Elliot. A little bit later on the
0:02
podcast will talk about all the hockey
0:04
from Thursday night and all the news
0:06
and the games from Wednesday as well.
0:09
and talk about the weekend. But the
0:11
big story the day is Bob Cole
0:13
or who we lost passed away the
0:15
age of ninety, began his career it
0:18
Cbc Radio in eighteen, Sixty Nine, Transition,
0:20
a television and nineteen Seventy Three and
0:22
wrapped up in two thousand and Nineteen.
0:24
And between those years there about a
0:27
million memories. Elliott, You and I are
0:29
basically the same vintage. We're born right
0:31
around the same time we grew up
0:33
listening to Bob Cole. All of our
0:36
early memories of hockey involve that voice.
0:38
Am I a chance on the radio
0:40
show today? It's harder to a number
0:42
of people. Harry Neil, Dick Irvin, Cassie
0:45
Campbell, Pascual Run Maclean, John Davidson Mark
0:47
Our Skin I'm sure you've talked to
0:49
a plenty of people as of one
0:51
shares their stories and memories of Bob
0:54
Cole. but I'll just open the floor
0:56
to you. And by the way, great
0:58
piece You are Sportsnet.say about Bob. Call
1:00
your thoughts on the legend or
1:02
is Mark asking cause I'm the
1:04
goat. While. He is
1:07
the go that's a the true and
1:09
the great nickname. He is the goats
1:11
very emotional day. Jeff As you can
1:13
imagine for a lot of people and
1:15
I think the great thing about Bob
1:17
Cole. Was. That it didn't
1:19
matter if you knew him like some of
1:21
us in the business did. You.
1:23
Felt like you knew him. Bob
1:26
Cole was either a friend or
1:28
coworker. Or. He was somebody
1:31
that. Was. The voice of
1:33
your lifetime. He described hockey to
1:35
you. And. Even if you didn't
1:38
know him personally, you felt you knew
1:40
him because you knew one of his
1:42
calls are you knew everything is app
1:44
adding or there was some catchphrase of
1:47
is that you loved are there was
1:49
some great hockey moment. That. He
1:51
described to you. So everyone felt
1:54
like they knew him regardless of
1:56
if they did. Or. They
1:58
didn't. Ah, I'm. Gotta
2:01
node in the morning from someone saying.
2:03
That. They were hearing things. Ah,
2:06
Asked around not too much but it
2:08
was more like I wanted to make
2:10
sure that people at our place who
2:13
needed to know new. As.
2:15
So they could be prepared for it in
2:17
case it was true. I
2:20
thought Jeff Worthy of Motion really
2:22
hit me. was. When. We
2:24
do our shows. Any. Of
2:26
the features that are done in advance, I
2:28
never want to look at them. I
2:30
want to react to them live.
2:33
Now. Not everyone's life me tell he likes
2:35
to watch them in advance run the plane.
2:38
Likes. To watch The move. Vance. everybody
2:40
has different rules but for this one,
2:42
I wish I had watched it in
2:44
advance because when we came on air
2:47
at seven o'clock for Lightning Panthers, I
2:49
saw that thing for the first time.
2:52
And. At the end it came up.
2:54
Bob Cole Nineteen Thirty Three To Two
2:56
Thousand and Twenty Four I almost lost
2:59
it. It was A. I wasn't. Prepared.
3:02
For it and just and or of
3:04
seeing it and you're in My family
3:06
Jeff We've been through a lot with
3:08
death. And I was
3:10
introduced to it out of very
3:12
young age so my skin got
3:15
sicker. At a very young age.
3:17
Via professionally.
3:19
Fortunately, He.
3:22
Oh, we haven't had to deal with that
3:24
a lot with the people that we've worked
3:26
with. so this was very new. And.
3:29
Adjust site there were some text teens. That
3:32
went around. On. Thursday.
3:35
Just. Heard people talking about how hard
3:38
it had some one because like a
3:40
lot of people, we love Bob. But
3:42
also you think about your work
3:44
group. And. Now could
3:46
be affected. I think you
3:49
was. I think it was a very emotional day.
3:51
There were some. Tax. Reminiscing like
3:53
to thing for me about Bob
3:55
is. The. Times with him because
3:58
the time. Of. my life
4:00
it was, those were some of the greatest days of
4:02
my life. I arrived to hockey in Canada,
4:04
I was 33 years old.
4:06
You know, it's
4:10
such a, as you know, it's such an honor
4:12
to work here, to help
4:14
broadcast hockey to
4:17
fans. It's
4:19
the biggest stage in the sport
4:23
and Bob was a big part of that because
4:26
we worked on the same broadcast teams quite
4:28
a bit together and like
4:30
I said I think for a lot of
4:32
people who were part of
4:34
this group it was, it was
4:39
very emotional, very emotional and I
4:41
would also say Jeff there were
4:43
people who kept closer with
4:46
Bob than I did and for
4:48
them it was especially difficult.
4:51
You know, I share your your feeling
4:53
about experiencing death quite young in your
4:55
family. I went through the same thing
4:57
when my mother passed, when
4:59
I was quite young and just some hockey
5:03
hung in there with me at the
5:05
darkest time of my life and Bob
5:07
Cole was that voice and I was
5:09
glad that on the panel on Thursday
5:12
Kelly talked about his experiences
5:14
as a player and brought
5:16
up the Easter epic and it's one of
5:18
those where were you when. I can
5:20
still remember exactly where I was, my
5:23
friend's house party and baby point in
5:25
the west end of Toronto, everyone was
5:27
downstairs partying and I was up in
5:29
the top floor watching that game listening
5:31
to the great call and Kelly
5:33
was recounting it on Thursday with you guys on
5:35
the panel and one of
5:37
the things that really struck me
5:39
was how lucky
5:42
a lot of these hockey players
5:45
have been. You know, as I
5:47
mentioned Bob started at Hockey Night in 1973, before that
5:49
he was at CBC Radio,
5:52
had a great call of 72 by
5:55
the way the Henderson goal with
5:57
respect to Foster Hewitt and Bob's
5:59
call. was better
6:01
than Foster Hewitt's. But
6:04
I thought about all the players and all those
6:06
great moments. And one of the things that we
6:08
tend to overlook or not think about is in
6:11
these great moments that these players have,
6:15
they had someone who was
6:17
just as great making that
6:19
moment. You can have the
6:21
greatest play in the world and you just
6:23
hope as a player that whoever's
6:26
calling it makes it even
6:28
bigger than it is. And
6:30
I think all of us thought back to some
6:32
of the great plays and the great calls and
6:35
on Thursday on the show you mentioned the
6:37
76th game between the Red Army and the
6:40
Philadelphia Flyers. Yes. That was
6:42
a great booth with Bob Cole and
6:44
Dick Erv and Danny Potts. That's basically
6:46
my first memory watching hockey. Yeah, you
6:48
mentioned that. I thought that was so
6:50
beautiful the way you talked about that.
6:52
And I thought about, you know, in
6:55
what we presented on Thursday there was, you know,
6:57
smiling Joe Sakhic and how many great, and we
6:59
think of 2002, how
7:01
many great Joe Sakhic moments Bob
7:04
Cole called. And I go back
7:06
to the Mario
7:09
Lemieux goal on the Minnesota Nurse Stars
7:11
where he dances, Sean Chambers and Neil
7:13
Wilkinson. And he's just consumed with
7:15
emotion and a perfect call comes
7:18
out of it. Like that made
7:20
that moment for Mario Lemieux and
7:22
hockey even bigger because the
7:24
call was so brilliant. But I'll tell you, Elliot,
7:27
there's one that I came back to
7:29
today and I've watched, I can't remember,
7:31
more than a dozen times because
7:34
the call is so perfect and it's one
7:36
of the most emotional moments that
7:38
we've seen in this past generation of hockey. It's 2014.
7:40
It is the New York Rangers
7:45
and the Pittsburgh Penguins. It's on
7:47
Mother's Day. It's Marty St.
