Season 1 was awesome old-radio style. Season 2 is Western goodness
An audiodrama beautifully produced and acted with a special gift for creating a rich soundscape and an original atmosphere.
Really creative and wonderfuly presented horror!
I really enjoyed the first few episodes but the series really lost me mid way through and only got worse in terms of writing. I really found the period piece cast to be darling, and I enjoyed hearing the creator interviews and bloopers. The sound design was fair-to-good, but without a good story it's simply not worth the listen, and no amount of time dedicated to having a character telling me (as a listener) how to feel about the story can fix that... And they dedicated way too much time to telling us how to feel about each section with their modern day protagonist, which is weak storytelling.I'm turned off from future seasons in that I also feel like the show is inclusive not for the sake of the narrative or the cast/creators, but for the sake of checking off boxes and marketing.
I've only listened to the first season. Lot of really great potential, but pretty uneven. The voice actors are generally excellent (Tommy, Penelope, Edith, and Mary were standouts and period accurate) but the psychiatrist character is not well done. Very slow and stilted way of speaking which is is very "I. Am. Acting" rather than a naturalistic performance. Sounds like they cast a young man to put on an old man voice. Just cast an old man or make the character younger. The voice actor is very funny and charming in the bloopers, I'm sure he would have done a great job if Weisman was allowed to be younger. Story is good, but a lot of over-explaining things using Max. Trust your audience to follow the story and the character motivations. Way too many historical anachronisms which could be solved with even a tiny bit of research into the 1910's. It feels like the writer didn't really have a good sense of the time they were writing for. This seems like a negative review, but these were really just niggles. There's so much good here, the podcast is a lot of fun, the writers clearly have some awesome ideas and are very creative, and I'm going to listen to the next season in the hopes that some of these things are resolved.
A great, slow build horror that seems off at first before it slaps you upside the head. It's very creative and diverse. Do recommend!
Do you like gory slasher horror in audio drama form? Please stick around to check out the other seasons- each of them are wildly different from each other!I think it's best to step into the shows blind so the mysteries can surprise you, but do be aware that this is probably the 2nd goriest slasher audio drama today.S1: spoopy cursed tapes, sound quality from present day narrator is good, but the old timey tapes are a little roughS2: country westerns in pursuit of a serial killer- my favorite torture scenes.S3: cyberpunk meets religion and bad stuff happens- my favorite season overall and the best music, sound design, voice acting, & story. I think their writing is way improved, but I'm also biased towards cyberpunk. S4: Bad stuff happens in Golden age of hollywood- got stuck on a hiatus so unfortunately the mystery hasn't been resolved yet.A thing I REALLY like about this show is that, unlike many shows today that are like 8-10 eps, each season is 20 eps and we get time to flesh out and get to know the characters and plot. Very little is rushed. Also because it is an anthology, if you don't like a season, you can skip it & go to the next because none of them are related.
Amazing podcast. Beautiful sound design. Stories are rich and diverse with queer stories.
