John L. Hanson Jr is a radio producer and host. He is currently producer and host of the NPR show "In Black America."Hanson began working in radio as a teenager, as a music programmer and youth reporter for his school's radio station. He worked as a DJ in Lockhart while attending college. In 1974 he joined Austin's NPR station to produce the nightly program “Soul on FM,” which led to him being named “Best DJ in Texas” by Texas Monthly.At KUT, Hanson began working on improving and increasing reporting for the black community. He created a weekly, live phone-in program featuring experts in various fields and endeavors to address the public about their intended impact on the Austin community. He went on to become the producer of "In Black America." He has also served as KUT's interim General Manager on two occasions.Hanson was raised in Detroit. He attended Huston-Tillotson College.
