RATING
There's only three episodes so far - but right now this is at the top of my "listen to it as it drops" list - I'm loving this story and the sound design / voice acting is top notch. Come on, Maxine - let's lie to your uncle and solve this thing!
An overall charming full cast young adult mystery with some friendship/romance. A precocious teen detective tries to solve the mystery of her missing friend with her neighbor's help and uncovers secrets of her small town. Includes some of the classic YA tropes - the outsider protagonist, an unrequited romance subplot, dead parents (there's a non-normative family structure in her being raised by her uncle), and adults patronizing the young protagonist. While the main VA sounds nothing like a 15 year old, she delivers the emotion behind the character well and it's fun to listen to her piece clues together and bounce off the deuteragonist.
solid YA mystery, a light & classic vibe~ a cpl queer characters too which is always a plus!
Maxine Miles is an experiment in audio drama - you choose the ending. Once you've listened to the first nine episodes, followed the saga, met the characters and studied the clues, you can decide which of the three outcomes is the best option. The ending which is more popular with fans will become the official finale and influence the direction season two takes. This approach could have been a mere gimmick and as the success of the show hinged on that format, there was little room for error. Fortunately creator Lauren Shippen's careful planning and intricate weaving of plots leads you naturally towards a feeling of confidence about making an educated decision when the time comes. There is a responsibility on the cast and crew to deliver a show that hooks you long enough to reach the interactive stage. The writing is sharp, with flowing dialogue which exudes personality across the characters. The script is delivered with confidence and heart by an excellent cast. The show is well directed and edited, with effective pacing allowing moments to play out as required.Although Maxine Miles is targetted at a young adult audience there is no reason older listeners cannot engage with the series. It is a joy to listen to from beginning to end and season two cannot come soon enough.
It has charm, heart and really smart. Can't wait for Season 2.