7:49
Louis after his mother had passed away. And
7:52
he scores that goal and
7:54
Bob Cole is, you know, overcome with
7:56
emotion. And then
7:59
he says... you've come through
8:01
big time and Elliott
8:04
is so perfect
8:07
wrapping in hockey
8:09
and family and tragedy
8:13
and grace and understanding
8:16
and pride and
8:18
it all comes in like six
8:21
words from the
8:23
obstacle he was so economical
8:25
and so perfect and I
8:28
think that Sometimes because I've
8:30
worked booth a few times and it's very
8:32
very hard And I
8:34
have a lot of respect for everybody that does it
8:37
the thing that I loved about Bob
8:39
was that he spoke to the emotion of
8:41
the game at the time and Didn't
8:44
get bogged down in Names
8:47
and numbers and trying to cram everything
8:49
in the game Breathe
8:51
the game was allowed to have a
8:54
breath when Bob called the Iran McLean
8:57
Always talked about how Bob didn't call the
8:59
game. He sang the game I mean Bob
9:01
was a symphony Bob was melodies rising and
9:04
melodies falling and rising again And like
9:06
that was that was Bob Cole and I
9:08
keep coming back to the players at
9:11
how lucky all these players were from
9:13
1973 to 2019
9:16
that for all their great moments They
9:19
had someone who made their moments even
9:21
greater They all
9:23
true Jeff great stuff Nobody
9:25
read the crowd and rode the
9:27
emotion of the crowd better and
9:30
I would also say God
9:32
help you if you did one of two things Number
9:36
one gave him the wrong pronunciation of
9:38
a player's name You
9:40
were doomed and if the players said I
9:42
didn't care Bob would say how do your
9:45
parents say it and? Or
9:48
if you talked during play That
9:51
was a whistle to whistle
9:53
that was Bob's time You
9:56
could do whatever you wanted outside
9:59
of that But whistle to
10:01
whistle was Bob's time. And I never
10:03
worked as an analyst sitting next to
10:05
Bob, but those that did, they
10:08
knew that if they
10:10
started talking during play, they
10:12
were getting the Heisman. He would
10:14
put his hand up in their face and
10:17
say, not now. Didn't
10:20
say it, but you knew what he meant.
10:22
Just, you know, it's just,
10:25
you know, I really like to think
10:27
of these days I
10:30
remember when when Joe Louis, the famous
10:32
boxer died, I
10:36
believe whoever was doing the eulogy
10:38
asked the audience to clap because
10:41
he wanted everyone
10:44
to think about Joe Louis positively.
10:46
I've always remembered that story. And
10:50
so today when I
10:52
think of Bob Cole, I
10:54
smile and I laugh. And I
10:56
think of all his great calls and all the fun
10:58
moments. But like I said earlier, I think
11:00
it was a heavy day for
11:03
a lot of his coworkers, including, as I said,
11:05
people who were closer than I was because
11:08
he was such
11:10
a massive, massive presence on
11:12
the show. And it's just a reminder that
11:15
all of us are getting older. He
11:19
made hockey better. Condonces to
11:21
the family and friends of Bob
11:23
Cole. He's
11:30
got 180 pounds of his own fall. And
11:32
he's got the softball tag. He's
11:35
got the power of the powerhouse.
11:49
Okay, welcome to 32 Thoughts, the podcast
11:51
presented by the GMC Sierra elevation, Jeff
11:53
Merrick, Elliot Friedman, Dom Shramati, along with
11:55
you. And Elliot, two teams have their
11:57
backs against the wall. leave
12:01
it all on the ice, no tomorrow
12:03
for the Tampa Bay Lightning and New
12:05
York Islanders. Florida beats the Tampa Bay
12:07
Lightning 5-3 on Matthew Kachuk's
12:09
empty net goal and
12:12
the Carolina Hurricanes have the Islanders back up
12:14
against the wall courtesy of a tremendous game
12:16
by Fredrik Anderson. We're gonna get there in
12:18
a second. They grab a 3-0
12:20
series lead and have a take
12:25
a good dent and take a good chunk out
12:27
of the Islanders net minding in the process. Meanwhile
12:29
we'll start with the Battle of Florida
12:31
and we are close to seeing a
12:33
changing of that state's guard. The four
12:36
Panthers with a 3-0 series lead.
12:40
Holy smokes Elliott, could the Tampa
12:42
Bay Lightning actually get swept here?
12:46
I never would have imagined it. There was
12:48
a note from one of our producers after
12:50
the two games were over on Thursday night.
12:52
He said the Eastern Conference playoffs could be
12:54
over by Tuesday. What
12:57
a sobering thought that
12:59
is. Sobering. I
13:02
wouldn't have believed it Jeff. I didn't I
13:04
don't think that any I never go into
13:06
the playoffs thinking there's gonna be a sweep.
13:08
Never. No matter how many points
13:10
there are between say a one
13:12
seed and eight seed or anything like that.
13:15
I never believe there's gonna be a sweep
13:17
in the playoffs and we could get three
13:19
of them in the Eastern Conference. This
13:22
series Bobrovsky has
13:25
been huge. He made another
13:27
10-bell save in
13:29
game number three on Matt
13:31
Dumba. Matt Dumba is
13:34
gonna be having nightmares of this guy
13:36
all summer. All summer. And
13:41
again it's kind of like we've talked about
13:43
a couple of these other series like Carolina
13:45
Islanders in the sense that
13:47
Florida is just a little bit better.
13:50
And you know the guys who I'm
13:52
really happy for after game number three
13:54
are Kyle Pozzo And
13:57
Stephen Lorentz. These
14:00
guys are only in the line up
14:02
because one. Ryan. Lomborg is
14:04
sick and to Sam Bennett is
14:06
hurt. And. I majored it
14:09
on the broadcast. there was a Raptors
14:11
head coach Daryl Walker. he was the
14:13
second, had goats and Raptors history and
14:15
we did not get along but he
14:17
always had one saying. And. That
14:19
is. one man's injury is another
14:21
man's opportunity. He was. He always
14:23
said that. Every time there
14:26
was an injury that would be as
14:28
light as a matter of fact was
14:30
after one voice we started just asking
14:32
him about injuries. to get him say
14:34
that line by. such as those two
14:37
guys Lawrence and a poser light singapore
14:39
of Pozo, it's pretty incredible when you
14:41
really put it to your head. He
14:44
leaves the islanders. Is. In
14:46
the Plows in two Thousand and Sixteen. Second
14:48
last playoff game that year which was against
14:50
Tampa. he has a goal. A
14:52
signs a seven year deal in Buffalo. When.
14:55
You sign that deal, There
14:57
is no way there's anything
14:59
in your mind. Jeff. That.
15:02
You're not gonna be in the playoffs
15:04
for eight years. Is. Taken all
15:07
of this is gonna be great up
15:09
and coming teens, new home. The a
15:11
up to when you sign a contract
15:13
like that. That. It's gonna be
15:15
eight years until you make the plows.
15:17
It is completely foreign to you and
15:19
he gets in and he gets an
15:21
assist and. You. Know Lorenz had a
15:23
huge game as well. your could suck scores
15:26
twice for Brodsky makes the big save but
15:28
deadline that was A That was a huge
15:30
difference maker. It's in game three and you
15:32
know when you go on the road. You're
15:35
not going to get the favorable matchups. You know
15:37
there's going to be times over there sir where
15:39
your fourth lines going be caught out there. Against
15:42
players they shouldn't be playing against and
15:44
wherever they get off and like that,
15:46
it's a bonus. It's a bonus. Arguments
15:48
that Buffalo Sabres and unites October this
15:51
on the radio show on Thursday. Tyler
15:53
Myers The only active player in the
15:55
Nhl who played in a playoff game
15:57
for the Buffalo Sabres. If you're looking
16:00
for sobering thought Elliott now my joy.
16:02
I'm stand or I'd get yeah I
16:04
know wilde raid Tyler Myers The only
16:06
active players who have played in a
16:09
playoff game with the Buffalo Sabres. I'm
16:11
okay. You. Gotta come clean with
16:13
me. Year began to I'll admit it. I'm.
16:16
Willing to bet that anybody who
16:18
watched the game probably thought it
16:21
to. When. Matthew
16:23
to chalk scored the empty net Goal was
16:25
are not a party you the said
16:27
who's comments. I'd
16:29
I did think about that and I
16:32
actually thought the end of that game
16:34
would turn into a much bigger gong
16:36
show I had. I'll is so how
16:38
did I really did you know I
16:40
I I have to see also to
16:42
that I know but Roski made a
16:44
good mayday a good save. But.
16:46
The best goaltender in the games Had
16:49
to sickly was Steven Stamkos close? I
16:51
disagree enough. I. Didn't think it was gonna an
16:53
estate in the plaza. Iger
17:04
said i'm I don't know what's gonna happen year.
17:07
I don't know a it's still
17:09
too soon, but you you watch
17:11
that play. It's still weird to
17:13
me. beyond weird to me to
17:16
think about the possibility of a
17:18
lightning team without Stamkos and. Feel.
