Chandra Bozelko is a writer whose work focuses on issues related to criminal justice reform, especially prison labor. Bozelko served more than six years in a maximum-security facility in Connecticut for nonviolent crimes that remain on appeal. While in prison, she became the first incarcerated person to have a regular byline in a publication outside of the facility. Her column, “Prison Diaries,” ran in The New Haven Independent.Bozelko's writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, USA Today, US News and World Report, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Lily, Forbes, Elle, Ms. Magazine, Quartz, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, and Wired. Her first book, a book of poetry called “Up the River: An Anthology,” was published in 2013, while she was still incarcerated.Bozelko has received two awards from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, three from the Connecticut Press Club in 2018, and two from the National Federation of Press Women.Bozelko also works for a nonprofit that trains volunteers to enter correctional facilities and tutor incarcerated students as they prepare for academic milestones like passing the GED or taking college classes.Bozelko received her B.A. in Philosophy from Princeton University.
