RATING
Crimes of the Centuries: Produced by the Obsessed Network this podcast’s solo host Amber Hunt is an already well known and widely loved personality in the true crime world. Hunt, a reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer, is the creator and host of the Webby nominated podcast Accused which covers suspicious death cases. She brings the same enticing and unbiased energy to this new show as she leads you through some of the landmark crimes of society. These crimes have faded into the background as time continued and other headlines took their places but when they happened were earthshaking. This podcast isn’t necessarily for those listeners who must have resolution by the end of the episode. Due to the cases being as old as they are and many other factors there isn’t a high likelihood that they will be solved. This doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be covered and the podcast is perfect for those true crime addicts who want to be walking crime encyclopedias. Launching just this past October on the 26th, the episodic show is brand new and covers a different case every episode. It currently has four episodes out which on average are about 44 minutes long and a new episode comes out every week on Mondays. Owltail has 4: Nannie Doss: The Murderous Giggling Granny as the most popular episodes which happened to be my favorite so far as well. Script and sound quality are as flawless as can be. Music is subtle and suspenseful. Apple podcasts has 74 written reviews, and 419 ratings for an average of four and a half stars. Trigger warnings are different for every case but include murder, sexual assualt and other forms of violence. Top shelf true crime podcast. The host is well informed and cares about the details. She’s a journalist. It shows in her professionalism. As a narrator, she’s solid. She doesn’t OVER EMPHASIZE WORDS AT THE END OF EVERY SENTENCE like some more popular true crime hosts do.She also doesn’t waste the listener’s time by being indignant and disgusted about the crimes involved in the episodes because she knows we, too, are upset by these acts and the people who commit them. We don’t need a host (or, worse, a sidekick) standing on a table to remind us how virtuous we all are and how terrible these criminals are. (Yeah, we are humans with feelings and empathy, too. We get it. Move on.) This show strikes the right balance between procedural and focus on the victims without sacrificing tension or narrative drama. Best of all, the show is never salacious or exploitative. I never have to skip parts or feel dirty because I chose to sit through an audio reenactment that relishes the macabre or sad. Top-tier work.
Really interesting stories, some going back more than 100 years. Well written and presented. I enjoy this podcast.