17:22
It. As shows how much
17:24
he cares. You know he goes down.
17:26
makes that that's road oxy. That's. A
17:28
load our yard sales and road Augie.
17:32
Iron own. The guys got a big heart
17:34
I mean we already knew that and we
17:36
were reminder that in game three. That.
17:39
Was a hard shot from flood tourists and
17:41
Co vs and I'll or when he ate
17:43
that and when he when he finally did
17:45
get up did you not think he was
17:47
going to the bench? He went in the
17:49
offensive zone I know. I
17:52
know it was. It was incredible.
17:54
easily. I feel that one tomorrow
17:56
Man, males and I the I'm
17:58
sure you've played. The guys before.
18:02
And. I know there's a lot of
18:04
players out there, men and women who kind
18:06
of think this way that if. A
18:09
non goalie goes down to blockers shot
18:11
especially with empty net. You're.
18:13
Supposed to drive it right through them. Or.
18:16
Yeah, he'd even even more am
18:18
I am people do this effort
18:20
is ridiculous and Beer League for
18:22
people to do that. It's a
18:24
joke vice, You know that? There.
18:27
Are players and I don't know of terrorists ankles
18:29
thinking this or not but I would understand if
18:31
he was. They. Think you're going
18:33
to try to block this. You're
18:36
going to regret it. Said a
18:38
bull have a shot to be as my eyes
18:40
I think you'll find that you look at the
18:42
way he was moving in changing his play the
18:44
he's trying to score see as try and he's
18:46
trying i sat game I'll the he's like oh
18:48
free shouted stamkos here. For
18:51
the Panthers, killed off for Tampa Bay
18:53
Powerplays. I was a huge story here.
18:55
but the big story three nothing series
18:57
lead for the Cats. Steven
19:00
Stamkos me only have one remaining games
19:02
that I don't see it on my
19:04
side to finance as even like know
19:06
i classy tampa going. Down for straight, especially
19:08
at home. But I glass I am. I
19:10
a lot on my predictions this year could
19:12
turn out to be very wrong. I just
19:14
I don't see it. I just don't see
19:16
as if I would have told you Florida
19:18
was gonna go up three Nothing would you
19:20
have said? I wouldn't believe that either. Like
19:23
a Cylon are, my predictions this year are
19:25
atrocious. Okay Carolina Hurricanes
19:27
three the New York Islanders to
19:29
and the star of the show
19:31
was Freddie and since early of
19:33
completely rob know a Dobson and
19:35
you think wow he can do
19:38
better than that and then the
19:40
third Alexander Romanov gets robbed by
19:42
Fred he Anderson as well and
19:44
in between Anderson awesome the Hurricanes
19:46
chasing Ilya Sorokin three goals and
19:48
thirteen shots income Semyon Varlamov again
19:51
doesn't matter Three to was the
19:53
final score and now the Islanders
19:55
with. Their backs against the wall for
19:57
each. I would say the most shocking thing
19:59
for me about this game was Sorokin. There's.
20:03
A really good goaltender their a
20:05
potentially gray gotten her? They're totally.
20:08
But. This is now a summer project for
20:10
the Islanders. This. Is
20:12
now a player that.
20:15
And. He's gotta one of
20:17
the best teachers of all time. You
20:19
couldn't get a better teacher than batch
20:21
of was but this is now a
20:23
goaltender who you have to say Ilya.
20:26
Ah, This is Varlamov Net
20:28
for as long as we're gonna go
20:31
here and you're going to work on
20:33
your game in practice. And.
20:35
That's all you can do or even
20:37
before practice he bought their with no
20:40
box and and work on your net
20:42
to those goals the second goal in
20:44
particular the third goal. Were
20:46
rough. You can have
20:48
any issue with while pulling him. When
20:51
they did, By. It's been
20:53
shocking to me. And. The
20:55
O two months ago when I said I
20:57
thought the others were gonna make the plows
21:00
Glad they're bet the best goaltending of all
21:02
the teams on that bubble I didn't think
21:04
that was one predicted that worked out. Without
21:06
even intending it to work out because
21:08
I was talking about not i'm sorry
21:11
what him and not Varlamov fights over
21:13
lamb of came in he settled them
21:15
down the a chance to win. Or.
21:17
Least high and as you said
21:20
or Anderson who's been fantastic in
21:22
these players are shut them down.
21:24
I'm a less surprised of a
21:26
three nothing lead in this series
21:29
that I am in the Tampa
21:31
Florida Series, but again I still
21:33
don't see the Islanders going down
21:35
without a fight. And.
21:38
But this one is been more
21:40
predictable. Carolina is just a little
21:43
bit better even without to a
21:45
key players Now Tashi and Fost.
21:48
Ah, there's still. A little
21:50
bit better and this series has shown that.
21:53
could sign on for the anderson here
21:55
he was tremendous again three the eyes
21:57
he's he's he's been phenomenal i'm it
22:00
in the sense that I think
22:02
people were expecting to see Kachetkov
22:04
at some point. Just because
22:06
Anderson missed a lot of the year and
22:09
he's you know you're always very protective
22:11
of him but you
22:14
know I I think now you're going for
22:16
your sweep and then you can just give him the
22:18
time off if you have to. I
22:21
I don't see why you'd make that
22:23
switch now. We should also mention Fost.
22:25
Yeah. You know I watched
22:28
the Bally's interview in the pregame and
22:30
Trip Tracy is doing the
22:32
interview with with Brynden Moore and when Brynden
22:34
Moore says that Fost could
22:36
be out for the year you know you
22:38
could tell Trip was not expecting that answer.
22:40
The look on his face. He was stunned
22:42
and it because if you go back to
22:46
right before the playoffs Don
22:48
Waddell in his regular season ending
22:50
address you know he indicated that
22:53
they didn't think it was that bad
22:56
but obviously they found something
22:58
between then and now that
23:01
indicated he's he's going to
23:03
be out for the year. Pesci they're much
23:05
more optimistic. I don't
23:08
think his situation is anywhere near as
23:11
dire. It was I think it's kind
23:13
of like a frustrating injury in
23:15
the sense that it just takes a little bit
23:17
of time but
23:20
the Fost thing it really blew people
23:22
away. Not only Trip Tracy you heard
23:24
it live and was like are
23:26
you serious? Okay
23:29
we'll park the games here for a couple of moments
23:31
but I want to start with the
23:33
story of a player that everybody has wondered about
23:36
that you wrote about at sportsnet.ca and
23:39
sure made some enemies about at sportsnet.ca
23:41
in the process. William
23:43
Melander and the phantom injury keeping
23:45
him out of the lineup. Well
23:48
it's not a phantom injury it's a
23:50
it's it's a very real injury and
23:52
you know there were a
23:54
lot of people who are unhappy with me on Thursday
23:57
and you know what that's life in the
23:59
big city. You accept the consequences
24:01
of your actions. I knew there was a chance
24:03
that was going to be the case and I
24:05
accept any reactions that are negative.
24:10
I'll be honest. I don't like I don't
24:13
like talking about injuries around the
24:15
playoff because unlike people
24:17
who think that injuries don't get
24:19
targeted. I do think
24:21
injuries get targeted. I
24:24
think it's naive to assume anything different.
24:27
Although I'd like to think that concussions
24:29
are treated differently. This
24:34
one just got out of control. It just
24:37
got out of control and and
24:43
I just think that the amount of
24:46
scrutiny on this particular
24:48
situation squeezed
24:50
it out. And
24:53
you know the thing about Nylander is I
24:55
don't fortunately, I don't have
24:58
a migraine issue but
25:00
there were a lot of people that do. Like
25:03
I do think one thing that happened on
25:05
Thursday is after the story came out. It
25:09
definitely changed a lot of people's
25:11
perception on what was going on.
25:14
Whether or not the Maple Leafs intended for this
25:16
to happen, and I'm pretty sure they didn't, the
25:19
way it was handled turned
25:21
it into a much more clumsy
25:25
story than it needed
25:27
to be and I think now
25:31
that there's some clarity on what he's dealing
25:33
with I think
25:36
there's much more understanding of what the situation
25:38
is. Now, let me just say that I
25:41
still don't think as I wrote it
25:43
that the Maple Leafs were exactly sure
25:46
what the cause of it was but
25:49
everybody kind of knew what the outcome is and
25:51
that was he was dealing with migraines. So we'll
25:54
see if he's able to play on Saturday
25:56
for game number four. I know
25:58
there's a lot of hope he will be. But
26:00
like I said, it's been difficult for
26:02
them to get a handle on what
26:05
they're dealing with. But I
26:07
think at the very least, people
26:09
have a better understanding of this now.
