Plainly put, this show rocks and I love it. It’s an urban fantasy about three individuals who are each saved in their hour of greatest need by three different Old Gods of Death to fight (and kill) God and his crusaders on Earth. And at least one of them has a time limit. Frickin’. AWESOME. The show starts off as one extended single-speaker narration from Elio, the sole survivor of an attack by crusaders on his village in Mexico, that is almost hypnotically gripping right from the start, but as we get into future episodes, we layer in our new protagonists--Shinji, from Japan, and Talia, from Haiti--and they begin to tell the story together, weaving in and out of a more classical narration to comment on scenes, jump in to reenact moments, or just stop to bicker with a truly lovely chemistry. These are all characters that are so clear, so lovable, so funny and strong and vulnerable in their own ways, and their interplay never ceases to be entertaining, no matter what situations they find themselves in. Plus, their respective powers (Elio can create a basically impenetrable shield, but it’s of HIS OWN BLOOD) are great and always come at a cost. Come for the adventure and the killing-God-of-it-all, stay for the found family/ragtag bunch of misfits and the vibes.
