RATING
It's not so much the unbelievable amount of (often fascinating) detail which works here - it's the way it's all woven into an interlocking narrative with a focus on the lives of the people involved in making these records. This show sets out to be as definitive as possible on the subject, and gets as close as may be possible.
A comprehensive history lesson on the making of some of the biggest hits in rock music. Educational and entertaining.
Great and informative podcast.Recommended to all
I am sorry to hear that someone is passing all your hard work off as theirs.
Probably the best music podcast - full stop. It takes a few episodes for this podcast to gain momentum, but once you've hit the rock and roll era, episodes are consistently high quality. Not as silly or entertaining as many other podcasts but makes up for it with its comprehensive scope, encyclopedic knowledge, and focus on the hidden threads and connections between popular artists.
I was about 10 episodes in before I realized this was not a parody podcast. The voice - dull, slow, ponderous, pedantic - can be made almost listenable by speeding up to 1.25 or 1.5 times normal speed. The mispronunciations - Los Angeleeze instead of Los Angelus etc - can be put down to insularity, and it may be a Mancunian thing to pronounce singer as sing-ger with two distinct syllables and a hard g in the middle. However, Mr Hickey's hatred for the white males out there is the sign of a self-loathing snowflake who needs to preach his own virtue, without fail, every episode so far. This is supposed to be a music podcast, not a thinly veiled social-justice-warrior sermon. We can all be aware of the bad things that went before without wearing a white privileged hair-shirt and flagellating ourselves over it. It makes this podcast a boring joke to all skin colors and genders.
This is one of those podcasts that, whenever a new episode releases, it jumps to the front of my queue. Andrew Hickey covers a deep dive into rock history, and each episode is well-researched and engaging.