26:11
And it's I
26:14
just think there was a lot of skepticism and it
26:16
was undeserved whether people
26:18
thought he was suspended or
26:21
people thought he was more interested in
26:23
going for 100 points than playing
26:25
in the playoffs, which to me is quite
26:28
frankly ridiculous. I
26:31
just think there's a better understanding of what he's dealing with
26:33
now. Okay, so
26:36
we'll stand by and we'll get to the Boston Toronto
26:38
series here coming up in a couple of moments. Elsewhere
26:41
around the NHL. David
26:43
Quinn fired as head coach of the San
26:45
Jose Sharks. My career general
26:47
manager firing him two days ago. Your
26:50
thoughts on this one? So far, the
26:53
assistants, Elliot still remain. So Ryan
26:55
Wierzowski, Brian Wiseman, Scott Gordon still
26:58
remain with the team. This
27:00
is look,
27:03
look, Jeff, I think everybody has
27:05
kind of a unanimous reaction to
27:08
this. And
27:10
that is that what
27:13
did you expected anyone to do
27:16
better? Yeah. And
27:18
I think Mike Greer acknowledge
27:21
that. I think
27:23
the biggest surprise about
27:26
this situation was
27:28
that when Mike Greer
27:30
came out last Saturday and
27:32
said, you know, hey, we're
27:35
still evaluating the coaching staff and
27:37
indicated that they might not be
27:39
back. I think it caught
27:41
people in that staff by
27:43
surprise. I haven't spoken
27:45
to anyone there yet. I tend
27:48
to try to give people like a little bit
27:50
of room before reaching out and wishing
27:52
the best or asking for comment
27:54
or anything like that. But
27:56
I have heard that that was a thing.
28:00
kind of caught them a bit by surprise, but
28:02
I have heard it caught them a bit by surprise.
28:06
I'm still trying to figure out
28:08
where this is going. One thing
28:10
I absolutely believe, Jeff, is that
28:13
this year, the
28:15
San Jose Sharks went
28:17
from we're in a
28:19
retool to we're in a rebuild. I
28:23
kind of wondered if that resetting
28:25
the clock put
28:29
Quinn in a bad spot. And
28:32
that's one of the things I wonder here. They
28:34
were just like, no, we've got to start all
28:37
over again. I also
28:39
wondered if there's someone specific
28:41
they're talking about. I
28:44
know some people have wondered if they're
28:46
looking about someone young like David Carle.
28:50
Other people thought that maybe they'd
28:52
go to a because of the
28:54
way they didn't defend well this year,
28:56
which also is very much down to
28:58
personnel. They could be
29:00
talking about like a Todd McClellan
29:02
reunion, someone who teaches a strict
29:04
131 that
29:07
maybe teaches them how to play. I
29:09
had some other people who said to me,
29:11
Jeff, they wondered if Ryan Worsofsky, who you
29:13
mentioned a couple of minutes ago and
29:16
was a hot young coaching prospect a
29:18
couple of years ago, could
29:20
be in line for this. So
29:23
I'll admit, I'm still wrapping my head
29:25
around it and trying to figure out
29:27
where the sharks are going here. But
29:30
there's no question that people
29:32
were surprised because A, Quinn
29:35
didn't seem to indicate that they were thinking
29:37
that way. And B,
29:40
people looked at it and said, Scotty
29:43
Bowman wasn't winning this year. So we'll
29:45
see. One
29:47
of the things I also wonder here, and this is
29:49
just my own feeling is, I
29:52
wonder if they're waiting to find out do
29:56
we win the lottery, see
29:58
if we get Macklin-Celabrian. pick
30:01
our coach then. Interesting. So
30:04
the lottery is supposed to be I think
30:06
May 6th or 7th so
30:09
part of me wonders if if
30:12
this is gonna be let's
30:15
see if we get Celibrini and if the
30:17
answer is yes is there a
30:19
kind of coach we're gonna need to help
30:22
bring him to the NHL. You
30:24
know one thing really quietly like I know
30:26
a lot of people checked out on the
30:29
San Jose Sharks this year when it became
30:31
obvious that this was gonna be the the
30:33
Celibrini Bowl for them but if
30:35
you try to look for some types of
30:37
positives and you know I
30:40
mentioned the assistant coaches a second ago.
30:42
San Jose's power play technically
30:45
was 20 I think 21st in the
30:48
NHL and when you consider the
30:50
personnel that's remarkable but if
30:53
you look from February on
30:56
starting February 1st they
30:58
were at 25% which when you consider
31:01
that person about that's Brian Wiseman
31:04
he handles the power play here again
31:07
it hasn't got a lot of attention because
31:09
a lot of people kind of checked out
31:12
but even considering the personnel
31:14
and you know that sometimes they
31:16
had to run you know five forwards on their
31:18
power play because you know bluntly they didn't have
31:20
a defenseman to handle the power
31:22
play up high but
31:24
Wiseman did a really good job with that
31:27
power play if we're looking for some types
31:29
of positives here from the San Jose Sharks.
31:31
Well you're a positive guy. Oh
31:34
yeah you know me Sunshine Lollipops that's all me.
31:37
Elliott speaking of coaches Ottawa. Yeah
31:41
I have people just telling me to watch
31:43
Craig Barube there. Bruce
31:46
Gariak reported Dean Eveson had been
31:48
interviewed which makes perfect sense but
31:51
I've had a couple of teams
31:53
tell me they think
31:55
that Ottawa really likes
31:57
Barube and they believe They
32:00
believe I can't prove it.
32:02
Nobody's saying anything, but they
32:04
believe they've already interviewed him. So
32:08
We'll see where that goes You
32:10
know who I you know, I can see really liking Brube.
32:12
Who's that? Brady Kachok Well,
32:16
there's a lot of history there, right? Yes It's
32:20
the St. Louis Mafia Totally.
32:22
All right. Well, we'll see where that
32:24
decision heads. I also think David
32:27
Carl has had Maybe
32:29
two already. I Louis
32:32
I suspect one. Yeah, but I
32:34
think there's others. I think
32:36
well He said if you're gonna make it worth my while
32:38
you got to really make it worth my while If
32:41
you catch my drift because he's got a great spot
32:43
right now Okay
32:45
question for you Does
32:47
this sound like someone who's going
32:49
to stay where he is quote?
32:53
This past year gave us memories.
32:55
We'll never forget That
32:58
Patrick King signing off from the
33:00
Tret Red Wings thanking teammates
33:03
and coaches and fans
33:05
and then saying quote this
33:07
past year gave us memories will never
33:09
forget Yeah,
33:14
I Understand why everybody is
33:16
saying this especially when you
33:19
combine that with his exit interview with
33:21
the media in Detroit. I Had
33:24
people tell me do not Read
33:26
too much into this But
33:29
I understand why it's hard not to Look
33:34
I had one Red Wings fan they sent me
33:36
a DM I've been
33:38
reading my DMS a lot more this week Which
33:42
is not always a good thing because you know, some
33:44
of you are just you know, very nasty but
33:51
The one person said to me like are
33:53
you drunk talking about Steve Eisenman in
33:55
term? Dylan Larkin got eight
33:57
years. Well Dylan Larkin's your captain like
34:00
He'll give Raymond eight years. He'll give Sider eight
34:02
years if they have to. And
34:04
he goes, yeah, well, he gave Cobb,
34:07
I can't remember, four or five years,
34:09
Cobb for five years gave
34:14
Sherrod four years. I said all of this
34:17
is true, but, you
34:19
know, Debrinket got four years in the prime of
34:22
his career. You could,
34:24
Iserman is careful with term. He just
34:26
is. And Patrick King said
34:29
it out loud term is important
34:31
to him. And we've talked about how
34:33
he wants this last 12 months
34:36
of a whirlwind to end.
34:39
He wants some stability. I
34:43
can see Iserman just being
34:45
very careful with that. And
34:49
again, I was just
34:51
told not to jump to
34:54
any conclusions yet. Now,
34:57
I recognize what
34:59
is true tomorrow might not be
35:01
true today. And all of
35:03
this can change. But again,
35:05
I was told don't jump to
35:08
conclusions yet. Well,
35:10
that's no fun. Like
35:14
I said, Jeff, it's hard not to. It's
35:16
based on the answer in the tweet. I
35:19
get it. The other thing too
35:21
is like King was good. He
35:23
was really good. Think of all the
35:25
big moments he had for the Red Wings this
35:28
year. I mean, a lot of this and
35:30
the night in Chicago was just brilliant. But
35:33
think of the moments down the stretch.
