that goes
9:28
through your body comes out
9:30
in your hair and your nails and your skin
9:32
and your smile and how you feel
9:34
. All that good stuff , right ? Well
9:36
, let me just say that wintertime
9:38
could be a fabulous time to
9:41
play with your hair , to play with the canvas
9:43
that is your hair . You can
9:45
really try things that you might
9:47
not try in the summertime , because I know a lot
9:49
of my friends . They sometimes don't
9:51
even get their hair colored in the summertime because they're outside
9:54
all the time , they're in baseball caps
9:56
, they're sweating
9:58
all the time or they're at the beach . So they
10:00
think why should I go get a toner or
10:02
get my hair colored ? Because
10:04
it's going to be whipped around by the sun ? I totally
10:07
get it , totally get it . But
10:09
so wintertime might be your time
10:11
to shine . And just remember , take
10:13
care of your hair , have fun with
10:15
your hair . I just encourage
10:18
you to take this season and
10:20
embrace it and
10:22
have fun with it . Be bold
10:24
, be beautiful . Transition your
10:26
hair into something
10:29
maybe you didn't even think was possible . Deepen
10:32
a little bit , add dimension , have
10:34
fun . I hope this
10:36
winter season treats you well . Share
10:39
this with anybody that you think might enjoy
10:41
