Holy hell, what a story. For all the love it gets, cyberpunk is a genre I've always felt doesn't have nearly enough content available. More traditional sci-fi has a fairly large audience, especially these days. By its definition, cyberpunk eschews such broad appeal to the point of taking pride in bucking convention. So, when I say that The Fourth Ambit may be one of the best works in the genre across all mediums, I mean it. It's that good. Good as Dawson is as Giles, you're here for the writing. This is a very, very smart story that's strong throughout, but it doesn't overstay its welcome. It's efficient, giving you enough time to grow connected to the characters and world. It takes the real world mechanics that underlie computing and networks and melds them perfectly with plausible pseudoscience. The story is thrilling from start to finish. Slowly, inexorably, you're lowered deeper and deeper through the levels of the Ambit right alongside Giles, and every minute of it feels glorious.