35:35
He was fantastic. Maybe this is the
35:37
world's greatest pressure tactic.
35:40
We are going to find out if the
35:43
mob can get to Steve
35:45
Iserman. I
35:48
mentioned Chicago a second ago, Alex Vlasic.
35:51
We've both gushed about him. Yeah, it's a really
35:53
good defense in six years, 27.6 million, 4.6 on
35:55
the AAV for the. 22
36:01
year old six foot six defender. Someone
36:04
said to me I didn't see the contract, the eight
36:06
and a half million in bonus money in the first
36:08
12 months. It's a good structure. It's
36:12
always hard to figure out what the
36:14
sweet spot is for defenders. You know,
36:16
he had 16 points this year in 79 games. Yeah.
36:20
So he's got, he doesn't, yeah, he doesn't get the
36:22
counting stats. Like, but I mean, that's irrelevant to me.
36:24
He's still a good player, but those
36:27
contracts are always harder to figure out
36:29
because without the numbers, it's hard to
36:31
make comparables. I look at it this
36:33
way. I think it's a great deal
36:35
for Chicago because it's not a ridiculous
36:37
number, but it's a great deal for
36:39
Vlasic because did you see that tweet
36:41
that went around with his email? I'm
36:43
sorry. I won't be able to
36:46
finish my team
36:48
project at BU because I'm going pro
36:50
and they're like, oh, good luck with
36:52
that. Good luck with your hockey career.
36:54
It was fantastic. You
36:56
know, I bet like a couple of years ago, he's not sure
36:59
if he's going to be signing for $27 million. So
37:01
it's a, it's a win, win, win. And
37:05
he's a good player and I'm happy for Chicago and
37:07
I'm happy for the player. A couple
37:09
more things quick here. I don't know how much of
37:11
a peak you had at the, at
37:13
the Delta Center in Salt Lake City
37:15
in Utah, the NHL hockey in Utah
37:17
event where Liam O'Brien
37:20
became a cult hero to the surprise of no
37:22
one. I liked a lot of
37:24
stuff about this. I thought it was really well done.
37:28
You know, I feel that, you know,
37:30
just think about a week ago, how
37:32
upset some of these Arizona players were
37:35
and how uncertain that some of these
37:37
Arizona players were. And
37:39
you know, we had Ryan Smith on the
37:41
pod and he talked about meeting them and
37:43
taking them for golf. And
37:46
then they went to Utah this week, like
37:48
just a different feeling in that team in
37:50
a week. Like if you, Jeff,
37:52
it's been a week since this happened. And
37:55
how much of a different feeling is
37:57
there around the league? I
38:00
knew we were really going somewhere when Betman
38:03
was making jokes at the Utah Media
38:05
Conference about how much nicer it is
38:08
to have a solid arena situation, right?
38:11
He has hit an early home run. One
38:14
of the things I've tried to do here is the
38:17
players, sort of the agents met
38:19
in Toronto this week on Tuesday
38:21
and I asked them, are
38:23
you guys aware of any situations where any
38:25
of these Arizona players are
38:28
still unhappy? And they said
38:30
no. And I checked
38:32
again after the trip to Utah on
38:34
Wednesday and they
38:36
said, and people told me no. And
38:40
you know, there obviously could be someone.
38:42
I don't speak to everyone and you're at
38:44
the mercy of the information you get,
38:47
but it seems as if he's answered all
38:49
the questions. I love the event.
38:51
I thought it was really cool. I
38:53
thought the fans of Utah came across
38:55
extremely well. I thought
38:57
each player individually introducing themselves,
38:59
including Liam O'Brien, Spicy Tuna
39:01
was a very nice touch.
39:05
You know, it reminded me of a college
39:07
pep rally. Oh, we're playing our
39:09
homecoming game tomorrow, big game against State.
39:12
Like that scene in Revenge of the
39:14
Nerds before they were playing their
39:16
big game at the end of the movie. You
39:20
know, it was excellent. And
39:23
you know, at the end of the day, a lot
39:26
of this is supposed to be fun. And
39:28
that looked, that looked fun.
39:33
It did. And you go back
39:36
to Liam O'Brien as well. I thought
39:38
that was a great bit of business
39:40
for Liam O'Brien, who is an unrestricted
39:42
free agent come July
39:44
1st. And he
39:47
just became the early darling for
39:49
NHL Utah. Well,
39:52
Don Liam, he
39:55
could sell Bitcoin after this. He
39:57
should be a Bitcoin salesman. People would buy.
40:00
Bitcoin off of Liam. You know I don't know
40:02
if someone told him to do that or he
40:04
just said you know what I better Ingratiate
40:06
to my myself to a love them
40:09
this crowd quickly they love whatever it
40:11
was Liam. You're the smartest guy there
40:13
mission accomplished Yes Well
40:16
done that makes things Easier

41:18
we will start Elliot's with
41:21
Bruce Toronto born Willow
41:24
Dale raised now lives in
41:26
Henderson, Nevada I like
41:29
this guy. Yeah, I know I like them
41:31
already. I'm Toronto born I was Willow Dale
41:33
raised and I would like to live in
41:35
Henderson, Nevada And once a year at the
41:37
NHL players tour we get to hang out
41:39
in Henderson, Nevada, and there's a lovely lovely
41:41
place Okay, knowing how
41:43
much Jeff likes conspiracy theories and
41:46
controversy Here's a question for
41:48
you I know the original Stanley
41:50
Cup is in the bank vault at the
41:52
Hall of Fame actually the original cup itself
41:55
Is in the Hall of Fame. We're gonna get there
41:57
in a couple of second the original Bowl was retired.
42:00
making such. The. That is in
42:02
Lord Stanley's vault at the Great
42:04
Hall the Whole Saints. But it
42:06
appears there are Stanley Cups in
42:08
both the E S, P N
42:10
and T N T studios. Unfortunately,
42:12
I can't get sports their broadcasts
42:14
down here so I don't know
42:16
if there's one in your studios
42:18
as well. So just how many
42:20
Stanley Cups are there I say
42:22
I know of to one that
42:24
has mistakes in the spelling of
42:26
names and a copy were corrections
42:28
were made. First of all, I'm
42:30
out on breakfast. Television last week and
42:33
the cop was there and I was
42:35
disappointed to find out and happened some
42:37
time ago. So maybe I should pay
42:39
attention that the ring that has Jacques
42:41
Plots name spelled incorrectly five times is
42:43
now off the Stanley Cup and is
42:46
on the wall at the Great Hall.
42:48
so no longer can we point all
42:50
those Montreal can it be kids winds
42:52
were plots name is is spelled incorrectly
42:54
five times. There
42:57
are two and when I
42:59
I read this question, I'd.
43:01
Taxes. So pressure from the
43:04
Hockey Hall of Fame and
43:06
he said they were at
43:08
yes Pn to day which
43:11
would be Thursday and Tnt
43:13
the day before. Sports
43:16
that last week New York earlier
43:18
this week. I'm only one that
43:20
is on the road. The one
43:22
the you're seeing is on the
43:24
road. That's the one the players
43:26
when I'm pretty sure it is
43:28
right now. I believe in Nashville
43:30
going next to Chicago and then
43:32
Montreal next week. So when the
43:34
cup travels there's another cop on
43:36
display at the Hockey Hall of
43:38
Fame. Or but the ones you
43:40
see on the Sats. the Sports
43:42
That one Ah G N T
43:44
E S P. N that's
43:46
the one the players
43:49
when says with and
43:51
at times elliott. Dance
43:54
Battalion So barks case.
43:57
Take. a parts the system
44:00
was Screwdriver So
44:03
there's a there's a couple of them Here's
44:06
what that's a good question. That is a very
44:08
very good question Lincoln
44:12
from Miami, Manitoba Hi
44:15
everyone fairly recent listener to the podcast, but now
44:17
I can't get enough love the content you guys
44:19
put out keep up the great work Thank you
44:22
Lincoln. Thank you for joining. Oh, yes. Glad to
44:24
have you aboard The Lindy
44:26
rough hiring by the Sabres got me thinking
44:29
Okay, the new coach has a
44:31
new coach ever kept the previous
44:33
head coach on staff Presumably
44:36
as an assistant coach, maybe
44:38
they've worked really well together in the past
44:40
for some example Thank you
44:42
for your time and go Jets
44:44
go We
44:47
have an example of that in the NHL right now
44:50
We do we do But
44:53
it's kind of a technicality Oh
44:56
my god I was gonna say how did
44:58
I not realize that there was something like
45:00
this right now? I thought I
45:02
was like I'm the dumbest guy alive if there's
45:04
something here. I'm missing. Okay, what's the technicality? Derek
45:07
King was interim and then Luke Richardson got
45:10
the job and kept him on as an
45:12
assistant. Ah Okay, you
45:14
know what? That's pretty good. I
45:16
have to say Jeff. I wouldn't have thought of
45:18
that because Yeah, King
45:20
was interim and not the head guy I'm
45:22
like practically insulting Derek King this is unintentional
45:25
I don't want it to come out as
45:27
bad as it's sounding but I wouldn't
45:29
have guessed that one I really wouldn't have
45:32
so that one's right under our nose hiding in plain
45:34
sight Very good. The
45:36
the other couple and maybe you can you can
45:38
fill in the blanks here, too Wayne
45:42
Cashman with the Philadelphia Flyers. Okay,
45:44
I was the head coach for
45:46
one year This
45:49
would have been I think 96 97 I
45:53
think even by his own admission talked about
45:55
how he was overwhelmed by it. Yes I
45:57
remember this now now you're mentioning it demote
46:00
The to an assistant while I'll use the
46:02
months not immortal I go are punishing you.
46:04
I think he wanted to get demoted to
46:06
be out. His lover Roger Nelson came in
46:09
in Ninety Seven Ninety Eight. So they use
46:11
only the coach for one year. With the
46:13
flood of the head coach, you do some
46:15
good research. Sure, there's two more that I
46:18
saw. I'm sure they do more to more.
46:20
Do. More with every Lancer here I
46:22
am looking dumber and dumber know there's
46:24
the there's one that again technically is
46:26
true and not who had the same
46:29
time we're going to get their arm
46:31
but the other one and want to
46:33
get sued is Lauren Moloch in with
46:35
the Blackhawks you are a member was
46:37
to me was controversial to say the
46:39
least. Ah yes and god you know
46:41
got punched oh by George Mcphee in
46:43
order to face it's exhibitions him he
46:45
ah he was died motor when Bob
46:47
Pulford took over as the head coach
46:49
of the Chicago Blackhawks. I would have
46:52
been Ninety Ninety Nine Two thousand Now
46:54
the other one. The. Other one,
46:56
Elliott let me know if this qualifies.
46:59
For. When Larry Robinson stepped down as
47:01
head coach of the New Jersey Devils,
47:03
I. Do and then he took a
47:05
break any came back as an assistant.
47:08
Under. Lou Lamoriello. He wanted him
47:10
to come back to live. That caused
47:13
by, yeah, I did. that accounts. he
47:15
added five hour sailor the house if
47:17
that counts. And by my. Ten
47:21
minutes some research on this one
47:23
systems go or of got for.
47:26
I. Wouldn't have gotten any of these I'd never
47:28
only were know you would a gotten rhino
47:30
you love their Robinson's I know you would
47:32
Ago I wouldn't have remember when I wouldn't
47:34
have I remembered it. Ah,
47:36
I would have chided you into getting it
47:39
as such. I think you'd have to ruin
47:41
of heads one of the of ones where
47:43
you get it's ninety seven hands and then
47:45
you get it right. The I knew it
47:47
all on now I would their I know
47:50
if there are more I'm sure. Ah so
47:52
if you want to send it along please
47:54
were only too happy to add thirty two
47:56
thoughts. It's for said.c A is the way
47:58
to get in by. They also send
48:01
us some other corrections or I'm
48:03
more of these examples as put
48:05
forward by Lincoln in Miami, Manitoba,
48:07
Lincoln. Thanks for that one. Now
48:09
here's a special something. That.
48:11
I think you're really gonna like
48:14
Elliott Shakes. Okay, this is from
48:16
Roman in. Salt.
48:18
Lake City. K.
48:21
The out it just Dom and Elliott.
48:23
I've been a Us based Leafs fan
48:25
for about five years. Falling.
48:27
In love with the sport
48:29
after of all things, the
48:32
Carolina Hurricanes beating beliefs on
48:34
that fateful day years ago
48:36
with their own zamboni driver?
48:38
You're kidding. This. Is Rome
48:40
and he saw a war. or Roman
48:42
I ever saw it. There's there's a
48:45
an oral history to be done here
48:47
about you becoming a hockey fan on
48:49
that day. But also becoming
48:51
a fan of the team at
48:53
a loss that to yes yes.
48:55
impressive silver legacy of David Ayer's
48:58
grows, David Ayer's growing the game
49:00
design of the assess in non
49:02
traditional markets and now so it's
49:04
that the idea Where to go?
49:06
David Ayer's I'm I've been basically
49:08
what we just learned is without
49:10
a zamboni driver. The as all
49:12
big City doesn't get the Coyotes,
49:14
their butterfly flaps, its wings in
49:16
China. That butterfly effect classic. It's
49:18
classic. I've been base in Utah.
49:20
For the past year and I'm very
49:22
excited to have an Nhl team a
49:25
mere forty minutes away from me. All
49:27
Roman? that's awesome. Congrats, Thanks for all
49:29
the Iceland information and intelligent dialogue. Well
49:31
at least just sex those boxes so
49:33
I like Roman. Ironic, my guy I'd
49:36
like a while back. it's help me
49:38
learn so much about the inner workings
49:40
and the history of the game. Now
49:42
here's the money part. I'm.
49:45
A barbershop quartet singer.
49:48
Me as good as is a

52:07
games coming up here with Pete backwards,
52:09
the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple
52:11
Leafs. we talked about how awesome Matthews
52:14
was. The story in Game Two Man
52:16
the story. Game Three was Brad Marchand
52:18
was what a command performance by Sixty
52:21
Three on Boston. The. I
52:23
I I had some buddies of mine
52:25
who are bigley fans who are pretty
52:27
pretty mad just gizzard. Leading up to
52:29
that. Game at the
52:31
right before park drop. We all have one
52:34
thing we all say Kevin Kelly a
52:36
ice as said marsh and said three A
52:38
says pretty really as an. Impose
52:40
his will on the series yet. and then he
52:43
went out. To do it. Ah,
52:45
I'm and. To:
52:47
There's been some interesting coaching commentary
52:49
in the series. First, your montgomery
52:51
upset that they're spreading too many
52:53
days in Toronto? Which.
52:55
Like to me as like. Someone's
52:58
like does that. Who. Which to
53:00
me was like wild. I mean it's
53:02
the playoffs. The. Old. A
53:05
web. Somewhere. Was a wound
53:07
which he like. I was like. Battle.
53:10
Were complaining about now. Okay, I'm
53:13
not wasting any time without was it's
53:15
and then. You can tell Now
53:17
I know the leave fans are mad
53:19
about the officiating in this game. Number.
53:22
One, they got more power plays. Number
53:24
two: they're gonna fix their own special
53:26
teams. The only
53:28
thing I thought was really egregious was
53:31
I thought in the last minute. That
53:34
Tavares. Family. I didn't
53:36
think was a great call. And Marcel
53:39
could have gotten apparently right before
53:41
the empty netter. And. It's
53:43
obvious would Chief is doing here. He's trying
53:45
to get some calls on Marsh and. He's
53:48
a great player. he impose his will
53:50
on the game your rights came to
53:53
was the Matthews game. And.
53:55
I think there was some reports
53:57
the I've food poisoning which I
53:59
believe is true. It's the night
54:01
the for game three game three
54:03
is was the martian game and
54:05
you're obviously deemed for on Saturday
54:07
night is a huge game. As
54:10
you know: Powerplay, Penalty Kill.
54:13
The. Goal is to be at
54:15
or hundred the best teams
54:18
are at a hundred. Toronto.
54:20
Is at fifty nine. Ah,
54:23
the only teams that are worse
54:26
are the Kings there at forty
54:28
three, but they're even in their
54:30
series and Dallas has close their
54:32
at sixty six and obviously they're
54:35
in trouble. Toronto has to get
54:37
a special teams together. The other
54:39
thing that Toronto's going to have
54:42
to deal with here. Is
54:45
seldom chief in game three
54:47
and obvious strategy and that
54:49
strategy was get much smarter
54:51
going. He played i'm
54:53
eight minutes in the first period which is more
54:55
than anyone else. And. I understand
54:57
what he was trying to do. He.
55:01
Was. Saying we have to get this
55:03
guy going. We. Can't win
55:06
the series. Without. This
55:08
guy. I
55:10
understand why you tried it. I.
55:13
Completely get it. By
55:15
what it does do is it throws
55:17
off your rhythm. Was. Some of
55:19
the other lines. And.
55:22
You. Could do that, I think in game three.
55:24
I. Don't think you can do that now and
55:26
deemed for. And.
55:29
Again, I. Know not
55:31
everyone liked it. And
55:33
I know not everybody was crazy about how
55:35
worked out. By. Understood it.
55:38
He can't do that again. You. Have to
55:40
go with your hot hands down. And by
55:43
the way Jeff the of your coaching the
55:45
Bruins. Yes, Who's.
55:47
Playing goes raymond, swam and. But.
55:50
Okay, the hallmark. of
55:52
little didn't say why but i've developed
55:55
a game one way and and way
55:57
mileage base as a good should be
55:59
so But it's gonna be all
56:01
mark Montgomery said one very interesting thing
56:04
though on on the off day Thursday
56:07
He was asked does the extra day off
56:09
there's two days off between games three and
56:11
four. Yeah, you can play so it influences
56:14
Well, this one wasn't a complaint.
56:16
He complained the other day. This was more
56:18
about Does it make
56:20
your decision? Easier to bring back
56:22
say swimming. I knew what the question was
56:24
about and he said yes It
56:27
could really do that but then he basically said
56:29
I don't know that that still means we're gonna
56:31
go back with swimming I
56:33
am with you. I would go back
56:35
with swimming, but I'm expecting a Walmart
56:39
Okay Los Angeles
56:41
and Edmonton if I told you the
56:43
Kings were going to win game two
56:45
you probably would have said yourself Hmm,
56:47
that's interesting. I wonder if the
56:49
score was 1-0 or maybe even 2 to 1 5
56:55
to 4 overtime
56:57
on J copitar I
57:00
didn't think the LA Kings could win a track
57:02
meet with Edmonton, but there it was. I there
57:05
it was Neither
57:08
did I I said a couple times. I'm not
57:10
sure they can win a 5-4 game someone tweeted
57:12
at me Oh really going into overtime is we're
57:14
about to find out if the Kings can win
57:16
a 5-4 game and the answer was yes Let
57:19
me just amend that too. I wouldn't recommend they
57:22
try to do that four times, but
57:25
Number one they went back with camp
57:27
a copitar and by field and
57:29
that made a huge difference Don't
57:33
break that line up again don't break
57:35
that line up again I
57:37
thought I thought Mikey Anderson was
57:39
a lot better in game two than he was
57:42
in game one I thought he had a really
57:44
rough game one, but you'll remember
57:46
like doubt. He's a constant. It's a given
57:48
He's gonna play well, but you'll
57:50
remember when LA has looked good against
57:55
The Oilers especially in the playoffs Anderson's
57:57
been a very big part of that and I thought
58:00
he was a lot better in game
58:02
two. Skinner struggled, that was
58:04
a big deal. Talbot battled, he
58:06
gave them one more save
58:09
than Edmonton's goalies and that's all you
58:11
can ask for from Talbot. You
58:13
know I still think there's a lot of people who
58:16
can arrive in this series. I hesitate
58:18
to say this because it
58:20
sounds ridiculous. I thought game
58:22
two, Conor McDavid was
58:24
really quiet, really quiet.
58:27
So you know what that means Jeff? He's
58:29
not going to be quiet on Friday night. That
58:31
was a game the elders will regret. Whoever
58:34
was losing that game, game two was going
58:36
to regret it and in this case
58:38
it was Edmonton. Don't
58:41
look now but Vegas, even though it's only
58:43
2-0, it feels like
58:45
they have Dallas' back up
58:47
against the wall going back
58:49
to T-Mobile Arena. Mark Stone
58:51
continues to be a story.
58:53
It looks like him and
58:55
Hurdle have played together forever.
58:57
This is
59:00
a team. Just when we thought we
59:02
were comfortable saying you can't just turn
59:04
it on and off, you
59:06
need time to gel, the
59:09
Vegas Golden Knights have flipped the switch, Elliot. They
59:11
sure have. My worst
59:13
prediction this year could turn
59:16
out to be the Stars if they go out in the
59:18
first round and I know I'm going to hear
59:20
it. Look, I thought there
59:22
was a chance Vegas could win this series.
59:24
I did not see it unfolding like this.
59:27
There's no way I would have predicted
59:29
this and nobody
59:31
out there would have predicted
59:33
this unless you are paid by the Golden
59:36
Knights and I'm not even sure
59:38
they really predicted it. The
59:40
one thing here, Jeff, is that defense
59:43
is your constant. It's your
59:45
effort and Vegas does
59:48
not cheat on defense. That
59:52
is a team that is locked down, understands
59:54
how it has to play in the postseason
59:56
and they are committed to it. They
59:59
did not. Give. The
1:00:01
stars a lot in game
1:00:03
number two. That. Was a
1:00:05
really mean nasty game. It.
1:00:07
Was big boy Aki I am perfectly
1:00:10
fine with that. But. The thing
1:00:12
that I see is the Golden Knights
1:00:14
are committed and they are dialed in
1:00:16
defensively. And they are
1:00:19
confident. Confidence. Comes
1:00:21
with believe in yourself. When it comes
1:00:23
with results, they had the believe in
1:00:25
themselves. They're getting results. They're.
1:00:27
Sending a message to the league, See.
1:00:30
Health Dallas to twenty one shots of the
1:00:33
Up. Like Logan Thompson's played
1:00:35
well. Me to see the head making game
1:00:37
too. but. He only had. To.
1:00:40
Face Twenty One Shots. You know I I
1:00:42
like to talk a lot about sounds Big
1:00:44
mess, a resounding Hockey's cross bar by And
1:00:46
Rosberg. Love that. I'll always love that sound.
1:00:49
I'll take it all day long. I
1:00:52
also like hearing hard passes
1:00:54
on blades and when your.
1:00:58
A. Team playing at home
1:01:00
soon and you can hear.
1:01:02
The. Sound of Hard Passes Hidden
1:01:05
Blades What does that tell
1:01:07
you? The. Road
1:01:10
team has taken the crowd
1:01:12
of as game the alley.
1:01:14
It. Sack. He
1:01:17
was so quiet vs. I.
1:01:20
Was stein like it was a i'm listen
1:01:22
I'm used to go on a Maple Leafs
1:01:24
games. It was so
1:01:26
gore you wire in their success. It
1:01:29
was so quiet in there for each
1:01:31
egg Vegas to smother them. Took the
1:01:33
players out of the games of the
1:01:36
fans out of the game to get
1:01:38
everybody out of the game. It was
1:01:40
incredible Cbs masses. You could hear passes.
1:01:43
Even thing that would also concerned me
1:01:46
a little bit. for Dallas's remember last
1:01:48
year Jason Robards in was really struggling
1:01:50
as bout against Vegas. Now he's looked
1:01:52
really good at. And. He of
1:01:54
the only guy that looks. Really
1:01:56
good. The rest of their offense is
1:01:58
really struggling. I. And. They
1:02:01
didn't do it in our Maverick Bork
1:02:03
was named H L. Mvp. Yes, fine.
1:02:06
On. Thursday night. First. Of
1:02:08
all, congratulations Damn very. Very
1:02:11
impressive season. I
1:02:13
wonder? I wonder? Well
1:02:15
I want hundred. They got a
1:02:17
couple of walking wounded here. Yes,
1:02:19
marshment got hurt. A
1:02:22
fox or got hurt. they didn't update them.
1:02:24
Hand by huge all and you
1:02:26
can't wait! Oh.
1:02:28
No, can't wait a few years of
1:02:31
your down to nothing. you're going in
1:02:33
the one of the toughest buildings in
1:02:35
the league. You can't wait if you're
1:02:37
doing it. I think you have to
1:02:39
do it now. Okay so a couple
1:02:41
games of we're going to see on
1:02:43
Friday Elliot's I'll serve the Washington Capitals
1:02:45
and the New York Rangers. Luck I'll
1:02:47
be as one of the big stories
1:02:50
that exactly a secret for the Washington
1:02:52
Capitals has been what's up with Alex
1:02:54
Ovechkin? I didn't think that the capital's
1:02:56
like when you broke down goaltending blue
1:02:58
line forwards. All of it and
1:03:00
Washington had much of a chance
1:03:02
in this series And it's gonna
1:03:04
be even harder if the not
1:03:06
going to get anything from Alexander
1:03:08
of Ask in game three Rangers
1:03:11
up to nothing Friday the venue
1:03:13
cysts. A look
1:03:15
at a seated there they've game plan for
1:03:17
him and there was a time that it
1:03:19
didn't even matter if you game plan fro
1:03:21
that Skyn. He would you
1:03:23
score? It's it's. different now.
1:03:26
That they do A Capitals are obviously
1:03:29
not a high flying capitals of five
1:03:31
ten fifteen years ago. So it's not
1:03:33
that it's easier to shut him down.
1:03:36
But if you are really good defensive
1:03:38
team and I think the Rangers are
1:03:40
really good defensive teams, there are one
1:03:43
three one team. After all they can
1:03:45
do it. They've done a great job
1:03:47
with it's I am really curious to
1:03:50
see this game. On
1:03:52
Game three because.
1:03:55
one thing that very rarely happens to
1:03:57
the capital's is they lose the physical
1:03:59
battle Panarin delivered the
1:04:01
big hit the other day. Yeah, again,
1:04:03
I submit was the right call the
1:04:05
way it was done But the
1:04:08
Capitals are going to be riled
1:04:10
up like a team with TJ
1:04:12
Oh she and Tom Wilson on it and
1:04:15
even Ovechkin who's a it was a beast
1:04:17
They do not get pushed around very often
1:04:20
and look they're losing They're
1:04:22
at home game three. Yeah, they're they
1:04:25
have their best chance to get themselves
1:04:27
back into the series They're
1:04:29
gonna be wired to play. I would expect
1:04:31
the game three That
1:04:34
Spencer Carver is gonna say hey guys, we
1:04:36
were supposed to be the physically
1:04:38
dominant team maybe we're not as
1:04:41
offensive as we used to be but
1:04:43
we're still we still don't get pushed around and
1:04:45
we don't get bullied and I Wonder
1:04:49
how the Capitals are gonna come out if
1:04:51
they're gonna try to come out and assert
1:04:53
some physical dominance here now That's not easy
1:04:56
when you're playing a team. That's got
1:04:58
Matt Rempe and Jacob Truba But
1:05:00
that doesn't mean you don't try and Barkley Goodrow.
1:05:03
It's a true embark Lee Goodrow. Yes Okay,
1:05:06
Winnipeg Jets in Colorado Avalanche the venue
1:05:08
shifts to Denver this series nodded at
1:05:10
ones after game one We had all
1:05:12
kinds of questions about your year of
1:05:15
after game two. We have all kinds
1:05:17
of questions about Connor Hellebuch What
1:05:20
are your questions going into this one for game
1:05:22
three for each? I think the
1:05:24
the main questions we have Jeff is after
1:05:27
game one we kind of expected that
1:05:29
the goaltender under the most heat would
1:05:31
be your give and You
1:05:35
would have thought going in if there was a
1:05:37
goaltender in this series who was under
1:05:40
some heat he would be the guy well
1:05:42
now after game two your give recovers
1:05:45
with an excellent performance and The
1:05:48
guy who's under heat is the Vesna trophy
1:05:50
winner and I don't
1:05:52
think anybody was expecting
1:05:54
that I
1:05:56
really thought that I
1:06:01
really thought that Colorado
1:06:05
in this series has
1:06:08
done whatever it's kind of
1:06:10
wanted to do in the offensive zone. Whether
1:06:13
it was the way they enter, whether
1:06:16
the way they you know
1:06:18
move the puck around or cycle, I think
1:06:22
they've had their own way out
1:06:24
there. And one,
1:06:27
Hallibach has to make more saves but
1:06:30
two, his team has got to
1:06:33
be a lot better whether it's in the
1:06:35
neutral zone or the defensive zone because
1:06:37
those Colorado guys are doing whatever they want.
1:06:40
That to me is the big focus. Can
1:06:43
Winnipeg slow down
1:06:45
that fast-moving powerful machine?
1:06:49
And finally we'll finish up with the
1:06:51
Vancouver Canucks and the Nashville Predators. Now
1:06:54
the great money quote from Andrew
1:06:56
Burnett after game two was commit
1:06:59
to the pain and
1:07:01
we saw that in game two. I commit to
1:07:03
the pain every time I could do this podcast.
1:07:06
Every time I get out of bed as I get older I
1:07:08
commit to the pain to try to get through a day. Andrew
1:07:12
Burnett we committed
1:07:14
to the pain. Now I have
1:07:16
been led to believe that
1:07:19
Nashville has a commit to the
1:07:21
pain t-shirt in the
1:07:23
works. So if that is true,
1:07:25
sign me up for a dozen
1:07:27
of them because I love that.
1:07:29
Now as we mentioned last podcast,
1:07:32
that's a great way and albeit a
1:07:34
painful way to win a game blocking
1:07:36
as many shots as Nashville did. I'm
1:07:38
not sure if you can do that
1:07:40
three more times to win this series
1:07:42
but we're gonna find out starting
1:07:45
tonight game three Nashville and
1:07:47
Vancouver. So there was a
1:07:49
report on Thursday night that
1:07:51
Thatcher Demko was
1:07:53
out for the year which caught me
1:07:56
by surprise because I had heard earlier
1:07:59
on Thursday there was some optimism
1:08:01
about Demko's situation. I think Rick
1:08:03
Dallowell reported the same. I
1:08:06
mean at this time of year crazy stuff flies
1:08:08
around we'll have to see but initially
1:08:11
I was told with Demko don't guess. Just
1:08:13
don't guess and again I heard on Thursday there
1:08:15
was potentially some optimism
1:08:18
and the other thing was he traveled with
1:08:21
the team as Dan Murphy reported and
1:08:23
the thing about that is you
1:08:25
don't travel with the team if
1:08:29
you're gonna be out a long time because
1:08:31
then your distraction or
1:08:34
you need either you've had a procedure
1:08:36
done which we're not expecting or
1:08:38
you're so badly bedridden or whatever that you
1:08:40
just can't go. To be
1:08:42
able to go with the team that's actually
1:08:45
a significant and good thing.
1:08:47
So we'll see how this
1:08:49
all plays out but I'll just say that one
1:08:51
caught me by surprise because like
1:08:54
I said I'd heard that there was actually
1:08:57
some positivity there. But
1:09:01
look I mean as you
1:09:03
said Nashville played a desperate
1:09:05
desperate desperate game too. Vancouver
1:09:08
has to match that and
1:09:10
Pederson has to produce. You
1:09:13
know my there
1:09:15
were some people who didn't like the way
1:09:18
I kind of defended Pederson in the last
1:09:20
pod. I don't think it's so much of
1:09:22
as a defense as I don't
1:09:25
I just don't like the fact that people
1:09:27
say he doesn't care. He cares but
1:09:29
he has to produce you know and
1:09:33
the thing that I would be hammering
1:09:35
if I was Rick
1:09:37
Tockett is you have to
1:09:39
be more aggressive. This is not the
1:09:42
time of the year to be unselfish
1:09:44
to a fault. You have to
1:09:47
be aggressive. You have to be
1:09:49
more selfish. You have to say
1:09:51
I've got puck. There is net.
1:09:53
I am not being stopped going
1:09:56
to the net. There were some things that happened
1:09:58
in the last game. I just don't think
1:10:00
will happen again. I think a lot of
1:10:02
those guys were trying to do 10 to 15% more
1:10:05
than they needed to do because Demko
1:10:07
got hurt. You know, go
1:10:09
back to your identity, be who you are and
1:10:12
let the chips fall where they may.
1:10:14
I really think that's
1:10:17
one of the reasons that Vancouver
1:10:19
lost that last game. This will
1:10:21
be a crazy building. The
1:10:23
Predators fans will be fired up. It'll
1:10:25
be wild in there. Oh
1:10:28
yeah. Canucks stay off
1:10:30
Broadway and you know
1:10:32
we'll see where this goes. This is gonna
1:10:34
be a long series. Hopefully
1:10:37
so. This one's gonna be a lot of fun.
1:10:39
We've already had two great games. Alright,
1:10:41
enjoyed the action all weekend. Hope
1:10:43
you enjoyed the podcast. Take a
1:10:45
moment. Think about Bob
1:10:48
Cole. Maybe go back and listen to
1:10:50
some of the great calls. He
1:10:52
made the game better for all of us
1:10:54
and again this whole podcast dedicated
1:10:57
to the memory of the great Bob
1:10:59
Cole. We'll talk to you again in
1:11:01
a moment.
